Oriented trees and paths in digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Which conditions ensure that a digraph contains all oriented paths of some given length, or even a all oriented trees of some given size, as a subgraph? One possible condition could be that the host digraph is a tournament of a certain order. In arbitrary digraphs and oriented graphs, conditions on the chromatic number, on the edge density, on the minimum outdegree and on the minimum semidegree have been proposed. In this survey, we review the known results, and highlight some open questions in the area.

Mixed pairwise cross intersecting families (I)
An $(n, k_1, \dots, k_t)$-cross intersecting system is a set of non-empty pairwise cross-intersecting families $\mathcal{F}_1\subset{[n]\choose k_1}, \mathcal{F}_2\subset{[n]\choose k_2}, \dots, \mathcal{F}_t\subset{[n]\choose k_t}$ with $t\geq 2$ and $k_1\geq k_2\geq \cdots \geq k_t$. If an $(n, k_1, \dots, k_t)$-cross intersecting system contains at least two families which are cross intersecting freely and at least two families which are cross intersecting but not freely, then we say that the cross intersecting system is of mixed type. All previous studies are on non-mixed type, i.e, under the condition that $n \ge k_1+k_2$. In this paper, we study for the first interesting mixed type, an $(n, k_1, \dots, k_t)$-cross intersecting system with $k_1+k_3\leq n <k_1+k_2$, i.e., families $\mathcal{F}_i\subseteq {[n]\choose k_i}$ and $\mathcal{F}_j\subseteq {[n]\choose k_j}$ are cross intersecting freely if and only if $\{i, j\}=\{1, 2\}$. Let $M(n, k_1, \dots, k_t)$ denote the maximum sum of sizes of families in an $(n, k_1, \dots, k_t)$-cross intersecting system. We determine $M(n, k_1, \dots, k_t)$ and characterize all extremal $(n, k_1, \dots, k_t)$-cross intersecting systems for $k_1+k_3\leq n <k_1+k_2$. We think that the characterization of maximal cross intersecting L-initial families and the unimodality of functions in this paper are interesting in their own, in addition to the extremal result. The most general condition on $n$ is that $n\ge k_1+k_t$. This paper provides foundation work for the solution to the most general condition $n\ge k_1+k_t$.
Rainbow subgraphs of uniformly coloured randomly perturbed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a given $δ\in (0,1)$, the randomly perturbed graph model is defined as the union of any $n$-vertex graph $G_0$ with minimum degree $δn$ and the binomial random graph $\mathbf{G}(n,p)$ on the same vertex set. Moreover, we say that a graph is uniformly coloured with colours in $\mathcal{C}$ if each edge is coloured independently and uniformly at random with a colour from $\mathcal{C}$. Based on a coupling idea of McDiarmird, we provide a general tool to tackle problems concerning finding a rainbow copy of a graph $H=H(n)$ in a uniformly coloured perturbed $n$-vertex graph with colours in $[(1+o(1))e(H)]$. For example, our machinery easily allows to recover a result of Aigner-Horev and Hefetz concerning rainbow Hamilton cycles, and to improve a result of Aigner-Horev, Hefetz and Lahiri concerning rainbow bounded-degree spanning trees. Furthermore, using different methods, we prove that for any $δ\in (0,1)$ and integer $d \ge 2$, there exists $C=C(δ,d)>0$ such that the following holds. Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most $d$ and $G_0$ be an $n$-vertex graph with $δ(G_0)\ge δn$. Then a uniformly coloured $G_0 \cup \mathbf{G}(n,C/n)$ with colours in $[n-1]$ contains a rainbow copy of $T$ with high probability. This is optimal both in terms of colours and edge probability (up to a constant factor).

Induced subdivisions in $K_{s,s}$-free graphs with polynomial average degree
In this paper we prove that for every $s\geq 2$ and every graph $H$ the following holds. Let $G$ be a graph with average degree $Ω_H(s^{C|H|^2})$, for some absolute constant $C>0$, then $G$ either contains a $K_{s,s}$ or an induced subdivision of $H$. This is essentially tight and confirms a conjecture of Bonamy, Bousquet, Pilipczuk, Rzążewski, Thomassé, and Walczak. A slightly weaker form of this has been independently proved by Bourneuf, Bucić, Cook, and Davies. We actually prove a much more general result which implies the above (with worse dependence on $|H|$). We show that for every $ k\geq 2$ there is $C_k>0$ such that any graph $G$ with average degree $s^{C_k}$ either contains a $K_{s,s}$ or an induced subgraph $G'\subseteq G$ without $C_4$'s and with average degree at least $k$. Finally, using similar methods we can prove the following. For every $k,t\geq 2$ every graph $G$ with average degree at least $C_tk^{Ω(t)}$ must contain either a $K_k$, an induced $K_{t,t}$ or an induced subdivision of $K_k$. This is again essentially tight up to the implied constants and answers in a strong form a question of Davies.

