On 4-critical t-perfect graphs
It is an open question whether the chromatic number of $t$-perfect graphs is bounded by a constant. The largest known value for this parameter is 4, and the only example of a 4-critical $t$-perfect graph, due to Laurent and Seymour, is the complement of the line graph of the prism $Π$ (a graph is 4-critical if it has chromatic number 4 and all its proper induced subgraphs are 3-colorable). In this paper, we show a new example of a 4-critical $t$-perfect graph: the complement of the line graph of the 5-wheel $W_5$. Furthermore, we prove that these two examples are in fact the only 4-critical $t$-perfect graphs in the class of complements of line graphs. As a byproduct, an analogous and more general result is obtained for $h$-perfect graphs in this class. The class of $P_6$-free graphs is a proper superclass of complements of line graphs and appears as a natural candidate to further investigate the chromatic number of $t$-perfect graphs. We observe that a result of Randerath, Schiermeyer and Tewes implies that every $t$-perfect $P_6$-free graph is 4-colorable. Finally, we use results of Chudnovsky et al to show that $\overline{L(W_5)}$ and $\overline{L(Π)}$ are also the only 4-critical $t$-perfect $P_6$-free graphs.

Pendant-tree connectivity of line graphs
The concept of pendant-tree connectivity, introduced by Hager in 1985, is a generalization of classical vertex-connectivity. In this paper, we study pendant-tree connectivity of line graphs.

Path connectivity of line graphs
Dirac showed that in a $(k-1)$-connected graph there is a path through each $k$ vertices. The path $k$-connectivity $π_k(G)$ of a graph $G$, which is a generalization of Dirac's notion, was introduced by Hager in 1986. In this paper, we study path connectivity of line graphs.

On the permanental nullity and matching number of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, let $ν(G)$ and $A(G)$ denote the matching number and adjacency matrix of $G$, respectively. The permanental polynomial of $G$ is defined as $π(G,x)={\rm per}(Ix-A(G))$. The permanental nullity of $G$, denoted by $η_{per}(G)$, is the multiplicity of the zero root of $π(G,x)$. In this paper, we use the Gallai-Edmonds structure theorem to derive a concise formula which reveals the relationship between the permanental nullity and the matching number of a graph. Furthermore, we prove a necessary and sufficient condition for a graph $G$ to have $η_{per}(G)=0$. As applications, we show that every unicyclic graph $G$ on $n$ vertices satisfies $n-2ν(G)-1 \le η_{per}(G) \le n-2ν(G)$, that the permanental nullity of the line graph of a graph is either zero or one, and that the permanental nullity of a factor critical graph is always zero.

Mock Threshold Graphs
Published in Discrete Math., 341 (2018), no. 8, 2159-2178 • View PublicationBIB
Mock threshold graphs are a simple generalization of threshold graphs that, like threshold graphs, are perfect graphs. Our main theorem is a characterization of mock threshold graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. Other theorems characterize mock threshold graphs that are claw-free and that are line graphs. We also discuss relations with chordality and well-quasi-ordering as well as algorithmic aspects.

Distance-regular Cayley graphs with least eigenvalue $-2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify the distance-regular Cayley graphs with least eigenvalue $-2$ and diameter at most three. Besides sporadic examples, these comprise of the lattice graphs, certain triangular graphs, and line graphs of incidence graphs of certain projective planes. In addition, we classify the possible connection sets for the lattice graphs and obtain some results on the structure of distance-regular Cayley line graphs of incidence graphs of generalized polygons.

The complexity of partitioning into disjoint cliques and a triangle-free graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by Chudnovsky's structure theorem of bull-free graphs, Abu-Khzam, Feghali, and Müller have recently proved that deciding if a graph has a vertex partition into disjoint cliques and a triangle-free graph is NP-complete for five graph classes. The problem is trivial for the intersection of these five classes. We prove that the problem is NP-complete for the intersection of two subsets of size four among the five classes. We also show NP-completeness for other small classes, such as graphs with maximum degree 4 and line graphs.

Pseudoachromatic and connected-pseudoachromatic indices of the complete graph
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics-2017 • View PublicationBIB
A complete $k$-coloring of a graph $G$ is a (not necessarily proper) $k$-coloring of the vertices of $G$, such that each pair of different colors appears in an edge. A complete $k$-coloring is also called connected, if each color class induces a connected subgraph of $G$. The pseudoachromatic index of a graph $G$, denoted by $ψ'(G)$, is the largest $k$ for which the line graph of $G$ has a complete $k$-coloring. Analogously the connected-pseudoachromatic index of $G$, denoted by $ψ_c'(G)$, is the largest $k$ for which the line graph of $G$ has a connected and complete $k$-coloring. In this paper we study these two parameters for the complete graph $K_n$. Our main contribution is to improve the linear lower bound for the connected pseudoachromatic index given by Abrams and Berman [Australas J Combin 60 (2014), 314--324] and provide an upper bound. These two bounds prove that for any integer $n\geq 8$ the order of $ψ_c'(K_n)$ is $n^{3/2}$. Related to the pseudoachromatic index we prove that for $q$ a power of $2$ and $n=q^2+q+1$, $ψ'(K_n)$ is at least $q^3+2q-3$ which improves the bound $q^3+q$ given by Araujo, Montellano and Strausz [J Graph Theory 66 (2011), 89--97].

