Multivariate permutation entropy, a Cartesian graph product approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
Entropy metrics are nonlinear measures to quantify the complexity of time series. Among them, permutation entropy is a common metric due to its robustness and fast computation. Multivariate entropy metrics techniques are needed to analyse data consisting of more than one time series. To this end, we present a multivariate permutation entropy, $MPE_G$, using a graph-based approach. Given a multivariate signal, the algorithm $MPE_G$ involves two main steps: 1) we construct an underlying graph G as the Cartesian product of two graphs G1 and G2, where G1 preserves temporal information of each times series together with G2 that models the relations between different channels, and 2) we consider the multivariate signal as samples defined on the regular graph G and apply the recently introduced permutation entropy for graphs. Our graph-based approach gives the flexibility to consider diverse types of cross channel relationships and signals, and it overcomes with the limitations of current multivariate permutation entropy.
A study on edge coloring and edge sum coloring of integral sum graphs
Frank Harary introduced the concept of integral sum graph. A graph $G$ is an \emph{ integral sum graph} if its vertices can be labeled with distinct integers so that $e = uv$ is an edge of $G$ if and only if the sum of the labels on vertices $u$ and $v$ is also a label in $G.$ For any non-empty set of integers $S$, let $G^+(S)$ denote the integral sum graph on the set $S$. In $G^+(S)$, we define an \emph{edge-sum class} as the set of all edges each with same edge sum number and call $G^+(S)$ an \emph{edge sum color graph} if each edge-sum class is considered as an edge color class of $G^+(S)$. The number of distinct edge-sum classes of $G^+(S)$ is called its \emph{ edge sum chromatic number}. The main results of this paper are (i) the set of all edge-sum classes of an integral sum graph partitions its edge set; (ii) the edge chromatic number and the edge sum chromatic number are equal for the integral sum graphs $G_{0,s}$ and $S_n$, Star graph of order $n$, whereas it is not in the case of $G_{r,s} = G^+([r,s])$, $r < 0 < s$, $n,s \geq 2$, $n,r,s\in\mathbb{N}$. We also obtain an interesting integral sum labeling of Star graphs.

On the complexity of finding well-balanced orientations with upper bounds on the out-degrees
We show that the problem of deciding whether a given graph $G$ has a well-balanced orientation $\vec{G}$ such that $d_{\vec{G}}^+(v)\leq \ell(v)$ for all $v \in V(G)$ for a given function $\ell:V(G)\rightarrow \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ is NP-complete. We also prove a similar result for best-balanced orientations. This improves a result of Bern\' ath, Iwata, Kir\' aly, Király and Szigeti and answers a question of Frank.

All Graphs with at most 8 nodes are 2-interval-PCGs
Published in Fundamenta Informaticae, Volume 193 (May 14, 2025) fi:12237 • View PublicationBIB
A graph G is a multi-interval PCG if there exist an edge weighted tree T with non-negative real values and disjoint intervals of the non-negative real half-line such that each node of G is uniquely associated to a leaf of T and there is an edge between two nodes in G if and only if the weighted distance between their corresponding leaves in T lies within any such intervals. If the number of intervals is k, then we call the graph a k-interval-PCG; in symbols, G = k-interval-PCG (T, I1, . . . , Ik). It is known that 2-interval-PCGs do not contain all graphs and the smallest known graph outside this class has 135 nodes. Here we prove that all graphs with at most 8 nodes are 2-interval-PCGs, so doing one step towards the determination of the smallest value of n such that there exists an n node graph that is not a 2-interval-PCG.

