Extensions on spectral extrema of $C_5/C_6$-free graphs with given size
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{F}$ denote a set of graphs. A graph $G$ is said to be $\mathcal{F}$-free if it does not contain any element of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. The Turán number is the maximum possible number of edges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph with $n$ vertices. It is well known that classical Turán type extremal problem aims to study the Turán number of fixed graphs. In 2010, Nikiforov \cite{Nik2} proposed analogously a spectral Turán type problem which asks to determine the maximum spectral radius of an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph with $n$ vertices. It attracts much attention and many such problems remained elusive open even after serious attempts, and so they are considered as one of the most intriguing problems in spectral extremal graph theory. It is interesting to consider another spectral Turán type problem which asks to determine the maximum spectral radius of an $\mathcal{F}$-free graph with $m$ edges. Denote by $\mathcal{G}(m,\mathcal{F})$ the set of $\mathcal{F}$-free graphs with $m$ edges having no isolated vertices. Each of the graphs among $\mathcal{G}(m,\mathcal{F})$ having the largest spectral radius is called a maximal graph. Let $θ_{p,q,r}$ be a theta graph formed by connecting two distinct vertices with three independent paths of length $p,q$ and $r,$ respectively (length refers to the number of edges). In this paper, we firstly determine the unique maximal graph among $\mathcal{G}(m,θ_{1,2,3})$ and $\mathcal{G}(m,θ_{1,2,4}),$ respectively. Then we determine all the maximal graphs among $\mathcal{G}(m,C_5)$ (resp. $\mathcal{G}(m,C_6)$) excluding the book graph. These results extend some earlier results.

Common graphs with arbitrary chromatic number
Ramsey's Theorem guarantees for every graph H that any 2-edge-coloring of a sufficiently large complete graph contains a monochromatic copy of H. In 1962, Erdos conjectured that the random 2-edge-coloring minimizes the number of monochromatic copies of K_k, and the conjecture was extended by Burr and Rosta to all graphs. In the late 1980s, the conjectures were disproved by Thomason and Sidorenko, respectively. A classification of graphs whose number of monochromatic copies is minimized by the random 2-edge-coloring, which are referred to as common graphs, remains a challenging open problem. If Sidorenko's Conjecture, one of the most significant open problems in extremal graph theory, is true, then every 2-chromatic graph is common, and in fact, no 2-chromatic common graph unsettled for Sidorenko's Conjecture is known. While examples of 3-chromatic common graphs were known for a long time, the existence of a 4-chromatic common graph was open until 2012, and no common graph with a larger chromatic number is known. We construct connected k-chromatic common graphs for every k. This answers a question posed by Hatami, Hladky, Kral, Norine and Razborov [Combin. Probab. Comput. 21 (2012), 734-742], and a problem listed by Conlon, Fox and Sudakov [London Math. Soc. Lecture Note Ser. 424 (2015), 49-118, Problem 2.28]. This also answers in a stronger form the question raised by Jagger, Stovicek and Thomason [Combinatorica 16, (1996), 123-131] whether there exists a common graph with chromatic number at least four.

Two conjectures in spectral graph theory involving the linear combinations of graph eigenvalues
We prove two conjectures in spectral extremal graph theory involving the linear combinations of graph eigenvalues. Let $λ_1(G)$ be the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph $G$, and $\bar{G}$ be the complement of $G$. A nice conjecture states that the graph on $n$ vertices maximizing $λ_1(G) + λ_1(\bar{G})$ is the join of a clique and an independent set, with $\lfloor n/3\rfloor$ and $\lceil 2n/3\rceil$ (also $\lceil n/3\rceil$ and $\lfloor 2n/3\rfloor$ if $n \equiv 2 \pmod{3}$) vertices, respectively. We resolve this conjecture for sufficiently large $n$ using analytic methods. Our second result concerns the $Q$-spread $s_Q(G)$ of a graph $G$, which is defined as the difference between the largest eigenvalue and least eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of $G$. It was conjectured by Cvetković, Rowlinson and Simić in $2007$ that the unique $n$-vertex connected graph of maximum $Q$-spread is the graph formed by adding a pendant edge to $K_{n-1}$. We confirm this conjecture for sufficiently large $n$.

