Contact flexibility and rigidity for toric Gorenstein prequantizations and Ehrhart theory of toric diagrams
Gorenstein toric contact manifolds are good toric contact manifolds with zero first Chern class that are completely determined by certain integral convex polytopes called toric diagrams. The Ehrhart polynomial of these toric diagrams determines and is determined by the contact Betti numbers of the corresponding contact manifolds, i.e. the dimension of their cylindrical contact homology in eachdegree. In this paper we look into the following natural question: to what extent do these contact invariants determine the Gorenstein toric contact manifold? Flexibility is the norm and we illustrate it with the family of Gorenstein toric contact manifolds that arise as the prequantization of monotone iterated ${\mathbb P}^1$-bundles, i.e. monotone Bott manifolds. In each dimension, the Ehrhart polynomial of their toric diagrams is equal to the Ehrhart polynomial of the cross-polytope, corresponding to the monotone prequantization of ${\mathbb P}^1 \times \cdots \times {\mathbb P}^1$, and we describe the unimodular classification of these toric diagrams. On the rigidity side, we will show that the primitive prequantization of ${\mathbb P}^1 \times \cdots \times {\mathbb P}^1$ is rigid, i.e. completely determined as a Gorenstein toric contact manifold by its contact Betti numbers. More precisely, in each dimension, we show that its toric diagram, which we name small cross-polytope, is the unique toric diagram with its particular Ehrhart polynomial. We will also prove a rigidity result for a family of Gorenstein toric contact manifolds that arise as the primitive prequantization of monotone ${\mathbb P}^1$-bundles over ${\mathbb P}^{n-1}$.
Toric surface codes and the periodicity of polytopes
Toric codes are error-correcting codes that are derived from toric varieties, which hold a unique correspondence to integral convex polytopes. In this paper, we focus on integral convex polytopes $P \subseteq \mathbb{R}^2$ and the toric codes they define. We begin by studying period-1 polytopes -- polytopes satisfying the property $L(tP)$ = $tL(P)$ for all $t \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, where $tP$ is the $t$-dilate of $P$, and we prove an explicit formula for the minimum distance of toric codes associated to a particular class of period-1 polytopes. We also apply the methods of Little and Schwarz, using Vandermonde matrices, to compute the minimum distance of another class of period-1 polytopes.

Facets and volume of Gorenstein Fano polytopes
Published in Mathematische Nachrichten 290 (2017) 2619-2628 • View PublicationBIB
It is known that every integral convex polytope is unimodularly equivalent to a face of some Gorenstein Fano polytope. It is then reasonable to ask whether every normal polytope is unimodularly equivalent to a face of some normal Gorenstein Fano polytope. In the present paper, it is shown that, by giving new classes of normal Gorenstein Fano polytopes, each order polytope as well as each chain polytope of dimension $d$ is unimodularly equivalent to a facet of some normal Gorenstein Fano polytopes of dimension $d + 1$. Furthermore, investigation on combinatorial properties, especially, Ehrhart polynomials and volume of these new polytopes will be achieved. Finally, some curious examples of Gorenstein Fano polytopes will be discovered.

