On the automorphism groups of distance-regular graphs and rank-4 primitive coherent configurations
The minimal degree of a permutation group $G$ is the minimum number of points not fixed by non-identity elements of $G$. Lower bounds on the minimal degree have strong structural consequences on $G$. In 2014 Babai proved that the automorphism group of a strongly regular graph with $n$ vertices has minimal degree $\geq c n$, with known exceptions. Strongly regular graphs correspond to primitive coherent configurations of rank 3. We extend Babai's result to primitive coherent configurations of rank 4. We also show that the result extends to non-geometric distance-regular graphs of bounded diameter. The proofs combine structural and spectral methods.
The critical exponent: a novel graph invariant
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 78B (2017), Article #62 • Search Publication
A surprising result of FitzGerald and Horn (1977) shows that $A^{\circ α} := (a_{ij}^α)$ is positive semidefinite (p.s.d.) for every entrywise nonnegative $n \times n$ p.s.d. matrix $A = (a_{ij})$ if and only if $α$ is a positive integer or $α\geq n-2$. Given a graph $G$, we consider the refined problem of characterizing the set $\mathcal{H}_G$ of entrywise powers preserving positivity for matrices with a zero pattern encoded by $G$. Using algebraic and combinatorial methods, we study how the geometry of $G$ influences the set $\mathcal{H}_G$. Our treatment provides new and exciting connections between combinatorics and analysis, and leads us to introduce and compute a new graph invariant called the critical exponent.

Characterization of generalized Petersen graphs that are Kronecker covers
Published in dmtcs:4592 - Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, November 11, 2019, vol. 21 no. 4 • View Publication • BIB
The family of generalized Petersen graphs $G(n, k)$, introduced by Coxeter et al. [4] and named by Mark Watkins (1969), is a family of cubic graphs formed by connecting the vertices of a regular polygon to the corresponding vertices of a star polygon. The Kronecker cover $\mathrm{KC}(G)$ of a simple undirected graph $G$ is a a special type of bipartite covering graph of $G$, isomorphic to the direct (tensor) product of $G$ and $K_2$. We characterize all the members of generalized Petersen graphs that are Kronecker covers, and describe the structure of their respective quotients. We observe that some of such quotients are again generalized Petersen graphs, and describe all such pairs.
Cubic graphs, their Ehrhart quasi-polynomials, and a scissors congruence phenomenon
Published • View Publication • BIB
The scissors congruence conjecture for the unimodular group is an analogue of Hilbert's third problem, for the equidecomposability of polytopes. Liu and Osserman studied the Ehrhart quasi-polynomials of polytopes naturally associated to graphs whose vertices have degree one or three. In this paper, we prove the scissors congruence conjecture, posed by Haase and McAllister, for this class of polytopes. The key ingredient in the proofs is the nearest neighbor interchange on graphs and a naturally arising piecewise unimodular transformation.

Crystal graphs for shifted tableaux
We define crystal operators on semistandard shifted tableaux, giving a new proof that Schur $P$-functions are Schur positive. We define a queer crystal operator to construct a connected queer crystal on semistandard shifted tableaux of a given shape, providing a new proof that products of Schur $P$-functions are Schur $P$-positive. We also give a rectification map from shifted tableaux to Young tableaux that commutes with the crystal operators and provides a dual algorithm to shifted insertion.

Multicolor Gallai-Ramsey numbers of $C_9$ and $C_{11}$
A Gallai coloring is a coloring of the edges of a complete graph without rainbow triangles, and a Gallai $k$-coloring is a Gallai coloring that uses $k$ colors. We study Ramsey-type problems in Gallai colorings. Given an integer $k\ge1$ and a graph $H$, the Gallai-Ramsey number $GR_k(H)$ is the least positive integer $n$ such that every Gallai $k$-coloring of the complete graph on $n$ vertices contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. It turns out that $GR_k(H)$ is more well-behaved than the classical Ramsey number $R_k(H)$. However, finding exact values of $GR_k (H)$ is far from trivial. In this paper, we study Gallai-Ramsey numbers of odd cycles. We prove that for $n\in\{4,5\}$ and all $k\ge1$, $GR_k(C_{2n+1})= n\cdot 2^k+1$. This new result provides partial evidence for the first two open cases of the Triple Odd Cycle Conjecture of Bondy and Erdős from 1973. Our technique relies heavily on the structural result of Gallai on Gallai colorings of complete graphs. We believe the method we developed can be used to determine the exact values of $GR_k(C_{2n+1})$ for all $n\ge6$.