On the number of maximal independent sets: From Moon-Moser to Hujter-Tuza
Published • View PublicationBIB
We connect two classical results in extremal graph theory concerning the number of maximal independent sets. The maximum number mis$(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex graph was determined by Moon and Moser. The maximum number mis$_\bigtriangleup(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex triangle-free graph was determined by Hujter and Tuza. We determine the maximum number mis$_t(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex graph containing no induced triangle matching of size $t+1$. We also reprove a stability result of Kahn and Park on the maximum number mis$_{\bigtriangleup,t}(n)$ of maximal independent sets in an $n$-vertex triangle-free graphs containing no induced matching of size $t+1$.

Information Inequalities via Submodularity and a Problem in Extremal Graph Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
The present paper offers, in its first part, a unified approach for the derivation of families of inequalities for set functions which satisfy sub/supermodularity properties. It applies this approach for the derivation of information inequalities with Shannon information measures. Connections of the considered approach to a generalized version of Shearer's lemma, and other related results in the literature are considered. Some of the derived information inequalities are new, and also known results (such as a generalized version of Han's inequality) are reproduced in a simple and unified way. In its second part, this paper applies the generalized Han's inequality to analyze a problem in extremal graph theory. This problem is motivated and analyzed from the perspective of information theory, and the analysis leads to generalized and refined bounds. The two parts of this paper are meant to be independently accessible to the reader.
Disjoint isomorphic balanced clique subdivisions
A thoroughly studied problem in Extremal Graph Theory is to find the best possible density condition in a host graph $G$ for guaranteeing the presence of a particular subgraph $H$ in $G$. One such classical result, due to Bollobás and Thomason, and independently Komlós and Szemerédi, states that average degree $O(k^2)$ guarantees the existence of a $K_k$-subdivision. We study two directions extending this result. On the one hand, Verstraëte conjectured that the quadratic bound $O(k^2)$ would guarantee already two vertex-disjoint isomorphic copies of a $K_k$-subdivision. On the other hand, Thomassen conjectured that for each $k \in \mathbb{N}$ there is some $d = d(k)$ such that every graph with average degree at least $d$ contains a balanced subdivision of $K_k$, that is, a copy of $K_k$ where the edges are replaced by paths of equal length. Recently, Liu and Montgomery confirmed Thomassen's conjecture, but the optimal bound on $d(k)$ remains open. In this paper, we show that the quadratic bound $O(k^2)$ suffices to force a balanced $K_k$-subdivision. This gives the optimal bound on $d(k)$ needed in Thomassen's conjecture and implies the existence of $O(1)$ many vertex-disjoint isomorphic $K_k$-subdivisions, confirming Verstraëte's conjecture in a strong sense.
Algorithms for the ferromagnetic Potts model on expanders
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 33 (2024) 487-517 • View PublicationBIB
We give algorithms for approximating the partition function of the ferromagnetic $q$-color Potts model on graphs of maximum degree $d$. Our primary contribution is a fully polynomial-time approximation scheme for $d$-regular graphs with an expansion condition at low temperatures (that is, bounded away from the order-disorder threshold). The expansion condition is much weaker than in previous works; for example, the expansion exhibited by the hypercube suffices. The main improvements come from a significantly sharper analysis of standard polymer models; we use extremal graph theory and applications of Karger's algorithm to count cuts that may be of independent interest. It is \#BIS-hard to approximate the partition function at low temperatures on bounded-degree graphs, so our algorithm can be seen as evidence that hard instances of \#BIS are rare. We also obtain efficient algorithms in the Gibbs uniqueness region for bounded-degree graphs. While our high temperature proof follows more standard polymer model analysis, our result holds in the largest known range of parameters $d$ and $q$.

