If $G$ is a looped graph, then its adjacency matrix represents a binary matroid $M_{A}(G)$ on $V(G)$. $M_{A}(G)$ may be obtained from the delta-matroid represented by the adjacency matrix of $G$, but $M_{A}(G)$ is less sensitive to the structure of $G$. Jaeger proved that every binary matroid is $M_{A}(G)$ for some $G$ [Ann. Discrete Math. 17 (1983), 371-376].
The relationship between the matroidal structure of $M_{A}(G)$ and the graphical structure of $G$ has many interesting features. For instance, the matroid minors $M_{A}(G)-v$ and $M_{A}(G)/v$ are both of the form $M_{A}(G^{\prime}-v)$ where $G^{\prime}$ may be obtained from $G$ using local complementation. In addition, matroidal considerations lead to a principal vertex tripartition, distinct from the principal edge tripartition of Rosenstiehl and Read [Ann. Discrete Math. 3 (1978), 195-226]. Several of these results are given two very different proofs, the first involving linear algebra and the second involving set systems or delta-matroids. Also, the Tutte polynomials of the adjacency matroids of $G$ and its full subgraphs are closely connected to the interlace polynomial of Arratia, Bollobás and Sorkin [Combinatorica 24 (2004), 567-584].
Dimers and cluster integrable systems

We show that the dimer model on a bipartite graph on a torus gives rise to a quantum integrable system of special type - a cluster integrable system. The phase space of the classical system contains, as an open dense subset, the moduli space of line bundles with connections on the graph. The sum of Hamiltonians is essentially the partition function of the dimer model. Any graph on a torus gives rise to a bipartite graph on the torus. We show that the phase space of the latter has a Lagrangian subvariety. We identify it with the space parametrizing resistor networks on the original graph. We construct several discrete quantum integrable systems.

Li, Nikiforov and Schelp conjectured that a 2-edge coloured graph G with order n and minimal degree strictly greater than 3n/4 contains a monochromatic cycle of length l, for all l at least four and at most n/2. We prove this conjecture for sufficiently large n and also find all 2-edge coloured graphs with minimal degree equal to 3n/4 that do not contain all such cycles. Finally we show that, for all positive constants d and sufficiently large n, a 2-edge coloured graph G of order n with minimal degree at least 3n/4 either contains a monochromatic cycle of length at least (2/3+d/2)n, or, in one of the two colours, contains a cycle of all lengths between three and (2/3-d)n.

We show, for any positive integer k, that there exists a graph in which any equitable partition of its vertices into k parts has at least ck^2/\log^* k pairs of parts which are not ε-regular, where c,ε>0 are absolute constants. This bound is tight up to the constant c and addresses a question of Gowers on the number of irregular pairs in Szemerédi's regularity lemma.
In order to gain some control over irregular pairs, another regularity lemma, known as the strong regularity lemma, was developed by Alon, Fischer, Krivelevich, and Szegedy. For this lemma, we prove a lower bound of wowzer-type, which is one level higher in the Ackermann hierarchy than the tower function, on the number of parts in the strong regularity lemma, essentially matching the upper bound. On the other hand, for the induced graph removal lemma, the standard application of the strong regularity lemma, we find a different proof which yields a tower-type bound.
We also discuss bounds on several related regularity lemmas, including the weak regularity lemma of Frieze and Kannan and the recently established regular approximation theorem. In particular, we show that a weak partition with approximation parameter εmay require as many as 2^{Ω(ε^{-2})} parts. This is tight up to the implied constant and solves a problem studied by Lovász and Szegedy.

We consider the normalized Laplace operator for directed graphs with positive and negative edge weights. This generalization of the normalized Laplace operator for undirected graphs is used to characterize directed acyclic graphs. Moreover, we identify certain structural properties of the underlying graph with extremal eigenvalues of the normalized Laplace operator. We prove comparison theorems that establish a relationship between the eigenvalues of directed graphs and certain undirected graphs. This relationship is used to derive eigenvalue estimates for directed graphs. Finally we introduce the concept of neighborhood graphs for directed graphs and use it to obtain further eigenvalue estimates.

