On the Edit Distance of Powers of Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
The edit distance between two graphs on the same labeled vertex set is defined to be the size of the symmetric difference of the edge sets. The edit distance function of a hereditary property $\mathcal{H}$ is a function of $p\in [0,1]$ that measures, in the limit, the maximum normalized edit distance between a graph of density $p$ and $\mathcal{H}$. In this paper, we address the edit distance function for $\mbox{Forb}(H)$, where $H=C_h^t$, the $t^{\rm th}$ power of the cycle of length $h$. For $h\geq 2t(t+1)+1$ and $h$ not divisible by $t+1$, we determine the function for all values of $p$. For $h\geq 2t(t+1)+1$ and $h$ divisible by $t+1$, the function is obtained for all but small values of $p$. We also obtain some results for smaller values of $h$.

Reconstructing Topological Graphs and Continua
Published • View Publication • BIB
The deck of a topological space $X$ is the set $\mathcal{D}(X)=\{[X \setminus \{x\}] \colon x \in X\}$, where $[Z]$ denotes the homeomorphism class of $Z$. A space $X$ is topologically reconstructible if whenever $\mathcal{D}(X)=\mathcal{D}(Y)$ then $X$ is homeomorphic to $Y$. It is shown that all metrizable compact connected spaces are reconstructible. It follows that all finite graphs, when viewed as a 1-dimensional cell-complex, are reconstructible in the topological sense, and more generally, that all compact graph-like spaces are reconstructible.
A simplicial complex is uniquely determined by its set of discrete Morse functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that a connected simplicial complex is uniquely determined by its complex of discrete Morse functions. This settles a question raised by Chari and Joswig. In the 1-dimensional case, this implies that the complex of rooted forests of a connected graph G completely determines G.

Graph games and the pizza problem
We propose a class of two person perfect information games based on weighted graphs. One of these games can be described in terms of a round pizza which is cut radially into pieces of varying size. The two players alternately take pieces subject to the following rule: Once the first piece has been chosen, all subsequent selections must be adjacent to the hole left by the previously taken pieces. Each player tries to get as much pizza as possible. The original pizza problem was to settle the conjecture that Player One can always get at least half of the pizza. The conjecture turned out to be false. Our main result is a complete solution of a somewhat simpler class of games, concatenations of stacks and two-ended stacks, and we provide a linear time algorithm for this. The algorithm and its output can be described without reference to games. It produces a certain kind of partition of a given finite sequence of real numbers. The conditions on the partition involve alternating sums of various segments of the given sequence. We do not know whether these partitions have applications outside of game theory. The algorithm leads to a quadratic time algorithm which gives the value and an optimal initial move for pizza games. We also provide some general theory concerning the semigroup of equivalence classes of graph games.

The Z-cubes: a hypercube variant with small diameter
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper introduces a new variant of hypercubes, which we call Z-cubes. The n-dimensional Z-cube $H_n$ is obtained from two copies of the (n-1)-dimensional Z-cube $H_{n-1}$ by adding a special perfect matching between the vertices of these two copies of $H_{n-1}$. We prove that the n-dimensional Z-cubes $H_n$ has diameter $(1+o(1))n/\log_2 n$. This greatly improves on the previous known variants of hypercube of dimension n, whose diameters are all larger than n/3. Moreover, any hypercube variant of dimension $n$ is an n-regular graph on $2^n$ vertices, and hence has diameter greater than $n/\log_2 n$. So the Z-cubes are optimal with respect to diameters, up to an error of order $o(n/\log_2n)$. Another type of Z-cubes $Z_{n,k}$ which have similar structure and properties as $H_n$ are also discussed in the last section.