New proofs of stability theorems on spectral graph problems
Both the Simonovits stability theorem and the Nikiforov spectral stability theorem are powerful tools for solving exact values of Turán numbers in extremal graph theory. Recently, Füredi [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 115 (2015)] provided a concise and contemporary proof of the Simonovits stability theorem. In this note, we present a unified treatment for some extremal graph problems, including short proofs of Nikiforov's spectral stability theorem and the clique stability theorem proved recently by Ma and Qiu [European J. Combin. 84 (2020)]. Moreover, some spectral extremal problems related to the $p$-spectral radius and signless Laplacian radius are also included.
Structured Codes of Graphs

We investigate the maximum size of graph families on a common vertex set of cardinality $n$ such that the symmetric difference of the edge sets of any two members of the family satisfies some prescribed condition. We solve the problem completely for infinitely many values of $n$ when the prescribed condition is connectivity or $2$-connectivity, Hamiltonicity or the containment of a spanning star. We also investigate local conditions that can be certified by looking at only a subset of the vertex set. In these cases a capacity-type asymptotic invariant is defined and when the condition is to contain a certain subgraph this invariant is shown to be a simple function of the chromatic number of this required subgraph. This is proven using classical results from extremal graph theory. Several variants are considered and the paper ends with a collection of open problems.

Bounds On The Inducibility Of Double Loop Graphs
In the area of extremal graph theory, there exists a problem that investigates the maximum induced density of a $k$-vertex graph $H$ in any $n$-vertex graph $G$. This is known as the problem of \emph{inducibility} that was first introduced by Pippenger and Golumbic in 1975. In this paper, we give a new upper bound for the inducibility for a family of \emph{Double Loop Graphs} of order $k$. The upper bound obtained for order $k=5$ is within a factor of 0.964506 of the exact inducibility, and the upper bound obtained for $k=6$ is within a factor of 3 of the best known lower bound.

Eigenvalues of signed graphs
Signed graphs have their edges labeled either as positive or negative. $ρ(M)$ denote the $M$-spectral radius of $Σ$, where $M=M(Σ)$ is a real symmetric graph matrix of $Σ$. Obviously, $ρ(M)=\mbox{max}\{λ_1(M),-λ_n(M)\}$. Let $A(Σ)$ be the adjacency matrix of $Σ$ and $(K_n,H^-)$ be a signed complete graph whose negative edges induce a subgraph $H$. In this paper, we first focus on a central problem in spectral extremal graph theory as follows: Which signed graph with maximum $ρ(A(Σ))$ among $(K_n,T^-)$ where $T$ is a spanning tree? To answer the problem, we characterize the extremal signed graph with maximum $λ_1(A(Σ))$ and minimum $λ_n(A(Σ))$ among $(K_n,T^-)$, respectively. Another interesting graph matrix of a signed graph is distance matrix, i.e. $D(Σ)$ which was defined by Hameed, Shijin, Soorya, Germina and Zaslavsky [8]. Note that $A(Σ)=D(Σ)$ when $Σ\in (K_n,T^-)$. In this paper, we give upper bounds on the least distance eigenvalue of a signed graph $Σ$ with diameter at least 2. This result implies a result proved by Lin [11] was originally conjectured by Aouchiche and Hansen [1].

On extremal numbers of the triangle plus the four-cycle
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a family $\mathcal{F}$ of graphs, let $ex(n,\mathcal{F})$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which contains none of the members of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph. A longstanding problem in extremal graph theory asks to determine the function $ex(n,\{C_3,C_4\})$. Here we give a new construction for dense graphs of girth at least five with arbitrary number of vertices, providing the first improvement on the lower bound of $ex(n,\{C_3,C_4\})$ since 1976. As a corollary, this yields a negative answer to a problem in Chung-Graham [3].

