Solutions monomiales minimales irréductibles dans $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Z}/p^{n}\mathbb{Z})$
In this article, we study the combinatorics of congruence subgroups of the modular group. More precisely, we consider the notion of minimal monomial solutions. These are the solutions of a matrix equation (also appearing in the study of Coxeter friezes), modulo an integer $N$, whose components are identical and minimal for this property. The objective here is to characterize the solutions of this type verifying a property of irreducibility modulo a prime power.

Diameter of the commutation classes graph of a permutation
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 103 (2022), 103525 • View PublicationBIB
We define a statistic on the graph of commutation classes of a permutation of the symmetric group which is used to show that these graphs are equipped with a ranked poset structure, with a minimum and maximum. This characterization also allows us to compute the diameter of the commutation graph for any permutation, from which the results for the longest permutation and for fully commutative permutations are recovered.

$q$-deformed rational numbers and the 2-Calabi--Yau category of type $A_2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe a family of compactifications of the space of Bridgeland stability conditions of any triangulated category following earlier work by Bapat, Deopurkar, and Licata. We particularly consider the case of the 2-Calabi--Yau category of the $A_2$ quiver. The compactification is the closure of an embedding (depending on $q$) of the stability space into an infinite-dimensional projective space. In the $A_2$ case, the three-strand braid group $B_3$ acts on this closure. We describe two distinguished braid group orbits in the boundary, points of which can be identified with certain rational functions in $q$. Points in one of the orbits are exactly the $q$-deformed rational numbers recently introduced by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko, while the other orbit gives a new $q$-deformation of the rational numbers. Specialising $q$ to a positive real number, we obtain a complete description of the boundary of the compactification.

Matchings in matroids over abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We formulate and prove matroid analogues of results concerning matchings in groups. A matching in an abelian group $(G,+)$ is a bijection $f:A\to B$ between two finite subsets $A,B$ of $G$ satisfying $a+f(a)\notin A$ for all $a\in A$. A group $G$ has the matching property if for every two finite subsets $A,B \subset G$ of the same size with $0 \notin B$, there exists a matching from $A$ to $B$. In [19] it was proved that an abelian group has the matching property if and only if it is torsion-free or cyclic of prime order. Here we consider a similar question in a matroid setting. We introduce an analogous notion of matching between matroids whose ground sets are subsets of an abelian group $G$, and we obtain criteria for the existence of such matchings. Our tools are classical theorems in matroid theory, group theory and additive number theory.

Beyond symmetry in generalized Petersen graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graph is a core or unretractive if all its endomorphisms are automorphisms. Well-known examples of cores include the Petersen graph and the graph of the dodecahedron -- both generalized Petersen graphs. We characterize the generalized Petersen graphs that are cores. A simple characterization of endomorphism-transitive generalized Petersen graphs follows. This extends the characterization of vertex-transitive generalized Petersen graphs due to Frucht, Graver, and Watkins and solves a problem of Fan and Xie. Moreover, we study generalized Petersen graphs that are (underlying graphs of) Cayley graphs of monoids. We show that this is the case for the Petersen graph, answering a recent mathoverflow question, for the Desargues graphs, and for the dodecahedron -- answering a question of Knauer and Knauer. Moreover, we characterize the infinite family of generalized Petersen graphs that are Cayley graph of a monoid with generating connection set of size two. This extends Nedela and Škoviera's characterization of generalized Petersen graphs that are group Cayley graphs and complements results of Hao, Gao, and Luo.
Algebraic Aspects of combined matrices
In this work, we present algebraic results concerning the combined matrices $\mathcal{C}(A)$, where the entries of $A$ belong to a number field $K$ and $A$ is a non-singular matrix. In other words, $A$ is a $n\times n$ matrix belonging to the General Linear Group over $K$, denoted by $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$. We also analyze the case in which matrix $A$ belongs to algebraic subgroups of $\mathrm{GL}_n(K)$, such as the unimodular group, where $A^2$ is a $n\times n$ matrix belonging to the Special Linear Group, denoted by $\mathrm{SL}_n(K)$, triangular groups, diagonal groups, among others. In particular, we thouroughly examine the cases $n=2$ and $n=3$ for symmetric and non-symmetric matrices, providing explicit diagonalization of $\mathcal{C}(A)$, which includes characteristic polynomials with their eigenvalues and eigenfactors.

