Balanced Abelian group valued functions on directed graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss functions from the edges and vertices of a directed graph to an Abelian group. Such functions, when the sum of their values along any cycle is zero, are called balanced and form an Abelian group. We study this group in two cases: when we allowed to walk against the direction of an edge taking the opposite value of the function and when we are not allowed to walk against the direction.

Regular graphs of odd degree are antimagic
Published in Journal of Graph Theory. Vol. 80(1), September 2015, pp. 28-33 • View Publication • BIB
An antimagic labeling of a graph $G$ with $m$ edges is a bijection from $E(G)$ to $\{1,2,\ldots,m\}$ such that for all vertices $u$ and $v$, the sum of labels on edges incident to $u$ differs from that for edges incident to $v$. Hartsfield and Ringel conjectured that every connected graph other than the single edge $K_2$ has an antimagic labeling. We prove this conjecture for regular graphs of odd degree.
Maximum Edge-Disjoint Paths in $k$-sums of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the approximability of the maximum edge-disjoint paths problem (MEDP) in undirected graphs, and in particular, the integrality gap of the natural multicommodity flow based relaxation for it. The integrality gap is known to be $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ even for planar graphs due to a simple topological obstruction and a major focus, following earlier work, has been understanding the gap if some constant congestion is allowed. In this context, it is natural to ask for which classes of graphs does a constant-factor constant-congestion property hold. It is easy to deduce that for given constant bounds on the approximation and congestion, the class of "nice" graphs is nor-closed. Is the converse true? Does every proper minor-closed family of graphs exhibit a constant factor, constant congestion bound relative to the LP relaxation? We conjecture that the answer is yes. One stumbling block has been that such bounds were not known for bounded treewidth graphs (or even treewidth 3). In this paper we give a polytime algorithm which takes a fractional routing solution in a graph of bounded treewidth and is able to integrally route a constant fraction of the LP solution's value. Note that we do not incur any edge congestion. Previously this was not known even for series parallel graphs which have treewidth 2. The algorithm is based on a more general argument that applies to $k$-sums of graphs in some graph family, as long as the graph family has a constant factor, constant congestion bound. We then use this to show that such bounds hold for the class of $k$-sums of bounded genus graphs.

A characterization of graphs with 3-coverings and the evaluation of the 3-covering energy of star graphs with m rays of length 2
The smallest set Q of vertices of a graph G, such that every path on 3 vertices, has at least one vertex in Q, is a minimum 3-covering of G. By attaching loops of weight 1 to the vertices of G we can find the eigenvalues associated with G, and hence the minimum 3-covering energy of G. In this paper we characterize graphs with 3-coverings in terms of non-Q-covered edges, and we determine the minimum 3-covering energy of a star graph with m rays each of length 2.

Arc-transitive graphs of valency 8 have a semiregular automorphism
Published • View Publication • BIB
One version of the polycirculant conjecture states that every vertex-transitive graph has a semiregular automorphism. We give a proof of the conjecture in the arc-transitive case for graphs of valency 8, which was the smallest open case.

A short note on a short remark of Graham and Lovász
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let D be the distance matrix of a connected graph G and let nn(G), np(G) be the number of strictly negative and positive eigenvalues of D respectively. It was remarked in [1] that it is not known whether there is a graph for which np(G) > nn (G). In this note we show that there exists an infinite number of graphs satisfying the stated inequality, namely the conference graphs of order> 9. A large representative of this class being the Paley graphs. The result is obtained by derving the eigenvalues of the distance matrix of a strongly-regular graph.

The Mimimum 3-Covering Energy of Complete Graphs
In this paper we introduce a different kind of graph energy, the minimum 3-covering energy of a graph, and determine the minimum 3-covering energy of complete graphs.
Strong edge coloring of planar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A strong edge coloring of a graph is a proper edge coloring where the edges at distance at most two receive distinct colors. It is known that every planar graph with maximum degree D has a strong edge coloring with at most 4D + 4 colors. We show that 3D + 6 colors suffice if the graph has girth 6, and 3D colors suffice if the girth is at least 7. Moreover, we show that cubic planar graphs with girth at least 6 can be strongly edge colored with at most 9 colors.

