Finding large expanders in graphs: from topological minors to induced subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we consider a structural and geometric property of graphs, namely the presence of large expanders. The problem of finding such structures was first considered by Krivelevich [SIAM J. Disc. Math. 32 1 (2018)]. Here, we show that the problem of finding a large induced subgraph that is an expander can be reduced to the simpler problem of finding a topological minor that is an expander. Our proof is constructive, which is helpful in an algorithmic setting. We also show that every large subgraph of an expander graph contains a large subgraph which is itself an expander.

Rainbow paths and large rainbow matchings
Published • View PublicationBIB
A conjecture of the first two authors is that $n$ matchings of size $n$ in any graph have a rainbow matching of size $n-1$. We prove a lower bound of $\frac{2}{3}n-1$, improving on the trivial $\frac{1}{2}n$, and an analogous result for hypergraphs. For $\{C_3,C_5\}$-free graphs and for disjoint matchings we obtain a lower bound of $\frac{3n}{4}-O(1)$. We also discuss a conjecture on rainbow alternating paths, that if true would yield a lower bound of $n-\sqrt{2n}$. We prove the non-alternating (ordinary paths) version of this conjecture.

Decomposing a triangle-free planar graph into a forest and a subcubic forest
Published • View PublicationBIB
We strengthen a result of Dross, Montassier and Pinlou (2017) that the vertex set of every triangle-free planar graph can be decomposed into a set that induces a forest and a set that induces a forest with maximum degree at most $5$, showing that $5$ can be replaced by $3$.

On the Maximum Number of Edges in Hypergraphs with Fixed Matching and Clique Number
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a $k$-graph $\mathcal{F}\subset \binom{[n]}{k}$, the clique number of $\mathcal{F}$ is defined to be the maximum size of a subset $Q$ of $[n]$ with $\binom{Q}{k}\subset \mathcal{F}$. In the present paper, we determine the maximum number of edges in a $k$-graph on $[n]$ with matching number at most $s$ and clique number at least $q$ for $n\geq 8k^2s$ and for $q \geq (s+1)k-l$, $n\leq (s+1)k+s/(3k)-l$. Two special cases that $q=(s+1)k-2$ and $k=2$ are solved completely.

On the Real Roots of Domination Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
A dominating set $S$ of a graph $G$ of order $n$ is a subset of the vertices of $G$ such that every vertex is either in $S$ or adjacent to a vertex of $S$. The domination polynomial is defined by $D(G,x) = \sum d_k x^k$ where $d_k$ is the number of dominating sets in $G$ with cardinality $k$. In this paper we show that the closure of the real roots of domination polynomials is $(-\infty,0]$.

Kirchhoff's theorem for Prym varieties
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma (2022), Vol. 10:e11 1-54 • View PublicationBIB
We prove an analogue of Kirchhoff's matrix tree theorem for computing the volume of the tropical Prym variety for double covers of metric graphs. We interpret the formula in terms of a semi-canonical decomposition of the tropical Prym variety, via a careful study of the tropical Abel-Prym map. In particular, we show that the map is harmonic, determine its degree at every cell of the decomposition, and prove that its global degree is $2^{g-1}$. Along the way, we use the Ihara zeta function to provide a new proof of the analogous result for finite graphs. As a counterpart, the appendix by Sebastian Casalaina-Martin shows that the degree of the algebraic Abel-Prym map is $2^{g-1}$ as well.
Binomial edge ideals of small depth
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph on $[n]$ and $J_G$ be the binomial edge ideal of $G$ in the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n,y_1,\ldots,y_n]$. In this paper we investigate some topological properties of a poset associated to the minimal primary decomposition of $J_G$. We show that this poset admits some specific subposets which are contractible. This in turn, provides some interesting algebraic consequences. In particular, we characterize all graphs $G$ for which $\mathrm{depth}\hspace{1.2mm} S/J_G=4$.

On traceable iterated line graph and hamiltonian path index
Xiong and Liu [L. Xiong and Z. Liu, Hamiltonian iterated line graphs, Discrete Math. 256 (2002) 407-422] gave a characterization of the graphs $G$ for which the $n$-th iterated line graph $L^n(G)$ is hamiltonian, for $n\ge2$. In this paper, we study the existence of a hamiltonian path in $L^n(G)$, and give a characterization of $G$ for which $L^n(G)$ has a hamiltonian path. As applications, we use this characterization to give several upper bounds on the hamiltonian path index of a graph.

