Remarks on the Erdős Matching Conjecture for Vector Spaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1965, Paul Erdős asked about the largest family $Y$ of $k$-sets in $\{ 1, \ldots, n \}$ such that $Y$ does not contain $s+1$ pairwise disjoint sets. This problem is commonly known as the Erdős Matching Conjecture. We investigate the $q$-analog of this question, that is we want to determine the size of a largest family $Y$ of $k$-spaces in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ such that $Y$ does not contain $s+1$ pairwise disjoint $k$-spaces. Here we call two subspaces disjoint if they intersect trivially. Our main result is, slightly simplified, that if $16 s \leq \min\{ q^{\frac{n-k}{4}},$ $q^{\frac{n-2k+1}{3}} \}$, then $Y$ is either small or a union of intersecting families. Thus we show the Erd\H{os} Matching Conjecture for this range. The proof uses a method due to Metsch. We also discuss constructions. In particular, we show that for larger $s$, there are large examples which are close in size to a union of intersecting families, but structurally different. As an application, we discuss the close relationship between the Erdős Matching Conjecture for vector spaces and Cameron-Liebler line classes (and their generalization to $k$-spaces), a popular topic in finite geometry for the last 30 years. More specifically, we propose the Erdős Matching Conjecture (for vector spaces) as an interesting variation of the classical research on Cameron-Liebler line classes.
Weighted Additive Spanners
Published • View Publication • BIB
A \emph{spanner} of a graph $G$ is a subgraph $H$ that approximately preserves shortest path distances in $G$. Spanners are commonly applied to compress computation on metric spaces corresponding to weighted input graphs. Classic spanner constructions can seamlessly handle edge weights, so long as error is measured \emph{multiplicatively}. In this work, we investigate whether one can similarly extend constructions of spanners with purely \emph{additive} error to weighted graphs. These extensions are not immediate, due to a key lemma about the size of shortest path neighborhoods that fails for weighted graphs. Despite this, we recover a suitable amortized version, which lets us prove direct extensions of classic $+2$ and $+4$ unweighted spanners (both all-pairs and pairwise) to $+2W$ and $+4W$ weighted spanners, where $W$ is the maximum edge weight. Specifically, we show that a weighted graph $G$ contains all-pairs (pairwise) $+2W$ and $+4W$ weighted spanners of size $O(n^{3/2})$ and $\widetilde{O}(n^{7/5})$ ($O(np^{1/3})$ and $O(np^{2/7})$) respectively. For a technical reason, the $+6$ unweighted spanner becomes a $+8W$ weighted spanner; closing this error gap is an interesting remaining open problem. That is, we show that $G$ contains all-pairs (pairwise) $+8W$ weighted spanners of size $O(n^{4/3})$ ($O(np^{1/4})$).

Three-term arithmetic progressions in subsets of $\mathbb{F}_q^{\infty}$ of large Fourier dimension
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that subsets of $\mathbb{F}_q^{\infty}$ of large Fourier dimension must contain three-term arithmetic progressions. This contrasts with a construction of Shmerkin of a subset of $\mathbb{R}$ of Fourier dimension $1$ with no three-term arithmetic progressions.
Geometric Systems of Unbiased Representatives
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $P$ be a set of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, $B$ a bicoloring of $P$ and $\Oo$ a family of geometric objects (that is, intervals, boxes, balls, etc). An object from $\Oo$ is called balanced with respect to $B$ if it contains the same number of points from each color of $B$. For a collection $\B$ of bicolorings of $P$, a geometric system of unbiased representatives (G-SUR) is a subset $\Oo'\subseteq\Oo$ such that for any bicoloring $B$ of $\B$ there is an object in $\Oo'$ that is balanced with respect to $B$. We study the problem of finding G-SURs. We obtain general bounds on the size of G-SURs consisting of intervals, size-restricted intervals, axis-parallel boxes and Euclidean balls. We show that the G-SUR problem is NP-hard even in the simple case of points on a line and interval ranges. Furthermore, we study a related problem on determining the size of the largest and smallest balanced intervals for points on the real line with a random distribution and coloring. Our results are a natural extension to a geometric context of the work initiated by Balachandran et al. on arbitrary systems of unbiased representatives.

