$h$-vector inequalities under weak maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the behavior of $h$-vectors associated to matroid complexes under weak maps, or inclusions of matroid polytopes. Specifically, we show that the $h$-vector of the order complex of the lattice of flats of a matroid is component-wise non-increasing under a weak map. This result extends to the flag $h$-vector. We note that the analogous result also holds for independence complexes and rank-preserving weak maps.

Zero loci of nullvectors and skew zero forcing in graphs and hypergraphs
There is interesting internal structure in the nullspaces of graph and hypergraph adjacency matrices, especially for trees, bipartite graphs, and related combinatorial classes. The zero loci of nullvectors, i.e., their zero coordinates' indices, encode information about matchings, coverings, and edges' influence on rank. This set system is the lattice of flats of a ``kernel matroid'', a subsystem of which are the ``stalled'' sets closed under skew zero forcing (SZF), a graph percolation/infection model known to have connections with rank and nullity. For a wide variety of graphs, the lattice of SZF-closed sets is also a matroid, a fact which can be used to obtain a polynomial-time algorithm for computing the skew zero forcing number. This contrasts with the general case, where we show that the corresponding decision problem is NP-hard. We also define skew zero forcing for hypergraphs, and show that, for linear hypertrees, the poset of SZF-closed sets is dual to the lattice of ideals of the hypergraph's nullvariety; while, for complete hypergraphs, the SZF-closed sets and the zero loci of nullvectors are more loosely related.

Lattices of flats for symplectic matroids
We are interested in expanding our understanding of symplectic matroids by exploring the properties of a class of symplectic matroids with a "lattice of flats". Taking a well-behaved family of subdivisions of the cross polytope we obtain a construction of lattices, resembling a known definition for the geometric lattice corresponding to ordinary matroid. We construct a correspondence to a set of enveloped symplectic matroids, we denote ranked symplectic matroids. As a by-product of our construction, we also obtain a new way of finding symplectic matroids from ordinary ones and an embedding Theorem into geometric lattices. The second part of this paper is dedicated to the properties of ranked symplectic matroids and their enveloping ordinary matroids. We focus on establishing a geometric approach to the study of ranked symplectic matroids, demonstrating the ability to take minors, and proving shellability. We finish with a characterization of ranked symplectic matroids using recursive atom orderings.

Decompositions of Augmented Bergman Complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the augmented Bergman complex of a closure operator on a finite set, which interpolates between the order complex of proper flats and the independence complex of the operator. In 2020, Braden, Huh, Matherne, Proudfoot, and Wang showed that augmented Bergman complexes of matroids are always gallery-connected, and recently Bullock, Kelley, Reiner, Ren, Shemy, Shen, Sun, Tao, and Zhang strengthened "gallery-connected" to "shellable" by providing two classes of shelling orders: "flag-to-basis" shellings and "basis-to-flag" shellings. We show that augmented Bergman complexes of matroids are vertex decomposable, a stronger property than shellable. We also prove that the augmented Bergman complex of any closure operator is shellable if and only if lattice of flats (that is, its non-augmented Bergman complex) is shellable. As a consequence, an augmented Bergman complex is shellable if and only if it admits a flag-to-basis shelling. Perhaps surprisingly, the same does not hold for basis-to-flag shellings: we describe a closure operator whose augmented Bergman complex is shellable, but has no shelling order with bases appearing first.

Polymatroids, closure operators and lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the closure operators of polymatroids from a lattice theoretic point of view. We show that polymatroid closure operators relate to lattices enriched with a generating set in the same way that matroids relate to geometric lattices. Through this relation we define a notion of minors for lattices enriched with a generating set. For the lattice of flats of a graphic matroid, the minors of the lattice are shown to correspond to simple minors of the graph when the vertices are labeled and the edges unlabeled. This correspondence is generalized to all polymatroids.

Weight Spectra of Gabidulin Rank-metric Codes and Betti Numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider $q$-matroids and their associated classical matroids derived from Gabidulin rank-metric codes. We express the generalized rank weights of a Gabidulin rank-metric code in terms of Betti numbers of the dual classical matroid associated to the $q$-matroid corresponding to the code. In our main result, we show how these Betti numbers and their elongations determine the generalized weight polynomials for $q$-matorids, in particular, for the Gabidulin rank-metric codes. In addition, we demonstrate how the weight distribution and higher weight spectra of such codes can be determined directly from the associated $q$-matroids by using Möbius functions of its lattice of $q$-flats.