Reconfiguration of Colorable Sets in Classes of Perfect Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A set of vertices in a graph is c-colorable if the subgraph induced by the set has a proper c-coloring. In this paper, we study the problem of finding a step-by-step transformation (reconfiguration) between two c-colorable sets in the same graph. This problem generalizes the well-studied Independent Set Reconfiguration problem. As the first step toward a systematic understanding of the complexity of this general problem, we study the problem on classes of perfect graphs. We first focus on interval graphs and give a combinatorial characterization of the distance between two c-colorable sets. This gives a linear-time algorithm for finding an actual shortest reconfiguration sequence for interval graphs. Since interval graphs are exactly the graphs that are simultaneously chordal and co-comparability, we then complement the positive result by showing that even deciding reachability is PSPACE-complete for chordal graphs and for co-comparability graphs. The hardness for chordal graphs holds even for split graphs. We also consider the case where c is a fixed constant and show that in such a case the reachability problem is polynomial-time solvable for split graphs but still PSPACE-complete for co-comparability graphs. The complexity of this case for chordal graphs remains unsettled. As by-products, our positive results give the first polynomial-time solvable cases (split graphs and interval graphs) for Feedback Vertex Set Reconfiguration.
$PI$-eigenfunctions of the Star graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the symmetric group $\mathrm{Sym}_n,\,n\geqslant 2$, generated by the set $S$ of transpositions $(1~i),\,2 \leqslant i \leqslant n$, and the Cayley graph $S_n=Cay(\mathrm{Sym}_n,S)$ called the Star graph. For any positive integers $n\geqslant 3$ and $m$ with $n > 2m$, we present a family of $PI$-eigenfunctions of $S_n$ with eigenvalue $n-m-1$. We establish a connection of these functions with the standard basis of a Specht module. In the case of largest non-principal eigenvalue $n-2$ we prove that any eigenfunction of $S_n$ can be reconstructed by its values on the second neighbourhood of a vertex.

Further results on random cubic planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide precise asymptotic estimates for the number of several classes of labelled cubic planar graphs, and we analyze properties of such random graphs under the uniform distribution. This model was first analyzed by Bodirsky et al. (Random Structures Algorithms 2007). We revisit their work and obtain new results on the enumeration of cubic planar graphs and on random cubic planar graphs. In particular, we determine the exact probability of a random cubic planar graph being connected, and we show that the distribution of the number of triangles in random cubic planar graphs is asymptotically normal with linear expectation and variance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time one is able to determine the asymptotic distribution for the number of copies of a fixed graph containing a cycle in classes of random planar graphs arising from planar maps.

Resolving Two Conjectures on Staircase Encodings and Boundary Grids of $132$ and $123$-avoiding permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper analyzes relations between pattern avoidance of certain permutations and graphs on staircase grids and boundary grids, and proves two conjectures posed by Bean, Tannock, and Ulfarsson (2015). More specifically, this paper enumerates a certain family of staircase encodings and proves that the downcore graph, a certain graph established on the boundary grid, is pure if and only if the permutation corresponding to the boundary grid avoids the classical patterns 123 and 2143.

Sums, products and ratios along the edges of a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
In their seminal paper Erdős and Szemerédi formulated conjectures on the size of sumset and product set of integers. The strongest form of their conjecture is about sums and products along the edges of a graph. In this paper we show that this strong form of the Erdős-Szemerédi conjecture does not hold. We give upper and lower bounds on the cardinalities of sumsets, product sets and ratio sets along the edges of graphs.