Unitary matrix models, free fermion ensembles, and the giant graviton expansion
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a class of matrix integrals over the unitary group $U(N)$ with an infinite set of couplings characterized by a series $f(q)=\sum_{n \ge 1} a_n q^n$, with $a_n \in \mathbb{Z}$. Such integrals arise in physics as the partition functions of free four-dimensional gauge theories on $S^3$ and, in particular, as the superconformal index of super Yang-Mills theory. We show that any such model can be expressed in terms of a system of free fermions in an ensemble parameterized by the infinite set of couplings. Integrating out the fermions in a given quantum state leads to a convergent expansion as a series of determinants, as shown by Borodin-Okounkov many years ago. By further averaging over the ensemble, we obtain a formula for the matrix integral as a $q$-series with successive terms suppressed by $q^{αN + β}$ where $α$, $β$ do not depend on $N$. This provides a matrix-model explanation of the giant graviton expansion that has been observed recently in the literature.
Equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig theory of paving matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the way in which equivariant Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, equivariant inverse Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, and equivariant Z-polynomials of matroids change under the operation of relaxation of a collection of stressed hyperplanes. This allows us to compute these polynomials for arbitrary paving matroids, which we do in a number of examples, including various matroids associated with Steiner systems that admit actions of Mathieu groups.
Codes and Designs in Johnson Graphs From Symplectic Actions on Quadratic Forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Johnson graph $J(v, k)$ has as vertices the $k$-subsets of $\mathcal{V}=\{1,\ldots, v\}$, and two vertices are joined by an edge if their intersection has size $k-1$. An \emph{$X$-strongly incidence-transitive code} in $J (v, k)$ is a proper vertex subset $Γ$ such that the subgroup $X$ of graph automorphisms leaving $Γ$ invariant is transitive on the set $Γ$ of `codewords', and for each codeword $Δ$, the setwise stabiliser $X_Δ$ is transitive on $Δ\times (\mathcal{V}\setminus Δ)$. We classify the \emph{$X$-strongly incidence-transitive codes} in $J(v,k)$ for which $X$ is the symplectic group $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(2)$ acting as a $2$-transitive permutation group of degree $2^{2n-1}\pm 2^{n-1}$, where the stabiliser $X_Δ$ of a codeword $Δ$ is contained in a \emph{geometric} maximal subgroup of $X$. In particular, we construct two new infinite families of strongly incidence-transitive codes associated with the reducible maximal subgroups of $\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}(2)$.

Voltage operations on maniplexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Classical geometric and topological operations on polyhedra, maps and polytopes often give rise to structures with the same symmetry group as the original one, but with more flags. In this paper we introduce the notion of voltage operations on maniplexes, as a way to generalize such operations. Our technique provides a way to study classical operations in a graph theory setting. In fact, voltage operations can be applied to symmetry type graphs, and more generally to n-valent properly n-edge colored graphs. We focus on studying the interactions between voltage operations and the symmetries of the operated object, and show that they can be potentially used to build maniplexes with prescribed symmetry type graphs. Moreover, a complete characterization of when an operation can be seen as a voltage operation is given.

Weight polytopes and saturation of Demazure characters
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $G$ a reductive group and $T\subset B$ a maximal torus and Borel subgroup, Demazure modules are certain $B$-submodules, indexed by elements of the Weyl group, of the finite irreducible representations of $G$. In order to describe the $T$-weight spaces that appear in a Demazure module, we study the convex hull of these weights - the Demazure polytope. We characterize these polytopes both by vertices and by inequalities, and we use these results to prove that Demazure characters are saturated, in the case that $G$ is simple of classical Lie type. Specializing to $G=GL_n$, we recover results of Fink, Mészáros, and St. Dizier, and separately Fan and Guo, on key polynomials, originally conjectured by Monical, Tokcan, and Yong.

Central limit theorems for generalized descents and generalized inversions in finite root systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider generalized inversions and descents in finite Weyl groups. We establish Coxeter-theoretic properties of indicator random variables of positive roots such as the covariance of two such indicator random variables. We then compute the variances of generalized inversions and descents in classical types. We finally use the dependency graph method to prove central limit theorems for general antichains in root posets and in particular for generalized descents, and then for generalized inversions.

The word problem for free groups cannot be solved in linear time*
*by a standard (one-tape) Turing machine. It is well-known that the word problem for hyperbolic groups, whence in particular for free groups, can be solved in linear time. However, these algorithms run on machines more complicated than a standard Turing machine. By contrast, in this note we show that a standard Turing machine cannot solve the word problem for the free group on two generators in less than quadratic time.

Group testing via residuation and partial geometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
The motivation for this paper comes from the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic. Its goal is to present a previously neglected approach to non-adaptive group testing and describes it in terms of residuated pairs on partially ordered sets. Our investigation has the advantage, as it naturally yields an efficient decision scheme (decoder) for any given testing scheme. This decoder allows to detect a large amount of infection patterns. Apart from this, we devise a construction of good group testing schemes that are based on incidence matrices of finite partial linear spaces. The key idea is to exploit the structure of these matrices and make them available as test matrices for group testing. These matrices may generally be tailored for different estimated disease prevalence levels. As an example, we discuss the group testing schemes based on generalized quadrangles. In the context at hand, we state our results only for the error-free case so far. An extension to a noisy scenario is desirable and will be treated in a subsequent account on the topic.

