On resistance matrices of weighted balanced digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected graph with $V(G)=\{1,\dotsc,n\}$. Then the resistance distance between any two vertices $i$ and $j$ is given by $r_{ij}:=l_{ii}^† + l_{jj}^†-2 l_{ij}^†$, where $l_{ij}^†$ is the $(i,j)^{\rm th}$ entry of the Moore-Penrose inverse of the Laplacian matrix of $G$. For the resistance matrix $R:=[r_{ij}]$, there is an elegant formula to compute the inverse of $R$. This says that \[R^{-1}=-\frac{1}{2}L + \frac{1}{τ' R τ} ττ', \] where \[τ:=(τ_1,\dotsc,τ_n)'~~\mbox{and}~~ τ_{i}:=2- \sum_{\{j \in V(G):(i,j) \in E(G)\}} r_{ij}~~~i=1,\dotsc,n. \] A far reaching generalization of this result that gives an inverse formula for a generalized resistance matrix of a strongly connected and matrix weighted balanced directed graph is obtained in this paper. When the weights are scalars, it is shown that the generalized resistance is a non-negative real number. We also obtain a perturbation result involving resistance matrices of connected graphs and Laplacians of digraphs.

On the clique behavior of graphs of low degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
To any simple graph $G$, the clique graph operator $K$ associates the graph $K(G)$ which is the intersection graph of the maximal complete subgraphs of $G$. The iterated clique graphs are defined by $K^{0}(G)=G$ and $K^{n}(G)=K(K^{n-1}(G))$ for $n\geq 1$. If there are $m<n$ such that $K^{m}(G)$ is isomorphic to $K^{n}(G)$ we say that $G$ is convergent, otherwise, $G$ is divergent. The first example of a divergent graph was shown by Neumann-Lara in the 1970s, and is the graph of the octahedron. In this paper, we prove that among the connected graphs with maximum degree 4, the octahedron is the only one that is divergent.

Spectral radius and $[a,b]$-factors in graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An $[a,b]$-factor of a graph $G$ is a spanning subgraph $H$ such that $a\leq d_{H}(v)\leq b$ for each $v\in V(G)$. In this paper, we provide spectral conditions for the existence of an odd $[1,b]$-factor in a connected graph with minimum degree $δ$ and the existence of an $[a,b]$-factor in a graph, respectively. Our results generalize and improve some previous results on perfect matchings of graphs. For $a=1$, we extend the result of O\cite{S.O} to obtain an odd $[1,b]$-factor and further improve the result of Liu, Liu and Feng\cite{W.L} for $a=b=1$. For $n\geq 3a+b-1$, we confirm the conjecture of Cho, Hyun, O and Park\cite{E.C}. We conclude some open problems in the end.

Game of Life on Graphs
We consider a specific graph dynamical system inspired by the famous Conway's Game of Life in this work. We study the properties of the dynamical system on different graphs and introduce a new efficient heuristic for graph isomorphism testing. We use the evolution of our system to extract features from a graph in a deterministic way and observe that the extracted features are unique and the distance induced by that features satisfy triangle inequality for all connected graphs with up to ten vertices.

Among other things, it is shown that for every pair of positive integers $r$, $d$, satisfying $1<r<d\leq 2r$, and every finite simple graph $H,$ there is a connected graph $G$ with diameter $d$, radius $r$, and center $H.$
On the existence of graphs which can colour every regular graph

Let $H$ and $G$ be graphs. An $H$-colouring of $G$ is a proper edge-colouring $f:E(G)\rightarrow E(H)$ such that for any vertex $u\in V(G)$ there exists a vertex $v\in V(H)$ with $f\left (\partial_Gu\right )=\partial_Hv$, where $\partial_Gu$ and $\partial_Hv$ respectively denote the sets of edges in $G$ and $H$ incident to the vertices $u$ and $v$. If $G$ admits an $H$-colouring we say that $H$ colours $G$. The question whether there exists a graph $H$ that colours every bridgeless cubic graph is addressed directly by the Petersen Colouring Conjecture, which states that the Petersen graph colours every bridgeless cubic graph. In 2012, Mkrtchyan showed that if this conjecture is true, the Petersen graph is the unique connected bridgeless cubic graph $H$ which can colour all bridgeless cubic graphs. In this paper we extend this and show that if we were to remove all degree conditions on $H$, every bridgeless cubic graph $G$ can be coloured substantially only by a unique other graph: the subcubic multigraph $S_{4}$ on four vertices. A few similar results are provided also under weaker assumptions on the graph $G$. In the second part of the paper, we also consider $H$-colourings of regular graphs having degree strictly greater than $3$ and show that: (i) for any $r>3$, there does not exist a connected graph $H$ (possibly containing parallel edges) that colours every $r$-regular multigraph, and (ii) for every $r>1$, there does not exist a connected graph $H$ (possibly containing parallel edges) that colours every $2r$-regular simple graph.