The Hadwiger-Nelson problem over certain fields
We compute the Hadwiger-Nelson numbers $χ(E^2)$ for certain number fields $E$, that is, the smallest number of colors required to color the points in the plane with coordinates in~$E$ so that no two points at distance $1$ from one another have the same color. Specifically, we show that $χ(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2})^2) = 2$, that $χ(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{3})^2) = 3$, that $χ(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{7})^2) = 3$ despite the fact that the graph $Γ(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{7})^2)$ is triangle-free, and that $4 \leq χ(\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{3}, \sqrt{11})^2) \leq 5$. We also discuss some results over other fields, for other quadratic fields. We conclude with some comments on the use of the axiom of choice.

Closed orders and closed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The class of closed graphs by a linear ordering on their sets of vertices is investigated. A recent characterization of such a class of graphs is analyzed by using tools from the proper interval graph theory.

Induced subgraphs of graphs with large chromatic number. IV. Consecutive holes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A hole in a graph is an induced subgraph which is a cycle of length at least four. We prove that for every positive integer k, every triangle-free graph with sufficiently large chromatic number contains holes of k consecutive lengths.

The coefficients of the reduced Bartholdi zeta function
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we establish a new zeta function based on the Bartholdi zeta function for an undirected graph G called the reduced Bartholdi zeta function. We study the relation between its coefficients and the structure of the graph, and demonstrate that the coefficients count the star subgraphs in the symmetric digraph D(G). Moreover, we investigate the properties of semi principle minors extracted from the adjacency matrix of the oriented line graph of G. We also present a general formula for calculating all the coefficients of the reduced Bartholdi zeta function.

Multi-Eulerian tours of directed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Not every graph has an Eulerian tour. But every finite, strongly connected graph has a multi-Eulerian tour, which we define as a closed path that uses each directed edge at least once, and uses edges e and f the same number of times whenever tail(e)=tail(f). This definition leads to a simple generalization of the BEST Theorem. We then show that the minimal length of a multi-Eulerian tour is bounded in terms of the Pham index, a measure of 'Eulerianness'.
There is no strongly regular graph with parameters (460,153,32,60)
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that there is no strongly regular graph (SRG) with parameters (460,153,32,60). The proof is based on a recent lower bound on the number of 4-cliques in a SRG and some applications of Euclidean representation of SRGs.
Decomposing highly edge-connected graphs into paths of any given length
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 2006, Barát and Thomassen posed the following conjecture: for each tree $T$, there exists a natural number $k_T$ such that, if $G$ is a $k_T$-edge-connected graph and $|E(G)|$ is divisible by $|E(T)|$, then $G$ admits a decomposition into copies of $T$. This conjecture was verified for stars, some bistars, paths of length $3$, $5$, and $2^r$ for every positive integer $r$. We prove that this conjecture holds for paths of any fixed length.

Generating maps on surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We describe procedures for generating all 2-cell embedded simple graphs with up to a fixed number of vertices on a given surface. We also modify these procedures to generate closed 2-cell embeddings and polyhedral embeddings. We give results of computer implementations of these procedures for seven surfaces: the sphere, the torus, the double torus, the projective plane, the Klein bottle, the triple cross surface, and the quadruple cross surface.

On the roots of hypergraph chromatic polynomials
Let $G = (V,E)$ be a finite, simple, connected graph with chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$. Sokal \cite{sokal} proved that the roots of the chromatic polynomial of $G$ are bounded in absolute value by $KD$ where, $D$ is the maximum degree of the graph and $7< K < 8$ is a constant. In this paper we generalize this result to uniform hypergraphs. To prove our results we will use the theory of the bounded exponential type graph polynomials.

General Cheeger inequalities for p-Laplacians on graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove Cheeger inequalities for p-Laplacians on finite and infinite weighted graphs. Unlike in previous works, we do not impose boundedness of the vertex degree, nor do we restrict ourselves to the normalized Laplacian and, more generally, we do not impose any boundedness assumption on the geometry. This is achieved by a novel definition of the measure of the boundary which is using the idea of intrinsic metrics. For the non-normalized case, our bounds on the spectral gap of p-Laplacians are already significantly better for finite graphs and for infinite graphs they yield non-trivial bounds even in the case of unbounded vertex degree. We, furthermore, give upper bounds by the Cheeger constant and by the exponential volume growth of distance balls.

