Cluster Assignment in Multi-Agent Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study cluster assignment in multi-agent networks. We consider homogeneous diffusive networks, and focus on design of the graph that ensures the system will converge to a prescribed cluster configuration, i.e., specifying the number of clusters and agents within each cluster. Leveraging recent results from cluster synthesis, we show that it is possible to design an oriented graph such that the action of the automorphism group of the graph has orbits of predetermined sizes, guaranteeing that the network will converge to the prescribed cluster configuration. We provide upper and lower bounds on the number of edges that are needed to construct these graphs along with a constructive approach for generating these graphs. We support our analysis with some numerical examples.

Regularity and stable ranges of FI-modules
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give refined bounds for the regularity of FI-modules and the stable ranges of FI-modules for various forms of their stabilization studied in the representation stability literature. We show that our bounds are sharp in several cases. We apply these to get explicit stable ranges for diagonal coinvariant algebras, and improve those for ordered configuration spaces of manifolds and congruence subgroups of general linear groups.

Aldous' spectral gap property for normal Cayley graphs on symmetric groups
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 110 (2023) 103657 • View PublicationBIB
Aldous' spectral gap conjecture states that the second largest eigenvalue of any connected Cayley graph on the symmetric group Sn with respect to a set of transpositions is achieved by the standard representation of Sn. This celebrated conjecture, which was proved in its general form in 2010, has inspired much interest in searching for other families of Cayley graphs on Sn with the property that the largest eigenvalue strictly smaller than the degree is attained by the standard representation of Sn. In this paper, we prove three results on normal Cayley graphs on Sn possessing this property for sufficiently large n, one of which can be viewed as a generalization of the "normal" case of Aldous' spectral gap conjecture.

A cluster structure on the coordinate ring of partial flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The main goal of this paper is to show that the (multi-homogeneous) coordinate ring of a partial flag variety $\mathbb{C} [G / P_K^{-}]$ admits a cluster algebra structure if $G$ is any simply-connected semisimple complex algebraic group. We use derivation properties and a special lifting map to prove that the cluster algebra structure $\mathcal{A}$ of the coordinate ring $\mathbb{C}[N_K]$ of a Schubert cell constructed by Goodearl and Yakimov can be lifted, in an explicit way, to a cluster structure $\hat{\mathcal{A}}$ living in the coordinate ring of the corresponding partial flag variety. Then we use a minimality condition to prove that the cluster algebra $\hat{\mathcal{A}}$ is indeed equal to $\mathbb{C}[G / P_K^{-}]$.

The spectrum of the Grigoriev-Laurent pseudomoments
Published • View PublicationBIB
Grigoriev (2001) and Laurent (2003) independently showed that the sum-of-squares hierarchy of semidefinite programs does not exactly represent the hypercube $\{\pm 1\}^n$ until degree at least $n$ of the hierarchy. Laurent also observed that the pseudomoment matrices her proof constructs appear to have surprisingly simple and recursively structured spectra as $n$ increases. While several new proofs of the Grigoriev-Laurent lower bound have since appeared, Laurent's observations have remained unproved. We give yet another, representation-theoretic proof of the lower bound, which also yields exact formulae for the eigenvalues of the Grigoriev-Laurent pseudomoments. Using these, we prove and elaborate on Laurent's observations. Our arguments have two features that may be of independent interest. First, we show that the Grigoriev-Laurent pseudomoments are a special case of a Gram matrix construction of pseudomoments proposed by Bandeira and Kunisky (2020). Second, we find a new realization of the irreducible representations of the symmetric group corresponding to Young diagrams with two rows, as spaces of multivariate polynomials that are multiharmonic with respect to an equilateral simplex.