Embedding and the rotational dimension of a graph containing a clique
Published • View Publication • BIB
The rotational dimension is a minor monotone graph invariant related to the dimension of an Euclidean space containing a spectral embedding corresponding to the first nonzero eigenvalue of the graph Laplacian, which is introduced by Göring, Helmberg and Wappler. In this paper, we study rotational dimensions of graphs which contain large complete graphs. The complete graph is characterized by its rotational dimension. It will be a obtained that a chordal graph may be made large while keeping the rotational dimension constant.

Extensions of the Art Gallery Theorem
Published • View Publication • BIB
Several domination results have been obtained for maximal outerplanar graphs (mops). The classical domination problem is to minimize the size of a set $S$ of vertices of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ such that $G - N[S]$, the graph obtained by deleting the closed neighborhood of $S$, contains no vertices. In the proof of the Art Gallery Theorem, Chvátal showed that the minimum size, called the domination number of $G$ and denoted by $γ(G)$, is at most $n/3$ if $G$ is a mop. Here we consider a modification by allowing $G - N[S]$ to have a maximum degree of at most $k$. Let $ι_k(G)$ denote the size of a smallest set $S$ for which this is achieved. If $n \le 2k+3$, then trivially $ι_k(G) \leq 1$. Let $G$ be a mop on $n \ge \max\{5,2k+3\}$ vertices, $n_2$ of which are of degree $2$. Upper bounds on $ι_k(G)$ have been obtained for $k = 0$ and $k = 1$, namely $ι_{0}(G) \le \min\{\frac{n}{4},\frac{n+n_2}{5},\frac{n-n_2}{3}\}$ and $ι_1(G) \le \min\{\frac{n}{5},\frac{n+n_2}{6},\frac{n-n_2}{3}\}$. We prove that $ι_{k}(G) \le \min\{\frac{n}{k+4},\frac{n+n_2}{k+5},\frac{n-n_2}{k+2}\}$ for any $k \ge 0$. For the original setting of the Art Gallery Theorem, the argument presented yields that if an art gallery has exactly $n$ corners and at least one of every $k + 2$ consecutive corners must be visible to at least one guard, then the number of guards needed is at most $n/(k+4)$. We also prove that $γ(G) \le \frac{n - n_2}{2}$ unless $n = 2n_2$, $n_2$ is odd, and $γ(G) = \frac{n - n_2 + 1}{2}$. Together with the inequality $γ(G) \le \frac{n+n_2}{4}$, obtained by Campos and Wakabayashi and independently by Tokunaga, this improves Chvátal's bound. The bounds are sharp.

A Strengthening of Erdős-Gallai Theorem and Proof of Woodall's Conjecture
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series B Volume 146, January 2021, Pages 76--95 • View Publication • BIB
For a 2-connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and two vertices $x,y\in V(G)$, we prove that there is an $(x,y)$-path of length at least $k$ if there are at least $\frac{n-1}{2}$ vertices in $V(G)\backslash \{x,y\}$ of degree at least $k$. This strengthens a well-known theorem due to Erdős and Gallai in 1959. As the first application of this result, we show that a 2-connected graph with $n$ vertices contains a cycle of length at least $2k$ if it has at least $\frac{n}{2}+k$ vertices of degree at least $k$. This confirms a 1975 conjecture made by Woodall. As another applications, we obtain some results which generalize previous theorems of Dirac, Erdős-Gallai, Bondy, and Fujisawa et al., present short proofs of the path case of Loebl-Komlós-Sós Conjecture which was verified by Bazgan et al. and of a conjecture of Bondy on longest cycles (for large graphs) which was confirmed by Fraisse and Fournier, and make progress on a conjecture of Bermond.