A Hoffman's Theorem: a revisit with new discovery
In 1972, A. J. Hoffman proved his celebrated theorem concerning the limit points of spectral radii of non-negative symmetric integral matrices less than $\sqrt{2+\sqrt{5}}$. In this paper, after giving a new version of Hoffman's theorem, we get two generalized versions of it applicable to non-negative symmetric matrices with fractional elements. As a corollary, we obtain another alternative version about the limit points of spectral radii of (signless) Laplacian matrices of graphs less than $2+ {\tiny \frac{{\;}1{\;}}{3}\left((54 - 6\sqrt{33})^{\frac{{\;}1{\;}}{3}} + (54 + 6\sqrt{33})^{\frac{{\;} 1{\;}}{3}} \right)}$. We also discuss how our approach could be fruitfully employed to investigate equiangular lines.

The graph energy game
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the graph energy from a cooperative game viewpoint. We introduce \emph{the graph energy game} and show various properties. In particular, we see that it is a superadditive game and that the energy of a vertex, as defined in Arizmendi and Juarez-Romero (2018), belongs to the core of the game. These properties imply new bounds for the energy of graphs. We also consider a version based on $p$-Schatten norms.

Almost all permutation matrices have bounded saturation functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Saturation problems for forbidden graphs have been a popular area of research for many decades, and recently Brualdi and Cao initiated the study of a saturation problem for 0-1 matrices. We say that 0-1 matrix $A$ is saturating for the forbidden 0-1 matrix $P$ if $A$ avoids $P$ but changing any zero to a one in $A$ creates a copy of $P$. Define $sat(n, P)$ to be the minimum possible number of ones in an $n \times n$ 0-1 matrix that is saturating for $P$. Fulek and Keszegh proved that for every 0-1 matrix $P$, either $sat(n, P) = O(1)$ or $sat(n, P) = Θ(n)$. They found two 0-1 matrices $P$ for which $sat(n, P) = O(1)$, as well as infinite families of 0-1 matrices $P$ for which $sat(n, P) = Θ(n)$. Their results imply that $sat(n, P) = Θ(n)$ for almost all $k \times k$ 0-1 matrices $P$. Fulek and Keszegh conjectured that there are many more 0-1 matrices $P$ such that $sat(n, P) = O(1)$ besides the ones they found, and they asked for a characterization of all permutation matrices $P$ such that $sat(n, P) = O(1)$. We affirm their conjecture by proving that almost all $k \times k$ permutation matrices $P$ have $sat(n, P) = O(1)$. We also make progress on the characterization problem, since our proof of the main result exhibits a family of permutation matrices with bounded saturation functions.

Automorphism groups of graphs of bounded Hadwiger number
Published in Advances in Combinatorics 2025:9, 39pp • View PublicationBIB
We determine the structure of automorphism groups of finite graphs of bounded Hadwiger number. Our proof includes a structural analysis of finite edge-transitive graphs. In particular, we show that for connected, $K_{h+1}$-minor-free, edge-transitive, twin-free, finite graphs the non-abelian composition factors of the automorphism group have bounded order. We use this to show that the automorphism groups of finite graphs of bounded Hadwiger number are obtained by repeated group extensions using abelian groups, symmetric groups and groups of bounded order.

A local injective proof of log-concavity for increasing spanning forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit combinatorial proof of a weighted version of strong log-concavity for the generating polynomial of increasing spanning forests of a finite simple graph equipped with a total ordering of the vertices. In contrast to similar proofs in the literature, our injection is local in the sense that it proceeds by moving a single edge from one forest to the other. In the particular case of the complete graph, this gives a new combinatorial proof of log-concavity of unsigned Stirling numbers of the first kind where a pair of permutations is transformed into a new pair by breaking a single cycle in the first permutation and gluing two cycles in the second permutation, while all the other spectator cycles are left untouched.

