On grids in point-line arrangements in the plane
Published in Discrete and Computational Geometry 2020 • View Publication • BIB
The famous Szemerédi-Trotter theorem states that any arrangement of $n$ points and $n$ lines in the plane determines $O(n^{4/3})$ incidences, and this bound is tight. In this paper, we prove the following Turán-type result for point-line incidence. Let $\mathcal{L}_1$ and $\mathcal{L}_2$ be two sets of $t$ lines in the plane and let $P=\{\ell_1 \cap \ell_2 : \ell_1 \in \mathcal{L}_1, \ell_2 \in \mathcal{L}_2\}$ be the set of intersection points between $\mathcal{L}_1$ and $\mathcal{L}_2$. We say that $(P, \mathcal{L}_1 \cup \mathcal{L}_2)$ forms a \emph{natural $t\times t$ grid} if $|P| =t^2$, and $conv(P)$ does not contain the intersection point of some two lines in $\mathcal{L}_i,$ for $i = 1,2.$ For fixed $t > 1$, we show that any arrangement of $n$ points and $n$ lines in the plane that does not contain a natural $t\times t$ grid determines $O(n^{\frac{4}{3}- \varepsilon})$ incidences, where $\varepsilon = \varepsilon(t)$. We also provide a construction of $n$ points and $n$ lines in the plane that does not contain a natural $2 \times 2$ grid and determines at least $Ω({n^{1+\frac{1}{14}}})$ incidences.

The 2-Factor Polynomial Detects Even Perfect Matchings
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 27 (2020), no. 2, Paper No. 2.27, 16pp • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we prove that the 2-factor polynomial, an invariant of a planar trivalent graph with a perfect matching, counts the number of 2- factors that contain the the perfect matching as a subgraph. Consequently, we show that the polynomial detects even perfect matchings.
The number of Gallai k-colorings of complete graphs
An edge coloring of the $n$-vertex complete graph, $K_n$, is a Gallai coloring if it does not contain any rainbow triangle, that is, a triangle whose edges are colored with three distinct colors. We prove that for $n$ large and every $k$ with $k\le 2^{n/4300}$, the number of Gallai colorings of $K_n$ that use at most $k$ given colors is $(\binom{k}{2}+o_n(1))\,2^{\binom{n}{2}}$. Our result is asymptotically best possible and implies that, for those $k$, almost all Gallai $k$-colorings use only two colors. However, this is not true for $k \ge Ω(2^{2n})$.
On DP-Coloring of Digraphs
DP-coloring is a relatively new coloring concept by Dvořák and Postle and was introduced as an extension of list-colorings of (undirected) graphs. It transforms the problem of finding a list-coloring of a given graph $G$ with a list-assignment $L$ to finding an independent transversal in an auxiliary graph with vertex set $\{(v,c) ~|~ v \in V(G), c \in L(v)\}$. In this paper, we extend the definition of DP-colorings to digraphs using the approach from Neumann-Lara where a coloring of a digraph is a coloring of the vertices such that the digraph does not contain any monochromatic directed cycle. Furthermore, we prove a Brooks' type theorem regarding the DP-chromatic number, which extends various results on the (list-)chromatic number of digraphs.
Automorphism Groups of nilpotent Lie algebras associated to certain graphs
Published in Communications in Algebra https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00927872.2019.1640239 • View Publication • BIB
We consider a family of 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras associated to uniform complete graphs on odd number of vertices. We prove that the symmetry group of such a graph is the holomorph of the additive cyclic group $\Z_n$. Moreover, we prove that the (Lie) automorphism group of the corresponding nilpotent Lie algebra contains the dihedral group of order $2n$ as a subgroup.