Flat $δ$-vectors and their Ehrhart polynomials
Published in Arch. Math. (Basel) 108(2017), 151--157 • View PublicationBIB
We call the $δ$-vector of an integral convex polytope of dimension $d$ flat if the $δ$-vector is of the form $(1,0,\ldots,0,a,\ldots,a,0,\ldots,0)$, where $a \geq 1$. In this paper, we give the complete characterization of possible flat $δ$-vectors. Moreover, for an integral convex polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ of dimension $d$, we let $i(\mathcal{P},n)=|n\mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{Z}^N|$ and $\ i^*(\mathcal{P},n)=|n(\mathcal{P} \setminus \partial \mathcal{P}) \cap \mathbb{Z}^N|.$ By this characterization, we show that for any $d \geq 1$ and for any $k,\ell \geq 0$ with $k+\ell \leq d-1$, there exist integral convex polytopes $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{Q}$ of dimension $d$ such that (i) For $t=1,\ldots,k$, we have $i(\mathcal{P},t)=i(\mathcal{Q},t),$ (ii) For $t=1,\ldots,\ell$, we have $i^*(\mathcal{P},t)=i^*(\mathcal{Q},t)$ and (iii) $i(\mathcal{P},k+1) \neq i(\mathcal{Q},k+1)$ and $i^*(\mathcal{P},\ell+1)\neq i^*(\mathcal{Q},\ell+1).$
Gorenstein Fano polytopes arising from order polytopes and chain polytopes
Richard Stanley introduced the order polytope $\mathcal{O}(P)$ and the chain polytope $\mathcal{C}(P)$ arising from a finite partially ordered set $P$, and showed that the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{O}(P)$ is equal to that of $\mathcal{C}(P)$. In addition, the unimodular equivalence problem of $\mathcal{O}(P)$ and $\mathcal{C}(P)$ was studied by the first author and Nan Li. In the present paper, three integral convex polytopes $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{O}(Q))$, $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ and $Γ(\mathcal{C}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$, where $P$ and $Q$ are partially ordered sets with $| P | = | Q |$, will be studied. First, it will be shown that the Ehrhart polynomial of $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ coincides with that of $Γ(\mathcal{C}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$. Furthermore, when $P$ and $Q$ possess a common linear extension, it will be proved that these three convex polytopes have the same Ehrhart polynomial. Second, the problem of characterizing partially ordered sets $P$ and $Q$ for which $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{O}(Q))$ or $Γ(\mathcal{O}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ or $Γ(\mathcal{C}(P), -\mathcal{C}(Q))$ is a smooth Fano polytope will be solved. Finally, when these three polytopes are smooth Fano polytopes, the unimodular equivalence problem of these three polytopes will be discussed.

It is shown that, for each $d \geq 4$, there exists an integral convex polytope $\mathcal{P}$ of dimension $d$ such that each of the coefficients of $n, n^{2}, \ldots, n^{d-2}$ of its Ehrhart polynomial $i(\mathcal{P},n)$ is negative. Moreover, it is also shown that for each $d \geq 3$ and $1 \leq k \leq d-2$, there exists an integral convex polytope $\mathcal{P}$ of dimension $d$ such that the coefficient of $n^k$ of the Ehrhart polynomial $i(\mathcal{P},n)$ of $\mathcal{P}$ is negative and all its remaining coefficients are positive. Finally, we consider all the possible sign patterns of the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomials of low dimensional integral convex polytopes.

Best possible lower bounds on the coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 51 (2016) 297--305 • View PublicationBIB
For an integral convex polytope $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$, we recall $L_\mathcal{P}(n)=|n\mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{Z}^d|$ the Ehrhart polynomial of $\mathcal{P}$. Let $g_r(\mathcal{P})$ be the $r$th coefficients of $L_\mathcal{P}(n)$ for $r=0,\ldots,d$. Martin Henk and Makoto Tagami gave lower bounds on the coefficients $g_r(\mathcal{P})$ in terms of the volume of $\mathcal{P}$. They proved that these bounds are best possible for $r \in \{1,2,d-2\}$. We show that these bounds are also optimal for $r=3$ and $d-r$ even and we give a new best possible bound for $r=d-3$.

In the present paper, under some assumptions, the necessary and sufficient condition for the free sum of $\mathcal{P}$ and $\mathcal{Q}$ to possess the integer decomposition property will be presented.

Minkowski sum of polytopes and its normality

In this paper, we consider the normality or the integer decomposition property (IDP, for short) for Minkowski sums of integral convex polytopes. We discuss some properties on the toric rings associated with Minkowski sums of integral convex polytopes. We also study Minkowski sums of edge polytopes and give a sufficient condition for Minkowski sums of edge polytopes to have IDP.

