The structure of graphs with no K_{3,3} immersion
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Kuratowski-Wagner Theorem asserts that a graph is planar if and only if it does not have either $K_{3,3}$ or $K_5$ as a minor. Using this Wagner obtained a precise description of all graphs with no $K_{3,3}$ minor and all graphs with no $K_5$ minor. Similar results have been achieved for the class of graphs with no $H$-minor for a number of small graphs $H$. In this paper we give a precise structure theorem for graphs which do not contain $K_{3,3}$ as an immersion. This strengthens an earlier theorem of Giannopoulou, Kamiński, and Thilikos that gives a rough description of the class of graphs with no $K_{3,3}$ or $K_5$ immersion.

Refined $q$-Trinomial Coefficients and Two Infinite Hierarchies of $q$-Series Identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
We will prove an identity involving refined $q$-trinomial coefficients. We then extend this identity to two infinite families of doubly bounded polynomial identities using transformation properties of the refined $q$-trinomials in an iterative fashion in the spirit of Bailey chains. One of these two hierarchies contains an identity which is equivalent to Capparelli's first Partition Theorem.

Dense induced bipartite subgraphs in triangle-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The problem of finding dense induced bipartite subgraphs in $H$-free graphs has a long history, and was posed 30 years ago by Erdős, Faudree, Pach and Spencer. In this paper, we obtain several results in this direction. First we prove that any $K_t$-free graph with minimum degree at least $d$ contains an induced bipartite subgraph of minimum degree at least $c_t \log d/\log \log d$, confirming (asymptotically) several conjectures by Esperet, Kang and Thomassé. Complementing this result, we further obtain optimal bounds for this problem in the case of dense triangle-free graphs, and we also answer a question of Erdős, Janson, Łuczak and Spencer.

Abelian Anti-Powers in Infinite Words
Published • View Publication • BIB
An abelian anti-power of order $k$ (or simply an abelian $k$-anti-power) is a concatenation of $k$ consecutive words of the same length having pairwise distinct Parikh vectors. This definition generalizes to the abelian setting the notion of a $k$-anti-power, as introduced in [G. Fici et al., Anti-powers in infinite words, J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A, 2018], that is a concatenation of $k$ pairwise distinct words of the same length. We aim to study whether a word contains abelian $k$-anti-powers for arbitrarily large $k$. S. Holub proved that all paperfolding words contain abelian powers of every order [Abelian powers in paper-folding words. J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A, 2013]. We show that they also contain abelian anti-powers of every order.
Exact distance graphs of product graphs
Given a graph $G$, the exact distance-$p$ graph $G^{[\natural p]}$ has $V(G)$ as its vertex set, and two vertices are adjacent whenever the distance between them in $G$ equals $p$. We present formulas describing the structure of exact distance-$p$ graphs of the Cartesian, the strong, and the lexicographic product. We prove such formulas for the exact distance-$2$ graphs of direct products of graphs. We also consider infinite grids and some other product structures. We characterize the products of graphs of which exact distance graphs are connected. The exact distance-$p$ graphs of hypercubes $Q_n$ are also studied. As these graphs contain generalized Johnson graphs as induced subgraphs, we use some known and find some new constructions of their colorings. These constructions are applied for colorings of the exact distance-$p$ graphs of hypercubes with the focus on the chromatic number of $Q_{n}^{[\natural p]}$ for $p\in \{n-2,n-3,n-4\}$.