A Catlin-type Theorem for Graph Partitioning Avoiding Prescribed Subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
As an extension of the Brooks theorem, Catlin in 1979 showed that if $H$ is neither an odd cycle nor a complete graph with maximum degree $Δ(H)$, then $H$ has a vertex $Δ(H)$-coloring such that one of the color classes is a maximum independent set. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order at least $2$. A $G$-free $k$-coloring of a graph $H$ is a partition of the vertex set of $H$ into $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ such that $H[V_i]$, the subgraph induced on $V_i$, does not contain any subgraph isomorphic to $G$. As a generalization of Catlin's theorem we show that a graph $H$ has a $G$-free $\lceil{Δ(H)\over δ(G)}\rceil$-coloring for which one of the color classes is a maximum $G$-free subset of $V(H)$ if $H$ satisfies the following conditions; (1) $H$ is not isomorphic to $G$ if $G$ is regular, (2) $H$ is not isomorphic to $K_{kδ(G)+1}$ if $G \simeq K_{δ(G)+1}$, and (3) $H$ is not an odd cycle if $G$ is isomorphic to $K_2$. Indeed, we show even more, by proving that if $G_1,\ldots,G_k$ are connected graphs with minimum degrees $d_1,\ldots,d_k$, respectively, and $Δ(H)=\sum_{i=1}^{k}d_k$, then there is a partition of vertices of $H$ to $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ such that each $H[V_i]$ is $G_i$-free and moreover one of $V_i$s can be chosen in a way that $H[V_i]$ is a maximum $G_i$-free subset of $V(H)$ except either $k=1$ and $H$ is isomorphic to $G_1$, each $G_i$ is isomorphic to $K_{d_i+1}$ and $H$ is not isomorphic to $K_{Δ(H)+1}$, or each $G_i$ is isomorphic to $K_{2}$ and $H$ is not an odd cycle.

The threshold bias of the clique-factor game
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $r \ge 4$ be an integer and consider the following game on the complete graph $K_n$ for $n \in r \mathbb{Z}$: Two players, Maker and Breaker, alternately claim previously unclaimed edges of $K_n$ such that in each turn Maker claims one and Breaker claims $b \in \mathbb{N}$ edges. Maker wins if her graph contains a $K_r$-factor, that is a collection of $n/r$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_r$, and Breaker wins otherwise. In other words, we consider a $b$-biased $K_r$-factor Maker-Breaker game. We show that the threshold bias for this game is of order $n^{2/(r+2)}$. This makes a step towards determining the threshold bias for making bounded-degree spanning graphs and extends a result of Allen et al.\ who resolved the case $r \in \{3,4\}$ up to a logarithmic factor.

On graphs having minimal fourth adjacency coefficient
Let $G$ be a graph with order $n$ and adjacency matrix $\mathbf{A}(G)$. The adjacency polynomial of $G$ is defined as $φ(G;λ) =det(λ\mathbf{I}-\mathbf{A}(G))=\sum_{i=0}^n\mathbf{a_i}(G)λ^{n-i}$. Hereafter, $\mathbf{a}_i(G)$ is called the $i$-th adjacency coefficient of $G$. Denote by $\mathfrak{G}_{n,m}$ the set of all connected graphs having $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. A graph $G$ is said $4$-Sachs minimal if $$\mathbf{a}_4(G)=min\{\mathbf{a}_4(H)|H\in \mathfrak{G}_{n,m}\}.$$ The value $min\{\mathbf{a}_4(H)|H\in \mathfrak{G}_{n,m}\}$ is called the minimal $4$-Sachs number in $\mathfrak{G}_{n,m}$, denoted by $\bar{\mathbf{a}}_4(\mathfrak{G}_{n,m})$. In this paper, we study the relationship between the value $\mathbf{a}_4(G)$ and its structural properties. Especially, we give a structural characterization on $4$-Sachs minimal graphs, showing that each $4$-Sachs minimal graph contains a difference graph as its spanning subgraph (see Theorem 8). Then, for $n\ge 4$ and $n-1\le m\le 2n-4$, we determine all $4$-Sachs minimal graphs together with the corresponding minimal $4$-Sachs number $\bar{\mathbf{a}}_4(\mathfrak{G}_{n,m})$.

On flips in planar matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we investigate the structure of flip graphs on non-crossing perfect matchings in the plane. Specifically, consider all non-crossing straight-line perfect matchings on a set of $2n$ points that are placed equidistantly on the unit circle. A flip operation on such a matching replaces two matching edges that span an empty quadrilateral with the other two edges of the quadrilateral, and the flip is called centered if the quadrilateral contains the center of the unit circle. The graph $\mathcal{G}_n$ has those matchings as vertices, and an edge between any two matchings that differ in a flip, and it is known to have many interesting properties. In this paper we focus on the spanning subgraph $\mathcal{H}_n$ of $\mathcal{G}_n$ obtained by taking all edges that correspond to centered flips, omitting edges that correspond to non-centered flips. We show that the graph $\mathcal{H}_n$ is connected for odd $n$, but has exponentially many small connected components for even $n$, which we characterize and count via Catalan and generalized Narayana numbers. For odd $n$, we also prove that the diameter of $\mathcal{H}_n$ is linear in $n$. Furthermore, we determine the minimum and maximum degree of $\mathcal{H}_n$ for all $n$, and characterize and count the corresponding vertices. Our results imply the non-existence of certain rainbow cycles in $\mathcal{G}_n$, and they resolve several open questions and conjectures raised in a recent paper by Felsner, Kleist, Mütze, and Sering.

