Impact of Some Graph Operations on Double Roman Domination Number
Given a graph $G=(V,E)$, a function $f:V\rightarrow \{0,1,2,3\}$ having the property that if $f(v)=0$, then there exist $ v_{1},v_{2}\in N(v)$ such that $f(v_{1})=f(v_{2})=2$ or there exists $ w \in N(v)$ such that $f(w)=3$, and if $f(v)=1$, then there exists $ w \in N(v)$ such that $f(w)\geq 2$ is called a double Roman dominating function (DRDF). The weight of a DRDF $f$ is the sum $f(V)=\sum_{v\in V}f(v)$. The double Roman domination number, $γ_{dR}(G)$, is the minimum among the weights of DRDFs on $G$. In this paper, we study the impact of some graph operations, such as cartesian product, addition of twins and corona with a graph, on double Roman domination number.
Vector-relation configurations and plabic graphs
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.), 30(1), #P9, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
We study a simple geometric model for local transformations of bipartite graphs. The state consists of a choice of a vector at each white vertex made in such a way that the vectors neighboring each black vertex satisfy a linear relation. Evolution for different choices of the graph coincides with many notable dynamical systems including the pentagram map, $Q$-nets, and discrete Darboux maps. On the other hand, for plabic graphs we prove unique extendability of a configuration from the boundary to the interior, an elegant illustration of the fact that Postnikov's boundary measurement map is invertible. In all cases there is a cluster algebra operating in the background, resolving the open question for $Q$-nets of whether such a structure exists.

An Omega(n^2) Lower Bound for Random Universal Sets for Planar Graphs
A set $U\subseteq \reals^2$ is $n$-universal if all $n$-vertex planar graphs have a planar straight-line embedding into $U$. We prove that if $Q \subseteq \reals^2$ consists of points chosen randomly and uniformly from the unit square then $Q$ must have cardinality $Ω(n^2)$ in order to be $n$-universal with high probability. This shows that the probabilistic method, at least in its basic form, cannot be used to establish an $o(n^2)$ upper bound on universal sets.

On the 486-vertex distance-regular graphs of Koolen--Riebeek and Soicher
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper considers three imprimitive distance-regular graphs with 486 vertices and diameter 4: the Koolen--Riebeek graph (which is bipartite), the Soicher graph (which is antipodal), and the incidence graph of a symmetric transversal design obtained from the affine geometry $\mathrm{AG}(5,3)$ (which is both). It is shown that each of these is preserved by the same rank-9 action of the group $3^5:(2\times M_{10})$, and the connection is explained using the ternary Golay code.
On the 2-colored crossing number
Let $D$ be a straight-line drawing of a graph. The rectilinear 2-colored crossing number of $D$ is the minimum number of crossings between edges of the same color, taken over all possible 2-colorings of the edges of $D$. First, we show lower and upper bounds on the rectilinear 2-colored crossing number for the complete graph $K_n$. To obtain this result, we prove that asymptotic bounds can be derived from optimal and near-optimal instances with few vertices. We obtain such instances using a combination of heuristics and integer programming. Second, for any fixed drawing of $K_n$, we improve the bound on the ratio between its rectilinear 2-colored crossing number and its rectilinear crossing number.
On the local structure of oriented graphs -- a case study in flag algebras
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 29 (2022), Issue 3, Article P3.39 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex oriented graph. Let $t(G)$ (respectively $i(G)$) be the probability that a random set of $3$ vertices of $G$ spans a transitive triangle (respectively an independent set). We prove that $t(G) + i(G) \geq \frac{1}{9}-o_n(1)$. Our proof uses the method of flag algebras that we supplement with several steps that make it more easily comprehensible. We also prove a stability result and an exact result. Namely, we describe an extremal construction, prove that it is essentially unique, and prove that if $H$ is sufficiently far from that construction, then $t(H) + i(H)$ is significantly larger than $\frac{1}{9}$. We go to greater technical detail than is usually done in papers that rely on flag algebras. Our hope is that as a result this text can serve others as a useful introduction to this powerful and beautiful method.