On the $C_4$-isolation number of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $C_k$ be the cycle of length $k$. For any graph $G$, a subset $D \subseteq V(G)$ is a $C_k$-isolating set of $G$ if the graph obtained from $G$ by deleting the closed neighbourhood of $D$ contains no $C_k$ as a subgraph. The $C_k$-isolation number of $G$, denoted by $ι(G,C_k)$, is the cardinality of a smallest $C_k$-isolating set of $G$. Borg (2020) and Borg et al. (2022) proved that if $G \ncong C_3$ is a connected graph of order $n$ and size $m$, then $ι(G,C_3) \leq \frac{n}{4}$ and $ι(G,C_3) \leq \frac{m+1}{5}$. Very recently, Bartolo, Borg and Scicluna showed that if $G$ is a connected graph of order $n$ that is not one of the determined nine graphs, then $ι(G,C_4) \leq \frac{n}{5}$. In this paper, we prove that if $G \ncong C_4$ is a connected graph of size $m$, then $ι(G,C_4) \leq \frac{m+1}{6}$, and we characterize the graphs that attain the bound. Moreover, we conjecture that if $G \ncong C_k$ is a connected graph of size $m$, then $ι(G,C_k) \leq \frac{m+1}{k+2}$.

A conjecture by Bienvenu and Geroldinger on power monoids
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 153 (2025), No. 3, 913-919 • View Publication • BIB
Let $S$ be a numerical monoid, i.e., a submonoid of the additive monoid $(\mathbb N, +)$ of non-negative integers such that $\mathbb N \setminus S$ is finite. Endowed with the operation of set addition, the family of all finite subsets of $S$ containing $0$ is itself a monoid, which we denote by $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin}, 0}(S)$. We show that, if $S_1$ and $S_2$ are numerical monoids and $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin}, 0}(S_1)$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal P_{{\rm fin}, 0}(S_2)$, then $S_1 = S_2$. (In fact, we establish a more general result, in which $S_1$ and $S_2$ are allowed to be subsets of the non-negative rational numbers that contain zero and are closed under addition.) This proves a conjecture of Bienvenu and Geroldinger.

Towards Erdős-Hajnal property for dp-minimal graphs
We introduce the notion of strongly $\binom{k}{2}$-free graphs, which contain dp-minimal graphs. We show that under some sparsity assumption, given a rainbow $\binom{k}{2}$-free blockade we can find a rainbow $\binom{k-1}{2}$-free blockade. This might serve as an intermediate step towards Erd\H os-Hajnal property for dp-minimal graphs.

Odd-Sunflowers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Extending the notion of sunflowers, we call a family of at least two sets an odd-sunflower if every element of the underlying set is contained in an odd number of sets or in none of them. It follows from the Erd\H os--Szemerédi conjecture, recently proved by Naslund and Sawin, that there is a constant $μ<2$ such that every family of subsets of an $n$-element set that contains no odd-sunflower consists of at most $μ^n$ sets. We construct such families of size at least $1.5021^n$. We also characterize minimal odd-sunflowers of triples.
Topological methods in zero-sum Ramsey theory
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 13 (2025) e192 • View Publication • BIB
A cornerstone result of Erd\H os, Ginzburg, and Ziv (EGZ) states that any sequence of $2n-1$ elements in $\mathbb{Z}/n$ contains a zero-sum subsequence of length $n$. While algebraic techniques have predominated in deriving many deep generalizations of this theorem over the past sixty years, here we introduce topological approaches to zero-sum problems which have proven fruitful in other combinatorial contexts. Our main result (1) is a topological criterion for determining when any $\mathbb{Z}/n$-coloring of an $n$-uniform hypergraph contains a zero-sum hyperedge. In addition to applications for Kneser hypergraphs, for complete hypergraphs our methods recover Olson's generalization of the EGZ theorem for arbitrary finite groups. Furthermore, we (2) give a fractional generalization of the EGZ theorem with applications to balanced set families and (3) provide a constrained EGZ theorem which imposes combinatorial restrictions on zero-sum sequences in the original result.