Trivial colors in colorings of Kneser graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that any proper coloring of a Kneser graph $KG_{n,k}$ with $n-2k+2$ colors contains a trivial color (i.e., a color consisting of sets that all contain a fixed element), provided $n>(2+\varepsilon)k^2$, where $\varepsilon\to 0$ as $k\to \infty$. This bound is essentially tight. This is a consequence of a more general result on the minimum number of non-trivial colors needed to properly color $KG_{n,k}$.

Gelfand $W$-graphs for classical Weyl groups
Published in J. Algebra 609 (2022), 292-336 • View PublicationBIB
A Gelfand model for an algebra is a module given by a direct sum of irreducible submodules, with every isomorphism class of irreducible modules represented exactly once. We introduce the notion of a perfect model for a finite Coxeter group, which is a certain set of discrete data (involving Rains and Vazirani's concept of a perfect involution) that parametrizes a Gelfand model for the associated Iwahori-Hecke algebra. We describe perfect models for all classical Weyl groups, excluding type D in even rank. The representations attached to these models simultaneously generalize constructions of Adin, Postnikov, and Roichman (from type A to other classical types) and of Araujo and Bratten (from group algebras to Iwahori-Hecke algebras). We show that each Gelfand model derived from a perfect model has a canonical basis that gives rise to a pair of related $W$-graphs, which we call Gelfand $W$-graphs. For types BC and D, we prove that these $W$-graphs are dual to each other, a phenomenon which does not occur in type A.

On WL-rank and WL-dimension of some Deza circulant graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The WL-rank of a digraph $Γ$ is defined to be the rank of the coherent configuration of $Γ$. The WL-dimension of $Γ$ is defined to be the smallest positive integer $m$ for which $Γ$ is identified by the $m$-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm. We classify the Deza circulant graphs of WL-rank $4$. In additional, it is proved that each of these graphs has WL-dimension at most $3$. Finally, we establish that some families of Deza circulant graphs have WL-rank $5$ or $6$ and WL-dimension at most $3$.
A note on connected greedy edge colouring
Published • View PublicationBIB
Following a given ordering of the edges of a graph $G$, the greedy edge colouring procedure assigns to each edge the smallest available colour. The minimum number of colours thus involved is the chromatic index $χ'(G)$, and the maximum is the so-called Grundy chromatic index. Here, we are interested in the restricted case where the ordering of the edges builds the graph in a connected fashion. Let $χ_c'(G)$ be the minimum number of colours involved following such an ordering. We show that it is NP-hard to determine whether $χ_c'(G)>χ'(G)$. We prove that $χ'(G)=χ_c'(G)$ if $G$ is bipartite, and that $χ_c'(G)\leq 4$ if $G$ is subcubic.

Strengthened chain theorems for different versions of 4-connectivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
The chain theorem of Tutte states that every 3-connected graph can be constructed from a wheel $W_n$ by repeatedly adding edges and splitting vertices. It is not difficult to prove the following strengthening of this theorem: every non-wheel 3-connected graph can be constructed from $W_4$ by repeatedly adding edges and splitting vertices. In this paper we similarly strengthen several chain theorems for various versions of 4-connectivity.

On the growth of the wallpaper groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop further Cannon's method of cone types for finding the growth function of a group, which can also be used to find the coordination sequences of certain infinite graphs. We then apply this method to compute the growth functions and series of the wallpaper groups (the 2 dimensional crystallographic groups). The paper has a number of illustrating colored figures and tables summarizing the results.
Inequalities of invariants on Stanley-Reisner rings of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The goal of the present paper is the study of some algebraic invariants of Stanley-Reisner rings of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes of dimension $d - 1$. We prove that the inequality $d \leq \mathrm{reg}(Δ) \cdot \mathrm{type}(Δ)$ holds for any $(d-1)$-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex $Δ$ satisfying $Δ=\mathrm{core}(Δ)$, where $\mathrm{reg}(Δ)$ (resp. $\mathrm{type}(Δ)$) denotes the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity (resp. Cohen-Macaulay type) of the Stanley-Reisner ring $\Bbbk[Δ]$. Moreover, for any given integers $d,r,t$ satisfying $r,t \geq 2$ and $r \leq d \leq rt$, we construct a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complex $Δ(G)$ as an independent complex of a graph $G$ such that $\dim(Δ(G))=d-1$, $\mathrm{reg}(Δ(G))=r$ and $\mathrm{type}(Δ(G))=t$.
