We introduce a natural Hopf algebra structure on the space of noncommutative symmetric functions which was recently studied as a vector space by Rosas and Sagan. The bases for this algebra are indexed by set partitions. We show that there exist a natural inclusion of the Hopf algebra of noncommutative symmetric functions indexed by compositions in this larger space. We also consider this algebra as a subspace of noncommutative polynomials and use it to understand the structure of the spaces of harmonics and coinvariants with respect to this collection of noncommutative polynomials.

This paper deals with combinatorial aspects of finite covers of groups by cosets or subgroups. Let $a_1G_1,...,a_kG_k$ be left cosets in a group $G$ such that ${a_iG_i}_{i=1}^k$ covers each element of $G$ at least $m$ times but none of its proper subsystems does. We show that if $G$ is cyclic, or $G$ is finite and $G_1,...,G_k$ are normal Hall subgroups of $G$, then $k\geq m+f([G:\bigcap_{i=1}^kG_i])$, where $f(\prod_{t=1}^r p_t^{α_t})=\sum_{t=1}^rα_t(p_t-1)$ if $p_1,...,p_r$ are distinct primes and $α_1,...,α_r$ are nonnegative integers. When all the $a_i$ are the identity element of $G$ and all the $G_i$ are subnormal in $G$, we prove that there is a composition series from $\bigcap_{i=1}^kG_i$ to $G$ whose factors are of prime orders. The paper also includes some other results and two challenging conjectures.
Umbral nature of the Poisson random variables
Extending the rigorous presentation of the classical umbral calculus given by Rota and Taylor in 1994, the so-called partition polynomials are interpreted with the aim to point out the umbral nature of the Poisson random variables. Among the new umbrae introduced, the main tool is the partition umbra that leads also to a simple expression of the functional composition of the exponential power series. Moreover a new short proof of the Lagrange inversion formula is given.
The smash product of symmetric functions. Extended abstract
We construct a new operation among representations of the symmetric group that interpolates between the classical internal and external products, which are defined in terms of tensor product and induction of representations. Following Malvenuto and Reutenauer, we pass from symmetric functions to non-commutative symmetric functions and from there to the algebra of permutations in order to relate the internal and external products to the composition and convolution of linear endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. The new product we construct corresponds to the smash product of endomorphisms of the tensor algebra. For symmetric functions, the smash product is given by a construction which combines induction and restriction of representations. For non-commutative symmetric functions, the structure constants of the smash product are given by an explicit combinatorial rule which extends a well-known result of Garsia, Remmel, Reutenauer, and Solomon for the descent algebra. We describe the dual operation among quasi-symmetric functions in terms of alphabets.
Studies in Cryptological Combinatorics
The key-agreement problem (finding a private key to use for secret messages, otherwise referred to as the public-key distribution problem), was introduced by Diffie and Hellman in 1976. An approach to structuring key-agreement protocols via the use of one-way associative functions was proposed in 1993 by Rabi and Sherman. We propose here a provably strong associative one-way function based upon knot composition (answering an open problem proposed by Rabi and Sherman whether any such associative one-way functions exist). We also introduce and solve a game, exploring its relation to problems in graph and braid theory and develop a new technique for computing whether a graph is n-colorable. En route we look at estimator and prediction problems raised in Classical Probability Theory using Urn problems.

Combining a selection of tools from modern algebraic geometry, representation theory, the classical invariant theory of binary forms, together with explicit calculations with hypergeometric series and Feynman diagrams, we obtain the following interrelated results. A Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity bound and a projective normality result for the locus of hypersufaces that are equally supported on two hyperplanes. The surjectivity of an equivariant map between two plethystic compositions of symmetric powers; a statement which is reminiscent of the Foulkes-Howe conjecture. The nonvanishing of even transvectants of exact powers of generic binary forms. The nonvanishing of a collection of symmetric functions defined by sums over magic squares and transportation matrices with nonnegative integer entries. An explicit set of generators, in degree three, for the ideal of the coincident root locus of binary forms with only two roots of equal multiplicity.

