Khovanskii bases of Cox-Nagata rings and tropical geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Cox ring of a del Pezzo surface of degree 3 has a distinguished set of 27 minimal generators. We investigate conditions under which the initial forms of these generators generate the initial algebra of this Cox ring. Sturmfels and Xu provide a classification in the case of degree 4 del Pezzo surfaces by subdividing the tropical Grassmannian $\operatorname{TGr}(2,\mathbb{Q}^5)$. After providing the necessary background on Cox-Nagata rings and Khovanskii bases, we review the classification obtained by Sturmfels and Xu. Then we describe our classification problem in the degree 3 case and its connections to tropical geometry. In particular, we show that two natural candidates, $\operatorname{TGr}(3,\mathbb{Q}^6)$ and the Naruki fan, are insufficient to carry out the classification.

Beyond Aztec Castles: Toric Cascades in the $dP_3$ Quiver
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given one of an infinite class of supersymmetric quiver gauge theories, string theorists can associate a corresponding toric variety (which is a Calabi-Yau 3-fold) as well as an associated combinatorial model known as a brane tiling. In combinatorial language, a brane tiling is a bipartite graph on a torus and its perfect matchings are of interest to both combinatorialists and physicists alike. A cluster algebra may also be associated to such quivers and in this paper we study the generators of this algebra, known as cluster variables, for the quiver associated to the cone over the del Pezzo surface $dP_3$. In particular, mutation sequences involving mutations exclusively at vertices with two in-coming arrows and two out-going arrows are referred to as toric cascades in the string theory literature. Such toric cascades give rise to interesting discrete integrable systems on the level of cluster variable dynamics. We provide an explicit algebraic formula for all cluster variables which are reachable by toric cascades as well as a combinatorial interpretation involving perfect matchings of subgraphs of the $dP_3$ brane tiling for these formulas in most cases.
Mirror Symmetry and the Classification of Orbifold del Pezzo Surfaces
Published in Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, 144 (2016), 513-527 • View PublicationBIB
We state a number of conjectures that together allow one to classify a broad class of del Pezzo surfaces with cyclic quotient singularities using mirror symmetry. We prove our conjectures in the simplest cases. The conjectures relate mutation-equivalence classes of Fano polygons with Q-Gorenstein deformation classes of del Pezzo surfaces.
Minimality and mutation-equivalence of polygons
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma, 5 (2017), e18 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a concept of minimality for Fano polygons. We show that, up to mutation, there are only finitely many Fano polygons with given singularity content, and give an algorithm to determine the mutation-equivalence classes of such polygons. This is a key step in a program to classify orbifold del Pezzo surfaces using mirror symmetry. As an application, we classify all Fano polygons such that the corresponding toric surface is qG-deformation-equivalent to either (i) a smooth surface; or (ii) a surface with only singularities of type 1/3(1,1).

Tropicalization of classical moduli spaces
Published in Math. Comput. Sci. 8 (2014), no. 2, 119-145 • View PublicationBIB
The image of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement under a monomial map can be tropicalized combinatorially using matroid theory. We apply this to classical moduli spaces that are associated with complex reflection arrangements. Starting from modular curves, we visit the Segre cubic, the Igusa quartic, and moduli of marked del Pezzo surfaces of degrees 2 and 3. Our primary example is the Burkhardt quartic, whose tropicalization is a 3-dimensional fan in 39-dimensional space. This effectuates a synthesis of concrete and abstract approaches to tropical moduli of genus 2 curves.

The maximum cut problem on blow-ups of multiprojective spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
The maximum cut problem for a quintic del Pezzo surface ${\rm Bl}_{4}(\mathbb{P}^2)$ asks: Among all partitions of the 10 exceptional curves into two disjoint sets, what is the largest possible number of pairwise intersections? In this article we show that the answer is twelve. More generally, we obtain bounds for the maximum cut problem for the minuscule varieties $X_{a,b,c}:={\rm Bl}_{b+c}(\mathbb{P}^{c-1})^{a-1}$ studied by Mukai and Castravet-Tevelev and show that these bounds are asymptotically sharp for infinite families. We prove our results by constructing embeddings of the classes of $(-1)$-divisors on these varieties which are optimal for the semidefinite relaxation of the maximum cut problem on graphs proposed by Goemans and Williamson. These results give a new optimality property of the Weyl orbits of root systems of type $A$,$D$ and $E$.

Wall Crossing, Quivers and Crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the spectrum of BPS D-branes on a Calabi-Yau manifold using the 0+1 dimensional quiver gauge theory that describes the dynamics of the branes at low energies. The results of Kontsevich and Soibelman predict how the degeneracies change. We argue that Seiberg dualities of the quiver gauge theories, which change the basis of BPS states, correspond to crossing the "walls of the second kind." There is a large class of examples, including local del Pezzo surfaces, where the BPS degeneracies of quivers corresponding to one D6 brane bound to arbitrary numbers of D4, D2 and D0 branes are counted by melting crystal configurations. We show that the melting crystals that arise are a discretization of the Calabi-Yau geometry. The shape of the crystal is determined by the Calabi-Yau geometry and the background B-field, and its microscopic structure by the quiver Q. We prove that the BPS degeneracies computed from Q and Q' are related by the Kontsevich Soibelman formula, using a geometric realization of the Seiberg duality in the crystal. We also show that, in the limit of infinite B-field, the combinatorics of crystals arising from the quivers becomes that of the topological vertex. We thus re-derive the Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence.
Some new examples of non-degenerate quiver potentials
We prove a technical result which allows us to establish the non-degeneracy of potentials on quivers in some previously unknown or non-obvious cases. Our result applies to certain McKay quivers and also to potentials derived from geometric helices on Del Pezzo surfaces.