Small cocircuits in minimally vertically $4$-connected matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Halin proved that every minimally $k$-connected graph has a vertex of degree $k$. More generally, does every minimally vertically $k$-connected matroid have a $k$-element cocircuit? Results of Murty and Wong give an affirmative answer when $k \le 3$. We show that every minimally vertically $4$-connected matroid with at least six elements has a $4$-element cocircuit, or a $5$-element cocircuit that contains a triangle, with the exception of a specific non-binary $9$-element matroid. Consequently, every minimally vertically $4$-connected binary matroid with at least six elements has a $4$-element cocircuit.
Multiset and Mixed Metric Dimension for Starphene and Zigzag-Edge Coronoid

Let $Γ=(V,E)$ be a simple connected graph. A vertex $a$ is said to recognize (resolve) two different elements $b_{1}$ and $b_{2}$ from $V(Γ)\cup E(Γ)$ if $d(a, b_{1})\neq d(a, b_{2}\}$. A subset of distinct ordered vertices $U_{M}\subseteq V(Γ)$ is said to be a mixed metric generator for $Γ$ if each pair of distinct elements from $V\cup E$ are recognized by some element of $U_{M}$. The mixed metric generator with a minimum number of elements is called a mixed metric basis of $Γ$. Then, the cardinality of this mixed metric basis for $Γ$ is called the mixed metric dimension of $Γ$, denoted by $mdim(Γ)$. The concept of studying chemical structures using graph theory terminologies is both appealing and practical. It enables researchers to more precisely and easily examines various chemical topologies and networks. In this paper, we consider two well known chemical structures; starphene $SP_{a,b,c}$ and six-sided hollow coronoid $HC_{a,b,c}$ and respectively compute their multiset dimension and mixed metric dimension.
A characterization of two-dimensional Buchsbaum matching complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The matching complex $M(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the set of all matchings in $G$. A Buchsbaum simplicial complex is a generalization of both a homology manifold and a Cohen--Macaulay complex. We give a complete characterization of the graphs $G$ for which $M(G)$ is a two-dimensional Buchsbaum complex. As an intermediate step, we determine which graphs have matching complexes that are themselves connected graphs.

A chain theorem for sequentially $3$-rank-connected graphs with respect to vertex-minors
Published in European J. Combin., 113:103761, October 2023 • View PublicationBIB
Tutte (1961) proved the chain theorem for simple $3$-connected graphs with respect to minors, which states that every simple $3$-connected graph $G$ has a simple $3$-connected minor with one edge fewer than $G$, unless $G$ is a wheel graph. Bouchet (1987) proved an analog for prime graphs with respect to vertex-minors. We present a chain theorem for higher connectivity with respect to vertex-minors, showing that every sequentially $3$-rank-connected graph $G$ has a sequentially $3$-rank-connected vertex-minor with one vertex fewer than $G$, unless $|V(G)|\leq 12$.
Improved pyrotechnics : Closer to the burning graph conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Burning Number Conjecture claims that for every connected graph $G$ of order $n,$ its burning number satisfies $b(G) \le \lceil \sqrt{n} \rceil.$ While the conjecture remains open, we prove that it is asymptotically true when the order of the graph is much larger than its \emph{growth}, which is the maximal distance of a vertex to a well-chosen path in the graph. We prove that the conjecture for graphs of bounded growth reduces to a finite number of cases. We provide the best-known bound on the burning number of a connected graph $G$ of order $n,$ given by $b(G) \le \sqrt{4n/3} + 1,$ improving on the previously known $\sqrt{3n/2}+O(1)$ bound. Using the improved upper bound, we show that the conjecture almost holds for all graphs with minimum degree at least $3$ and holds for all large enough graphs with minimum degree at least $4$. The previous best-known result was for graphs with minimum degree $23$.