Representations of automorphism groups on the homology of matroids
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 94 (2021) 103312 • View Publication • BIB
Given a group $G$ of automorphisms of a matroid $M$, we describe the representations of $G$ on the homology of the independence complex of the dual matroid $M^*$. These representations are related with the homology of the lattice of flats of $M$, and (when $M$ is realizable) with the top cohomology of a hyperplane arrangement. Finally we analyze in detail the case of the complete graph, which has applications to algebraic geometry.

Combinatorial analogs of topological zeta functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this article we introduce a new matroid invariant, a combinatorial analog of the topological zeta function of a polynomial. More specifically we associate to any ranked, atomic meet-semilattice L a rational function Z(L,s), in such a way that when L is the lattice of flats of a complex hyperplane arrangement we recover the usual topological zeta function. The definition is in terms of a choice of a combinatorial analog of resolution of singularities, and the main result is that Z(L,s) does not depend on this choice and depends only on L. Known properties of the topological zeta function provide a source of potential complex realisability test for matroids.

Convexity in ordered matroids and the generalized external order
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27(3) (2020), P3.41 • View Publication • BIB
In 1980, Las Vergnas defined a notion of discrete convexity for oriented matroids, which Edelman subsequently related to the theory of anti-exchange closure functions and convex geometries. In this paper, we use generalized matroid activity to construct a convex geometry associated with an ordered, unoriented matroid. The construction in particular yields a new type of representability for an ordered matroid defined by the affine representability of its corresponding convex geometry. The lattice of convex sets of this convex geometry induces an ordering on the matroid independent sets which extends the external active order on matroid bases. We show that this generalized external order forms a supersolvable meet-distributive lattice refining the geometric lattice of flats, and we uniquely characterize the lattices isomorphic to the external order of a matroid. Finally, we introduce a new trivariate generating function generalizing the matroid Tutte polynomial.

On the lattice of flats of a boolean representable simplicial complex
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that the lattices of flats of boolean representable simplicial complexes are always atomistic, but semimodular if and only if the complex is a matroid. A canonical construction is introduced for arbitrary finite atomistic lattices, providing a characterization of the lattices of flats of boolean representable simplicial complexes and a decidability condition. We remark that every finite lattice occurs as the lattice of flats of some simplicial complex.

Gammoids, Pseudomodularity and Flatness Degree
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, vol 22, p1.54 (2015) • View Publication • BIB
We study weaker variations of the property of flatness in matroid theory. We show that these variations form a chain of increasingly stronger properties all implying pseudomodularity on its lattice of flats. We show examples in the gammoid class that show that these properties are in fact different.

Matroids, hereditary collections and simplicial complexes having boolean representations
Inspired by the work of Izakhian and Rhodes, a theory of representation of hereditary collections by boolean matrices is developed. This corresponds to representation by finite $\vee$-generated lattices. The lattice of flats, defined for hereditary collections, lattices and matrices, plays a central role in the theory. The representations constitute a lattice and the minimal and strictly join irreducible elements are studied, as well as various closure operators.

New light on Bergman complexes by decomposing matroid types
Published • View Publication • BIB
Bergman complexes are polyhedral complexes associated to matroids. Faces of these complexes are certain matroids, called matroid types, too. In order to understand the structure of these faces we decompose matroid types into direct summands. Ardila/Klivans proved that the Bergman Complex of a matroid can be subdivided into the order complex of the proper part of its lattice of flats. Beyond that Feichtner/Sturmfels showed that the Bergman complex can even be subdivided to the even coarser nested set complex. We will give a much shorter and more general proof of this fact. Generalizing formulas proposed by Ardila/Klivans and Feichtner/Sturmfels for special cases, we present a decomposition into direct sums working for faces of any of these complexes. Additionally we show that it is the finest possible decomposition for faces of the Bergman complex.

Boolean Representations of Matroids and Lattices
We introduce a new representation concept for lattices by boolean matrices, and utilize it to prove that any matroid is boolean representable. We show that such a representation can be easily extracted from a representation of the associated lattice of flats of the matroid, leading also to a tighter bound on the representation's size. Consequently, we obtain a linkage of boolean representations with geometry in a very natural way.