We study the random composition of a small family of O(n^3) simple permutations on {0,1}^n. Specifically we ask how many randomly selected simple permutations need be composed to yield a permutation that is close to k-wise independent. We improve on the results of Gowers 1996 and Hoory, Magen, Myers and Rackoff 2004, and show that up to a polylogarithmic factor, n^2*k^2 compositions of random permutations from this family suffice. In addition, our results give an explicit construction of a degree O(n^3) Cayley graph of the alternating group of 2^n objects with a spectral gap Omega(2^{-n}/n^2), which is a substantial improvement over previous constructions.
Hook-lengths and Pairs of Compositions

The monomial basis for polynomials in N variables is labeled by compositions. To each composition there is associated a hook-length product, which is a product of linear functions of a parameter. The zeroes of this product are related to "critical pairs" of compositions; a concept defined in this paper. This property can be described in an elementary geometric way; for example: consider the two compositions (2,7,8,2,0,0) and (5,1,2,5,3,3), then the respective ranks, permutations of the index set {1,2,...,6} sorting the compositions, are (3,2,1,4,5,6) and (1,6,5,2,3,4), and the two vectors of differences (between the compositions and the ranks, respectively) are (-3,6,6,-3,-3,-3) and (2,-4,-4,2,2,2), which are parallel, with ratio -3/2. For a given composition and zero of its hook-length product there is an algorithm for constructing another composition with the parallelism property and which is comparable to it in a certain partial order on compositions, derived from the dominance order. This paper presents the motivation from the theory of nonsymmetric Jack polynomials and the description of the algorithm, as well as the proof of its validity.

In this paper we determine a number of meaningful compositions of higher order of a set of functions, which is considered in Malesevic (1998), in implicit and explicit form. Results which are obtained are applied to the vector analysis in order to determine the number of meaningful differential operations of higher order.
On generating series of complementary planar trees
We generalize and reprove an identity of Parker and Loday. It states that certain pairs of generating series associated to pairs of labelled rooted planar trees are mutually inverse under composition.
Regenerative partition structures

We consider Kingman's partition structures which are regenerative with respect to a general operation of random deletion of some part. Prototypes of this class are the Ewens partition structures which Kingman characterised by regeneration after deletion of a part chosen by size-biased sampling. We associate each regenerative partition structure with a corresponding regenerative composition structure, which (as we showed in a previous paper) can be associated in turn with a regenerative random subset of the positive halfline, that is the closed range of a subordinator. A general regenerative partition structure is thus represented in terms of the Laplace exponent of an associated subordinator. We also analyse deletion properties characteristic of the two-parameter family of partition structures.
Analytic urns

This article describes a purely analytic approach to urn models of the generalized or extended Pólya-Eggenberger type, in the case of two types of balls and constant ``balance,'' that is, constant row sum. The treatment starts from a quasilinear first-order partial differential equation associated with a combinatorial renormalization of the model and bases itself on elementary conformal mapping arguments coupled with singularity analysis techniques. Probabilistic consequences in the case of ``subtractive'' urns are new representations for the probability distribution of the urn's composition at any time n, structural information on the shape of moments of all orders, estimates of the speed of convergence to the Gaussian limit and an explicit determination of the associated large deviation function. In the general case, analytic solutions involve Abelian integrals over the Fermat curve x^h+y^h=1. Several urn models, including a classical one associated with balanced trees (2-3 trees and fringe-balanced search trees) and related to a previous study of Panholzer and Prodinger, as well as all urns of balance 1 or 2 and a sporadic urn of balance 3, are shown to admit of explicit representations in terms of Weierstraßelliptic functions: these elliptic models appear precisely to correspond to regular tessellations of the Euclidean plane.
New results on the peak algebra

The peak algebra is a unital subalgebra of the symmetric group algebra, linearly spanned by sums of permutations with a common set of peaks. By exploiting the combinatorics of sparse subsets of [n-1] (and of certain classes of compositions of n called almost-odd and thin), we construct three new linear bases of this algebra. We discuss two peak analogs of the first Eulerian idempotent and construct a basis of semi-idempotent elements.
We use these bases to describe the Jacobson radical of the peak algebra and to characterize the elements of this algebra in terms of the canonical action of the symmetric groups on the tensor algebra of a vector space. We define a chain of ideals such that the ideal at the bottom of the chain is the linear span of sums of permutations with a common set of interior peaks and the ideal at the top is the whole algebra. We extend the above results to these ideals, generalizing results of Schocker (the case of the bottom ideal).
Decomposable compositions, symmetric quasisymmetric functions and equality of ribbon Schur functions