Color-line and Proper Color-line Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by investigations of rainbow matchings in edge colored graphs, we introduce the notion of color-line graphs that generalizes the classical concept of line graphs in a natural way. Let $H$ be a (properly) edge-colored graph. The (proper) color-line graph $C\!L(H)$ of $H$ has edges of $H$ as vertices, and two edges of $H$ are adjacent in $C\!L(H)$ if they are incident in $H$ or have the same color. We give Krausz-type characterizations for (proper) color-line graphs, and point out that, for any fixed $k\ge 2$, recognizing if a graph is the color-line graph of some graph $H$ in which the edges are colored with at most $k$ colors is NP-complete. In contrast, we show that, for any fixed $k$, recognizing color-line graphs of properly edge colored graphs $H$ with at most $k$ colors is polynomially. Moreover, we give a good characterization for proper $2$-color line graphs that yields a linear time recognition algorithm in this case.

A proof of the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture
Given a bridgeless graph $G$, the Cycle Double Cover Conjecture posits that there is a list of cycles of $G$, such that every edge appears in exactly two cycles on the list. This conjecture was originally posed independently in 1973 by Szekeres and 1979 by Seymour. In 1985, Jaeger demonstrated that it is sufficient to prove in the case that $G$ is a cubic graph. We here present a proof that every bridgeless cubic graph has a cycle double cover by analyzing certain kinds of cycles in the line graph of $G$. Further, in the case that $G$ is cubic, we prove the stronger conjecture that given a bridgeless graph $G$ and a cycle $C$ in $G$, then there exists a cycle double cover of $G$ containing $C$.

The coefficients of the reduced Bartholdi zeta function
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we establish a new zeta function based on the Bartholdi zeta function for an undirected graph G called the reduced Bartholdi zeta function. We study the relation between its coefficients and the structure of the graph, and demonstrate that the coefficients count the star subgraphs in the symmetric digraph D(G). Moreover, we investigate the properties of semi principle minors extracted from the adjacency matrix of the oriented line graph of G. We also present a general formula for calculating all the coefficients of the reduced Bartholdi zeta function.

Intersection Graphs of Oriented Hypergraphs and Their Matrices
For a given hypergraph, an orientation can be assigned to the vertex-edge incidences. This orientation is used to define the adjacency and Laplacian matrices. In addition to studying these matrices, several related structures are investigated including the incidence dual, the intersection graph (line graph), and the 2-section. A connection is then made between oriented hypergraphs and balanced incomplete block designs.

On Galvin orientations of line graphs and list-edge-colouring
The notion of a Galvin orientation of a line graph is introduced, generalizing the idea used by Galvin in his landmark proof of the list-edge-colouring conjecture for bipartite graphs. If L(G) has a proper Galvin orientation with respect to k, then it immediately implies that G is k-list-edge-colourable, but the converse is not true. The stronger property is studied in graphs of the form `bipartite plus an edge', the Petersen graph, cliques, and simple graphs without odd cycles of length 5 or longer.

Expression for the Number of Spanning Trees of Line Graphs of Arbitrary Connected Graphs
Published in J.Graph Theory 85 (2017) 74-93 • View PublicationBIB
For any graph $G$, let $t(G)$ be the number of spanning trees of $G$, $L(G)$ be the line graph of $G$ and for any non-negative integer $r$, $S_r(G)$ be the graph obtained from $G$ by replacing each edge $e$ by a path of length $r+1$ connecting the two ends of $e$. In this paper we obtain an expression for $t(L(S_r(G)))$ in terms of spanning trees of $G$ by a combinatorial approach. This result generalizes some known results on the relation between $t(L(S_r(G)))$ and $t(G)$ and gives an explicit expression $t(L(S_r(G)))=k^{m+s-n-1}(rk+2)^{m-n+1}t(G)$ if $G$ is of order $n+s$ and size $m+s$ in which $s$ vertices are of degree $1$ and the others are of degree $k$. Thus we prove a conjecture on $t(L(S_1(G)))$ for such a graph $G$.
On the pseudoachromatic index of the complete graph III
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics-2018 • View PublicationBIB
Let $ Π_q $ be the projective plane of order $ q $, let $ψ(m):=ψ(L(K_m))$ the pseudoachromatic number of the complete line graph of order $ m $, let $ a\in \{ 3,4,\dots,\tfrac{q}{2}+1 \} $ and $ m_a=(q+1)^2-a $. In this paper, we improve the upper bound of $ ψ(m) $ given by Araujo-Pardo et al. [J Graph Theory 66 (2011), 89--97] and Jamison [Discrete Math. 74 (1989), 99--115] in the following values: if $ x\geq 2 $ is an integer and $m\in \{4x^2-x,\dots,4x^2+3x-3\}$ then $ψ(m) \leq 2x(m-x-1)$. On the other hand, if $ q $ is even and there exists $ Π_q $ we give a complete edge-colouring of $ K_{m_a} $ with $(m_a-a)q$ colours. Moreover, using this colouring we extend the previous results for $a=\{-1,0,1,2\}$ given by Araujo-Pardo et al. in [J Graph Theory 66 (2011), 89--97] and [Bol. Soc. Mat. Mex. (2014) 20:17--28] proving that $ψ(m_a)=(m_a-a)q$ for $ a\in \{3,4,\dots,\left\lceil \frac{1+\sqrt{4q+9}}{2}\right\rceil -1 \} $.

