Forts, (fractional) zero forcing, and Cartesian products of graphs
The (disjoint) fort number and fractional zero forcing number are introduced and related to existing parameters including the (standard) zero forcing number. The fort hypergraph is introduced and hypergraph results on transversals and matchings are applied to the zero forcing number and fort number. These results are used to establish a Vizing-like lower bound for the zero forcing number of a Cartesian product of graphs for certain families of graphs, and a family of graphs achieving this lower bound is exhibited.
On stability of weighted spanning tree degree enumerators
Our previous paper shows that the (vertex) spanning tree degree enumerator polynomial of a connected graph $G$ is a real stable polynomial (id est is non-zero if all variables have positive imaginary parts) if and only if $G$ is distance-hereditary. In this note we generalize the result on weighted graphs. This generalization allows us to define the class of weighted distance-hereditary graphs.

We study covering numbers of subsets of the symmetric group $S_n$ that exhibit closure under conjugation, known as \emph{normal} sets. We show that for any $ε>0$, there exists $n_0$ such that if $n>n_0$ and $A$ is a normal subset of the symmetric group $S_n$ of density $\ge e^{-n^{2/5 - ε}}$, then $A^2 \supseteq A_n$. This improves upon a seminal result of Larsen and Shalev (Inventiones Math., 2008), with our $2/5$ in the double exponent replacing their $1/4$.
Our proof strategy combines two types of techniques. The first is `traditional' techniques rooted in character bounds and asymptotics for the Witten zeta function, drawing from the foundational works of Liebeck--Shalev, Larsen--Shalev, and more recently, Larsen--Tiep. The second is a sharp hypercontractivity theorem in the symmetric group, which was recently obtained by Keevash and Lifshitz. This synthesis of algebraic and analytic methodologies not only allows us to attain our improved bounds but also provides new insights into the behavior of general independent sets in normal Cayley graphs over symmetric groups.
A collection of open problems in celebration of Imre Leader's 60th birthday
One of the great pleasures of working with Imre Leader is to experience his infectious delight on encountering a compelling combinatorial problem. This collection of open problems in combinatorics has been put together by a subset of his former PhD students and students-of-students for the occasion of his 60th birthday. All of the contributors have been influenced (directly or indirectly) by Imre: his personality, enthusiasm and his approach to mathematics. The problems included cover many of the areas of combinatorial mathematics that Imre is most associated with: including extremal problems on graphs, set systems and permutations, and Ramsey theory. This is a personal selection of problems which we find intriguing and deserving of being better known. It is not intended to be systematic, or to consist of the most significant or difficult questions in any area. Rather, our main aim is to celebrate Imre and his mathematics and to hope that these problems will make him smile. We also hope this collection will be a useful resource for researchers in combinatorics and will stimulate some enjoyable collaborations and beautiful mathematics.
Abundance: Asymmetric Graph Removal Lemmas and Integer Solutions to Linear Equations
We prove that a large family of pairs of graphs satisfy a polynomial dependence in asymmetric graph removal lemmas. In particular, we give an unexpected answer to a question of Gishboliner, Shapira, and Wigderson by showing that for every $t \geqslant 4$, there are $K_t$-abundant graphs of chromatic number $t$. Using similar methods, we also extend work of Ruzsa by proving that a set $\mathcal{A} \subset \{1,\dots,N\}$ which avoids solutions with distinct integers to an equation of genus at least two has size $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{N})$. The best previous bound was $N^{1 - o(1)}$ and the exponent of $1/2$ is best possible in such a result. Finally, we investigate the relationship between polynomial dependencies in asymmetric removal lemmas and the problem of avoiding integer solutions to equations. The results suggest a potentially deep correspondence. Many open questions remain.