Computing equivalence classes of finite group actions on orientable surfaces: A dynamic survey
This paper focuses on the classification of classes of topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. By the Riemann-Hurwitz bound, there are just finitely many groups that act conformally on a closed orientable surface $\mathcal{S}_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. With each such action of a group $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ one can associate the fundamental group $Γ=π(\mathcal{O})$ of the quotient orbifold $\mathcal{O}=\mathcal{S}_g/\mathrm{G}$, isomorphic to a Fuchsian group determined completely by orbifold's signature. The Riemann existence theorem reduces the problem of the existence of an action of $\mathrm{G}$ on $\mathcal{S}_g$ to a purely group-theoretical problem of deciding whether there is an smooth epimorphism mapping the Fuchsian group $Γ$ onto the group $\mathrm{G}$. Using computer algebra systems such as \textsc{Magma} or GAP, together with the library of small groups, the generation of all finite group actions on a surface of fixed small genus $g\geq 2$ becomes almost a routine procedure. The difficult part is to determine the classes of these actions with respect to topological equivalence. To achieve this, one needs to investigate the action of the automorphism group of a Fuchsian group on the set of finite group actions on $\mathcal{S}_g$ with the corresponding signature. In this paper we derive several results on the topological equivalence of finite group actions on Riemann surfaces. As an application, we derive complete lists of finite group actions of genus $g\leq 9$ distinguished up to the topological equivalence. A summary of the actions can be found in Appendix, the reader interested in more details is referred to the web page [22]. It is expected that we will be able to extend the list to higher genera, refreshed partial results are available on the web page. The following text is an extended version of the paper [23].

Representations on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$
The moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$ of $n$ pointed stable curves of genus $0$ admits an action of the symmetric group $S_n$ by permuting the marked points. We provide a closed formula for the character of the $S_n$-action on the cohomology of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$. This is achieved by studying wall crossings of the moduli spaces of quasimaps which provide us with a new inductive construction of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}$, equivariant with respect to the symmetric group action. Moreover we prove that $H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$ for $k\le 3$ and $H^{2k}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})\oplus H^{2k-2}(\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n})$ for any $k$ are permutation representations. Our method works for related moduli spaces as well and we provide a closed formula for the character of the $S_n$-representation on the cohomology of the Fulton-MacPherson compactification $\mathbb{P}^1[n]$ of the configuration space of $n$ points on $\mathbb{P}^1$ and more generally on the cohomology of the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{0,n}(\mathbb{P}^{m-1},1)$ of stable maps.

Monotone cohomologies and oriented matchings
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we extend the definition of cohomology associated to monotone graph properties, to encompass twisted functor coefficients. We introduce oriented matchings on graphs, and focus on their (twisted) cohomology groups. We characterise oriented matchings in terms of induced free-flow pseudoforests, and explicitly determine the homotopy type of the associated simplicial complexes. Furthermore, we provide a connection between the cohomology of oriented matchings with certain functor coefficients, and the recently defined multipath cohomology. Finally, we define a further oriented homology for graphs and interpret it as a count of free-flow orientations.

Nowhere-zero 3-flows in Cayley graphs on supersolvable groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tutte's 3-flow conjecture asserts that every $4$-edge-connected graph admits a nowhere-zero $3$-flow. We prove that this conjecture is true for every Cayley graph of valency at least four on any supersolvable group with a noncyclic Sylow $2$-subgroup and every Cayley graph of valency at least four on any group whose derived subgroup is of square-free order.

Frames for Graph Signals on the Symmetric Group: A Representation Theoretic Approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
An important problem in the field of graph signal processing is developing appropriate overcomplete dictionaries for signals defined on different families of graphs. The Cayley graph of the symmetric group has natural applications in ranked data analysis, as its vertices represent permutations, while the generating set formalizes a notion of distance between rankings. Taking advantage of the rich theory of representations of the symmetric group, we study a particular class of frames, called Frobenius-Schur frames, where every atom belongs to the coefficient space of only one irreducible representation of the symmetric group. We provide a characterization for all Frobenius-Schur frames on the group algebra of the symmetric group which are "compatible" with respect to the generating set. Such frames have been previously studied for the permutahedron, the Cayley graph of the symmetric group with the generating set of adjacent transpositions, and have proved to be capable of producing meaningful interpretation of the ranked data set via the analysis coefficients. Our results generalize frame constructions for the permutahedron to any inverse-closed generating set.