Sum-free Sets of Integers with a Forbidden Sum
A set of integers is sum-free if it contains no solution to the equation $x+y=z$. We study sum-free subsets of the set of integers $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$ for which the integer $2n+1$ cannot be represented as a sum of their elements. We prove a bound of $O(2^{n/3})$ on the number of these sets, which matches, up to a multiplicative constant, the lower bound obtained by considering all subsets of $B_n = \{ \lceil \frac{2}{3}(n+1) \rceil, \ldots, n \}$. A main ingredient in the proof is a stability theorem saying that if a subset of $[n]$ of size close to $|B_n|$ contains only a few subsets that contradict the sum-freeness or the forbidden sum, then it is almost contained in $B_n$. Our results are motivated by the question of counting symmetric complete sum-free subsets of cyclic groups of prime order. The proofs involve Freiman's $3k-4$ theorem, Green's arithmetic removal lemma, and structural results on independent sets in hypergraphs.

Isolation of cycles
For any graph $G$, let $ι_{\rm c}(G)$ denote the size of a smallest set $D$ of vertices of $G$ such that the graph obtained from $G$ by deleting the closed neighbourhood of $D$ contains no cycle. We prove that if $G$ is a connected $n$-vertex graph that is not a triangle, then $ι_{\rm c}(G) \leq n/4$. We also show that the bound is sharp. Consequently, we solve a problem of Caro and Hansberg.

The complexity of solution-free sets of integers
Given a linear equation L, a set A of integers is L-free if A does not contain any non-trivial solutions to L. Meeks and Treglown showed that for certain kinds of linear equations, it is NP-complete to decide if a given set of integers contains a solution-free subset of a given size. Also, for equations involving three variables, they showed that the problem of determining the size of the largest solution-free subset is APX-hard, and that for two such equations (representing sum-free and progression-free sets), the problem of deciding if there is a solution-free subset with at least a specified proportion of the elements is also NP-complete. We answer a number of questions posed by Meeks and Treglown, by extending the results above to all linear equations, and showing that the problems remain hard for sets of integers whose elements are polynomially bounded in the size of the set. For most of these results, the integers can all be positive as long as the coefficients do not all have the same sign. We also consider the problem of counting the number of solution-free subsets of a given set, and show that this problem is #P-complete for any linear equation in at least three variables.

The typical structure of Gallai colorings and their extremal graphs
An edge coloring of a graph $G$ is a Gallai coloring if it contains no rainbow triangle. We show that the number of Gallai $r$-colorings of $K_n$ is $\left(\binom{r}{2}+o(1)\right)2^{\binom{n}{2}}$. This result indicates that almost all Gallai $r$-colorings of $K_n$ use only 2 colors. We also study the extremal behavior of Gallai $r$-colorings among all $n$-vertex graphs. We prove that the complete graph $K_n$ admits the largest number of Gallai $3$-colorings among all $n$-vertex graphs when $n$ is sufficiently large, while for $r\geq 4$, it is the complete bipartite graph $K_{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor, \lceil n/2 \rceil}$. Our main approach is based on the hypergraph container method, developed independently by Balogh, Morris, and Samotij as well as by Saxton and Thomason, together with some stability results for containers.
1-subdivisions, fractional chromatic number and Hall ratio
The Hall ratio of a graph G is the maximum of |V(H)|/alpha(H) over all subgraphs H of G. Clearly, the Hall ratio of a graph is a lower bound for the fractional chromatic number. It has been asked whether conversely, the fractional chromatic number is upper bounded by a function of the Hall ratio. We answer this question in negative, by showing two results of independent interest regarding 1-subdivisions (the 1-subdivision of a graph is obtained by subdividing each edge exactly once). * For every c > 0, every graph of sufficiently large average degree contains as a subgraph the 1-subdivision of a graph of fractional chromatic number at least c. * For every d > 0, there exists a graph G of average degree at least d such that every graph whose 1-subdivision appears as a subgraph of G has Hall ratio at most 18. We also discuss the consequences of these results in the context of graph classes with bounded expansion.