Embedding distance graphs in finite field vector spaces
We show that large subsets of vector spaces over finite fields determine certain point configurations with prescribed distance structure. More specifically, we consider the complete graph with vertices as the points of $A \subseteq \mathbf{F}_q^d$ and edges assigned the algebraic distance between pairs of vertices. We prove nontrivial results on locating specified subgraphs of maximum vertex degree at most $t$ in dimensions $d \geq 2t$.

Unimodality of the independence polynomials of non-regular caterpillars
The independence polynomial $I(G, x)$ of a graph $G$ is the polynomial in variable $x$ in which the coefficient $a_n$ on $x^n$ gives the number of independent subsets $S \subseteq V(G)$ of vertices of $G$ such that $|S| = n$. $I(G, x)$ is unimodal if there is an index $μ$ such that that $a_0 \leq a_1 \leq$...$\leq a_{μ-1} \leq a_μ \geq a_{μ+1} \geq$...$\geq a_{d-1} \geq a_d$ While the independence polynomials of many families of graphs with highly regular structure are known to be unimodal, little is known about less regularly structured graphs. We analyze the independence polynomials of a large infinite family of trees without regular structure and show that these polynomials are unimodal through a combinatorial analysis of the polynomials coefficients.

Counting linear extensions of restricted posets
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical 1991 result by Brightwell and Winkler states that the number of linear extensions of a poset is #P-complete. We extend this result to posets with certain restrictions. First, we prove that the number of linear extension for posets of height two is #P-complete. Furthermore, we prove that this holds for incidence posets of graphs. Finally, we prove that the number of linear extensions for posets of dimension two is #P-complete.

Homotopy type of Neighborhood Complexes of Kneser graphs, $KG_{2,k}$
Published in Proceedings-Mathematical Sciences 128.5 (2018): 53 • View Publication • BIB
Schrijver identified a family of vertex critical subgraphs of the Kneser graphs called the stable Kneser graphs $SG_{n,k}$. Björner and de Longueville proved that the neighborhood complex of the stable Kneser graph $SG_{n,k}$ is homotopy equivalent to a $k-$sphere. In this article, we prove that the homotopy type of the neighborhood complex of the Kneser graph $KG_{2,k}$ is a wedge of $(k+4)(k+1)+1$ spheres of dimension $k$. We construct a maximal subgraph $S_{2,k}$ of $KG_{2,k}$, whose neighborhood complex is homotopy equivalent to the neighborhood complex of $SG_{2,k}$. Further, we prove that the neighborhood complex of $S_{2,k}$ deformation retracts onto the neighborhood complex of $SG_{2,k}$.
On the maximal number of real embeddings of spatial minimally rigid graphs
Published in ISSAC '18: Proceedings of the 2018 ACM International Symposium on Symbolic and Algebraic Computation • View Publication • BIB
The number of embeddings of minimally rigid graphs in $\mathbb{R}^D$ is (by definition) finite, modulo rigid transformations, for every generic choice of edge lengths. Even though various approaches have been proposed to compute it, the gap between upper and lower bounds is still enormous. Specific values and its asymptotic behavior are major and fascinating open problems in rigidity theory. Our work considers the maximal number of real embeddings of minimally rigid graphs in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We modify a commonly used parametric semi-algebraic formulation that exploits the Cayley-Menger determinant to minimize the {\em a priori} number of complex embeddings, where the parameters correspond to edge lengths. To cope with the huge dimension of the parameter space and find specializations of the parameters that maximize the number of real embeddings, we introduce a method based on coupler curves that makes the sampling feasible for spatial minimally rigid graphs. Our methodology results in the first full classification of the number of real embeddings of graphs with 7 vertices in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which was the smallest open case. Building on this and certain 8-vertex graphs, we improve the previously known general lower bound on the maximum number of real embeddings in $\mathbb{R}^3$.
Weak Dynamic Coloring of Planar Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The \textit{$k$-weak-dynamic number} of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of colors we need to color the vertices of $G$ in such a way that each vertex $v$ of degree $d(v)$ sees at least $\rm{min}\{k,d(v)\}$ colors on its neighborhood. We use reducible configurations and list coloring of graphs to prove that all planar graphs have 3-weak-dynamic number at most 6.