Max Min vertex cover and the size of Betti tables
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on $n$ vertices, that contains no isolated vertices, and let $I(G) \subseteq S = K[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ be its edge ideal. In this paper, we study the pair of integers that measure the projective dimension and the regularity of $S/I(G)$. We show that if the projective dimension of $S/I(G)$ attains its minimum value $2\sqrt{n}-2$ then, with only one exception, the its regularity must be 1. We also provide a full description for the spectrum of the projective dimension of $S/I(G)$ when the regularity attains its minimum value 1.

Repeated patterns in proper colourings
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a fixed graph $H$, what is the smallest number of colours $C$ such that there is a proper edge-colouring of the complete graph $K_n$ with $C$ colours containing no two vertex-disjoint colour-isomorphic copies, or repeats, of $H$? We study this function and its generalisation to more than two copies using a variety of combinatorial, probabilistic and algebraic techniques. For example, we show that for any tree $T$ there exists a constant $c$ such that any proper edge-colouring of $K_n$ with at most $c n^2$ colours contains two repeats of $T$, while there are colourings with at most $c' n^{3/2}$ colours for some absolute constant $c'$ containing no three repeats of any tree with at least two edges. We also show that for any graph $H$ containing a cycle there exist $k$ and $c$ such that there is a proper edge-colouring of $K_n$ with at most $c n$ colours containing no $k$ repeats of $H$, while, for a tree $T$ with $m$ edges, a colouring with $o(n^{(m+1)/m})$ colours contains $ω(1)$ repeats of $T$.
Excluding a ladder
Published in Combinatorica, 42:405--432, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
A ladder is a $2 \times k$ grid graph. When does a graph class $\mathcal{C}$ exclude some ladder as a minor? We show that this is the case if and only if all graphs $G$ in $\mathcal{C}$ admit a proper vertex coloring with a bounded number of colors such that for every $2$-connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, there is a color that appears exactly once in $H$. This type of vertex coloring is a relaxation of the notion of centered coloring, where for every connected subgraph $H$ of $G$, there must be a color that appears exactly once in $H$. The minimum number of colors in a centered coloring of $G$ is the treedepth of $G$, and it is known that classes of graphs with bounded treedepth are exactly those that exclude a fixed path as a subgraph, or equivalently, as a minor. In this sense, the structure of graphs excluding a fixed ladder as a minor resembles the structure of graphs without long paths. Another similarity is as follows: It is an easy observation that every connected graph with two vertex-disjoint paths of length $k$ has a path of length $k+1$. We show that every $3$-connected graph which contains as a minor a union of sufficiently many vertex-disjoint copies of a $2 \times k$ grid has a $2 \times (k+1)$ grid minor. Our structural results have applications to poset dimension. We show that posets whose cover graphs exclude a fixed ladder as a minor have bounded dimension. This is a new step towards the goal of understanding which graphs are unavoidable as minors in cover graphs of posets with large dimension.

On directed version of the Sauer-Spender Theorem
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraph of order $n$ and let $W$ be any subset of $V$. We define the minimum semi-degree of $W$ in $D$ to be $δ^0(W)=\mbox{min}\{δ^+(W),δ^-(W)\}$, where $δ^+(W)$ is the minimum out-degree of $W$ in $D$ and $δ^-(W)$ is the minimum in-degree of $W$ in $D$. Let $k$ be an integer with $k\geq 1$. In this paper, we prove that for any positive integer partition $|W|=\sum_{i=1}^{k}n_i$ with $n_i\geq 2$ for each $i$, if $δ^0(W)\geq \frac{3n-3}{4}$, then there are $k$ vertex disjoint cycles $C_1,\ldots,C_k$ in $D$ such that each $C_i$ contains exactly $n_i$ vertices of $W$. Moreover, the lower bound of $δ^0(W)$ can be improved to $\frac{n}{2}$ if $k=1$, and $\frac{n}{2}+|W|-1$ if $n\geq 2|W|$. The minimum semi-degree condition $δ^0(W)\geq \frac{3n-3}{4}$ is sharp in some sense and this result partially confirms the conjecture posed by Wang [Graphs and Combinatorics 16 (2000) 453-462]. It is also a directed version of the Sauer-Spender Theorem on vertex disjoint cycles in graphs [J. Combin. Theory B, 25 (1978) 295-302].