Qualitative graph limit theory. Cantor Dynamical Systems and Constant-Time Distributed Algorithms
The goal of the paper is to lay the foundation for the qualitative analogue of the classical, quantitative sparse graph limit theory. In the first part of the paper we introduce the qualitative analogues of the Benjamini-Schramm and local-global graph limit theories for sparse graphs. The natural limit objects are continuous actions of finitely generated groups on totally disconnected compact metric spaces. We prove that the space of weak equivalent classes of free Cantor actions is compact and contains a smallest element, as in the measurable case. We will introduce and study various notions of almost finiteness, the qualitative analogue of hyperfiniteness, for classes of bounded degree graphs. We prove the almost finiteness of a new class of étale groupoids associated to Cantor actions and construct an example of a nonamenable, almost finite totally disconnected étale groupoid, answering a query of Suzuki. Motivated by the notions and results on qualitative graph limits, in the second part of our paper we give a precise definition of constant-time distributed algorithms on sparse graphs. We construct such constant-time algorithms for various approximation problems for hyperfinite and almost finite graph classes. We also prove the Hausdorff convergence of the spectra of convergent graph sequences in the strongly almost finite category.

On zero-free regions for the anti-ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded-degree graphs
Published in Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré Comb. Phys. Interact. 8 (2021), no. 3, pp. 459--489 • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G=(V,E)$, $k\in \mathbb{N}$, and a complex number $w$ the partition function of the univariate Potts model is defined as \[ {\bf Z}(G;k,w):=\sum_{φ:V\to [k]}\prod_{\substack{uv\in E \\ φ(u)=φ(v)}}w, \] where $[k]:=\{1,\ldots,k\}$. In this paper we give zero-free regions for the partition function of the anti-ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded degree graphs. In particular we show that for any $Δ\in \mathbb{N}$ and any $k\geq eΔ+1$, there exists an open set $U$ in the complex plane that contains the interval $[0,1)$ such that ${\bf Z}(G;k,w)\neq 0$ for any $w\in U$ and any graph $G$ of maximum degree at most $Δ$. (Here $e$ denotes the base of the natural logarithm.) For small values of $Δ$ we are able to give better results. As an application of our results we obtain improved bounds on $k$ for the existence of deterministic approximation algorithms for counting the number of proper $k$-colourings of graphs of small maximum degree.

On colorful edge triples in edge-colored complete graphs
An edge-coloring of the complete graph $K_n$ we call $F$-caring if it leaves no $F$-subgraph of $K_n$ monochromatic and at the same time every subset of $|V(F)|$ vertices contains in it at least one completely multicolored version of $F$. For the first two meaningful cases, when $F=K_{1,3}$ and $F=P_4$ we determine for infinitely many $n$ the minimum number of colors needed for an $F$-caring edge-coloring of $K_n$. An explicit family of $2\lceil\log_2 n\rceil$ $3$-edge-colorings of $K_n$ so that every quadruple of its vertices contains a totally multicolored $P_4$ in at least one of them is also presented. Investigating related Ramsey-type problems we also show that the Shannon (OR-)capacity of the Grötzsch graph is strictly larger than that of the five length cycle.