Circuits through prescribed edges

We prove that a connected graph contains a circuit---a closed walk that repeats no edges---through any $k$ prescribed edges if and only if it contains no odd cut of size at most $k$.
New Bounds for the Dichromatic Number of a Digraph
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 21 no. 1, ICGT 2018 (May 23, 2019) dmtcs:4914 • View Publication • BIB
The chromatic number of a graph $G$, denoted by $χ(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ admits a $k$-coloring of its vertex set in such a way that each color class is an independent set (a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices). The dichromatic number of a digraph $D$, denoted by $χ_A(D)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $D$ admits a $k$-coloring of its vertex set in such a way that each color class is acyclic. In 1976, Bondy proved that the chromatic number of a digraph $D$ is at most its circumference, the length of a longest cycle. Given a digraph $D$, we will construct three different graphs whose chromatic numbers bound $χ_A(D)$. Moreover, we prove: i) for integers $k\geq 2$, $s\geq 1$ and $r_1, \ldots, r_s$ with $k\geq r_i\geq 0$ and $r_i\neq 1$ for each $i\in[s]$, that if all cycles in $D$ have length $r$ modulo $k$ for some $r\in\{r_1,\ldots,r_s\}$, then $χ_A(D)\leq 2s+1$; ii) if $D$ has girth $g$ and there are integers $k$ and $p$, with $k\geq g-1\geq p\geq 1$ such that $D$ contains no cycle of length $r$ modulo $\lceil \frac{k}{p} \rceil p$ for each $r\in \{-p+2,\ldots,0,\ldots,p\}$, then $χ_A (D)\leq \lceil \frac{k}{p} \rceil$; iii) if $D$ has girth $g$, the length of a shortest cycle, and circumference $c$, then $χ_A(D)\leq \lceil \frac{c-1}{g-1} \rceil +1$, which improves, substantially, the bound proposed by Bondy. Our results show that if we have more information about the lengths of cycles in a digraph, then we can improve the bounds for the dichromatic number known until now.
Ordered Size Ramsey Number of Paths
Published • View Publication • BIB
An ordered graph is a simple graph with an ordering on its vertices. Define the ordered path $P_n$ to be the monotone increasing path with $n$ edges. The ordered size Ramsey number $\tilde{r}(P_r,P_s)$ is the minimum number $m$ for which there exists an ordered graph $H$ with $m$ edges such that every two-coloring of the edges of $H$ contains a red copy of $P_r$ or a blue copy of $P_s$. For $2\leq r\leq s$, we show $\frac{1}{8}r^2s\leq \tilde{r}(P_r,P_s)\leq Cr^2s(\log s)^3$, where $C>0$ is an absolute constant. This problem is motivated by the recent results of Bucić-Letzter-Sudakov and Letzter-Sudakov for oriented graphs.

On the roots of the subtree polynomial
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a tree $T$, the subtree polynomial of $T$ is the generating polynomial for the number of subtrees of $T$. We show that the complex roots of the subtree polynomial are contained in the disk $\left\{z\in\mathbb{C}\colon\ |z|\leq 1+\sqrt[3]{3}\right\}$, and that $K_{1,3}$ is the only tree whose subtree polynomial has a root on the boundary. We also prove that the closure of the collection of all real roots of subtree polynomials contains the interval $[-2,-1]$, while the intervals $(\infty,-1-\sqrt[3]{3})$, $[-1,0)$, and $(0,\infty)$ are root-free.
Stability of the potential function

A graphic sequence $π$ is potentially $H$-graphic if there is some realization of $π$ that contains $H$ as a subgraph. The Erdős-Jacobson-Lehel problem asks to determine $σ(H,n)$, the minimum even integer such that any $n$-term graphic sequence $π$ with sum at least $σ(H,n)$ is potentially $H$-graphic. The parameter $σ(H,n)$ is known as the potential function of $H$, and can be viewed as a degree sequence variant of the classical extremal function ${\rm ex}(n,H)$. Recently, Ferrara, LeSaulnier, Moffatt and Wenger [On the sum necessary to ensure that a degree sequence is potentially $H$-graphic, Combinatorica 36 (2016), 687--702] determined $σ(H,n)$ asymptotically for all $H$, which is analogous to the Erdős-Stone-Simonovits Theorem that determines ${\rm ex}(n,H)$ asymptotically for nonbipartite $H$. In this paper, we investigate a stability concept for the potential number, inspired by Simonovits' classical result on the stability of the extremal function. We first define a notion of stability for the potential number that is a natural analogue to the stability given by Simonovits. However, under this definition, many families of graphs are not $σ$-stable, establishing a stark contrast between the extremal and potential functions. We then give a sufficient condition for a graph $H$ to be stable with respect to the potential function, and characterize the stability of those graphs $H$ that contain an induced subgraph of order $α(H)+1$ with exactly one edge.

Rainbow triangles in arc-colored digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $D$ be an arc-colored digraph. The arc number $a(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of arcs of $D$. The color number $c(D)$ of $D$ is defined as the number of colors assigned to the arcs of $D$. A rainbow triangle in $D$ is a directed triangle in which every pair of arcs have distinct colors. Let $f(D)$ be the smallest integer such that if $c(D)\geq f(D)$, then $D$ contains a rainbow triangle. In this paper we obtain $f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$ and $f(T_n)$, where $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ is a complete digraph of order $n$ and $T_n$ is a strongly connected tournament of order $n$. Moreover we characterize the arc-colored complete digraph $\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n}$ with $c(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})=f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})-1$ and containing no rainbow triangles. We also prove that an arc-colored digraph $D$ on $n$ vertices contains a rainbow triangle when $a(D)+c(D)\geq a(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})+f(\overleftrightarrow{K}_{n})$, which is a directed extension of the undirected case.