The general spectral radius and majorization theorem of $t$-cone graphs with given degree sequences
The general spectral radius of a graph $G$, denoted by $Θ(G,α)$, is the maximal eigenvalue of $M_α(G)=A(G)+αD(G)$ $(α\geq 0)$, where $A(G)$ and $D(G)$ are the adjacency matrix and the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees of $G$, respectively. A graph $G$ is called $Θ_α$-maximal in a class of connected simple graphs $\mathcal {G}$ if $Θ(G,α)$ is maximal among all graphs of $\mathcal {G}$. A $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graph is the join of a complete graph $K_t$ and a $c$-cyclic connected simple graph. Let $π=\big(d_1,d_2,\ldots,d_n\big)$ and $π'=\big(d'_1,d'_2,\ldots,d'_n\big)$ be two non-increasing degree sequences of $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graphs with $n$ vertices. We say $π$ is strictly majorized by $π'$, denoted by $π\lhd π'$, if $π\neq π'$, $\sum_{i=1}^n d_i=\sum_{i=1}^n d_i'$, and $\sum_{i=1}^k d_i\leq \sum_{i=1}^k d_i'$ for $k=1,2,\ldots,n-1$. Denote by $Γ(π,t;c)$ the class of $t$-cone $c$-cyclic graphs with $π$ as its degree sequence. In this paper, we determine some properties of $Θ_α$-maximal graphs of $Γ(π,t;c)$ and characterize the unique $Θ_α$-maximal graph of $Γ(π,t;0)$ \big(resp. $Γ(π,t;1)$ and $Γ(π,t;2)$\big). Moreover, we prove that if $π\lhd π'$, $G$ and $G'$ are the $Θ_α$-maximal graphs of $Γ(π,t;c)$ and $Γ(π',t;c)$ respectively, then $Θ(G,α)<Θ(G',α)$ for $c\in \big\{0,1\big\}$, and we also consider the similar result for $c=2$.

Finding Hamiltonian and Longest (s, t)-paths of C-shaped Supergrid Graphs in Linear Time
Published • View PublicationBIB
A supergrid graph is a finite vertex-induced subgraph of the infinite graph whose vertex set consists of all points of the plane with integer coordinates and in which two vertices are adjacent if the difference of their x or y coordinates is not larger than 1. The Hamiltonian path (cycle) problem is to determine whether a graph contains a simple path (cycle) in which each vertex of the graph appears exactly once. This problem is NP-complete for general graphs and it is also NP-complete for general supergrid graphs. Despite the many applications of the problem, it is still open for many classes, including solid supergrid graphs and supergrid graphs with some holes. A graph is called Hamiltonian connected if it contains a Hamiltonian path between any two distinct vertices. In this paper, first we will study the Hamiltonian cycle property of C-shaped supergrid graphs, which are a special case of rectangular supergrid graphs with a rectangular hole. Next, we will show that C-shaped supergrid graphs are Hamiltonian connected except few conditions. Finally, we will compute a longest path between two distinct vertices in these graphs. The Hamiltonian connectivity of C-shaped supergrid graphs can be applied to compute the optimal stitching trace of computer embroidery machines, and construct the minimum printing trace of 3D printers with a C-like component being printed.
The stable set problem in graphs with bounded genus and bounded odd cycle packing number
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the family of graphs without $ k $ node-disjoint odd cycles, where $ k $ is a constant. Determining the complexity of the stable set problem for such graphs $ G $ is a long-standing problem. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for the case that $ G $ can be further embedded in a (possibly non-orientable) surface of bounded genus. Moreover, we obtain polynomial-size extended formulations for the respective stable set polytopes. To this end, we show that $2$-sided odd cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property in graphs embedded in a fixed surface. This extends the fact that odd cycles satisfy the Erdős-Pósa property in graphs embedded in a fixed orientable surface (Kawarabayashi & Nakamoto, 2007). Eventually, our findings allow us to reduce the original problem to the problem of finding a minimum-cost non-negative integer circulation of a certain homology class, which turns out to be efficiently solvable in our case.