Rainbow subgraphs of uniformly coloured randomly perturbed graphs
For a given $δ\in (0,1)$, the randomly perturbed graph model is defined as the union of any $n$-vertex graph $G_0$ with minimum degree $δn$ and the binomial random graph $\mathbf{G}(n,p)$ on the same vertex set. Moreover, we say that a graph is uniformly coloured with colours in $\mathcal{C}$ if each edge is coloured independently and uniformly at random with a colour from $\mathcal{C}$.
Based on a coupling idea of McDiarmird, we provide a general tool to tackle problems concerning finding a rainbow copy of a graph $H=H(n)$ in a uniformly coloured perturbed $n$-vertex graph with colours in $[(1+o(1))e(H)]$. For example, our machinery easily allows to recover a result of Aigner-Horev and Hefetz concerning rainbow Hamilton cycles, and to improve a result of Aigner-Horev, Hefetz and Lahiri concerning rainbow bounded-degree spanning trees.
Furthermore, using different methods, we prove that for any $δ\in (0,1)$ and integer $d \ge 2$, there exists $C=C(δ,d)>0$ such that the following holds. Let $T$ be a tree on $n$ vertices with maximum degree at most $d$ and $G_0$ be an $n$-vertex graph with $δ(G_0)\ge δn$. Then a uniformly coloured $G_0 \cup \mathbf{G}(n,C/n)$ with colours in $[n-1]$ contains a rainbow copy of $T$ with high probability. This is optimal both in terms of colours and edge probability (up to a constant factor).
Induced subdivisions in $K_{s,s}$-free graphs with polynomial average degree
In this paper we prove that for every $s\geq 2$ and every graph $H$ the following holds. Let $G$ be a graph with average degree $Ω_H(s^{C|H|^2})$, for some absolute constant $C>0$, then $G$ either contains a $K_{s,s}$ or an induced subdivision of $H$. This is essentially tight and confirms a conjecture of Bonamy, Bousquet, Pilipczuk, Rzążewski, Thomassé, and Walczak. A slightly weaker form of this has been independently proved by Bourneuf, Bucić, Cook, and Davies.
We actually prove a much more general result which implies the above (with worse dependence on $|H|$). We show that for every $ k\geq 2$ there is $C_k>0$ such that any graph $G$ with average degree $s^{C_k}$ either contains a $K_{s,s}$ or an induced subgraph $G'\subseteq G$ without $C_4$'s and with average degree at least $k$.
Finally, using similar methods we can prove the following. For every $k,t\geq 2$ every graph $G$ with average degree at least $C_tk^{Ω(t)}$ must contain either a $K_k$, an induced $K_{t,t}$ or an induced subdivision of $K_k$. This is again essentially tight up to the implied constants and answers in a strong form a question of Davies.
The zero forcing numbers and propagation times of gear graphs and helm graphs
Zero forcing is a dynamic coloring process on graphs. Initially, each vertex of a graph is assigned a color of either blue or white, and then a process begins by which blue vertices force white vertices to become blue. The zero forcing number is the cardinality of the smallest set of initially blue vertices which can force the entire graph to become blue, and the propagation time is the minimum number of steps in such a zero forcing process. In this paper we will determine the zero forcing numbers and propagation times of two infinite classes of graphs called gear graphs and helm graphs.
Signed circuit $6$-covers of signed $K_4$-minor-free graphs
Bermond, Jackson and Jaeger [{\em J. Combin. Theory Ser. B} 35 (1983): 297-308] proved that every bridgeless ordinary graph $G$ has a circuit $4$-cover and Fan [{\em J. Combin. Theory Ser. B} 54 (1992): 113-122] showed that $G$ has a circuit $6$-cover which together implies that $G$ has a circuit $k$-cover for every even integer $k\ge 4$. The only left case when $k = 2$ is the well-know circuit double cover conjecture. For signed circuit $k$-cover of signed graphs, it is known that for every integer $k\leq 5$, there are infinitely many coverable signed graphs without signed circuit $k$-cover and there are signed eulerian graphs that admit nowhere-zero $2$-flow but don't admit a signed circuit $1$-cover. Fan conjectured that every coverable signed graph has a signed circuit $6$-cover. This conjecture was verified only for signed eulerian graphs and for signed graphs whose bridgeless-blocks are eulerian. In this paper, we prove that this conjecture holds for signed $K_4$-minor-free graphs. The $6$-cover is best possible for signed $K_4$-minor-free graphs.
