Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $M$ be an $R$-module, and let $Z(M)$ be the set of all zero-divisors on $M$. In 2008, D.F. Anderson and A. Badawi introduced the regular graph of $R$. In this paper, we generalize the regular graph of $R$ to the \textit{$M$-regular graph} of $R$, denoted by $M$-$Reg(Γ(R))$. It is the undirected graph with all $M$-regular elements of $R$ as vertices, and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $x+y\in Z(M)$. The basic properties and possible structures of the $M$-$Reg(Γ(R))$ are studied. We determine the girth of the $M$-regular graph of $R$. Also, we provide some lower bounds for the independence number and the clique number of the $M$-$Reg(Γ(R))$. Among other results, we prove that for every Noetherian ring $R$ and every finitely generated module $M$ over $R$, if $2\notin Z(M)$ and the independence number of the $M$-$Reg(Γ(R))$ is finite, then $R$ is finite.

This paper studies the on-line choice number on complete multipartite graphs with independence number $m$. We give a unified strategy for every prescribed $m$. Our main result leads to several interesting consequences comparable to known results. (1) If $ k_1-\sum_{p=2}^m(\frac{p^2}{2}-\frac{3p}{2}+1)k_p\geq 0$, where $k_p$ denotes the number of parts of cardinality $p$, then $G$ is on-line chromatic-choosable. (2) If $ |V(G)|\leq\frac{m^2-m+2}{m^2-3m+4}χ(G)$, then $G$ is on-line chromatic-choosable. (3) The on-line choice number of regular complete multipartite graphs $K_{m\star k}$ is at most $(m+\frac{1}{2}-\sqrt{2m-2})k$ for $m\geq 3$.

Let $f(n)$ be a function and $L$ be a graph. Denote by $RT(n,L,f(n))$ the maximum number of edges of an $L$-free graph on $n$ vertices with independence number less than $f(n)$. Erd\H os and Sós asked if $RT\left(n, K_5, c\sqrt{n}\right) = o(n^2)$ for some constant $c$. We answer this question by proving the stronger $RT\left(n, K_5, o\left(\sqrt{n\log n}\right)\right) = o(n^2)$. It is known that $RT \left(n, K_5, c \sqrt{n\log n} \right) = n^2/4+o(n^2)$ for $c>1$, so one can say that $K_5$ has a Ramsey-Turán phase transition at $c\sqrt{n\log n}$. We extend this result to several other $K_s$'s and functions $f(n)$, determining many more phase transitions. We shall formulate several open problems, in particular, whether variants of the Bollobás-Erd\H os graph exist to give good lower bounds on $RT\left(n, K_s, f(n)\right)$ for various pairs of $s$ and $f(n)$. Among others, we use Szemerédi's Regularity Lemma and the Hypergraph Dependent Random Choice Lemma. We also present a short proof of the fact that $K_s$-free graphs with small independence number are sparse.
The triangle-free process and the Ramsey number $R(3,k)$
The areas of Ramsey theory and random graphs have been closely linked ever since Erdős' famous proof in 1947 that the 'diagonal' Ramsey numbers $R(k)$ grow exponentially in $k$. In the early 1990s, the triangle-free process was introduced as a model which might potentially provide good lower bounds for the 'off-diagonal' Ramsey numbers $R(3,k)$. In this model, edges of $K_n$ are introduced one-by-one at random and added to the graph if they do not create a triangle; the resulting final (random) graph is denoted $G_{n,\triangle}$. In 2009, Bohman succeeded in following this process for a positive fraction of its duration, and thus obtained a second proof of Kim's celebrated result that $R(3,k) = Θ\big( k^2 / \log k \big)$.
In this paper we improve the results of both Bohman and Kim, and follow the triangle-free process all the way to its asymptotic end. In particular, we shall prove that $$e\big( G_{n,\triangle} \big) \,=\, \left( \frac{1}{2\sqrt{2}} + o(1) \right) n^{3/2} \sqrt{\log n },$$ with high probability as $n \to \infty$. We also obtain several pseudorandom properties of $G_{n,\triangle}$, and use them to bound its independence number, which gives as an immediate corollary $$R(3,k) \, \ge \, \left( \frac{1}{4} - o(1) \right) \frac{k^2}{\log k}.$$ This significantly improves Kim's lower bound, and is within a factor of $4 + o(1)$ of the best known upper bound, proved by Shearer over 25 years ago.