Quasirandom quantum channels
Published in Quantum 4, 298 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Mixing (or quasirandom) properties of the natural transition matrix associated to a graph can be quantified by its distance to the complete graph. Different mixing properties correspond to different norms to measure this distance. For dense graphs, two such properties known as spectral expansion and uniformity were shown to be equivalent in seminal 1989 work of Chung, Graham and Wilson. Recently, Conlon and Zhao extended this equivalence to the case of sparse vertex transitive graphs using the famous Grothendieck inequality. Here we generalize these results to the non-commutative, or `quantum', case, where a transition matrix becomes a quantum channel. In particular, we show that for irreducibly covariant quantum channels, expansion is equivalent to a natural analog of uniformity for graphs, generalizing the result of Conlon and Zhao. Moreover, we show that in these results, the non-commutative and commutative (resp.) Grothendieck inequalities yield the best-possible constants.
Multiset Dimensions of Trees
Let $G$ be a connected graph and $W$ be a set of vertices of $G$. The representation multiset of a vertex $v$ with respect to $W$, $r_m (v|W)$, is defined as a multiset of distances between $v$ and the vertices in $W$. If $r_m (u |W) \neq r_m(v|W)$ for every pair of distinct vertices $u$ and $v$, then $W$ is called an m-resolving set of $G$. If $G$ has an m-resolving set, then the cardinality of a smallest m-resolving set is called the multiset dimension of $G$, denoted by $md(G)$; otherwise, we say that $md(G) = \infty$. In this paper, we show that for a tree $T$ of diameter at least 2, if $md(T) < \infty$, then $md(T) \leq n-2$. We conjecture that this bound is not sharp in general and propose a sharp upper bound. We shall also provide necessary and sufficient conditions for caterpillars and lobsters having finite multiset dimension. Our results partially settled a conjecture and an open problem proposed in [4].

Sum-Essential Graphs of Modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
The sum-essential graph $ \mathcal{S}_R(M) $ of a left $R$-module $M$ is a graph whose vertices are all nontrivial submodules of $M$ and two distinct submodules are adjacent iff their sum is an essential submodule of $M$. Properties of the graph $\mathcal{S}_R(M)$ and its subgraph $\mathcal{P}_R(M)$ induced by vertices which are not essential as submodules of $M$ are investigated. The interplay between module properties of $M$ and properties of those graphs is studied.

Turán Problems for Vertex-disjoint Cliques in Multi-partite Hypergraphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
For two $s$-uniform hypergraphs $H$ and $F$, the Turán number $ex_s(H,F)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $F$-free subgraph of $H$. Let $s, r, k, n_1, \ldots, n_r$ be integers satisfying $2\leq s\leq r$ and $n_1\leq n_2\leq \cdots\leq n_r$. De Silva, Heysse and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}, kK_2)$ and De Silva, Heysse, Kapilow, Schenfisch and Young determined $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r},kK_r)$. In this paper, as a generalization of these results, we consider three Turán-type problems for $k$ disjoint cliques in $r$-partite $s$-uniform hypergraphs. First, we consider a multi-partite version of the Erdős matching conjecture and determine $ex_s(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}^{(s)},kK_s^{(s)})$ for $n_1\geq s^3k^2+sr$. Then, using a probabilistic argument, we determine $ex_s(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}^{(s)},kK_r^{(s)})$ for all $n_1\geq k$. Recently, Alon and Shikhelman determined asymptotically, for all $F$, the generalized Turán number $ex_2(K_n,K_s,F)$, which is the maximum number of copies of $K_s$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Here we determine $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}, K_s, kK_r)$ with $n_1\geq k$ and $n_3=\cdots=n_r$. Utilizing a result on rainbow matchings due to Glebov, Sudakov and Szabó, we determine $ex_2(K_{n_1, \ldots, n_r}, K_s, kK_r)$ for all $n_1, \ldots, n_r$ with $n_4\geq r^r(k-1)k^{2r-2}$.

A finitary structure theorem for vertex-transitive graphs of polynomial growth
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove a quantitative, finitary version of Trofimov's result that a connected, locally finite vertex-transitive graph G of polynomial growth admits a quotient with finite fibres on which the action of Aut(G) is virtually nilpotent with finite vertex stabilisers. We also present some applications. We show that a finite, connected vertex-transitive graph G of large diameter admits a quotient with fibres of small diameter on which the action of Aut(G) is virtually abelian with vertex stabilisers of bounded size. We also show that G has moderate growth in the sense of Diaconis and Saloff-Coste, which is known to imply that the mixing and relaxation times of the lazy random walk on G are quadratic in the diameter. These results extend results of Breuillard and the second author for finite Cayley graphs of large diameter. Finally, given a connected, locally finite vertex-transitive graph G exhibiting polynomial growth at a single, sufficiently large scale, we describe its growth at subsequent scales, extending a result of Tao and an earlier result of our own for Cayley graphs. In forthcoming work we will give further applications.