A formula for the number of the spanning trees of line graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a loopless graph and $\mathcal{T}(G)$ be the set of all spanning trees of $G$. Let $L(G)$ be the line graph of the graph $G$ and $t(L(G))$ be the number of spanning trees of $L(G)$. Then, by using techniques from electrical networks, we obtain the following formula: $$ t(L(G)) = \frac{1}{\prod_{v\in V}d^2(v)}\sum_{T\subseteq \mathcal{T}(G)}\big[\prod_{e = xy\in T}d(x)d(y)\big]\big[\prod_{e = uv\in E\backslash T}[d(u)+d(v)]\big]. $$ As a result, we provide a very simple and different proof of the formula on the number of spanning trees of some irregular line graphs, and give a positive answer to a conjecture proposed by Yan [J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 120 (2013) no. 7, 1642-1648]. By applying our formula we also derive the number of spanning trees of circulant line graphs.

The Smith and Critical Groups of the Square Rook's Graph and its Complement
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $R_{n}$ denote the graph with vertex set consisting of the squares of an $n \times n$ grid, with two squares of the grid adjacent when they lie in the same row or column. This is the square rook's graph, and can also be thought of as the Cartesian product of two complete graphs of order $n$, or the line graph of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,n}$. In this paper we compute the Smith group and critical group of the graph $R_{n}$ and its complement. This is equivalent to determining the Smith normal form of both the adjacency and Laplacian matrix of each of these graphs. In doing so we verify a 1986 conjecture of Rushanan.
A Coloring Algorithm for $4K_1$-free line graphs
Let $L$ be a set of graphs. $Free$($L$) is the set of graphs that do not contain any graph in $L$ as an induced subgraph. It is known that if $L$ is a set of four-vertex graphs, then the complexity of the coloring problem for $Free$($L$) is known with three exceptions: $L $= {claw, $4K_1$}, $L$ = {claw, $4K_1$, co-diamond}, and $L$ = {$C_4$, $4K_1$}. In this paper, we study the coloring problem for $Free$(claw, $4K_1$). We solve the coloring problem for a subclass of $Free$(claw, $4K_1$) which contains the class of $4K_1$-free line graphs. Our result implies the chromatic index of a graph with no matching of size four can be computed in polynomial time.

Oriented Gain Graphs, Line Graphs and Eigenvalues
Published • View PublicationBIB
A theory of orientation on gain graphs (voltage graphs) is developed to generalize the notion of orientation on graphs and signed graphs. Using this orientation scheme, the line graph of a gain graph is studied. For a particular family of gain graphs with complex units, matrix properties are established. As with graphs and signed graphs, there is a relationship between the incidence matrix of a complex unit gain graph and the adjacency matrix of the line graph.

Location-domination in line graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics 340(1):3140-3153, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
A set $D$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is locating if every two distinct vertices outside $D$ have distinct neighbors in $D$; that is, for distinct vertices $u$ and $v$ outside $D$, $N(u) \cap D \neq N(v) \cap D$, where $N(u)$ denotes the open neighborhood of $u$. If $D$ is also a dominating set (total dominating set), it is called a locating-dominating set (respectively, locating-total dominating set) of $G$. A graph $G$ is twin-free if every two distinct vertices of $G$ have distinct open and closed neighborhoods. It is conjectured [D. Garijo, A. Gonzalez and A. Marquez, The difference between the metric dimension and the determining number of a graph. Applied Mathematics and Computation 249 (2014), 487--501] and [F. Foucaud and M. A. Henning. Locating-total dominating sets in twin-free graphs: a conjecture. The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 23 (2016), P3.9] respectively, that any twin-free graph $G$ without isolated vertices has a locating-dominating set of size at most one-half its order and a locating-total dominating set of size at most two-thirds its order. In this paper, we prove these two conjectures for the class of line graphs. Both bounds are tight for this class, in the sense that there are infinitely many connected line graphs for which equality holds in the bounds.