A polynomial resultant approach to algebraic constructions of extremal graphs
Published in SCIENCE CHINA Mathematics, 2024+ • View PublicationBIB
The Turán problem asks for the largest number of edges ex$(n,H)$ in an $n$-vertex graph not containing a fixed forbidden subgraph $H$, which is one of the most important problems in extremal graph theory. However the order of magnitude of ex$(n,H)$ for bipartite graphs is known only in a handful of cases. In particular, giving explicit constructions of extremal graphs is very challenging in this field. In this paper, we develop a polynomail resultant approach to algebraic construction of explicit extremal graphs, which can efficiently decide whether a specified structure exists. A key insight in our approach is the multipolynomial resultant, which is a fundamental tool of computational algebraic geometry. Our main results include the matched lowers bounds for Turán number of $1$-subdivision of $K_{3,t_{1}}$ and linear Turán number of Berge theta hyerpgraph $Θ_{3,t_{2}}^{B}$ with $t_{1}=25$ and $t_{2}=217$. Moreover, the constant $t_{1}$ improves the random algebraic construction of Bukh and Conlon~[Rational exponents in extremal graph theory, J. Eur. Math. Soc. 20 (2018), 1747-1757] and makes progress on the known estimation for the smallest value of $t_{1}$ concerning a problem posed by Conlon, Janzer and Lee ~[More on the extremal number of subdivisions, Combinatorica, to appear], while the constant $t_{2}$ improves a result of He and Tait~[Hypergraphs with few berge paths of fixed length between vertices, SIAM J. Discrete Math., 33(3), 1472-1481].

The saturation number of $C_6$
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is called $C_k$-saturated if $G$ is $C_k$-free but $G+e$ not for any $e\in E(\overline{G})$. The saturation number of $C_k$, denoted $sat(n,C_k)$, is the minimum number of edges in a $C_k$-saturated graph on $n$ vertices. Finding the exact values of $sat(n,C_k)$ has been one of the most intriguing open problems in extremal graph theory. In this paper, we study the saturation number of $C_6$. We prove that ${4n}/{3}-2 \le sat(n,C_6) \le {(4n+1)}/{3}$ for $n\ge9$, which significantly improves the existing lower and upper bounds for $sat(n,C_6)$.

Spectral extrema of $K_{s,t}$-minor free graphs--On a conjecture of M. Tait
Published • View PublicationBIB
Minors play an important role in extremal graph theory and spectral extremal graph theory. Tait [The Colin de Verdière parameter, excluded minors, and the spectral radius, J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 166 (2019) 42--58] determined the maximum spectral radius and characterized the unique extremal graph for $K_r$-minor free graphs of sufficiently large order $n$, he also made great progress on $K_{s,t}$-minor free graphs and posed a conjecture: Let $2\leq s\leq t$ and $n-s+1=pt+q$, where $n$ is sufficiently large and $1\leq q\leq t.$ Then $K_{s-1}\nabla (pK_t\cup K_q)$ is the unique extremal graph with the maximum spectral radius over all $n$-vertex $K_{s,t}$-minor free graphs. In this paper, Tait's conjecture is completely solved. We also determine the maximum spectral radius and its extremal graphs for $n$-vertex $K_{1,t}$-minor free graphs. To prove our results, some spectral and structural tools, such as, local edge maximality, local degree sequence majorization, double eigenvectors transformation, are used to deduce structural properties of extremal graphs.