Cliques in C_4-free graphs of large minimum degree
A graph $G$ is called $C_4$-free if it does not contain the cycle $C_4$ as an induced subgraph. Hubenko, Solymosi and the first author proved (answering a question of Erd\H os) a peculiar property of $C_4$-free graphs: $C_4$ graphs with $n$ vertices and average degree at least $cn$ contain a complete subgraph (clique) of size at least $c'n$ (with $c'= 0.1c^2n$). We prove here better bounds (${c^2n\over 2+c}$ in general and $(c-1/3)n$ when $ c \le 0.733$) from the stronger assumption that the $C_4$-free graphs have minimum degree at least $cn$. Our main result is a theorem for regular graphs, conjectured in the paper mentioned above: $2k$-regular $C_4$-free graphs on $4k+1$ vertices contain a clique of size $k+1$. This is best possible shown by the $k$-th power of the cycle $C_{4k+1}$.

There is no (75,32,10,16) strongly regular graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that there is no (75,32,10,16) strongly regular graph. The result is obtained by a mix of algebraic and computational approaches. The main idea is to build large enough induced structure and apply the star complement technique. Our result implies that there is no regular two-graph on 76 vertices and no partial geometry with parameters pg(4,7,2). In particular, it implies that there is no (76,35,18,14) strongly-regular graph. In order to solve this classification problem we also develop an efficient algorithm for the problem of finding a maximal clique in a graph.

Large Cross-free sets in Steiner triple systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
A {\em cross-free} set of size $m$ in a Steiner triple system $(V,{\cal{B}})$ is three pairwise disjoint $m$-element subsets $X_1,X_2,X_3\subset V$ such that no $B\in {\cal{B}}$ intersects all the three $X_i$-s. We conjecture that for every admissible $n$ there is an STS$(n)$ with a cross-free set of size $\lfloor{n-3\over 3}\rfloor$ which if true, is best possible. We prove this conjecture for the case $n=18k+3$, constructing an STS$(18k+3)$ containing a cross-free set of size $6k$. We note that some of the $3$-bichromatic STSs, constructed by Colbourn, Dinitz and Rosa, have cross-free sets of size close to $6k$ (but cannot have size exactly $6k$). The constructed STS$(18k+3)$ shows that equality is possible for $n=18k+3$ in the following result: in every $3$-coloring of the blocks of any Steiner triple system STS$(n)$ there is a monochromatic connected component of size at least $\lceil{2n\over 3}\rceil+1$ (we conjecture that equality holds for every admissible $n$). The analogue problem can be asked for $r$-colorings as well, if $r-1 \equiv 1,3 \mbox{ (mod 6)}$ and $r-1$ is a prime power, we show that the answer is the same as in case of complete graphs: in every $r$-coloring of the blocks of any STS$(n)$, there is a monochromatic connected component with at least ${n\over r-1}$ points, and this is sharp for infinitely many $n$.

Ramsey number of a connected triangle matching
Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine the $2$-color Ramsey number of a {\em connected} triangle matching $c(nK_3)$ which is any connected graph containing $n$ vertex disjoint triangles. We obtain that $R(c(nK_3),c(nK_3))=7n-2$, somewhat larger than in the classical result of Burr, Erd\H os and Spencer for a triangle matching, $R(nK_3,nK_3)=5n$. The motivation is to determine the Ramsey number $R(C_n^2,C_n^2)$ of the square of a cycle $C_n^2$. We apply our Ramsey result for connected triangle matchings to show that the Ramsey number of an "almost" square of a cycle $C_n^{2,c}$ (a cycle of length $n$ in which all but at most a constant number $c$ of short diagonals are present) is asymptotic to $7n/3$.

This survey is devoted to problems and results concerning covering the vertices of edge colored graphs or hypergraphs with monochromatic paths, cycles and other objects. It is an expanded version of the talk with the same title at the Seventh Cracow Conference on Graph Theory, held in Rytro in September 14-19, 2014.