Improved bound on facial parity edge coloring
Published • View Publication • BIB
A facial parity edge coloring of a 2-edge connected plane graph is an edge coloring where no two consecutive edges of a facial walk of any face receive the same color. Additionally, for every face f and every color c either no edge or an odd number of edges incident to f are colored by c. Czap, Jendrol', Kardoš and Sotak showed that every 2-edge connected plane graph admits a facial parity edge coloring with at most 20 colors. We improve this bound to 16 colors.
Geometric achromatic and pseudoachromatic indices
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics-2016 • View Publication • BIB
The pseudoachromatic index of a graph is the maximum number of colors that can be assigned to its edges, such that each pair of different colors is incident to a common vertex. If for each vertex its incident edges have different color, then this maximum is known as achromatic index. Both indices have been widely studied. A geometric graph is a graph drawn in the plane such that its vertices are points in general position, and its edges are straight-line segments. In this paper we extend the notion of pseudoachromatic and achromatic indices for geometric graphs, and present results for complete geometric graphs. In particular, we show that for $n$ points in convex position the achromatic index and the pseudoachromatic index of the complete geometric graph are $\lfloor \tfrac{n^2+n}{4} \rfloor$.

Monotonicity of the optimal perimeter in isoperimetric problems on ${\mathbb{Z}}^{k} \times {\mathbb{N}}^{d}$
We prove general theorems for isoperimetric problems on lattices of the form ${\mathbb{Z}}^{k} \times {\mathbb{N}}^{d}$ which state that the perimeter of the optimal set is a monotonically increasing function of the volume under certain natural assumptions, such as local symmetry or being induced by an $\ell_p$-norm. The proved monotonicity property is surprising considering that solutions are not always nested (and consequently standard techniques such as compressions do not apply). The monotonicity results of this note apply in particular to vertex- and edge-isoperimetric problems in the $\ell_p$ distances and can be used as a tool to elucidate properties of optimal sets. As an application, we consider the edge-isoperimetric inequality on the graph ${\N}^2$ in the $\ell_\infty$-distance. We show that there exist arbitrarily long consecutive values of the volume for which the minimum boundary is the same.

Hamiltonian cycles in Cayley graphs of imprimitive complex reflection groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalizing a result of Conway, Sloane, and Wilkes for real reflection groups, we show the Cayley graph of an imprimitive complex reflection group with respect to standard generating reflections has a Hamiltonian cycle. This is consistent with the long-standing conjecture that for every finite group, G, and every set of generators, S, of G the undirected Cayley graph of G with respect to S has a Hamiltonian cycle.

Asymptotic enumeration of sparse multigraphs with given degrees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let J and J* be subsets of Z+ such that 0,1\in J and 0\in J*. For infinitely many n, let k=(k_1,..., k_n) be a vector of nonnegative integers whose sum M is even. We find an asymptotic expression for the number of multigraphs on the vertex set {1,..., n} with degree sequence given by k, such that every loop has multiplicity in J* and every non-loop edge has multiplicity in J. Equivalently, these are symmetric integer matrices with values J* allowed on the diagonal and J off the diagonal. Our expression holds when the maximum degree K satisfies K = o(M^(1/3)). We prove this result using the switching method, building on an asymptotic enumeration of simple graphs with given degrees (McKay and Wormald, 1991). Our application of the switching method introduces a novel way of combining several different switching operations into a single computation.
l-facial edge colorings of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An l-facial edge coloring of a plane graph is a coloring of the edges such that any two edges at distance at most l on a boundary walk of some face receive distinct colors. It is conjectured that 3l + 1 colors suffice for an l-facial edge coloring of any plane graph. We prove that 7 colors suffice for a 2-facial edge coloring of any plane graph and therefore confirm the conjecture for l = 2.

Subgraphs Satisfying MSO Properties on z-Topologically Orderable Digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the notion of z-topological orderings for digraphs. We prove that given a digraph G on n vertices admitting a z-topological order- ing, together with such an ordering, one may count the number of subgraphs of G that at the same time satisfy a monadic second order formula φ and are the union of k directed paths, in time f (φ, k, z) * n^O(k*z) . Our result implies the polynomial time solvability of many natural counting problems on digraphs admitting z-topological orderings for constant values of z and k. Concerning the relationship between z-topological orderability and other digraph width measures, we observe that any digraph of directed path-width d has a z- topological ordering for z <= 2d + 1. On the other hand, there are digraphs on n vertices admitting a z-topological order for z = 2, but whose directed path-width is Θ(log n). Since graphs of bounded directed path-width can have both arbitrarily large undirected tree-width and arbitrarily large clique width, our result provides for the first time a suitable way of partially trans- posing metatheorems developed in the context of the monadic second order logic of graphs of constant undirected tree-width and constant clique width to the realm of digraph width measures that are closed under taking subgraphs and whose constant levels incorporate families of graphs of arbitrarily large undirected tree-width and arbitrarily large clique width.