The triangle-free process begins with an empty graph on n vertices and iteratively adds edges chosen uniformly at random subject to the constraint that no triangle is formed. We determine the asymptotic number of edges in the maximal triangle-free graph at which the triangle-free process terminates. We also bound the independence number of this graph, which gives an improved lower bound on the Ramsey numbers R(3,t): we show R(3,t) > (1-o(1)) t^2 / (4 log t), which is within a 4+o(1) factor of the best known upper bound. Our improvement on previous analyses of this process exploits the self-correcting nature of key statistics of the process. Furthermore, we determine which bounded size subgraphs are likely to appear in the maximal triangle-free graph produced by the triangle-free process: they are precisely those triangle-free graphs with density at most 2.
Independent sets of some graphs associated to commutative rings
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph. A set $S\subseteq V$ is independent set of $G$, if no two vertices of $S$ are adjacent. The independence number $α(G)$ is the size of a maximum independent set in the graph. %An independent set with cardinality Let $R$ be a commutative ring with nonzero identity and $I$ an ideal of $R$. The zero-divisor graph of $R$, denoted by $Γ(R)$, is an undirected graph whose vertices are the nonzero zero-divisors of $R$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $xy = 0$. Also the ideal-based zero-divisor graph of $R$, denoted by $Γ_I(R)$, is the graph which vertices are the set ${x\in R\backslash I | xy\in I \quad for some \quad y\in R\backslash I\}$ and two distinct vertices $x$ and $y$ are adjacent if and only if $xy \in I$. In this paper we study the independent sets and the independence number of $Γ(R)$ and $Γ_I(R)$.
Graph Products Revisited: Tight Approximation Hardness of Induced Matching, Poset Dimension and More

Graph product is a fundamental tool with rich applications in both graph theory and theoretical computer science. It is usually studied in the form $f(G*H)$ where $G$ and $H$ are graphs, * is a graph product and $f$ is a graph property. For example, if $f$ is the independence number and * is the disjunctive product, then the product is known to be multiplicative: $f(G*H)=f(G)f(H)$.
In this paper, we study graph products in the following non-standard form: $f((G\oplus H)*J)$ where $G$, $H$ and $J$ are graphs, $\oplus$ and * are two different graph products and $f$ is a graph property. We show that if $f$ is the induced and semi-induced matching number, then for some products $\oplus$ and *, it is subadditive in the sense that $f((G\oplus H)*J)\leq f(G*J)+f(H*J)$. Moreover, when $f$ is the poset dimension number, it is almost subadditive.
As applications of this result (we only need $J=K_2$ here), we obtain tight hardness of approximation for various problems in discrete mathematics and computer science: bipartite induced and semi-induced matching (a.k.a. maximum expanding sequences), poset dimension, maximum feasible subsystem with 0/1 coefficients, unit-demand min-buying and single-minded pricing, donation center location, boxicity, cubicity, threshold dimension and independent packing.

We describe a construction that maps any connected graph G on three or more vertices into a larger graph, H(G), whose independence number is strictly smaller than its Lovász number which is equal to its fractional packing number. The vertices of H(G) represent all possible events consistent with the stabilizer group of the graph state associated with G, and exclusive events are adjacent. Mathematically, the graph H(G) corresponds to the orbit of G under local complementation. Physically, the construction translates into graph-theoretic terms the connection between a graph state and a Bell inequality maximally violated by quantum mechanics. In the context of zero-error information theory, the construction suggests a protocol achieving the maximum rate of entanglement-assisted capacity, a quantum mechanical analogue of the Shannon capacity, for each H(G). The violation of the Bell inequality is expressed by the one-shot version of this capacity being strictly larger than the independence number. Finally, given the correspondence between graphs and exclusivity structures, we are able to compute the independence number for certain infinite families of graphs with the use of quantum non-locality, therefore highlighting an application of quantum theory in the proof of a purely combinatorial statement.
$δ_k$-small sets in graphs
Let $G$ be a simple $n$-vertex graph and $W\subseteq\V(G)$. We say that $W$ is a $δ_k$-small set if $$ \sqrt[k]{\frac{\sum_{v\in W}d^k(v)}{\abs W}}\leq n-\abs W. $$ Let $\varphi^{(k)}(G)$ denote the smallest natural number $r$ such that $\V(G)$ decomposes into $r$ $δ_k$-small sets, and let $α^{(k)}(G)$ denote the maximal number of vertices in a $δ_k$-small set of $G$. In this paper we obtain bounds for $α^{(k)}(G)$ and $\varphi^{(k)}(G)$. Since $\varphi^{(k)}(G)\leqω(G)\leqχ(G)$ and $α(G)\leqα^{(k)}(G)$, we obtain also bounds for the clique number $ω(G)$, the chromatic number $χ(G)$ and the independence number $α(G)$.

