Positive spectrahedra: Invariance principles and Pseudorandom generators
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent work, O'Donnell, Servedio and Tan (STOC 2019) gave explicit pseudorandom generators (PRGs) for arbitrary $m$-facet polytopes in $n$ variables with seed length poly-logarithmic in $m,n$, concluding a sequence of works in the last decade, that was started by Diakonikolas, Gopalan, Jaiswal, Servedio, Viola (SICOMP 2010) and Meka, Zuckerman (SICOMP 2013) for fooling linear and polynomial threshold functions, respectively. In this work, we consider a natural extension of PRGs for intersections of positive spectrahedrons. A positive spectrahedron is a Boolean function $f(x)=[x_1A^1+\cdots +x_nA^n \preceq B]$ where the $A^i$s are $k\times k$ positive semidefinite matrices. We construct explicit PRGs that $δ$-fool "regular" width-$M$ positive spectrahedrons (i.e., when none of the $A^i$s are dominant) over the Boolean space with seed length $\textsf{poly}(\log k,\log n, M, 1/δ)$. Our main technical contributions are the following: We first prove an invariance principle for positive spectrahedra via the well-known Lindeberg method. As far as we are aware such a generalization of the Lindeberg method was unknown. Second, we prove an upper bound on noise sensitivity and a Littlewood-Offord theorem for positive spectrahedra. Using these results, we give applications for constructing PRGs for positive spectrahedra, learning theory, discrepancy sets for positive spectrahedra (over the Boolean cube) and PRGs for intersections of structured polynomial threshold functions.

Cyclotomic expansions for $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ knot invariants via interpolation Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we construct a new basis for the cyclotomic completion of the center of the quantum $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ in terms of the interpolation Macdonald polynomials. Then we use a result of Okounkov to provide a dual basis with respect to the quantum Killing form (or Hopf pairing). The main applications are: 1) cyclotomic expansions for the $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ Reshetikhin--Turaev link invariants and the universal $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ knot invariant; 2) an explicit construction of the unified $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ invariants for integral homology 3-spheres using universal Kirby colors. These results generalize those of Habiro for $\mathfrak{sl}_2$. In addition, we give a simple proof of the fact that the universal $\mathfrak{gl}_N$ invariant of any evenly framed link and the universal $\mathfrak{sl}_N$ invariant of any $0$-framed algebraically split link are $Γ$-invariant, where $Γ=Y/2Y$ with the root lattice $Y$.

Generalized Tilings with Height Functions
Published in Morfismos, Vol 7, No 1, 2003 • Search Publication
In this paper, we introduce a generalization of a class of tilings which appear in the literature: the tilings over which a height function can be defined (for example, the famous tilings of polyominoes with dominoes). We show that many properties of these tilings can be seen as the consequences of properties of the generalized tilings we introduce. In particular, we show that any tiling problem which can be modelized in our generalized framework has the following properties: the tilability of a region can be constructively decided in polynomial time, the number of connected components in the undirected flip-accessibility graph can be determined, and the directed flip-accessibility graph induces a distributive lattice structure. Finally, we give a few examples of known tiling problems which can be viewed as particular cases of the new notions we introduce.

On a polynomial congruence for Eulerian polynomials
We give a short proof, using generating functions, for a polynomial congruence for Eulerian polynomials first proved, using arrangements of hyperplanes, by Yoshinaga and later proved, using roots of unity, by Iijima, Sasaki, Takahashi, and Yoshinaga.

Can smooth graphons in several dimensions be represented by smooth graphons on $[0,1]$?
Published • View PublicationBIB
A graphon that is defined on $[0,1]^d$ and is Hölder$(α)$ continuous for some $d\ge2$ and $α\in(0,1]$ can be represented by a graphon on $[0,1]$ that is Hölder$(α/d)$ continuous. We give examples that show that this reduction in smoothness to $α/d$ is the best possible, for any $d$ and $α$; for $α=1$, the example is a dot product graphon and shows that the reduction is the best possible even for graphons that are polynomials. A motivation for studying the smoothness of graphon functions is that this represents a key assumption in non-parametric statistical network analysis. Our examples show that making a smoothness assumption in a particular dimension is not equivalent to making it in any other latent dimension.