Planar graphs with maximum degree D at least 8 are (D+1)-edge-choosable
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the problem of list edge coloring for planar graphs. Edge coloring is the problem of coloring the edges while ensuring that two edges that are incident receive different colors. A graph is k-edge-choosable if for any assignment of k colors to every edge, there is an edge coloring such that the color of every edge belongs to its color assignment. Vizing conjectured in 1965 that every graph is (D+1)-edge-choosable, where D is the maximum degree. In 1990, Borodin solved the conjecture for planar graphs with maximum degree at least 9, and asked whether the bound could be lowered to 8. We prove here that planar graphs with maximum degree D at least 8 are (D+1)-edge-choosable.

Minimal abundant packings and choosability with separation
A $(v,k,t)$ packing of size $b$ is a system of $b$ subsets (blocks) of a $v$-element underlying set such that each block has $k$ elements and every $t$-set is contained in at most one block. $P(v,k,t)$ stands for the maximum possible $b$. A packing is called abundant if $b> v$. We give new estimates for $P(v,k,t)$ around the critical range, slightly improving the Johnson bound and asymptotically determine the minimum $v=v_0(k,t)$ when abundant packings exist. For a graph $G$ and a positive integer $c$, let $χ_\ell(G,c)$ be the minimum value of $k$ such that one can properly color the vertices of $G$ from any assignment of lists $L(v)$ such that $|L(v)|=k$ for all $v\in V(G)$ and $|L(u)\cap L(v)|\leq c$ for all $uv\in E(G)$. Kratochvíl, Tuza and Voigt in 1998 asked to determine $\lim_{n\rightarrow \infty} χ_\ell(K_n,c)/\sqrt{cn}$ (if exists). Using our bound on $v_0(k,t)$, we prove that the limit exists and equals $1$. Given $c$, we find the exact value of $χ_\ell(K_n,c)$ for infinitely many $n$.

An Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem for matchings in the complete graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the following higher-order analog of the Erdős--Ko--Rado theorem. For positive integers r and n with r<= n, let M^r_n be the family of all matchings of size r in the complete graph K_{2n}. For any edge e in E(K_{2n}), the family M^r_n(e), which consists of all sets in M^r_n containing e, is called the star centered at e. We prove that if r<n and A is an intersecting family of matchings in M^r_n, then |A|<=|M^r_n(e)|$, where e is an edge in E(K_{2n}). We also prove that equality holds if and only if A is a star. The main technique we use to prove the theorem is an analog of Katona's elegant cycle method.

Potential Maximal Clique Algorithms for Perfect Phylogeny Problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Kloks, Kratsch, and Spinrad showed how treewidth and minimum-fill, NP-hard combinatorial optimization problems related to minimal triangulations, are broken into subproblems by block subgraphs defined by minimal separators. These ideas were expanded on by Bouchitté and Todinca, who used potential maximal cliques to solve these problems using a dynamic programming approach in time polynomial in the number of minimal separators of a graph. It is known that solutions to the perfect phylogeny problem, maximum compatibility problem, and unique perfect phylogeny problem are characterized by minimal triangulations of the partition intersection graph. In this paper, we show that techniques similar to those proposed by Bouchitté and Todinca can be used to solve the perfect phylogeny problem with missing data, the two- state maximum compatibility problem with missing data, and the unique perfect phylogeny problem with missing data in time polynomial in the number of minimal separators of the partition intersection graph.

Correlation of paths between distinct vertices in a randomly oriented graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that in a random tournament the events $\{s\rightarrow a\}$ and $\{t\rightarrow b\}$ are positively correlated, for distinct vertices $a,s,b,t \in K_n.$ It is also proven that the correlation between the events $\{s\rightarrow a\}$ and $\{t\rightarrow b\}$ in the random graphs $G(n,p)$ and $G(n,m)$ with random orientation is positive for every fixed $p>0$ and sufficiently large $n$ (with $m=\left\lfloor p \binom{n}{2}\right\rfloor$). We conjecture it to be positive for all $p$ and all $n$. An exact recursion for $¶(\{s\rightarrow a\} \cap \{t\rightarrow b\})$ in $\gnp$ is given.