The biharmonic index of connected graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph with the vertex set $V(G)$ and $d_{B}^2(u,v)$ be the biharmonic distance between two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$. The biharmonic index $BH(G)$ of $G$ is defined as $$BH(G)=\frac{1}{2}\sum\limits_{u\in V(G)}\sum\limits_{v\in V(G)}d_{B}^2(u,v)=n\sum\limits_{i=2}^{n}\frac{1}{λ_i^2(G)},$$ where $λ_i(G)$ is the $i$-th smallest eigenvalue of the Laplacian matrix of $G$ with $n$ vertices. In this paper, we provide the mathematical relationships between the biharmonic index and some classic topological indices: the first Zagreb index, the forgotten topological index and the Kirchhoff index. In addition, the extremal value on the biharmonic index for trees and firefly graphs of fixed order are given. Finally, some graph operations on the biharmonic index are presented.
Planar Median Graphs and Cubesquare-Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Median graphs are connected graphs in which for all three vertices there is a unique vertex that belongs to shortest paths between each pair of these three vertices. In this paper we provide several novel characterizations of planar median graphs. More specifically, we characterize when a planar graph $G$ is a median graph in terms of forbidden subgraphs and the structure of isometric cycles in $G$, and also in terms of subgraphs of $G$ that are contained inside and outside of 4-cycles with respect to an arbitrary planar embedding of $G$. These results lead us to a new characterization of planar median graphs in terms of cubesquare-graphs that is, graphs that can be obtained by starting with cubes and square graphs, and iteratively replacing 4-cycle boundaries (relative to some embedding) by cubes or square-graphs. As a corollary we also show that a graph is planar median if and only if it can be obtained from cubes and square-graphs by a sequence of ``square-boundary'' amalgamations. These considerations also lead to an $\mathcal{O}(n\log n)$-time recognition algorithm to compute a decomposition of a planar median graph with $n$ vertices into cubes and square-graphs.

Isolation of the diamond graph

A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. The diamond graph is the graph obtained from $K_4$ by deleting one edge. We prove that if $G$ is a connected graph with order $n\geq 10$, then there exists a subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ with $|S|\leq n/5$ such that the graph induced by $V(G)\setminus N[S]$ is diamond-free, where $N[S]$ is the closed neighborhood of $S$. Furthermore, the bound is sharp.

Petals and Books: The largest Laplacian spectral gap from 1
Published in Journal of Graph Theory, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that, for any connected graph on $N\geq 3$ vertices, the spectral gap from the value $1$ with respect to the normalized Laplacian is at most $1/2$. Moreover, we show that equality is achieved if and only if the graph is either a petal graph (for $N$ odd) or a book graph (for $N$ even). This implies that $(\frac12,\frac32)$ is a maximal gap interval for the normalized Laplacian on connected graphs. This is closely related to the Alon-Boppana bound on regular graphs and a recent result by Kollár and Sarnak on cubic graphs. Our result also provides a sharp bound for the convergence rate of some eigenvalues of the Laplacian on neighborhood graphs.
Gallai's path decomposition in planar graphs
In 1968, Gallai conjectured that the edges of any connected graph with $n$ vertices can be partitioned into $\lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil$ paths. We show that this conjecture is true for every planar graph. More precisely, we show that every connected planar graph except $K_3$ and $K_5^-$ ($K_5$ minus one edge) can be decomposed into $\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor$ paths.