Hierarchical zonotopal power ideals
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 33 (2012), no. 6, 1120-1141 • View Publication • BIB
Zonotopal algebra deals with ideals and vector spaces of polynomials that are related to several combinatorial and geometric structures defined by a finite sequence of vectors. Given such a sequence X, an integer k>=-1 and an upper set in the lattice of flats of the matroid defined by X, we define and study the associated hierarchical zonotopal power ideal. This ideal is generated by powers of linear forms. Its Hilbert series depends only on the matroid structure of X. Via the Tutte polynomial, it is related to various other matroid invariants, e.g. the shelling polynomial and the characteristic polynomial. This work unifies and generalizes results by Ardila-Postnikov on power ideals and by Holtz-Ron and Holtz-Ron-Xu on (hierarchical) zonotopal algebra. We also generalize a result on zonotopal Cox modules that were introduced by Sturmfels-Xu.

Bergman Complexes, Coxeter Arrangements, and Graph Associahedra
Tropical varieties play an important role in algebraic geometry. The Bergman complex B(M) and the positive Bergman complex B+(M) of an oriented matroid M generalize to matroids the notions of the tropical variety and positive tropical variety associated to a linear ideal. Our main result is that if A is a Coxeter arrangement of type Phi with corresponding oriented matroid M_Phi, then B+(M_Phi) is dual to the graph associahedron of type Phi, and B(M_Phi) equals the nested set complex of A. In addition, we prove that for any orientable matroid M, one can find |mu(M)| different reorientations of M such that the corresponding positive Bergman complexes cover B(M), where mu(M) denotes the Mobius function of the lattice of flats of M.

Matroid polytopes, nested sets and Bergman fans
The tropical variety defined by linear equations with constant coefficients is the Bergman fan of the corresponding matroid. Building on a self-contained introduction to matroid polytopes, we present a geometric construction of the Bergman fan, and we discuss its relationship with the simplicial complex of nested sets in the lattice of flats. The Bergman complex is triangulated by the nested set complex, and the two complexes coincide if and only if every connected flat remains connected after contracting along any subflat. This sharpens a result of Ardila-Klivans who showed that the Bergman complex is triangulated by the order complex of the lattice of flats. The nested sets specify the De Concini-Procesi compactification of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement, while the Bergman fan specifies the tropical compactification. These two compactifications are almost equal, and we highlight the subtle differences.

The Bergman complex of a matroid and phylogenetic trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study the Bergman complex B(M) of a matroid M: a polyhedral complex which arises in algebraic geometry, but which we describe purely combinatorially. We prove that a natural subdivision of the Bergman complex of M is a geometric realization of the order complex of its lattice of flats. In addition, we show that the Bergman fan B'(K_n) of the graphical matroid of the complete graph K_n is homeomorphic to the space of phylogenetic trees T_n.

Orlik-Solomon algebras and Tutte polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
The $OS$ algebra $A$ of a matroid $M$ is a graded algebra related to the Whitney homology of the lattice of flats of $M$. In case $M$ is the underlying matroid of a hyperplane arrangement \A in $\C^r$, $A$ is isomorphic to the cohomology algebra of the complement $\C^r\setminus \bigcup \A.$ Few examples are known of pairs of arrangements with non-isomorphic matroids but isomorphic $OS$ algebras. In all known examples, the Tutte polynomials are identical, and the complements are homotopy equivalent but not homeomorphic. We construct, for any given simple matroid $M_0$, a pair of infinite families of matroids $M_n$ and $M'_n$, $n\geq 1$, each containing $M_0$ as a submatroid, in which corresponding pairs have isomorphic $OS$ algebras. If the seed matroid $ M_0$ is connected, then $M_n$ and $M'_n$ have different Tutte polynomials. As a consequence of the construction, we obtain, for any $m$, $m$ different matroids with isomorphic $OS$ algebras. Suppose one is given a pair of central complex hyperplane arrangements $\A_0$ and $\A_1$. Let $§$ denote the arrangement consisting of the hyperplane $\{0\}$ in $\C^1$. We define the parallel connection $P(\A_0,\A_1)$, an arrangement realizing the parallel connection of the underlying matroids, and show that the direct sums $\A_0 \oplus \A_1$ and $§\oplus P(\A_0,\A_1)$ have diffeomorphic complements.