A Lower Bound for R(5,6)
The known lower bound for the the classical Ramsey number $R(5,6)$ is improved from $58$ to $59$. The method used to construct the graph is a simple variant of computational methods that have been previously used to construct Ramsey graphs. The new method uses the concurrent programming features of the {\em Go} programming language.
Vertex spans of multilayered cycles
In this paper we are defining a special class of graphs called multilayered graphs and its subclass, multilayered cycles. For that subclass of graphs we are giving the values of all vertex spans (strong, direct, or Cartesian span). Surprisingly, our results reveal that, irrespective of the chosen movement rules, the span values only depend on the length of the individual cycles, not the number of layers, which holds significant implications.
On the $C_4$-isolation number of a graph
Let $C_k$ be the cycle of length $k$. For any graph $G$, a subset $D \subseteq V(G)$ is a $C_k$-isolating set of $G$ if the graph obtained from $G$ by deleting the closed neighbourhood of $D$ contains no $C_k$ as a subgraph. The $C_k$-isolation number of $G$, denoted by $ι(G,C_k)$, is the cardinality of a smallest $C_k$-isolating set of $G$. Borg (2020) and Borg et al. (2022) proved that if $G \ncong C_3$ is a connected graph of order $n$ and size $m$, then $ι(G,C_3) \leq \frac{n}{4}$ and $ι(G,C_3) \leq \frac{m+1}{5}$. Very recently, Bartolo, Borg and Scicluna showed that if $G$ is a connected graph of order $n$ that is not one of the determined nine graphs, then $ι(G,C_4) \leq \frac{n}{5}$. In this paper, we prove that if $G \ncong C_4$ is a connected graph of size $m$, then $ι(G,C_4) \leq \frac{m+1}{6}$, and we characterize the graphs that attain the bound. Moreover, we conjecture that if $G \ncong C_k$ is a connected graph of size $m$, then $ι(G,C_k) \leq \frac{m+1}{k+2}$.

In this article, we characterize Cohen-Macaulay permutation graphs. In particular, we show that a permutation graph is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if it is well-covered and there exists a unique way of partitioning its vertex set into $r$ disjoint maximal cliques, where $r$ is the cardinality of a maximal independent set of the graph. We also provide some sufficient conditions for a comparability graph to be a uniquely partially orderable (UPO) graph.
On the Smooth Locus in Flat Linear Degenerations of Flag Varieties
We use some moment graph techniques, recently introduced by Lanini and Pütz, to provide a combinatorial description of the smooth locus in flat linear degenerations of flag varieties, generalizing a result proved by Cerulli Irelli, Feigin and Reineke for the Feigin degeneration. Moreover, we propose a different combinatorial criterion linking the smoothness at a fixed point to transitive tournaments.
Improved asymptotic upper bounds for the minimum number of pairwise distinct longest cycles in regular graphs
We study how few pairwise distinct longest cycles a regular graph can have under additional constraints. For each integer $r \geq 5$, we give exponential improvements for the best asymptotic upper bounds for this invariant under the additional constraint that the graphs are $r$-regular hamiltonian graphs. Earlier work showed that a conjecture by Haythorpe on a lower bound for this invariant is false because of an incorrect constant factor, whereas our results imply that the conjecture is even asymptotically incorrect. Motivated by a question of Zamfirescu and work of Chia and Thomassen, we also study this invariant for non-hamiltonian 2-connected $r$-regular graphs and show that in this case the invariant can be bounded from above by a constant for all large enough graphs, even for graphs with arbitrarily large girth.