Improved bounds for acyclic coloring parameters
Published • View PublicationBIB
The {\em acyclic chromatic number} of a graph is the least number of colors needed to properly color its vertices so that none of its cycles has only two colors. The {\em acyclic chromatic index} is the analogous graph parameter for edge colorings. We first show that the acyclic chromatic index is at most $2Δ-1$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of the graph. We then show that for all $ε>0$ and for $Δ$ large enough (depending on $ε$), the acyclic chromatic number of the graph is at most $\lceil(4^{-1/3} +ε) Δ^{4/3} \rceil +Δ+ 1$. Both results improve long chains of previous successive advances. Both are algorithmic, in the sense that the colorings are generated by randomized algorithms. Previous randomized algorithms assume the availability of enough colors to guarantee properness deterministically and use additional colors in dealing with the bichromatic cycles in a randomized fashion. In contrast, our algorithm initially generates colorings that are not necessarily proper; it only aims at avoiding cycles where all pairs of edges, or vertices, that are one edge, or vertex, apart in a traversal of the cycle are homochromatic (of the same color). When this goal is reached, the algorithm checks for properness and if necessary it repeats until properness is attained. Thus savings in the number of colors is attained.

Radio Number for the Cartesian Product of Two Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple connected graph. For any two vertices $u$ and $v$, let $d(u,v)$ denote the distance between $u$ and $v$ in $G$, and let $diam(G)$ denote the diameter of $G$. A radio-labeling of $G$ is a function $f$ which assigns to each vertex a non-negative integer (label) such that for every distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ in $G$, it holds that $|f(u)-f(v)| \geq diam(G) - d(u,v) +1$. The span of $f$ is the difference between the largest and smallest labels of $f(V)$. The radio number of $G$, denoted by $rn(G)$, is the smallest span of a radio labeling admitted by $G$. In this paper, we give a lower bound for the radio number of the Cartesian product of two trees. Moreover, we present three necessary and sufficient conditions, and three sufficient conditions for the product of two trees to achieve this bound. Applying these results, we determine the radio number of the Cartesian product of two stars as well as a path and a star.

Lattice of Integer Flows and the Poset of Strongly Connected Orientations for Regular Matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A 2010 result of Amini provides a way to extract information about the structure of the graph from the geometry of the Voronoi polytope of the lattice of integer flows (which determines the graph up to two-isomorphism). Specifically, Amini shows that the face poset of the Voronoi polytope is isomorphic to the poset of strongly connected orientations of subgraphs. This answers a question raised by Caporaso and Viviani, and Amini also proves a dual result for integer cuts. In this paper we generalise Amini's result to regular matroids; in this context the theorem for integer cuts becomes a direct consequence of the theorem for integer flows, by making duality explicit as matroid duality.

On the walk matrix of the Dynkin graph $D_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $W(D_n)$ denote the walk matrix of the Dynkin graph $D_n$, a tree obtained from the path of order $n-1$ by adding a pendant edge at the second vertex. We prove that $\text{rank}\,W(D_n)=n-2$ if $4\mid n$ and $\text{rank}\,W(D_n)=n-1$ otherwise. Furthermore, we prove that the Smith normal form of $W(D_n)$ is $$\text{diag}[\underbrace{1,1,\ldots,1}_{\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil},\underbrace{2,2,\ldots,2}_{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor-1},0]$$ when $4\nmid n$. This confirms a recent conjecture in [W.Wang, F.Liu, W.Wang, Generalized spectral characterizations of almost controllable graphs, European J. Combin., 96(2021):103348].

Heroes in oriented complete multipartite graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The dichromatic number of a digraph is the minimum size of a partition of its vertices into acyclic induced subgraphs. Given a class of digraphs $\mathcal C$, a digraph $H$ is a hero in $\mc C$ if $H$-free digraphs of $\mathcal C$ have bounded dichromatic number. In a seminal paper, Berger at al. give a simple characterization of all heroes in tournaments. In this paper, we give a simple proof that heroes in quasi-transitive oriented graphs are the same as heroes in tournaments. We also prove that it is not the case in the class of oriented multipartite graphs, disproving a conjecture of Aboulker, Charbit and Naserasr. We also give a full characterisation of heroes in oriented complete multipartite graphs up to the status of a single tournament on $6$ vertices.