The Completeness of 2D Rubik's Shapes
The Rubik's cube was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik, who had no idea of the incredible popularity and mathematical fascinations his toy would bring. Through the years of study on the mathematical properties of the cube, the Rubik's Cube group was introduced to represent all possible moves one could perform on the cube. In this paper, we define a planar analogue to the Rubik's cube, which we dub the Rubik's Square, and prove that the Rubik's square is complete in the sense that given any two configurations there is a sequence of moves which changes one to the other. The Rubik's cube does not have this property. We then abstract the concept of the Rubik's Square to a Rubik's Shape and analyse the completeness in this more general setting.

Product structure and regularity theorem for totally nonnegative flag varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The totally nonnegative flag variety was introduced by Lusztig. It has enriched combinatorial, geometric, and Lie-theoretic structures. In this paper, we introduce a (new) $J$-total positivity on the full flag variety of an arbitrary Kac-Moody group, generalizing the (ordinary) total positivity. We show that the $J$-totally nonnegative flag variety has a cellular decomposition into totally positive $J$-Richardson varieties. Moreover, each totally positive $J$-Richardson variety admits a favorable decomposition, called a product structure. Combined with the generalized Poincare conjecture, we prove that the closure of each totally positive $J$-Richardson variety is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball. Moreover, the $J$-total positivity on the full flag provides a model for the (ordinary) totally nonnegative partial flag variety. As a consequence, we prove that the closure of each (ordinary) totally positive Richardson variety is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, confirming conjectures of Galashin, Karp and Lam.

Classification of non-solvable groups whose power graph is a cograph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cameron, Manna and Mehatari investigated the question of which finite groups admit a power graph that is a cograph, also called power-cograph groups (Journal of Algebra 591 (2022)). They give a classification for nilpotent groups and partial results for general groups. However, the authors point out number theoretic obstacles towards a classification. These arise when the groups are assumed to be isomorphic to PSL 2 (q) or Sz(q) and are likely to be hard. In this paper, we prove that these number theoretic problems are in fact the only obstacles to the classification of non-solvable power-cograph groups. Specifically, for the non-solvable case, we give a classification of power-cograph groups in terms of such groups isomorphic to PSL 2 (q) or Sz(q). For the solvable case, we are able to precisely describe the structure of solvable power-cograph groups. We obtain a complete classification of solvable power-cograph groups whose Gruenberg-Kegel graph is connected. Moreover, we reduce the case where the Gruenberg-Kegel graph is disconnected to the classification of p-groups admitting fixed-point-free automorphisms of prime power order, which is in general an open problem.
Measurable tilings by abelian group actions
Let $X$ be a measure space with a measure-preserving action $(g,x) \mapsto g \cdot x$ of an abelian group $G$. We consider the problem of understanding the structure of measurable tilings $F \odot A = X$ of $X$ by a measurable tile $A \subset X$ translated by a finite set $F \subset G$ of shifts, thus the translates $f \cdot A$, $f \in F$ partition $X$ up to null sets. Adapting arguments from previous literature, we establish a "dilation lemma" that asserts, roughly speaking, that $F \odot A = X$ implies $F^r \odot A = X$ for a large family of integer dilations $r$, and use this to establish a structure theorem for such tilings analogous to that established recently by the second and fourth authors. As applications of this theorem, we completely classify those random tilings of finitely generated abelian groups that are "factors of iid", and show that measurable tilings of a torus $\mathbb{T}^d$ can always be continuously (in fact linearly) deformed into a tiling with rational shifts, with particularly strong results in the low-dimensional cases $d=1,2$ (in particular resolving a conjecture of Conley, the first author, and Pikhurko in the $d=1$ case).