Classifying Nearly Complete Intersection Ideals Generated in Degree Two
Nearly complete intersection ideals were introduced by A. Boocher and J. Seiner (2018) and defines a special class of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring. These ideals were used to give a lower bound of the total sum of betti numbers that appear a minimal free resolution of a monomial ideal. In this note we give a graph theoretic classification of nearly complete intersection ideals generated in degree two. In doing so, we define a novel graph operation (the inversion) that is motivated by the definition of this new class of ideals.

Classification of $K$-type formulas for the Heisenberg ultrahyperbolic operator $\square_s$ for $\widetilde{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ and tridiagonal determinants for local Heun functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $K$-type formulas of the space of $K$-finite solutions to the Heisenberg ultrahyperbolic equation $\square_sf=0$ for the non-linear group $\widetilde{SL}(3,\mathbb{R})$ are classified. This completes a previous study of Kable for the linear group $SL(m,\mathbb{R})$ in the case of $m=3$, as well as generalizes our earlier results on a certain second order differential operator. As a by-product we also show several properties of certain sequences $\{P_j(x;y)\}_{j=0}^\infty$ and $\{Q_j(x;y)\}_{j=0}^\infty$ of tridiagonal determinants, whose generating functions are given by local Heun functions. In particular, it is shown that these sequences satisfy a certain arithmetic-combinatorial property, which we refer to as a palindromic property. We further show that classical sequences of Cayley continuants $\{\mathrm{Cay}_j(x;y)\}_{j=0}^\infty$ and Krawtchouk polynomials $\{\mathcal{K}_j(x;y)\}_{j=0}^\infty$ also admit this property. In the end a new proof of Sylvester's formula for certain tridiagonal determinant $\mathrm{Sylv}(x;n)$ is provided from a representation theory point of view.

Graph complements of circular graphs
Graph complements G(n) of cyclic graphs are circulant, vertex-transitive, claw-free, strongly regular, Hamiltonian graphs with a Z(n) symmetry, Shannon capacity 2 and known Wiener and Harary index. There is an explicit spectral zeta function and tree or forest data. The forest-tree ratio converges to e. The graphs G(n) are Cayley graphs and so Platonic with isomorphic unit spheres G(n-3)^+, complements of path graphs. G(3d+3) are homotop to wedge sums of two d-spheres and G(3d+2),G(3d+4) are homotop to d-spheres, G(3d+1)^+ are contractible, G(3d+2)^+,G(3d+3)^+ are d-spheres. Since disjoint unions are dual to Zykov joins, graph complements of 1-dimensional discrete manifolds G are homotop to a point, a sphere or a wedge sums of spheres. If the length of every connected component of a 1-manifold is not divisible by 3, the graph complement of G is a sphere. In general, the graph complement of a forest is either contractible or a sphere. All induced strict subgraphs of G(n) are either contractible or homotop to spheres. The f-vectors G(n) or G(n)^+ satisfy a hyper Pascal triangle relation, the total number of simplices are hyper Fibonacci numbers. The simplex generating functions are Jacobsthal polynomials, generating functions of k-king configurations on a circular chess board. While the Euler curvature of circle complements G(n) is constant by symmetry, the discrete Gauss-Bonnet curvature of path complements G(n)^+ can be expressed explicitly from the generating functions. There is now a non-trivial 6 periodic Gauss-Bonnet curvature universality in the complement of Barycentric limits. The Brouwer-Lefschetz fixed point theorem produces a 12-periodicity of the Lefschetz numbers of all graph automorphisms of G(n). There is also a 12-periodicity of Wu characteristic. This is a 4 periodicity in dimension. These are manifestations of stable homotopy features, but combinatorial.