Homomorphism counts in robustly sparse graphs
For a fixed graph $H$ and for arbitrarily large host graphs $G$, the number of homomorphisms from $H$ to $G$ and the number of subgraphs isomorphic to $H$ contained in $G$ have been extensively studied in extremal graph theory and graph limits theory when the host graphs are allowed to be dense. This paper addresses the case when the host graphs are robustly sparse and proves a general theorem that solves a number of open questions proposed since 1990s and strengthens a number of results in the literature. We prove that for any graph $H$ and any set ${\mathcal H}$ of homomorphisms from $H$ to members of a hereditary class ${\mathcal G}$ of graphs, if ${\mathcal H}$ satisfies a natural and mild condition, and contracting disjoint subgraphs of radius $O(\lvert V(H) \rvert)$ in members of ${\mathcal G}$ cannot create a graph with large edge-density, then an obvious lower bound for the size of ${\mathcal H}$ gives a good estimation for the size of ${\mathcal H}$. This result determines the maximum number of $H$-homomorphisms, the maximum number of $H$-subgraphs, and the maximum number $H$-induced subgraphs in graphs in any hereditary class with bounded expansion up to a constant factor; it also determines the exact value of the asymptotic logarithmic density for $H$-homomorphisms, $H$-subgraphs and $H$-induced subgraphs in graphs in any hereditary nowhere dense class. Hereditary classes with bounded expansion include (topological) minor-closed families and many classes of graphs with certain geometric properties; nowhere dense classes are the most general sparse classes in sparsity theory. Our machinery also allows us to determine the maximum number of $H$-subgraphs in the class of all $d$-degenerate graphs with any fixed $d$.

On the maximum number of maximum dissociation sets in trees with given dissociation number
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a graph $G$, a subset of vertices is a dissociation set if it induces a subgraph with vertex degree at most 1. A maximum dissociation set is a dissociation set of maximum cardinality. The dissociation number of $G$, denoted by $ψ(G)$, is the cardinality of a maximum dissociation set of $G$. Extremal problems involving counting the number of a given type of substructure in a graph have been a hot topic of study in extremal graph theory throughout the last few decades. In this paper, we determine the maximum number of maximum dissociation sets in a tree with prescribed dissociation number and the extremal trees achieving this maximum value.

Making an $H$-Free Graph $k$-Colorable
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the following question: how few edges can we delete from any $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices in order to make the resulting graph $k$-colorable? It turns out that various classical problems in extremal graph theory are special cases of this question. For $H$ any fixed odd cycle, we determine the answer up to a constant factor when $n$ is sufficiently large. We also prove an upper bound when $H$ is a fixed clique that we conjecture is tight up to a constant factor, and prove upper bounds for more general families of graphs. We apply our results to get a new bound on the maximum cut of graphs with a forbidden odd cycle in terms of the number of edges.

Towards characterizing locally common graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph H is common if the number of monochromatic copies of H in a 2-edge-coloring of the complete graph is asymptotically minimized by the random coloring. The classification of common graphs is one of the most intriguing problems in extremal graph theory. We study the notion of weakly locally common graphs considered by Csóka, Hubai and Lovász [arXiv:1912.02926], where the graph is required to be the minimizer with respect to perturbations of the random 2-edge-coloring. We give a complete analysis of the 12 initial terms in the Taylor series determining the number of monochromatic copies of H in such perturbations and classify graphs H based on this analysis into three categories: graphs of Class I are weakly locally common, graphs of Class II are not weakly locally common, and graphs of Class III cannot be determined to be weakly locally common or not based on the initial 12 terms. As a corollary, we obtain new necessary conditions on a graph to be common and new sufficient conditions on a graph to be not common.

Problems and results in Extremal Combinatorics -- IV
Extremal Combinatorics is among the most active topics in Discrete Mathematics, dealing with problems that are often motivated by questions in other areas, including Theoretical Computer Science and Information Theory. This paper contains a collection of problems and results in the area, including solutions or partial solutions to open problems suggested by various researchers. The topics considered here include questions in Extremal Graph Theory, Coding Theory and Social Choice. This is by no means a comprehensive survey of the area, and is merely a collection of problems, results and proofs, which are hopefully interesting. As the title of the paper suggests, this is a sequel of three previous papers of the same flavour. Each section of this paper is essentially self contained, and can be read separately.
