Spectra of biperiodic planar networks
A biperiodic planar network is a pair $(G,c)$ where $G$ is a graph embedded on the torus and $c$ is a function from the edges of $G$ to non-zero complex numbers. Associated to the discrete Laplacian on a biperiodic planar network is its spectrum: a triple $(C,S,ν)$, where $C$ is a curve and $S$ is a divisor on it. We give a complete classification of networks (modulo a natural equivalence) in terms of their spectral data. The space of networks has a large group of cluster automorphisms arising from the $Y-Δ$ transformations. We show that the spectrum provides action-angle coordinates for the discrete cluster integrable systems defined by these automorphisms.
Non-Monochromatic and Conflict-Free Coloring on Tree Spaces and Planar Network Spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well known that any set of n intervals in $\mathbb{R}^1$ admits a non-monochromatic coloring with two colors and a conflict-free coloring with three colors. We investigate generalizations of this result to colorings of objects in more complex 1-dimensional spaces, namely so-called tree spaces and planar network spaces.

We provide a combinatorial interpretation of Lah numbers by means of planar networks. Henceforth, as a conesquence of Lindström's lemma, we conclude that the related Lah matrix possesses a remarkable property of total non-negativity.

Planar graphs and Stanley's Chromatic Functions
This article is dedicated to the study of positivity phenomena for the chromatic symmetric function of a graph with respect to various bases of symmetric functions. We give a new proof of Gasharov's theorem on the Schur-positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a $(3 + 1)$-free poset. We present a combinatorial interpretation of the Schur-coefficients in terms of planar networks. Compared to Gasharov's proof, it gives a clearer visual illustration of the cancellation procedures and is quite similar in spirit to the proof of monomial positivity of Schur functions via the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot lemma. We apply a similar device to the $e$-positivity problem of chromatic functions. Following Stanley, we analyze certain analogs of symmetric functions attached to graphs instead of working with chromatic symmetric functions of graphs directly. We introduce a new combinatorial object: the correct sequences of unit interval orders, and, using these, we reprove monomial positivity of $G$-analogues of the power sum symmetric functions.

A Combinatorial Interpretation of the LDU Decomposition of Totally Positive Matrices
We study the combinatorial description of the LDU decomposition of totally positive matrices. We give a description of the lower triangular L, the diagonal D, and the upper triangular U matrices of the LDU decomposition of totally positive matrices in terms of the combinatorial structure of essential planar networks described by Zelvinsky and Fomin. Similarly, we find a combinatorial description of the inverses of these matrices. In addition, we provide recursive formulae for computing the L, D, and U matrices of a totally positive matrix.

Total positivity for the Lagrangian Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
The stratification of the Grassmannian by positroid varieties has been the subject of extensive research. Positroid varieties are in bijection with a number of combinatorial objects, including $k$-Bruhat intervals and bounded affine permutations. In addition, Postnikov's boundary measurement map gives a family of parametrizations of each positroid variety; the domain of each parametrization is the space of edge weights of a weighted planar network. In this paper, we generalize the combinatorics of positroid varieties to the Lagrangian Grassmannian $Λ(2n)$, which is the type $C$ analog of the ordinary, or type $A$, Grassmannian. The Lagrangian Grassmannian has a stratification by projected Richardson varieties, which are the type $C$ analogs of positroid varieties. We define type $C$ generalizations of bounded affine permutations and $k$-Bruhat intervals, as well as several other combinatorial posets which index positroid varieties. In addition, we generalize Postnikov's network parametrizations to projected Richardson varieties in $Λ(2n)$. In particular, we show that restricting the edge weights of our networks to $\mathbb{R}^+$ yields a family of parametrizations for totally nonnegative cells in $Λ(2n)$. In the process, we obtain a set of linear relations among the Plücker coordinates on $\text{Gr}(n,2n)$ which cut out the Lagrangian Grassmannian set-theoretically.

The space of circular planar electrical networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss several parametrizations of the space of circular planar electrical networks. For any circular planar network we associate a canonical minimal network with the same response matrix, called a "standard" network. The conductances of edges in a standard network can be computed as a biratio of Pfaffians constructed from the response matrix. The conductances serve as coordinates that are compatible with the cell structure of circular planar networks in the sense that one conductance degenerates to 0 or infinity when moving from a cell to a boundary cell. We also show how to test if a network with n nodes is well-connected by checking that $\binom{n}{2}$ minors of the $n\times n$ response matrix are positive; Colin de Verdière had previously shown that it was sufficient to check the positivity of exponentially many minors. For standard networks with m edges, positivity of the conductances can be tested by checking the positivity of m+1 Pfaffians.