On a problem of Erdős about graphs whose size is the Turán number plus one
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider finite simple graphs. Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $n,$ the Turán number of $H$ for the order $n,$ denoted ${\rm ex}(n,H),$ is the maximum size of a graph of order $n$ not containing $H$ as a subgraph. Erdős posed the following problem in 1990: "For which graphs $H$ is it true that every graph on $n$ vertices and ${\rm ex}(n,H)+1$ edges contains at least two $H$s? Perhaps this is always true." We solve the second part of this problem in the negative by proving that for every integer $k\ge 4,$ there exists a graph $H$ of order $k$ and at least two orders $n$ such that there exists a graph of order $n$ and size ${\rm ex}(n,H)+1$ which contains exactly one copy of $H.$ Denote by $C_4$ the $4$-cycle. We also prove that for every integer $n$ with $6\le n\le 11,$ there exists a graph of order $n$ and size ${\rm ex}(n,C_4)+1$ which contains exactly one copy of $C_4,$ but for $n=12$ or $n=13,$ the minimum number of copies of $C_4$ in a graph of order $n$ and size ${\rm ex}(n,C_4)+1$ is $2.$

Lengths of extremal square-free ternary words
Published • View Publication • BIB
A square-free word $w$ over a fixed alphabet $Σ$ is extremal if every word obtained from $w$ by inserting a single letter from $Σ$ (at any position) contains a square. Grytczuk et al. recently introduced the concept of extremal square-free word, and demonstrated that there are arbitrarily long extremal square-free ternary words. We find all lengths which admit an extremal square-free ternary word. In particular, we show that there is an extremal square-free ternary word of every sufficiently large length. We also solve the analogous problem for circular words.

General upper bound on the game domination number
It is conjectured that the game domination number is at most $3n/5$ for every $n$-vertex graph which does not contain isolated vertices. It was proved in the recent years that the conjecture holds for several graph classes, including the class of forests and that of graphs with minimum degree at least two. Here we prove that the slightly bigger upper bound $5n/8$ is valid for every isolate-free graph.

Maximal arcs, codes, and new links between projective planes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we consider binary linear codes spanned by incidence matrices of Steiner 2-designs associated with maximal arcs in projective planes of even order, and their dual codes. Upper and lower bounds on the 2-rank of the incidence matrices are derived. A lower bound on the minimum distance of the dual codes is proved, and it is shown that the bound is achieved if and only if the related maximal arc contains a hyperoval of the plane. The binary linear codes of length 52 spanned by the incidence matrices of 2-$(52,4,1)$ designs associated with previously known and some newly found maximal arcs of degree 4 in projective planes of order 16 are analyzed and classified up to equivalence. The classification shows that some designs associated with maximal arcs in nonisomorphic planes generate equivalent codes. This phenomenon establishes new links between several of the known planes. A conjecture concerning the codes of maximal arcs in $PG(2,2^m)$ is formulated.

Rainbow independent sets on dense graph classes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a family $\mathcal{I}$ of independent sets in a graph, a rainbow independent set is an independent set $I$ such that there is an injection $φ\colon I\to \mathcal{I}$ where for each $v\in I$, $v$ is contained in $φ(v)$. Aharoni, Briggs, J. Kim, and M. Kim [Rainbow independent sets in certain classes of graphs. arXiv:1909.13143] determined for various graph classes $\mathcal{C}$ whether $\mathcal{C}$ satisfies a property that for every $n$, there exists $N=N(\mathcal{C},n)$ such that every family of $N$ independent sets of size $n$ in a graph in $\mathcal{C}$ contains a rainbow independent set of size $n$. In this paper, we add two dense graph classes satisfying this property, namely, the class of graphs of bounded neighborhood diversity and the class of $r$-powers of graphs in a bounded expansion class.