A characterization on orientations of graphs avoiding given lists on out-degrees
Let $G$ be a graph and $F:V(G)\to2^N$ be a set function. The graph $G$ is said to be \emph{F-avoiding} if there exists an orientation $O$ of $G$ such that $d^+_O(v)\notin F(v)$ for every $v\in V(G)$, where $d^+_O(v)$ denotes the out-degree of $v$ in the directed graph $G$ with respect to $O$. In this paper, we give a Tutte-type good characterization to decide the $F$-avoiding problem when for every $v\in V(G)$, $|F(v)|\leq \frac{1}{2}(d_G(v)+1)$ and $F(v)$ contains no two consecutive integers. Our proof also gives a simple polynomial algorithm to find a desired orientation. As a corollary, we prove the following result: if for every $v\in V(G)$, $|F(v)|\leq \frac{1}{2}(d_G(v)+1)$ and $F(v)$ contains no two consecutive integers, then $G$ is $F$-avoiding. This partly answers a problem proposed by Akbari et. al.(2020)

Towards a high-dimensional Dirac's theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Dirac's theorem determines the sharp minimum degree threshold for graphs to contain perfect matchings and Hamiltonian cycles. There have been various attempts to generalize this theorem to hypergraphs with larger uniformity by considering hypergraph matchings and Hamiltonian cycles. In this paper, we consider another natural generalization of perfect matchings, Steiner triple systems. As a Steiner triple system can be viewed as a partition of pairs of vertices, it is a natural high-dimensional analogue of a perfect matching in graphs. We prove that for sufficiently large integer $n$ with $n \equiv 1 \text{ or } 3 \pmod{6}$, any $n$-vertex $3$-uniform hypergraph $H$ with minimum codegree at least $\left(\frac{3 + \sqrt{57}}{12} + o(1) \right)n = (0.879... + o(1))n$ contains a Steiner triple system. In fact, we prove a stronger statement by considering transversal Steiner triple systems in a collection of hypergraphs. We conjecture that the number $\frac{3 + \sqrt{57}}{12}$ can be replaced with $\frac{3}{4}$ which would provide an asymptotically tight high-dimensional generalization of Dirac's theorem.

Improved lower bound towards Chen-Chvátal conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that in every metric space where no line contains all the points, there are at least $Ω(n^{2/3})$ lines. This improves the previous $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ lower bound on the number of lines in general metric space, and also improves the previous $Ω(n^{4/7})$ lower bound on the number of lines in metric spaces generated by connected graphs.

Ramsey goodness of fans
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, the Ramsey number $r(G_1,G_2)$ refers to the smallest positive integer $N$ such that any graph $G$ with $N$ vertices contains $G_1$ as a subgraph, or the complement of $G$ contains $G_2$ as a subgraph. A connected graph $H$ is said to be $p$-good if $r(K_p,H)=(p-1)(|H|-1)+1$. A generalized fan, denoted as $K_1+nH$, is formed by the disjoint union of $n$ copies of $H$ along with an additional vertex that is connected to each vertex of $nH$. Recently Chung and Lin proved that $K_1+nH$ is $p$-good for $n\ge cp\ell/|H|$, where $c\approx 52.456$ and $\ell=r(K_{p},H)$. They also posed the question of improving the lower bound of $n$ further so that $K_1+nH$ remains $p$-good. In this paper, we present three different methods to improve the range of $n$. First, we apply the Andrásfai-Erdős-Sós theorem to reduce $c$ from $52.456$ to $3$. Second, we utilize the approach established by Chen and Zhang to achieve a further reduction of $c$ to $2$. Lastly, we employ a new method to bring $c$ down to $1$. In addition, when $K_1+nH$ forms a fan graph $F_n$, we can further obtain a slightly more refined bound of $n$.

Combinatorics of the Permutahedra, Associahedra, and Friends
I present an overview of the research I have conducted for the past ten years in algebraic, bijective, enumerative, and geometric combinatorics. The two main objects I have studied are the permutahedron and the associahedron as well as the two partial orders they are related to: the weak order on permutations and the Tamari lattice. This document contains a general introduction (Chapters 1 and 2) on those objects which requires very little previous knowledge and should be accessible to non-specialist such as master students. Chapters 3 to 8 present the research I have conducted and its general context. You will find: * a presentation of the current knowledge on Tamari interval and a precise description of the family of Tamari interval-posets which I have introduced along with the rise-contact involution to prove the symmetry of the rises and the contacts in Tamari intervals; * my most recent results concerning q, t-enumeration of Catalan objects and Tamari intervals in relation with triangular partitions; * the descriptions of the integer poset lattice and integer poset Hopf algebra and their relations to well known structures in algebraic combinatorics; * the construction of the permutree lattice, the permutree Hopf algebra and permutreehedron; * the construction of the s-weak order and s-permutahedron along with the s-Tamari lattice and s-associahedron. Chapter 9 is dedicated to the experimental method in combinatorics research especially related to the SageMath software. Chapter 10 describes the outreach efforts I have participated in and some of my approach towards mathematical knowledge and inclusion.