Gorenstein cut polytopes
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 38 (2014) 122--129 • View PublicationBIB
An integral convex polytope ${\mathcal P}$ is said to be Gorenstein if its toric ring $K[{\mathcal P}]$ is normal and Gorenstein. In this paper, Gorenstein cut polytopes of graphs are characterized explicitly. First, we prove that Gorenstein cut polytopes are compressed (i.e., all of whose reverse lexicographic triangulations are unimodular). Second, by applying Athanasiadis's theory for Gorenstein compressed polytopes, we show that a cut polytope of a graph $G$ is Gorenstein if and only if $G$ has no $K_5$-minor and $G$ is either a bipartite graph without induced cycles of length $\geq 6$ or a bridgeless chordal graph.
Integer decomposition property of dilated polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^N$ be an integral convex polytope of dimension $d$ and write $k \mathcal{P}$, where $k = 1, 2, \ldots$, for dilations of $\mathcal{P}$. We say that $\mathcal{P}$ possesses the integer decomposition property if, for any integer $k = 1, 2, \ldots$ and for any $α\in k \mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{Z}^N$, there exist $α_{1}, \ldots, α_k$ belonging to $\mathcal{P} \cap \mathbb{Z}^N$ such that $α= α_1 + \cdots + α_k$. A fundamental question is to determine the integers $k > 0$ for which the dilated polytope $k\mathcal{P}$ possesses the integer decomposition property. In the present paper, combinatorial invariants related to the integer decomposition property of dilated polytopes will be proposed and studied.

Ehrhart polynomials of integral simplices with prime volumes
For an integral convex polytope $\Pc \subset \RR^N$ of dimension $d$, we call $δ(\Pc)=(δ_0, δ_1,..., δ_d)$ the $δ$-vector of $\Pc$ and $\vol(\Pc)=\sum_{i=0}^dδ_i$ its normalized volume. In this paper, we will establish the new equalities and inequalities on $δ$-vectors for integral simplices whose normalized volumes are prime. Moreover, by using those, we will classify all the possible $δ$-vectors of integral simplices with normalized volume 5 and 7.

Higher Spin Alternating Sign Matrices
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 14 (2007) Research Paper 83 • View PublicationBIB
We define a higher spin alternating sign matrix to be an integer-entry square matrix in which, for a nonnegative integer r, all complete row and column sums are r, and all partial row and column sums extending from each end of the row or column are nonnegative. Such matrices correspond to configurations of spin r/2 statistical mechanical vertex models with domain-wall boundary conditions. The case r=1 gives standard alternating sign matrices, while the case in which all matrix entries are nonnegative gives semimagic squares. We show that the higher spin alternating sign matrices of size n are the integer points of the r-th dilate of an integral convex polytope of dimension (n-1)^2 whose vertices are the standard alternating sign matrices of size n. It then follows that, for fixed n, these matrices are enumerated by an Ehrhart polynomial in r.

Ehrhart polynomials of cyclic polytopes

The Ehrhart polynomial of an integral convex polytope counts the number of lattice points in dilates of the polytope. In math.CO/0402148, the authors conjectured that for any cyclic polytope with integral parameters, the Ehrhart polynomial of it is equal to its volume plus the Ehrhart polynomial of its lower envelope and proved the case when the dimension d = 2. In our article, we prove the conjecture for any dimension.

Decomposition of polytopes and polynomials

Motivated by a connection with the factorization of multivariate polynomials, we study integral convex polytopes and their integral decompositions in the sense of the Minkowski sum. We first show that deciding decomposability of integral polygons is NP-complete then present a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm for decomposing polygons. For higher dimensional polytopes, we give a heuristic algorithm which is based upon projections and uses randomization. Applications of our algorithm include absolute irreducibility testing and factorization of polynomials via their Newton polytopes.