Configuration of lines in del Pezzo surfaces with Gosset Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we study the divisor classes of del Pezzo surfaces, which are written as the sum of distinct lines with fixed intersection according to the inscribed simplexes and crosspolytopes in Gosset polytopes. We introduce the k-Steiner system and cornered simplexes, and characterize the configurations of inscribed m(<4)-simplexes with them. Higher dimensional inscribed m(3<m)-simplexes exist in 4_{21} in the Picard group of del Pezzo surface S_{8} of degree 1.The configurations of 4- and 7-simplexes are related to rulings in S_{8}. And the configurations of 5- and 6-simplexes correspond the skew 3-lines and skew 7-lines in S_{8}. In particular, the seven lines in a 6-simplex produce a Fano plane. We also study the inscribed crosspolytopes and hypercubes in the Gosset polytopes.

Gosset Polytopes in Picard groups of del Pezzo Surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we research on the correspondences between the geometry of del Pezzo surfaces S_{r} and the geometry of Gosset polytopes (r-4)_{21}. We construct Gosset polytopes (r-4)_{21} in Pic S_{r}; Q whose vertices are lines, and we identify divisor classes in Pic S_{r} corresponding to (a-1)-simplexes, (r-1)-simplexes and (r-1)-crosspolytopes of the polytope (r-4)_{21}. Then we explain these classes correspond to skew a-lines, exceptional systems and rulings, respectively. As an application, we work on the monoidal transform for lines to study the local geometry of the polytope (r-4)_{21}. And we show Gieser transformation and Bertini transformation induce a symmetry of polytopes 3_{21} and 4_{21}, respectively.
On the combinatorial classification of toric log del Pezzo surfaces
Published in LMS J. Comput. Math. 13 (2010) 33-46 • View PublicationBIB
Toric log del Pezzo surfaces correspond to convex lattice polygons containing the origin in their interior and having only primitive vertices. An upper bound on the volume and on the number of boundary lattice points of these polygons is derived in terms of the index l. Techniques for classifying these polygons are also described: a direct classification for index two is given, and a classification for all l<17 is obtained.

Sagbi Bases of Cox-Nagata Rings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We degenerate Cox-Nagata rings to toric algebras by means of sagbi bases induced by configurations over the rational function field. For del Pezzo surfaces, this degeneration implies the Batyrev-Popov conjecture that these rings are presented by ideals of quadrics. For the blow-up of projective n-space at n+3 points, sagbi bases of Cox-Nagata rings establish a link between the Verlinde formula and phylogenetic algebraic geometry, and we use this to answer questions due to D'Cruz-Iarobbino and Buczynska-Wisniewski. Inspired by the zonotopal algebras of Holtz and Ron, our study emphasizes explicit computations, and offers a new approach to Hilbert functions of fat points.

Toric log Del Pezzo surfaces with Picard number 1 have been completely classified whenever their index is $\le 2$: In this paper we extend the classification for those having index 3: We prove that, up to isomorphism, there are exactly 18 surfaces of this kind.

A boundedness result for toric log Del Pezzo surfaces

In this paper we give an upper bound for the Picard number of the rational surfaces which resolve minimally the singularities of toric log Del Pezzo surfaces of given index $\ell$. This upper bound turns out to be a quadratic polynomial in the variable $\ell$.

Logarithmic equivalence of Welschinger and Gromov-Witten invariants
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Welschinger numbers, a kind of a real analog of the Gromov-Witten numbers which count the complex rational curves through a given generic collection of points, bound from below the number of real rational curves for any real generic collection of points. By the logarithmic equivalence of sequences we mean the asymptotic equivalence of their logarithms. We prove such an equivalence for the Welschinger and Gromov-Witten numbers of any toric Del Pezzo surface with its tautological real structure, in particular, of the projective plane, under the hypothesis that all, or almost all, chosen points are real. We also study the positivity of Welschinger numbers and their monotonicity with respect to the number of imaginary points.

A tropical calculation of the Welschinger invariants of real toric Del Pezzo surfaces
Published in J. Algebraic Geom. 15 (2006), no. 2, 285--322 • View PublicationBIB
The Welschinger invariants of real rational algebraic surfaces are natural analogues of the genus zero Gromov-Witten invariants. We establish a tropical formula to calculate the Welschinger invariants of real toric Del Pezzo surfaces for any conjugation-invariant configuration of points. The formula expresses the Welschinger invariants via the total multiplicity of certain tropical curves (non-Archimedean amoebas) passing through generic configurations of points, and then via the total multiplicity of some lattice path in the convex lattice polygon associated with a given surface. We also present the results of computation of Welschinger invariants, obtained jointly with I. Itenberg and V. Kharlamov.