Rectangularly Dualizable Graphs: Area-Universality
Published • View PublicationBIB
A plane graph is called a rectangular graph if each of its edges can be oriented either horizontally or vertically, each of its interior regions is a four-sided region and all interior regions can be fitted in a rectangular enclosure. If the dual of a plane graph is a rectangular graph, then the plane graph is a rectangularly dualizable graph. A rectangular dual is it area-universal if any assignment of areas to each of its regions can be realized by a combinatorially weak equivalent rectangular dual. It is still unknown that there exists no polynomial time algorithm to construct an area-universal rectangular dual for a rectangularly dualizable graph . In this paper, we describe a class of rectangularly dualizable graphs wherein each graph can be realized by an area-universal rectangular dual. We also present a polynomial time algorithm for its construction.

An elementary approach to component sizes in critical random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we introduce a simple tool to derive polynomial upper bounds for the probability of observing unusually large maximal components in some models of random graphs when considered at criticality. Specifically, we apply our method to a model of random intersection graph, a random graph obtained through $p$-bond percolation on a general $d$-regular graph, and a model of inhomogeneous random graph.

On Unimodality of Independence Polynomials of Trees
An independent set in a graph is a set of pairwise non-adjacent vertices. The independence number $α{(G)}$ is the size of a maximum independent set in the graph $G$. The independence polynomial of a graph is the generating function for the sequence of numbers of independent sets of each size. In other words, the $k$-th coefficient of the independence polynomial equals the number of independent sets comprised of $k$ vertices. For instance, the degree of the independence polynomial of the graph $G$ is equal to $α{(G)}$. In 1987, Alavi, Malde, Schwenk, and Erd{ö}s conjectured that the independence polynomial of a tree is unimodal. In what follows, we provide support to this assertion considering trees with up to $20$ vertices. Moreover, we show that the corresponding independence polynomials are log-concave and, consequently, unimodal. The algorithm computing the independence polynomial of a given tree makes use of a database of non-isomorphic unlabeled trees to prevent repeated computations.

Improved Rank-Modulation Codes for DNA Storage with Shotgun Sequencing
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study permutations over the set of $\ell$-grams, that are feasible in the sense that there is a sequence whose $\ell$-gram frequency has the same ranking as the permutation. Codes, which are sets of feasible permutations, protect information stored in DNA molecules using the rank-modulation scheme, and read using the shotgun sequencing technique. We construct systematic codes with an efficient encoding algorithm, and show that they are optimal in size. The length of the DNA sequences that correspond to the codewords is shown to be polynomial in the code parameters. Non-systematic with larger size are also constructed.

Algorithmic aspects of arithmetical structures
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 640 (2022) 191-208 • View PublicationBIB
Arithmetical structures on graphs were first introduced in \cite{Lorenzini89}. Later in \cite{arithmetical} they were further studied in the setting of square non-negative integer matrices. In both cases, necessary and sufficient conditions for the finiteness of the set of arithmetical structures were given. More precisely, an arithmetical structure on a non-negative integer matrix $L$ with zero diagonal is a pair $(\mathbf{d},\mathbf{r})\in \mathbb{N}_+^n\times \mathbb{N}_+^n$ such that \[ (\textrm{Diag}(\mathbf{d})-L)\mathbf{r}^t=\mathbf{0}^t\text{ and }\gcd(r_1,\ldots,r_n)=1. \] Thus, arithmetical structures on $L$ are solutions of the polynomial Diophantine equation \[ f_L(X):=\det(\text{Diag}(X)-L)=0. \] Therefore, it is of interest to ask for an algorithm that compute them. We present an algorithm that computes arithmetical structures on a square integer non-negative matrix $L$ with zero diagonal. In order to do this we introduce a new class of Z-matrices, which we call quasi $M$-matrices.
On the depth of binomial edge ideals of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a graph on the vertex set $[n]$ and $J_G$ the associated binomial edge ideal in the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n,y_1,\ldots,y_n]$. In this paper we investigate the depth of binomial edge ideals. More precisely, we first establish a combinatorial lower bound for the depth of $S/J_G$ based on some graphical invariants of $G$. Next, we combinatorially characterize all binomial edge ideals $J_G$ with $\mathrm{depth}\hspace{1.2mm}S/J_G=5$. To achieve this goal, we associate a new poset $\mathcal{M}_G$ with the binomial edge ideal of $G$, and then elaborate some topological properties of certain subposets of $\mathcal{M}_G$ in order to compute some local cohomology modules of $S/J_G$.