Polylogarithmic bounds in the nilpotent Freiman theorem
We show that if $A$ is a finite $K$-approximate subgroup of an $s$-step nilpotent group then there is a finite normal subgroup $H\subset A^{K^{O_s(1)}}$ modulo which $A^{O_s(\log^{O_s(1)}K)}$ contains a nilprogression of rank at most $O_s(\log^{O_s(1)}K)$ and size at least $\exp(-O_s(\log^{O_s(1)}K))|A|$. This partially generalises the close-to-optimal bounds obtained in the abelian case by Sanders, and improves the bounds and simplifies the exposition of an earlier result of the author. Combined with results of Breuillard-Green, Breuillard-Green-Tao, Gill-Helfgott-Pyber-Szabó, and the author, this leads to improved rank bounds in Freiman-type theorems in residually nilpotent groups and certain linear groups of bounded degree.
Partitioning the power set of $[n]$ into $C_k$-free parts
We show that for $n \geq 3, n\ne 5$, in any partition of $\mathcal{P}(n)$, the set of all subsets of $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$, into $2^{n-2}-1$ parts, some part must contain a triangle --- three different subsets $A,B,C\subseteq [n]$ such that $A\cap B$, $A\cap C$, and $B\cap C$ have distinct representatives. This is sharp, since by placing two complementary pairs of sets into each partition class, we have a partition into $2^{n-2}$ triangle-free parts. We also address a more general Ramsey-type problem: for a given graph $G$, find (estimate) $f(n,G)$, the smallest number of colors needed for a coloring of $\mathcal{P}(n)$, such that no color class contains a Berge-$G$ subhypergraph. We give an upper bound for $f(n,G)$ for any connected graph $G$ which is asymptotically sharp (for fixed $k$) when $G=C_k, P_k, S_k$, a cycle, path, or star with $k$ edges. Additional bounds are given for $G=C_4$ and $G=S_3$.
Projection inequalities for antichains
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics 238 (2020), no.1, 61--90 • View Publication • BIB
A set $A \subseteq {\mathbb{R}}^n$ is called an antichain (resp. antichain) if it does not contain two distinct elements ${\mathbf x}=(x_1,\ldots, x_n)$ and ${\mathbf y}=(y_1,\ldots, y_n)$ satisfying $x_i\le y_i$ (resp. $x_i < y_i$) for all $i\in \{1,\ldots,n\}$. We show that the Hausdorff dimension of a weak antichain $A$ in the $n$-dimensional unit cube $[0,1]^n$ is at most $n-1$ and that the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of $A$ is at most $n$, which are the best possible bounds. This result is derived as a corollary of the following {\it projection inequality}, which may be of independent interest: The $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of a (weak) antichain $A\subseteq [0, 1]^n$ cannot exceed the sum of the $(n-1)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the $n$ orthogonal projections of $A$ onto the facets of the unit $n$-cube containing the origin. For the proof of this result we establish a discrete variant of the projection inequality applicable to weak antichains in ${\mathbb Z}^n$ and combine it with ideas from geometric measure theory.

Harer-Zagier generating functions, the Redfield-Polya cycle index and Cohen semilinear congruences
Harer-Zagier generating functions for Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of curves contain $n$-necklace polynomials. Taylor expansions for these polynomials depend on numbers of solutions of Cohen semilinear congruences.
Decomposition of balanced multipartite tournaments into strongly connected tournaments
Decomposing a digraph into subdigraphs with a fixed structure or property is a classical problem in graph theory and a useful tool in a number of applications of networks and communication. A digraph is strongly connected if it contains a directed path from each vertex to all others. In this paper we consider multipartite tournaments, and we study the existence of a partition of a multipartite tournament with $c$ partite sets into strongly connected $c$-tournaments. This is a continuation of the study started in 1999 by Volkmann of the existence of strongly connected subtournaments in multipartite tournaments.

Graph classes and forbidden patterns on three vertices
This paper deals with graph classes characterization and recognition. A popular way to characterize a graph class is to list a minimal set of forbidden induced subgraphs. Unfortunately this strategy usually does not lead to an efficient recognition algorithm. On the other hand, many graph classes can be efficiently recognized by techniques based on some interesting orderings of the nodes, such as the ones given by traversals. We study specifically graph classes that have an ordering avoiding some ordered structures. More precisely, we consider what we call patterns on three nodes, and the recognition complexity of the associated classes. In this domain, there are two key previous works. Damashke started the study of the classes defined by forbidden patterns, a set that contains interval, chordal and bipartite graphs among others. On the algorithmic side, Hell, Mohar and Rafiey proved that any class defined by a set of forbidden patterns can be recognized in polynomial time. We improve on these two works, by characterizing systematically all the classes defined sets of forbidden patterns (on three nodes), and proving that among the 23 different classes (up to complementation) that we find, 21 can actually be recognized in linear time. Beyond this result, we consider that this type of characterization is very useful, leads to a rich structure of classes, and generates a lot of open questions worth investigating.

We prove that consistently every bipartite graph of size $κ^+\timesκ^+$ contains either a clique or an independent subset of size $τ\timesτ$ for every $τ\inκ^+$, where $κ$ is a successor cardinal.