We define an equivalence relation on integer compositions and show that two ribbon Schur functions are identical if and only if their defining compositions are equivalent in this sense. This equivalence is completely determined by means of a factorization for compositions: equivalent compositions have factorizations that differ only by reversing some of the terms. As an application, we can derive identities on certain Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Finally, we consider the cone of symmetric functions having a nonnnegative representation in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric basis. We show the Schur functions are among the extremes of this cone and conjecture its facets are in bijection with the equivalence classes of compositions.
Irreducible compositions and the first return to the origin of a random walk
Let $n = b_1 + ... + b_k = b_1' + \cdot + b_k'$ be a pair of compositions of $n$ into $k$ positive parts. We say this pair is {\em irreducible} if there is no positive $j < k$ for which $b_1 + ... b_j = b_1' + ... b_j'$. The probability that a random pair of compositions of $n$ is irreducible is shown to be asymptotic to $8/n$. This problem leads to a problem in probability theory. Two players move along a game board by rolling a die, and we ask when the two players will first coincide. A natural extension is to show that the probability of a first return to the origin at time $n$ for any mean-zero variance $V$ random walk is asymptotic to $\sqrt{V/(2 π)} n^{-3/2}$. We prove this via two methods, one analytic and one probabilistic.

We consider an integral series f(X,t) which depends on the choice of a set X of labelled planar rooted trees. We prove that its inverse for composition is of the form f(Z,t) for another set Z of trees, deduced from X. The proof is self-contained, though inspired by the Koszul duality theory of quadratic operads.
Measure convolution semigroups and non-infinitely divisible probability distributions

Let $μ$ be a probability measure (or corresponding random variable) such that all moments $μ_n$ exist. Knowledge of the moments is not sufficient to determine infinite divisibility of the measure; we show also that infinitely divisible, and in particular lognormal, distributions lose infinitely divisibilty when censored in certain ways even if all moments are arbitrarily close to those of the uncensored distribution. The moments of a composition of k copies of $μ$ are expressed as combinatorial compositions of the $μ_n$. We express the moments of the compositions in the context of occupancy problems, arranging n balls in k cells; the classical convolution is described by Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics and is multinomial. For certain non-infinitely divisible measures with moments increasing fast enough the indexing of a k-cell combinatorial composition is extended to indexing by non-negative real t and we construct classical convolution measure semigroups from amongst the t-indexed classes. We prove also that when a random variable with infinitely divisible distribution is embedded in a Lévy process $(Y_t)$ then the t-indexed Maxwell-Boltzmann is the law of $Y_t$. In order to get moment-based multinomial compositions indexed by a continuum we use random measures and random distributions rather than random variables. An alternative approach to embeddability of a non-infinitely divisible $μ$ is by considering non-classical convolution measure semigroups; for example embedding $μ$ in a Boolean convolution measure semigroup and retaining the multinomial character of the moments.embedding $μ$ in a Boolean convolution measure semigroup and retaining the multinomial character of the moments. Embedding $μ$ in an Urbanik convolution measure semigroup loses their multinomial character .
Updown Categories
A poset can be regarded as a category in which there is at most one morphism between objects, and such that at most one of Hom(c,c') and Hom(c',c) is nonempty for c not equal to c'. If we keep in place the latter axiom but allow for more than one morphism between objects, we can have a sort of generalized poset in which there are multiplicities attached to the covering relations, and possibly nontrivial automorphism groups. We call such a category an "updown category." In this paper we give a precise definition of such categories and develop a theory for them, which incorporates earlier notions of differential posets and weighted-relation posets. We also give a detailed account of ten examples, including the updown categories of integer partitions, integer compositions, planar rooted trees, and rooted trees.
A Littlewood-Richardson rule for evaluation representations of quantum affine sl(n)
We give a combinatorial description of the composition factors of the induction product of two evaluation modules of the affine Iwahori-Hecke algebra of type GL(m). Using quantum affine Schur-Weyl duality, this yields a combinatorial description of the composition factors of the tensor product of two evaluation modules of the quantum affine algebra of type sl(n).

We consider the transformation properties of integer sequences arising from the normal ordering of exponentiated boson ([a,a*]=1) monomials of the form exp(x (a*)^r a), r=1,2,..., under the composition of their exponential generating functions (egf). They turn out to be of Sheffer-type. We demonstrate that two key properties of these sequences remain preserved under substitutional composition: (a)the property of being the solution of the Stieltjes moment problem; and (b) the representation of these sequences through infinite series (Dobinski-type relations). We present a number of examples of such composition satisfying properties (a) and (b). We obtain new Dobinski-type formulas and solve the associated moment problem for several hierarchically defined combinatorial families of sequences.