RNA Number of Some Parity Signed Generalized Petersen Graphs
A signed graph $Σ=(G,σ)$ is said to be parity signed if there exists a bijection $f : V(G) \rightarrow \{1,2,...,|V(G)|\}$ such that $σ(uv)=+$ if and only if $f(u)$ and $f(v)$ are of same parity, where $uv$ is an edge of $G$. The rna number of a graph $G$, denoted $σ^{-}(G)$, is the minimum number of negative edges among all possible parity signed graphs over $G$. The rna number is also equal to the minimum cut size that has nearly equal sides. In this paper, for generalized Petersen graph $P(n,k)$, we prove that $3 \leq σ^{-}(P(n,k)) \leq n$ and these bounds are sharp. The exact value of $σ^{-}(P(n,k))$ is determined for $k=1,2$. Some famous generalized Petersen graphs namely, Petersen graph $P(5,2)$, Durer graph $P(6,2)$, Mobius-Kantor graph $P(8,3)$, Dodecahedron $P(10,2)$, Desargues graph $P(10,3)$ and Nauru graph $P(12,5)$ are also treated. We show that the minimum order of a $(4n-1)$-regular graph having rna number one is bounded above by $12n-2$. The sharpness of this upper bound is also shown for $n=1$. We also show that the minimum order of a $(4n+1)$-regular graph having rna number one is $8n+6$. Finally, for any simple connected graph of order $n$, we propose an $O(2^n + n^{\lfloor \frac{n}{2} \rfloor})$ time algorithm for computing its rna number.

Isolation of connected graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a connected $n$-vertex graph $G$ and a set $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, let $ι(G,\mathcal{F})$ denote the size of a smallest set $D$ of vertices of $G$ such that the graph obtained from $G$ by deleting the closed neighbourhood of $D$ contains no graph in $\mathcal{F}$. Let $\mathcal{E}_k$ denote the set of connected graphs that have at least $k$ edges. By a result of Caro and Hansberg, $ι(G,\mathcal{E}_1) \leq n/3$ if $n \neq 2$ and $G$ is not a $5$-cycle. The author recently showed that if $G$ is not a triangle and $\mathcal{C}$ is the set of cycles, then $ι(G,\mathcal{C}) \leq n/4$. We improve this result by showing that $ι(G,\mathcal{E}_3) \leq n/4$ if $G$ is neither a triangle nor a $7$-cycle. Let $r$ be the number of vertices of $G$ that have only one neighbour. We determine a set $\mathcal{S}$ of six graphs such that $ι(G,\mathcal{E}_2) \leq (4n - r)/14$ if $G$ is not a copy of a member of $\mathcal{S}$. The bounds are sharp.

Flexing infinite frameworks with applications to braced Penrose tilings
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics. 324:1--17, 2023 • View PublicationBIB
A planar framework -- a graph together with a map of its vertices to the plane -- is flexible if it allows a continuous deformation preserving the distances between adjacent vertices. Extending a recent previous result, we prove that a connected graph with a countable vertex set can be realized as a flexible framework if and only if it has a so-called NAC-coloring. The tools developed to prove this result are then applied to frameworks where every 4-cycle is a parallelogram, and countably infinite graphs with $n$-fold rotational symmetry. With this, we determine a simple combinatorial characterization that determines whether the 1-skeleton of a Penrose rhombus tiling with a given set of braced rhombi will have a flexible motion, and also whether the motion will preserve 5-fold rotational symmetry.

High-rate storage codes on triangle-free graphs
Published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2022, vol. 68, no. 12, pp. 7787-7797 • View PublicationBIB
Consider an assignment of bits to the vertices of a connected graph $G(V,E)$ with the property that the value of each vertex is a function of the values of its neighbors. A collection of such assignments is called a {\em storage code} of length $|V|$ on $G$. The storage code problem can be equivalently formulated as maximizing the probability of success in a {\em guessing game} on graphs, or constructing {\em index codes} of small rate. If $G$ contains many cliques, it is easy to construct codes of rate close to 1, so a natural problem is to construct high-rate codes on triangle-free graphs, where constructing codes of rate $>1/2$ is a nontrivial task, with few known results. In this work we construct infinite families of linear storage codes with high rate relying on coset graphs of binary linear codes. We also derive necessary conditions for such codes to have high rate, and even rate potentially close to one. We also address correction of multiple erasures in the codeword, deriving recovery guarantees based on expansion properties of the graph. Finally, we point out connections between linear storage codes and quantum CSS codes, a link to bootstrap percolation and contagion spread in graphs, and formulate a number of open problems.