Enumeration of chordal planar graphs and maps
We determine the number of labelled chordal planar graphs with $n$ vertices, which is asymptotically $c_1\cdot n^{-5/2} γ^n n!$ for a constant $c_1>0$ and $γ\approx 11.89235$. We also determine the number of rooted simple chordal planar maps with $n$ edges, which is asymptotically $c_2 n^{-3/2} δ^n$, where $δ= 1/σ\approx 6.40375$, and $σ$ is an algebraic number of degree 12. The proofs are based on combinatorial decompositions and singularity analysis. Chordal planar graphs (or maps) are a natural example of a subcritical class of graphs in which the class of 3-connected graphs is relatively rich. The 3-connected members are precisely chordal triangulations, those obtained starting from $K_4$ by repeatedly adding vertices adjacent to an existing triangular face.

A new infinite family of star normal quotient graphs of twisted wreath type
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct the first infinite families of locally arc transitive graphs with the property that the automorphism group has two orbits on vertices and is quasiprimitive on exactly one orbit, of twisted wreath type. This work contributes to Giudici, Li and Praeger's program for the classification of locally arc transitive graphs by showing that the star normal quotient twisted wreath category also contains infinitely many graphs.

The $m$-bipartite Ramsey number of the $K_{2,2}$ versus $K_{6,6}$
Given bipartite graphs $G_1, \ldots, G_n$, the bipartite Ramsey number $BR(G_1,\ldots, G_n)$ is the last integer $b$ such that any complete bipartite graph $K_{b,b}$ with edges coloured with colours $1,2,\ldots,n$ contains a copy of some $G_i$ ($1\leq i\leq n$) where all edges of $G_i$ have colour $i$. As another view of bipartite Ramsey numbers, for given bipartite graphs $G_1, \ldots, G_n$ and a positive integer $m$, the $m$-bipartite Ramsey number $BR_m(G_1, \ldots, G_n)$, is defined as the least integer $b$, such that any complete bipartite graph $K_{m,b}$ with edges coloured with colours $1,2,\ldots,n$ contains a copy of some $G_i$ ($1\leq i\leq n$) where all edges of $G_i$ have colour $i$. The size of $BR_m(G_1, G_2)$, where $G_1=K_{2,2}$ and $G_2\in \{K_{3,3}, K_{4,4}\}$ for each $m$ and the size of $BR_m(K_{3,3}, K_{3,3})$ and $BR_m(K_{2,2}, K_{5,5})$ for special values of $m$, have been determined in several article up to now. In this article, we compute the size of $BR_m(K_{2,2}, K_{6,6})$ for some $m\geq 2$.

Constructing the $r$-uniform supertrees with the same spectral radius and matching energyv
Published • View PublicationBIB
An $r$-uniform supertree is a connected and acyclic hypergraph of which each edge has $r$ vertices, where $r\geq 3$. We propose the concept of matching energy for an $r$-uniform hypergraph, which is defined as the sum of the absolute value of all the eigenvalues of its matching polynomial. With the aid of the matching polynomial of an $r$-uniform supertree, three pairs of $r$-uniform supertrees with the same spectral radius and the same matching energy are constructed, and two infinite families of $r$-uniform supertrees with the same spectral radius and the same matching energy are characterized. Some known results about the graphs with the same spectra regarding to their adjacency matrices can be naturally deduced from our new results.

On the chromatic number of some $P_5$-free graphs

Let $G$ be a graph. We say that $G$ is perfectly divisible if for each induced subgraph $H$ of $G$, $V(H)$ can be partitioned into $A$ and $B$ such that $H[A]$ is perfect and $ω(H[B])<ω(H)$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. For two disjoint graphs $F_1$ and $F_2$, we use $F_1\cup F_2$ to denote the graph with vertex set $V(F_1)\cup V(F_2)$ and edge set $E(F_1)\cup E(F_2)$, and use $F_1+F_2$ to denote the graph with vertex set $V(F_1)\cup V(F_2)$ and edge set $E(F_1)\cup E(F_2)\cup \{xy\;|\; x\in V(F_1)\mbox{ and } y\in V(F_2)\}$. In this paper, we prove that (i) $(P_5, C_5, K_{2, 3})$-free graphs are perfectly divisible, (ii) $χ(G)\le 2ω^2(G)-ω(G)-3$ if $G$ is $(P_5, K_{2,3})$-free with $ω(G)\ge 2$, (iii) $χ(G)\le {3\over 2}(ω^2(G)-ω(G))$ if $G$ is $(P_5, K_1+2K_2)$-free, and (iv) $χ(G)\le 3ω(G)+11$ if $G$ is $(P_5, K_1+(K_1\cup K_3))$-free.