On the nontrivial extremal eigenvalues of graphs
We present a finer quantitative version of an observation due to Breuillard, Green, Guralnick and Tao which tells that for finite non-bipartite Cayley graphs, once the nontrivial eigenvalues of their normalized adjacency matrices are uniformly bounded away from $1$, then they are also uniformly bounded away from $-1$. Unlike previous works which depend heavily on combinatorial arguments, we rely more on analysis of eigenfunctions. We establish a new explicit lower bound for the gap between $-1$ and the smallest normalized adjacency eigenvalue, which improves previous lower bounds in terms of edge-expansion, and is comparable to the best known lower bound in terms of vertex-expansion.
On The Toric Ideals of the Coloured Graphs of Reduced Words
We study a family $\mathcal{B}$ of pseudo-multipartite graphs indexed by staircase partitions. They are realised from the reduced words of certain class of permutations. We investigate the vertex proper colouring of these graphs and give the general chromatic polynomial. For each member $B_λ$, we construct an affine toric ideal $\mathcal{I}_{B_λ}$ associated to vertex proper colouring using partition identity. It turns out that the projective version $\mathcal{V}(\mathcal{I}_{B_λ})$ is realised from the cartoon diagram associated with the vertex proper colouring.
Towards Erdős-Hajnal property for dp-minimal graphs
We introduce the notion of strongly $\binom{k}{2}$-free graphs, which contain dp-minimal graphs. We show that under some sparsity assumption, given a rainbow $\binom{k}{2}$-free blockade we can find a rainbow $\binom{k-1}{2}$-free blockade. This might serve as an intermediate step towards Erd\H os-Hajnal property for dp-minimal graphs.
Weak diameter choosability of graphs with an excluded minor

Weak diameter coloring of graphs recently attracted attention partially due to its connection to asymptotic dimension of metric spaces. We consider weak diameter list-coloring of graphs in this paper. Dvořák and Norin proved that graphs with bounded Euler genus are 3-choosable with bounded weak diameter. In this paper, we extend their result by showing that for every graph $H$, $H$-minor free graphs are 3-choosable with bounded weak diameter. The upper bound 3 is optimal and it strengthens an earlier result for non-list-coloring $H$-minor free graphs with bounded weak diameter. As a corollary, $H$-minor free graphs with bounded maximum degree are 3-choosable with bounded clustering, strengthening an earlier result for non-list-coloring.
When $H$ is planar, we prove a much stronger result: for every 2-list-assignment $L$ of an $H$-minor free graph, every precoloring with bounded weak diameter can be extended to an $L$-coloring with bounded weak diameter. As a corollary, for any planar graph $H$ and $H$-minor free graph $G$, there are exponentially many list-colorings of $G$ with bounded weak diameter (and with bounded clustering if $G$ also has bounded maximum degree); and every graph with bounded layered tree-width and bounded maximum degree has exponentially many 3-colorings with bounded clustering.
We also show that the aforementioned results for list-coloring cannot be extended to odd minor free graphs by showing that some bipartite graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ are $k$-choosable with bounded weak diameter only when $k=Ω(\logΔ/\log\logΔ)$. On the other hand, we show that odd $H$-minor graphs are 3-colorable with bounded weak diameter, implying an earlier result about clustered coloring of odd $H$-minor free graphs with bounded maximum degree.
Some results on the maximal chromatic polynomials of $2$-connected $k$-chromatic graphs
In 2015, Brown and Erey conjectured that every $2$-connected graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with chromatic number $k\geq 4$ has at most $(x-1)_{k-1}\big((x-1)^{n-k+1}+(-1)^{n-k}\big)$ proper $x$-colorings for all $x\geq k$. Engbers, Erey, Fox, and He proved this conjecture for $x=k$. In this paper, we prove Brown and Erey's conjecture under the condition that either the clique number of $G$ is $k$, or the independent number of $G$ is $2$.