A hypergraph analog of Dirac's Theorem for long cycles in 2-connected graphs, II: Large uniformities
Dirac proved that each $n$-vertex $2$-connected graph with minimum degree $k$ contains a cycle of length at least $\min\{2k, n\}$. We obtain analogous results for Berge cycles in hypergraphs. Recently, the authors proved an exact lower bound on the minimum degree ensuring a Berge cycle of length at least $\min\{2k, n\}$ in $n$-vertex $r$-uniform $2$-connected hypergraphs when $k \geq r+2$. In this paper we address the case $k \leq r+1$ in which the bounds have a different behavior. We prove that each $n$-vertex $r$-uniform $2$-connected hypergraph $H$ with minimum degree $k$ contains a Berge cycle of length at least $\min\{2k,n,|E(H)|\}$. If $|E(H)|\geq n$, this bound coincides with the bound of the Dirac's Theorem for 2-connected graphs.

On the topology of conormal complexes and posets of matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the poset of biflats of a matroid $M$, a Lagrangian analog of the lattice of flats of $M$, and study the topology of its order complex, which we call the biflats complex. This work continues the study of the Lagrangian combinatorics of matroids, which was recently initiated by work of Ardila, Denham and Huh. We show the biflats complex contains two distinguished subcomplexes: the conormal complex of $M$ and the simplicial join of the Bergman complexes of $M$ and $M^\perp$, the matroidal dual of $M$. Our main theorems give sequences of elementary collapses of the biflats complex onto the conormal complex and the join of the Bergman complexes of $M$ and $M^\perp$. These collapses give a combinatorial proof that the biflats complex, conormal complex and the join of the Bergman complexes of $M$ and $M^\perp$ are all simple homotopy equivalent. Although simple homotopy equivalent, these complexes have many different combinatorial properties. We collect and prove a list of such properties.

A characterization of 4-connected graphs with no $K_{3,3}+v$-minor
Published • View Publication • BIB
Among graphs with 13 edges, there are exactly three internally 4-connected graphs which are $Oct^{+}$, cube+e and $ K_{3,3} +v$. A complete characterization of all 4-connected graphs with no $Oct^{+}$-minor is given in [John Maharry, An excluded minor theorem for the octahedron plus an edge, Journal of Graph Theory 57(2) (2008) 124-130]. Let $K_{3,3}+v$ denote the graph obtained by adding a new vertex $v$ to $K_{3,3}$ and joining $v$ to the four vertices of a 4-cycle. In this paper, we determine all 4-connected graphs that do not contain $K_{3,3}+v$ as a minor.

Towards the Characterization of Terminal Cut Functions: a Condition for Laminar Families
We study the following characterization problem. Given a set $T$ of terminals and a $(2^{|T|}-2)$-dimensional vector $π$ whose coordinates are indexed by proper subsets of $T$, is there a graph $G$ that contains $T$, such that for all subsets $\emptyset\subsetneq S\subsetneq T$, $π_S$ equals the value of the min-cut in $G$ separating $S$ from $T\setminus S$? The only known necessary conditions are submodularity and a special class of linear inequalities given by Chaudhuri, Subrahmanyam, Wagner and Zaroliagis. Our main result is a new class of linear inequalities concerning laminar families, that generalize all previous ones. Using our new class of inequalities, we can generalize Karger's approximate min-cut counting result to graphs with terminals.

Transitive generalized toggle groups containing a cycle
Published • View Publication • BIB
In \cite{striker2018rowmotion} Striker generalized Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass's notion of a toggle group. In this paper we begin the study of transitive generalized toggle groups that contain a cycle. We first show that if such a group has degree $n$ and contains a transposition or a 3-cycle then the group contains $A_n$. Using the result about transpositions, we then prove that a transitive generalized toggle group that contains a short cycle must be primitive. Employing a result of Jones \cite{jones2014primitive}, which relies on the classification of the finite simple groups, we conclude that any transitive generalized toggle group of degree $n$ that contains a cycle with at least 3 fixed points must also contain $A_n$. Finally, we look at imprimitive generalized toggle groups containing a long cycle and show that they decompose into a direct product of primitive generalized toggle groups each containing a long cycle.

The Codegree, Weak Maximum Likelihood Threshold, and the Gorenstein Property of Hierarchical Models
Published in Alg. Stat. 16 (2025) 201-215 • View Publication • BIB
The codegree of a lattice polytope is the smallest integer dilate that contains a lattice point in the relative interior. The weak maximum likelihood threshold of a statistical model is the smallest number of data points for which there is a non-zero probability that the maximum likelihood estimate exists. The codegree of a marginal polytope is a lower bound on the maximum likelihood threshold of the associated log-linear model, and they are equal when the marginal polytope is normal. We prove a lower bound on the codegree in the case of hierarchical log-linear models and provide a conjectural formula for the codegree in general. As an application, we study when the marginal polytopes of hierarchical models are Gorenstein, including a classification of Gorenstein decomposable models, and a conjectural classification of Gorenstein binary hierarchical models.