Independence Equivalence Classes of Paths and Cycles
The independence polynomial of a graph is the generating polynomial for the number of independent sets of each size. Two graphs are said to be \textit{independence equivalent} if they have equivalent independence polynomials. We extend previous work by showing that independence equivalence class of every odd path has size 1, while the class can contain arbitrarily many graphs for even paths. We also prove that the independence equivalence class of every even cycle consists of two graphs when $n\ge 2$ except the independence equivalence class of $C_6$ which consists of three graphs. The odd case remains open, although, using irreducibility results from algebra, we were able show that for a prime $p \geq 5$ and $n\ge 1$ the independence equivalence class of $C_{p^n}$ consists of only two graphs.

Rainbow matchings of size $m$ in graphs with total color degree at least $2mn$
Published • View Publication • BIB
The existence of a rainbow matching given a minimum color degree, proper coloring, or triangle-free host graph has been studied extensively. This paper, generalizes these problems to edge colored graphs with given total color degree. In particular, we find that if a graph $G$ has total color degree $2mn$ and satisfies some other properties, then $G$ contains a matching of size $m$; These other properties include $G$ being triangle-free, $C_4$-free, properly colored, or large enough.
Zeros of the Möbius function of permutations
Published in Mathematika 65 (2019) 1074-1092 • View Publication • BIB
We show that if a permutation $π$ contains two intervals of length 2, where one interval is an ascent and the other a descent, then the Möbius function $μ[π]$ of the interval $[1,π]$ is zero. As a consequence, we show that the proportion of permutations of length $n$ with principal Möbius function equal to zero is asymptotically bounded below by $(1-1/e)^2\ge 0.3995$. This is the first result determining the value of $μ[1,π]$ for an asymptotically positive proportion of permutations $π$. We also show that if a permutation $φ$ can be expressed as a direct sum of the form $α\oplus 1 \oplus β$, then any permutation $π$ containing an interval order-isomorphic to $φ$ has $μ[1, π]=0$; we deduce this from a more general result showing that $μ[σ, π]=0$ whenever $π$ contains an interval of a certain form. Finally, we show that if a permutation $π$ contains intervals isomorphic to certain pairs of permutations, or to certain permutations of length six, then $μ[1, π] = 0$.

Uniform Lipschitz functions on the triangular lattice have logarithmic variations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Uniform integer-valued Lipschitz functions on a domain of size $N$ of the triangular lattice are shown to have variations of order $\sqrt{\log N}$. The level lines of such functions form a loop $O(2)$ model on the edges of the hexagonal lattice with edge-weight one. An infinite-volume Gibbs measure for the loop O(2) model is constructed as a thermodynamic limit and is shown to be unique. It contains only finite loops and has properties indicative of scale-invariance: macroscopic loops appearing at every scale. The existence of the infinite-volume measure carries over to height functions pinned at the origin; the uniqueness of the Gibbs measure does not. The proof is based on a representation of the loop $O(2)$ model via a pair of spin configurations that are shown to satisfy the FKG inequality. We prove RSW-type estimates for a certain connectivity notion in the aforementioned spin model.

Rainbow triangles and cliques in edge-colored graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
For an edge-colored graph, a subgraph is called rainbow if all its edges have distinct colors. We show that if $G$ is an edge-colored graph of order $n$ and size $m$ using $c$ colors on its edges, and $m+c\geq \binom{n+1}{2}+k-1$ for a non-negative integer $k$, then $G$ contains at least $k$ rainbow triangles. For $n\geq 3k$, we show that this result is best possible, and we completely characterize the class of edge-colored graphs for which this result is sharp. Furthermore, we show that an edge-colored graph $G$ contains at least $k$ rainbow triangles if $\sum\limits_{v\in V(G)} d^c_G(v)\geq \binom{n+1}{2}+k-1$ where $d_G^c(v)$ denotes the number of distinct colors incident to a vertex $v$. Finally we characterize the edge-colored graphs without a rainbow clique of size at least six that maximize the sum of edges and colors $m+c$. Our results answer two questions of Fujita, Ning, Xu and Zhang [On sufficient conditions for rainbow cycles in edge-colored graph, arXiv:1705.03675, 2017]

Maximizing Cliques in Shellable Clique Complexes
In extremal graph theory, the problem of finding the elements of a given class of graphs which contain the most cliques traces its routes back to Turán's famous theorem. We consider the implications of the connectivity property of simplicial complexes known as shellability on clique complexes associated with graphs. In this paper, we find the graphs which maximize cliques among all graphs on $n$ vertices with $Δ(G)\leq r$ that have shellable clique complexes.