On the regular 2-connected 2-path Hamiltonian graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph $G$ is $l$-path Hamiltonian if every path of length not exceeding $l$ is contained in a Hamiltonian cycle. It is well known that a 2-connected, $k$-regular graph $G$ on at most $3k-1$ vertices is edge-Hamiltonian if for every edge $uv$ of $G$, $\{u,v\}$ is not a cut-set. Thus $G$ is 1-path Hamiltonian if $G\setminus \{u,v\}$ is connected for every edge $uv$ of $G$. Let $P=uvz$ be a 2-path of a 2-connected, $k$-regular graph $G$ on at most $2k$ vertices. In this paper, we show that there is a Hamiltonian cycle containing the 2-path $P$ if $G\setminus V(P)$ is connected. Therefore, the work implies a condition for a 2-connected, $k$-regular graph to be 2-path Hamiltonian. An example shows that the $2k$ is almost sharp, i.e., the number is at most $2k+1$.

Application of Tikhonov Regularization in Generalized Inverse of Adjacency Matrix of Undirected Graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we found the Moore-Penrose generalized inverse of adjacency matrix of an undirected graph, explicitly. We proved that the matrix $R_λ= [r_{ij}]$ is nonsingular where $r_{ii}=\frac{1}λ+ °v_i$ and $r_{ij}=\mid N_G(V_i)\cap N_G(V_j)\mid$ for $i\neq j$, and we proved that $A^{\dagger}_G=[s_{ij}]_{1\leq i, j \leq n}$ where $\displaystyle{s_{ij}=s_{ji}=\lim_{λ\rightarrow +\infty} \langle R^{-1}_λe_j, f_i \rangle }$. The proof of the main result was based on the Tikhonov regularization.

Twin-width and Transductions of Proper k-Mixed-Thin Graphs
The new graph parameter twin-width, introduced by Bonnet, Kim, Thomass e and Watrigant in 2020, allows for an FPT algorithm for testing all FO properties of graphs. This makes classes of efficiently bounded twin-width attractive from the algorithmic point of view. In particular, classes of efficiently bounded twin-width include proper interval graphs, and (as digraphs) posets of width k. Inspired by an existing generalization of interval graphs into so-called k-thin graphs, we define a new class of proper k-mixed-thin graphs which largely generalizes proper interval graphs. We prove that proper k-mixed-thin graphs have twin-width linear in k, and that a slight subclass of k-mixed-thin graphs is transduction-equivalent to posets of width k' such that there is a quadratic-polynomial relation between k and k'. In addition to that, we also give an abstract overview of the so-called red potential method which we use to prove our twin-width bounds.

Automorphisms of Set Families and of Families of Cliques in an Interval Graph in FPT Time
We consider the following problem closely related to graph isomorphism. In a simplified version, the task is to compute the automorphism group of a given set family (or a hypergraph), that is, the group of all automorphisms of the given sets which are compatible with some permutation of their elements. In a general setting, the set family in question is a collection of cliques (called marked cliques) of a given interval graph, and the task is to compute the group of all permutations of the cliques which result from some automorpism of the underlying interval graph. This problem is obviously at least as hard as the graph isomorphism (GI-hard) already in the simplified version -- consider the set family of edges of a graph, and we give an FPT-time algorithm parameterized by the maximum number of sets in the family which are incomparable by inclusion (its antichain size). To our best knowledge, the general version of the problem has not been formulated in the literature so far. The problem has been inspired by the research of special cases of the isomorphism problem of chordal graphs; namely, the simplified set-family version is the core of our FPT algorithm for the isomorphism of so-called Sd-graphs [MFCS 2021], and the general version extends and improves a cumbersome technical step in our FPT algorithm for the isomorphism of chordal graphs of bounded leafage [WALCOM 2022]. The new algorithm combines two classical tools -- PQ-trees of interval graphs and Babai's tower-of-groups, in a nontrivial way.