Minimum Coprime Labelings of Generalized Petersen and Prism Graphs
A coprime labeling of a graph of order $n$ is an assignment of distinct positive integer labels in which adjacent vertices have relatively prime labels. Restricting labels to only the set $1$ to $n$ results in a prime labeling. In this paper, we consider families of graphs in which a prime labeling cannot exist with the goal being to minimize the largest value of the labeling set, resulting in a minimum coprime labeling. In particular, prism graphs, generalized Petersen graphs with $k=2$, and stacked prism graphs are investigated for minimum coprime labelings.
Antimagic orientations of graphs with large maximum degree
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a digraph $D$ with $m $ arcs, a bijection $τ: A(D)\rightarrow \{1, 2, \ldots, m\}$ is an antimagic labeling of $D$ if no two vertices in $D$ have the same vertex-sum, where the vertex-sum of a vertex $u $ in $D$ under $τ$ is the sum of labels of all arcs entering $u$ minus the sum of labels of all arcs leaving $u$. We say $(D, τ)$ is an antimagic orientation of a graph $G$ if $D$ is an orientation of $G$ and $τ$ is an antimagic labeling of $D$. Motivated by the conjecture of Hartsfield and Ringel from 1990 on antimagic labelings of graphs, Hefetz, Mütze, and Schwartz in 2010 initiated the study of antimagic orientations of graphs, and conjectured that every connected graph admits an antimagic orientation. This conjecture seems hard, and few related results are known. However, it has been verified to be true for regular graphs and biregular bipartite graphs. In this paper, we prove that every connected graph $G$ on $n\ge9$ vertices with maximum degree at least $n-5$ admits an antimagic orientation.
On $(t,r)$ broadcast domination of certain grid graphs
Published in Involve 16 (2023) 883-903 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=( V(G), E(G) )$ be a connected graph with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$. We say a subset $D$ of $V(G)$ dominates $G$ if every vertex in $V \setminus D$ is adjacent to a vertex in $D$. A generalization of this concept is $(t,r)$ broadcast domination. We designate certain vertices to be towers of signal strength $t$, which send out signal to neighboring vertices with signal strength decaying linearly as the signal traverses the edges of the graph. We let $\mathbb{T}$ be the set of all towers, and we define the signal received by a vertex $v\in V(G)$ from a tower $w \in \mathbb T$ to be $f(v)=\sum_{w\in \mathbb{T}}max(0,t-d(v,w))$. Blessing, Insko, Johnson, Mauretour (2014) defined a $(t,r)$ broadcast dominating set, or a $(t,r) $ broadcast, on $G$ as a set $\mathbb{T} \subseteq V(G) $ such that $f(v)\geq r$ for all $v\in V(G)$. The minimal cardinality of a $(t, r)$ broadcast on $G$ is called the $(t, r)$ broadcast domination number of $G$. In this paper, we present our research on the $(t,r)$ broadcast domination number for certain graphs including paths, grid graphs, the slant lattice, and the king's lattice.
The Price of Connectivity in Fair Division
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, 36(2):1156-1186 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We study the allocation of indivisible goods that form an undirected graph and quantify the loss of fairness when we impose a constraint that each agent must receive a connected subgraph. Our focus is on well-studied fairness notions including envy-freeness and maximin share fairness. We introduce the price of connectivity to capture the largest gap between the graph-specific and the unconstrained maximin share, and derive bounds on this quantity which are tight for large classes of graphs in the case of two agents and for paths and stars in the general case. For instance, with two agents we show that for biconnected graphs it is possible to obtain at least $3/4$ of the maximin share with connected allocations, while for the remaining graphs the guarantee is at most $1/2$. In addition, we determine the optimal relaxation of envy-freeness that can be obtained with each graph for two agents, and characterize the set of trees and complete bipartite graphs that always admit an allocation satisfying envy-freeness up to one good (EF1) for three agents. Our work demonstrates several applications of graph-theoretic tools and concepts to fair division problems.

Planar cubic graphs of small diameter
Cubic planar $n$-vertex graphs with faces of length at most $6$, e.g., fullerene graphs, have diameter in $Ω(\sqrt{n})$. It has been suspected, that a similar result can be shown for cubic planar graphs with faces of bounded length. This note provides a family of cubic planar $n$-vertex graphs with faces of length at most $7$ and diameter in ${O}(\log n)$, thus refuting the above suspicion.