A blocking quadruple (BQ) is a quadruple of vertices of a graph such that any two vertices of the quadruple either miss (have no neighbours on) some path connecting the remaining two vertices of the quadruple, or are connected by some path missed by the remaining two vertices. This is akin to the notion of asteroidal triple used in the classical characterization of interval graphs by Lekkerkerker and Boland. We show that a circular-arc graph cannot have a blocking quadruple. We also observe that the absence of blocking quadruples is not in general sufficient to guarantee that a graph is a circular-arc graph. Nonetheless, it can be shown to be sufficient for some special classes of graphs, such as those investigated by Bonomo et al. In this note, we focus on chordal graphs, and study the relationship between the structure of chordal graphs and the presence/absence of blocking quadruples. Our contribution is two-fold. Firstly, we provide a forbidden induced subgraph characterization of chordal graphs without blocking quadruples. In particular, we observe that all the forbidden subgraphs are variants of the subgraphs forbidden for interval graphs. Secondly, we show that the absence of blocking quadruples is sufficient to guarantee that a chordal graph with no independent set of size five is a circular-arc graph. In our proof we use a novel geometric approach, constructing a circular-arc representation by traversing around a carefully chosen clique tree.
Degree Sequence Index Strategy
We introduce a procedure, called the Degree Sequence Index Strategy (DSI), by which to bound graph invariants by certain indices in the ordered degree sequence. As an illustration of the DSI strategy, we show how it can be used to give new upper and lower bounds on the $k$-independence and the $k$-domination numbers. These include, among other things, a double generalization of the annihilation number, a recently introduced upper bound on the independence number. Next, we use the DSI strategy in conjunction with planarity, to generalize some results of Caro and Roddity about independence number in planar graphs. Lastly, for claw-free and $K_{1,r}$-free graphs, we use DSI to generalize some results of Faudree, Gould, Jacobson, Lesniak and Lindquester.
On the spectral moment of trees with given degree sequences
Let $A(G)$ be the adjacency matrix of graph $G$ with eigenvalues $λ_1(G), λ_2(G),..., λ_n(G)$ in non-increasing order. The number $S_k(G):=\sum_{i=1}^{n}λ_i^{k}(G)\, (k=0, 1,..., n-1)$ is called the $k$th spectral moment of $G$. Let $S(G) = (S_0(G), S_1(G),..., S_{n-1}(G))$ be the sequence of spectral moments of $G.$ For two graphs $G_1, G_2$, we have $G_1\prec_{s}G_2$ if for some $k \in \{1,2,3,...,n-1\}$, we have $S_i(G_1) = S_i(G_2)\, ,\, i = 0, 1,..., k-1$ and $S_k(G_1)<S_k(G_2).$ In this paper, the last $n$-vertex tree with a given degree sequence in an $S$-order is determined. Consequently, we also obtain the last trees in an $S$-order in the sets of all trees of order $n$ with the largest degree, the leaves number, the independence number and the matching number, respectively.

Let $G = (V,E)$ be a graph and $k \ge 0$ an integer. A $k$-independent set $S \subseteq V$ is a set of vertices such that the maximum degree in the graph induced by $S$ is at most $k$. With $α_k(G)$ we denote the maximum cardinality of a $k$-independent set of $G$. We prove that, for a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices and average degree $d$, $α_k(G) \ge \frac{k+1}{\lceil d \rceil + k + 1} n$, improving the hitherto best general lower bound due to Caro and Tuza [Improved lower bounds on k-independence, J. Graph Theory 15 (1991), 99-107].