Bridge graphs and Deodhar parametrizations for positroid varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
A parametrization of a positroid variety $Π$ of dimension $d$ is a regular map $(\mathbb{C}^{\times})^{d} \rightarrow Π$ which is birational onto a dense subset of $Π$. There are several remarkable combinatorial constructions which yield parametrizations of positroid varieties. We investigate the relationship between two families of such parametrizations, and prove they are essentially the same. Our first family is defined in terms of Postnikov's boundary measurement map, and the domain of each parametrization is the space of edge weights of a planar network. We focus on a special class of planar networks called bridge graphs, which have applications to particle physics. Our second family arises from Marsh and Rietsch's parametrizations of Deodhar components of the flag variety, which are indexed by certain subexpressions of reduced words. Projecting to the Grassmannian gives a family of parametrizations for each positroid variety. We show that each Deodhar parametrization for a positroid variety corresponds to a bridge graph, while each parametrization from a bridge graph agrees with some projected Deodhar parametrization.
The Horn problem and planar networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
The problem of determining the set of possible eigenvalues of 3 Hermitian matrices that sum up to zero is known as the Horn problem. The answer is a polyhedral cone, which, following Knutson and Tao, can be described as the projection of a simpler cone in the space of triangular tableaux (or hives) to the boundary nodes of the tableau. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial problem defined in terms of certain weighted planar graphs giving rise to exactly the same polyhedral cone. In our framework, the values at the inner nodes of the triangular tableaux receive a natural interpretation. Other problems of linear algebra fit into the same scheme, among them the Gelfand--Zeitlin problem. Our approach is motivated by the works of Fomin and Zelevinsky on total positivity and by the ideas of tropicalization.

The Laplacian on planar graphs and graphs on surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
These are lecture notes for the Current Developments in Mathematics conference at Harvard, November, 2011. We discuss topological, probabilistic and combinatorial aspects of the Laplacian on a graph embedded on a surface. The three main goals are to discuss: (1) for "circular" planar networks, the characterization due to Colin de Verdière of Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator; (2) The connections with the random spanning tree model; and (3) the characteristic polynomial of the Laplacian on an annulus and torus.

Nonnegative minors of minor matrices
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, Volume 436, Issue 7, Pages 2187-2200, 2012 • View PublicationBIB
Using the relationship between totally nonnegative matrices and directed acyclic weighted planar networks, we show that $2\times 2$ minors of minor matrices of totally nonnegative matrices are also nonnegative. We give a combinatorial interpretation for the minors of minor matrices in terms of the weights of families of paths in a network.

Q-system Cluster Algebras, Paths and Total Positivity

In the first part of this paper, we provide a concise review of our method of solution of the $A_r$ Q-systems in terms of the partition function of paths on a weighted graph. In the second part, we show that it is possible to modify the graphs and transfer matrices so as to provide an explicit connection to the theory of planar networks introduced in the context of totally positive matrices by Fomin and Zelevinsky. As an illustration of the further generality of our method, we apply it to give a simple solution for the rank 2 affine cluster algebras studied by Caldero and Zelevinsky.

Confirming Two Conjectures of Su and Wang
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 43 (2009) 317--322 • View PublicationBIB
Two conjectures of Su and Wang (2008) concerning binomial coefficients are proved. For $n\geq k\geq 0$ and $b>a>0$, we show that the finite sequence $C_j=\binom{n+ja}{k+jb}$ is a Pólya frequency sequence. For $n\geq k\geq 0$ and $a>b>0$, we show that there exists an integer $m\geq 0$ such that the infinite sequence $\binom{n+ja}{k+jb}, j=0, 1,...$, is log-concave for $0\leq j\leq m$ and log-convex for $j\geq m$. The proof of the first result exploits the connection between total positivity and planar networks, while that of the second uses a variation-diminishing property of the Laplace transform.

A formula for Plücker coordinates associated with a planar network
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2008) Vol. 2008, article ID rnn081, 19 pages, published on July 24, 2008. • View PublicationBIB
For a planar directed graph G, Postnikov's boundary measurement map sends positive weight functions on the edges of G onto the appropriate totally nonnegative Grassmann cell. We establish an explicit formula for Postnikov's map by expressing each Pluecker coordinate as a ratio of two combinatorially defined polynomials in the edge weights, with positive integer coefficients. In the non-planar setting, we show that a similar formula holds for special choices of Pluecker coordinates.

Temperley-Lieb pfaffinants and Schur $Q$-positivity conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study pfaffian analogues of immanants, which we call pfaffinants. Our main object is the TL-pfaffinants which are analogues of Rhoades and Skandera's TL-immanants. We show that TL-pfaffinants are positive when applied to planar networks and explain how to decompose products of complementary pfaffians in terms of TL-pfaffinants. We conjecture in addition that TL-pfaffinants have positivity properties related to Schur Q-functions.

Characterization and enumeration of toroidal K_{3,3}-subdivision-free graphs

We describe the structure of 2-connected non-planar toroidal graphs with no K_{3,3}-subdivisions, using an appropriate substitution of planar networks into the edges of certain graphs called toroidal cores. The structural result is based on a refinement of the algorithmic results for graphs containing a fixed K_5-subdivision in [A. Gagarin and W. Kocay, "Embedding graphs containing K_5-subdivisions'', Ars Combin. 64 (2002), 33-49]. It allows to recognize these graphs in linear-time and makes possible to enumerate labelled 2-connected toroidal graphs containing no K_{3,3}-subdivisions and having minimum vertex degree two or three by using an approach similar to [A. Gagarin, G. Labelle, and P. Leroux, "Counting labelled projective-planar graphs without a K_{3,3}-subdivision", submitted, arXiv:math.CO/0406140, (2004)].