Super-regular Steiner 2-designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A design is additive under an abelian group $G$ (briefly, $G$-additive) if, up to isomorphism, its point set is contained in $G$ and the elements of each block sum up to zero. The only known Steiner 2-designs that are $G$-additive for some $G$ have block size which is either a prime power or a prime power plus one. Indeed they are the point-line designs of the affine spaces $AG(n,q)$, the point-line designs of the projective planes $PG(2,q)$, and the point-line designs of the projective spaces $PG(n,2)$. In the attempt to find new examples, possibly with a block size which is neither a prime power nor a prime power plus one, we look for Steiner 2-designs which are strictly $G$-additive (the point set is exactly $G$) and $G$-regular (any translate of any block is a block as well) at the same time. These designs will be called\break "$G$-super-regular". Our main result is that there are infinitely many values of $v$ for which there exists a super-regular, and therefore additive, $2$-$(v,k,1)$ design whenever $k$ is neither singly even nor of the form $2^n3\geq12$. The case $k\equiv2$ (mod 4) is a definite exception whereas $k=2^n3\geq12$ is at the moment a possible exception. We also find super-regular $2$-$(p^n,p,1)$ designs with $p\in\{5,7\}$ and $n\geq3$ which are not isomorphic to the point-line design of $AG(n,p)$.

Perfect state transfer on bi-Cayley graphs over abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The study of perfect state transfer on graphs has attracted a great deal of attention during the past ten years because of its applications to quantum information processing and quantum computation. Perfect state transfer is understood to be a rare phenomenon. This paper establishes necessary and sufficient conditions for a bi-Cayley graph having perfect state transfer over any given finite abelian group. As corollaries, many known and new results are obtained on Cayley graphs having perfect state transfer over abelian groups, (generalized) dihedral groups, semi-dihedral groups and generalized quaternion groups. Especially, we give an example of a connected non-normal Cayley graph over a dihedral group having perfect state transfer between two distinct vertices, which was thought impossible.

A "power" conjugate equation in the symmetric group
First we consider the solutions of the general "cubic" equation a_{1}x^{r1}a_{2}x^{r2}a_{3}x^{r3}=1 (with r1,r2,r3 in {1,-1}) in the symmetric group S_{n}. In certain cases this equation can be rewritten as aya^{-1}=y^{2} or as aya^{-1}=y^{-2}, where a in S_{n} depends on the a_{i}'s and the new unknown permutation y in S_{n} is a product of x (or x^{-1}) and one of the permutations a_{i}^{1} and a_{i}^{-1}. Using combinatorial arguments and some basic number theoretical facts, we obtain results about the solutions of the so-called power conjugate equation aya^{-1}=y^{e} in S_{n}, where e is an integer exponent. Under certain conditions, the solutions are exactly the solutions of y^{e-1}=1 in the centralizer of a.

2D discrete Hodge-Dirac operator on the torus
Published in Symmetry 2022, 14(8), 1556 • View PublicationBIB
We discuss a discretisation of the de Rham-Hodge theory in the two-dimensional case based on a discrete exterior calculus framework. We present discrete analogues of the Hodge-Dirac and Laplace operators in which key geometric aspects of the continuum counterpart are captured. We provide and prove a discrete version of the Hodge decomposition theorem. Special attention has been paid to discrete models on a combinatorial torus. In this particular case, we also define and calculate the cohomology groups.
Degree 2 Boolean Functions on Grassmann Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the existence of Boolean degree $d$ functions on the Grassmann graph of $k$-spaces in the vector space $\mathbb{F}_q^n$. For $d=1$ several non-existence and classification results are known, and no non-trivial examples are known for $n \geq 5$. This paper focusses on providing a list of examples on the case $d=2$ in general dimension and in particular for $(n, k)=(6,3)$ and $(n,k) = (8, 4)$. We also discuss connections to the analysis of Boolean functions, regular sets/equitable bipartitions/perfect 2-colorings in graphs, $q$-analogs of designs, and permutation groups. In particular, this represents a natural generalization of Cameron-Liebler line classes.

Classifying the globally rigid edge-transitive graphs and distance-regular graphs in the plane
Published in Journal of Graph Theory (2022) • View PublicationBIB
A graph is said to be globally rigid if almost all embeddings of the graph's vertices in the Euclidean plane will define a system of edge-length equations with a unique (up to isometry) solution. In 2007, Jackson, Servatius and Servatius characterised exactly which vertex-transitive graphs are globally rigid solely by their degree and maximal clique number, two easily computable parameters for vertex-transitive graphs. In this short note we will extend this characterisation to all graphs that are determined by their automorphism group. We do this by characterising exactly which edge-transitive graphs and distance-regular graphs are globally rigid by their minimal and maximal degrees.