A subgraph $H$ of a multigraph $G$ is called strongly spanning, if any vertex of $G$ is not isolated in $H$, while it is called maximum $k$-edge-colorable, if $H$ is proper $k$-edge-colorable and has the largest size. We introduce a graph-parameter $sp(G)$, that coincides with the smallest $k$ that a graph $G$ has a strongly spanning maximum $k$-edge-colorable subgraph. Our first result offers some alternative definitions of $sp(G)$. Next, we show that $Δ(G)$ is an upper bound for $sp(G)$, and then we characterize the class of graphs $G$ that satisfy $sp(G)=Δ(G)$. Finally, we prove some bounds for $sp(G)$ that involve well-known graph-theoretic parameters.
A Wowzer Type Lower Bound for the Strong Regularity Lemma

The regularity lemma of Szemeredi asserts that one can partition every graph into a bounded number of quasi-random bipartite graphs. In some applications however, one would like to have a strong control on how quasi-random these bipartite graphs are. Alon, Fischer, Krivelevich and Szegedy obtained a powerful variant of the regularity lemma, which allows one to have an arbitrary control on this measure of quasi-randomness. However, their proof only guaranteed to produce a partition where the number of parts is given by the Wowzer function, which is the iterated version of the Tower function. We show here that a bound of this type is unavoidable by constructing a graph H, with the property that even if one wants a very mild control on the quasi-randomness of a regular partition, then any such partition of H must have a number of parts given by a Wowzer-type function.
Counterexamples to a Monotonicity Conjecture for the Threshold Pebbling Number
Graph pebbling considers the problem of transforming configurations of discrete pebbles to certain target configurations on the vertices of a graph, using the so-called pebbling move. This paper provides counterexamples to a monotonicity conjecture stated by Hurlbert et al. concerning the pebbling number compared to the pebbling threshold.

We describe and analyse a simple greedy algorithm \2G\ that finds a good 2-matching $M$ in the random graph $G=G_{n,cn}^{\d\geq 3}$ when $c\geq 15$. A 2-matching is a spanning subgraph of maximum degree two and $G$ is drawn uniformly from graphs with vertex set $[n]$, $cn$ edges and minimum degree at least three. By good we mean that $M$ has $O(\log n)$ components. We then use this 2-matching to build a Hamilton cycle in $O(n^{1.5+o(1)})$ time \whp.

Let $\mc{F}$ be a family of graphs. A graph is {\em $\mc{F}$-free} if it contains no copy of a graph in $\mc{F}$ as a subgraph. A cornerstone of extremal graph theory is the study of the {\em Turán number} $ex(n,\mc{F})$, the maximum number of edges in an $\mc{F}$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Define the {\em Zarankiewicz number} $z(n,\mc{F})$ to be the maximum number of edges in an $\mc{F}$-free {\em bipartite} graph on $n$ vertices. Let $C_k$ denote a cycle of length $k$, and let $\mc{C}_k$ denote the set of cycles $C_{\ell}$, where $3 \le \ell \leq k$ and $\ell$ and $k$ have the same parity. Erdős and Simonovits conjectured that for any family $\mc{F}$ consisting of bipartite graphs there exists an odd integer $k$ such that $ex(n,\mc{F} \cup \mc{C}_k) \sim z(n,\mc{F})$. They proved this when $\mc{F}={C_4}$ by showing that $ex(n,\{C_4,C_5\}) \sim z(n,C_4)$. In this paper, we extend this result by showing that if $\ell \in \{2,3,5\}$ and $k > 2\ell$ is odd, then ${ex(n,\mc{C}_{2\ell} \cup {C_k}) \sim z(n,\mc{C}_{2\ell})$. Furthermore, if $k > 2\ell + 2$ is odd, then for infinitely many $n$ we show that the extremal $\mc{C}_{2\ell} \cup \{C_k\}$-free graphs are bipartite incidence graphs of generalized polygons. We observe that this exact result does not hold for any odd $k < 2\ell$, and furthermore the asymptotic result does not hold when $(\ell,k)$ is $(3,3)$, $(5,3)$ or $(5,5)$. Our proofs make use of pseudorandomness properties of nearly extremal graphs that are of independent interest.

In rotor walk on a finite directed graph, the exits from each vertex follow a prescribed periodic sequence. Here we consider the case of rotor walk where a particle starts from a designated source vertex and continues until it hits a designated target set, at which point the walk is restarted from the source. We show that the sequence of successively hit targets, which is easily seen to be eventually periodic, is in fact periodic. We show moreover that reversing the periodic patterns of all rotor sequences causes the periodic pattern of the hitting sequence to be reversed as well. The proofs involve a new notion of equivalence of rotor configurations, and an extension of rotor walk incorporating time-reversed particles.
Computing the obstacle number of a plane graph
An obstacle representation of a plane graph G is V(G) together with a set of opaque polygonal obstacles such that G is the visibility graph on V(G) determined by the obstacles. We investigate the problem of computing an obstacle representation of a plane graph (ORPG) with a minimum number of obstacles. We call this minimum size the obstacle number of G.
First, we show that ORPG is NP-hard by reduction from planar vertex cover, resolving a question posed by [8]. Second, we give a reduction from ORPG to maximum degree 3 planar vertex cover. Since this reduction preserves solution values, it follows that ORPG is fixed parameter tractable (FPT) and admits a polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS).