The first application of Szemerédi's powerful regularity method was the following celebrated Ramsey-Turán result proved by Szemerédi in 1972: any K_4-free graph on N vertices with independence number o(N) has at most (1/8 + o(1)) N^2 edges. Four years later, Bollobás and Erdős gave a surprising geometric construction, utilizing the isoperimetric inequality for the high dimensional sphere, of a K_4-free graph on N vertices with independence number o(N) and (1/8 - o(1)) N^2 edges. Starting with Bollobás and Erdős in 1976, several problems have been asked on estimating the minimum possible independence number in the critical window, when the number of edges is about N^2 / 8. These problems have received considerable attention and remained one of the main open problems in this area. In this paper, we give nearly best-possible bounds, solving the various open problems concerning this critical window.
Counting colorings of a regular graph

At most how many (proper) q-colorings does a regular graph admit? Galvin and Tetali conjectured that among all n-vertex, d-regular graphs with 2d|n, none admits more q-colorings than the disjoint union of n/2d copies of the complete bipartite graph K_{d,d}. In this note we give asymptotic evidence for this conjecture, giving an upper bound on the number of proper q-colorings admitted by an n-vertex, d-regular graph of the form a^n b^{n(1+o(1))/d} (where a and b depend on q and where o(1) goes to 0 as d goes to infinity) that agrees up to the o(1) term with the count of q-colorings of n/2d copies of K_{d,d}.
An auxiliary result is an upper bound on the number of colorings of a regular graph in terms of its independence number. For example, we show that for all even q and fixed ε> 0 there is δ=δ(ε,q) such that the number of proper q-colorings admitted by an n-vertex, d-regular graph with no independent set of size n(1-ε)/2 is at most (a-δ)^n.

Let $G$ be a graph on $n$ vertices. We call a subset $A$ of the vertex set $V(G)$ \emph{$k$-small} if, for every vertex $v \in A$, $°(v) \le n - |A| + k$. A subset $B \subseteq V(G)$ is called \emph{$k$-large} if, for every vertex $u \in B$, $°(u) \ge |B| - k - 1$. Moreover, we denote by $\varphi_k(G)$ the minimum integer $t$ such that there is a partition of $V(G)$ into $t$ $k$-small sets, and by $Ω_k(G)$ the minimum integer $t$ such that there is a partition of $V(G)$ into $t$ $k$-large sets. In this paper, we will show tight connections between $k$-small sets, respectively $k$-large sets, and the $k$-independence number, the clique number and the chromatic number of a graph. We shall develop greedy algorithms to compute in linear time both $\varphi_k(G)$ and $Ω_k(G)$ and prove various sharp inequalities concerning these parameters, which we will use to obtain refinements of the Caro-Wei Theorem, the Turán Theorem and the Hansen-Zheng Theorem among other things.

A graph is well-covered if every maximal independent set has the same cardinality, namely the vertex independence number. We answer a question of Topp and Volkmann and prove that if the Cartesian product of two graphs is well-covered, then at least one of them must be well-covered.

Let $G$ be an edge-colored connected graph. A path of $G$ is called rainbow if its every edge is colored by a distinct color. $G$ is called rainbow connected if there exists a rainbow path between every two vertices of $G$. The minimum number of colors that are needed to make $G$ rainbow connected is called the rainbow connection number of $G$, denoted by $rc(G)$. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the rainbow connection number and the independence number of a graph. We show that if $G$ is a connected graph, then $rc(G)\leq 2α(G)-1$. Two examples $G$ are given to show that the upper bound $2α(G)-1$ is equal to the diameter of $G$, and therefore the best possible since the diameter is a lower bound of $rc(G)$.

Erdos asked in 1962 about the value of f(n,k,l), the minimum number of k-cliques in a graph of order n and independence number less than l. The case (k,l)=(3,3) was solved by Lorden. Here we solve the problem (for all large n) when (k,l) is (3,4), (3,5), (3,6), (3,7), (4,3), (5,3), (6,3), and (7,3). Independently, Das, Huang, Ma, Naves, and Sudakov did the cases (k,l)=(3,4) and (4,3).

A fullerene graph is a cubic bridgeless plane graph with all faces of size 5 and 6. We show that that every fullerene graph on n vertices can be made bipartite by deleting at most sqrt{12n/5} edges, and has an independent set with at least n/2-sqrt{3n/5} vertices. Both bounds are sharp, and we characterise the extremal graphs. This proves conjectures of Doslic and Vukicevic, and of Daugherty. We deduce two further conjectures on the independence number of fullerene graphs, as well as a new upper bound on the smallest eigenvalue of a fullerene graph.