Quaternionic $1-$factorizations and complete sets of rainbow spanning trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $1-$factorization of a complete graph on $2n$ vertices is said to be $G-$regular if it posseses an automorphism group $G$ acting sharply transitively on the vertex-set. The problem of determining which groups can realize such a situation dates back to a result by Hartman and Rosa (1985) on cyclic groups and, when $n$ is even, the problem is still open. An attempt to obtain a fairly precise description of groups and $1-$factorizations satisfying this symmetry constrain can be done by imposing further conditions. It was recently proved, see Rinaldi (2021) and Mazzuoccolo et al. (2019), that a $G-$regular $1-$factorization together with a complete set of rainbow spanning trees exists whenever $n$ is odd, while the existence for each $n$ even was proved when either $G$ is cyclic and $n$ is not a power of $2$, or when $G$ is a dihedral group. In this paper we extend this result and prove the existence also for other classes of groups.
Kleinian sphere packings, reflection groups, and arithmeticity
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study crystallographic sphere packings and Kleinian sphere packings, introduced first by Kontorovich and Nakamura in 2017 and then studied further by Kapovich and Kontorovich in 2021. In particular, we solve the problem of existence of crystallographic sphere packings in certain higher dimensions posed by Kontorovich and Nakamura. In addition, we present a geometric doubling procedure allowing to obtain sphere packings from some Coxeter polyhedra without isolated roots, and study "properly integral" packings (that is, ones which are integral but not superintegral). Our techniques rely extensively on computations with Lorentzian quadratic forms, their orthogonal groups, and associated higher-dimensional hyperbolic polyhedra.

Embedding K3,3 and K5 on the Double Torus
The Kuratowski graphs $K_{3,3}$ and $K_5$ characterize planarity. Counting distinct 2-cell embeddings of these two graphs on orientable surfaces was previously done by using Burnside's Lemma and their automorphism groups, without actually constructing the embeddings. We obtain all 2-cell embeddings of these graphs on the double torus, using a constructive approach. This shows that there is a unique non-orientable 2-cell embedding of $K_{3,3}$, 14 orientable and 17 non-orientable 2-cell embeddings of $K_5$ on the double torus, which explicitly confirms the enumerative results. As a consequence, several new polygonal representations of the double torus are presented.

The intermediate orders of a Coxeter group
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a class of partial orders on a Coxeter group associated with sets of reflections. In special cases, these lie between the left weak order and the Bruhat order. We prove that these posets are graded by the length function and that the projections on the right parabolic quotients are always order preserving. We also introduce the notion of $k$-Bruhat graph, $k$-absolute length and $k$-absolute order, proposing some related conjectures and problems.

Orientation of alcoves in affine Weyl groups
Let $W$ be an irreducible Weyl group and $W_a$ its affine Weyl group. In a previous work the author introduced an affine variety $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$, called the Shi variety of $W_a$, whose integral points are in bijection with $W_a$. The set of irreducible components of $\widehat{X}_{W_a}$ provided results at the intersection of group theory, combinatorics and geometry. In this article we express the notion of orientation of alcoves in terms of the first group of cohomogoly of $W$ and in terms of the irreducible components of the Shi variety. We also provide modular equations in terms of Shi coefficients that describe efficiently the property of having the same orientation.

On the homotopy decomposition for the quotient of a moment-angle complex and its applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we prove that the quotient of any real or complex moment-angle complex by any closed subgroup in the naturally acting compact torus on it is equivariantly homotopy equivalent to the homotopy colimit of a certain toric diagram. For any quotient we prove an equivariant homeomorphism generalizing the well-known Davis-Januszkiewicz construction for quasitoric manifolds and small covers. We deduce formality of the corresponding Borel construction space under the natural assumption on the group action in the complex case leading to the new description of the equivariant cohomology for the quotients by any coordinate subgroups. We prove the weak Toral Rank Conjecture for any partial quotient by the diagonal circle action. We give an explicit construction of partial quotients by circle actions having arbitrary torsion in integral cohomology.