We consider several stochastic service systems, and study the asymptotic behavior of the moments of various quantities that have application to models for random interval graphs and algorithms for searching for an idle server or empty waiting station. In two cases the moments turn out to involve Lambert series for the generating functions for the sums of powers of divisors of positive integers. For these cases we are able to obtain complete asymptotic expansions for the moments of the quantities in question.

Let $G$ be a (di)graph. A set $W$ of vertices in $G$ is a \emph{resolving set} of $G$ if every vertex $u$ of $G$ is uniquely determined by its vector of distances to all the vertices in $W$. The \emph{metric dimension} $μ(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of all the resolving sets of $G$. Cáceres et al. \cite{Ca2} computed the metric dimension of the line graphs of complete bipartite graphs. Recently, Bailey and Cameron \cite{Ba} computed the metric dimension of the line graphs of complete graphs. In this paper we study the metric dimension of the line graph $L(G)$ of $G$. In particular, we show that $μ(L(G))=|E(G)|-|V(G)|$ for a strongly connected digraph $G$ except for directed cycles, where $V(G)$ is the vertex set and $E(G)$ is the edge set of $G$. As a corollary, the metric dimension of de Brujin digraphs and Kautz digraphs is given. Moreover, we prove that $\lceil\log_2Δ(G)\rceil\leqμ(L(G))\leq |V(G)|-2$ for a simple connected graph $G$ with at least five vertices, where $Δ(G)$ is the maximum degree of $G$. Finally, we obtain the metric dimension of the line graph of a tree in terms of its parameters.

Given $d+1$ sets, or colours, $S_1, S_2,...,S_{d+1}$ of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, a {\em colourful} set is a set $S\subseteq\bigcup_i S_i$ such that $|S\cap S_i|\leq 1$ for $i=1,...,d+1$. The convex hull of a colourful set $S$ is called a {\em colourful simplex}. Bárány's colourful Carathéodory theorem asserts that if the origin 0 is contained in the convex hull of $S_i$ for $i=1,...,d+1$, then there exists a colourful simplex containing 0. The sufficient condition for the existence of a colourful simplex containing 0 was generalized to 0 being contained in the convex hull of $S_i\cup S_j$ for $1\leq i< j \leq d+1$ by Arocha et al. and by Holmsen et al. We further generalize the sufficient condition and obtain new colourful Carathéodory theorems. We also give an algorithm to find a colourful simplex containing 0 under the generalized condition. In the plane an alternative, and more general, proof using graphs is given. In addition, we observe that any condition implying the existence of a colourful simplex containing 0 actually implies the existence of $\min_i|S_i|$ such simplices.

Homological Stabilizer Codes

In this paper we define homological stabilizer codes which encompass codes such as Kitaev's toric code and the topological color codes. These codes are defined solely by the graphs they reside on. This feature allows us to use properties of topological graph theory to determine the graphs which are suitable as homological stabilizer codes. We then show that all toric codes are equivalent to homological stabilizer codes on 4-valent graphs. We show that the topological color codes and toric codes correspond to two distinct classes of graphs. We define the notion of label set equivalencies and show that under a small set of constraints the only homological stabilizer codes without local logical operators are equivalent to Kitaev's toric code or to the topological color codes.

A {\it krausz $(k,m)$-partition} of a graph $G$ is the partition of $G$ into cliques, such that any vertex belongs to at most $k$ cliques and any two cliques have at most $m$ vertices in common. The {\it $m$-krausz} dimension $kdim_m(G)$ of the graph $G$ is the minimum number $k$ such that $G$ has a krausz $(k,m)$-partition. 1-krausz dimension is known and studied krausz dimension of graph $kdim(G)$.
In this paper we prove, that the problem $"kdim(G)\leq 3"$ is polynomially solvable for chordal graphs, thus partially solving the problem of P. Hlineny and J. Kratochvil. We show, that the problem of finding $m$-krausz dimension is NP-hard for every $m\geq 1$, even if restricted to (1,2)-colorable graphs, but the problem $"kdim_m(G)\leq k"$ is polynomially solvable for $(\infty,1)$-polar graphs for every fixed $k,m\geq 1$.