Hypersurface singularities with monomial Jacobian ideal
Published in Bull. London Math. Soc. 54,3 (2022), 1067-1081 • View PublicationBIB
We show that every convergent power series with monomial extended Jacobian ideal is right equivalent to a Thom-Sebastiani polynomial. This solves a problem posed by Hauser and Schicho. On the combinatorial side, we introduce a notion of Jacobian semigroup ideal involving a transversal matroid. For any such ideal we construct a defining Thom-Sebastiani polynomial. On the analytic side, we show that power series with a quasihomogeneous extended Jacobian ideal are strongly Euler homogeneous. Due to a Mather-Yau-type theorem, such power series are determined by their Jacobian ideal up to right equivalence.

Hankel determinants of linear combinations of moments of orthogonal polynomials, II
Published in Ramanujan J. 61 (2023), 597-627 • View PublicationBIB
We present a formula that expresses the Hankel determinants of a linear combination of length $d+1$ of moments of orthogonal polynomials in terms of a $d\times d$ determinant of the orthogonal polynomials. This formula exists somehow hidden in the folklore of the theory of orthogonal polynomials but deserves to be better known, and be presented correctly and with full proof. We present four fundamentally different proofs, one that uses classical formulae from the theory of orthogonal polynomials, one that uses a vanishing argument and is due to Elouafi [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 431} (2015), 1253-1274] (but given in an incomplete form there), one that is inspired by random matrix theory and is due to Brézin and Hikami [Comm. Math. Phys. 214 (2000), 111-135], and one that uses (Dodgson) condensation. We give two applications of the formula. In the first application, we explain how to compute such Hankel determinants in a singular case. The second application concerns the linear recurrence of such Hankel determinants for a certain class of moments that covers numerous classical combinatorial sequences, including Catalan numbers, Motzkin numbers, central binomial coefficients, central trinomial coefficients, central Delannoy numbers, Schröder numbers, Riordan numbers, and Fine numbers.

Transformations of Rectangular Dualizable Graphs
A plane graph is said to be a rectangular graph if each of its edges can be oriented horizontal or vertical, its internal regions are four-sided and it has a rectangular enclosure. If dual of a planar graph is a rectangular graph, then the graph is said to be a rectangular dualizable graph (RDG). In this paper, we present adjacency transformations between RDGs and present polynomial time algorithms for their transformations. An RDG $\mathcal{G}=(V, E)$ is called maximal RDG (MRDG) if there does not exist an RDG $\mathcal{G'}=(V, E')$ with $E' \supset E$. An RDG $\mathcal{G}=(V, E)$ is said to be an edge-reducible if there exists an RDG $\mathcal{G'}=(V, E')$ such that $E\supset E'$. If an RDG is not edge-reducible, it is said to be an edge-irreducible RDG. We show that there always exists an MRDG for a given RDG. We also show that an MRDG is edge-reducible and can always be transformed to a minimal one (an edge-irreducible RDG).

On the Seidel spectrum of threshold graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we analyse spectral properties of Seidel matrix (denoted by $S$) of connected threshold graphs. We compute the characteristic polynomial and determinant of Seidel matrix of threshold graphs. We derive formulas for the multiplicity of the eigenvalues $\pm 1$ of $S$. Further we determine threshold graphs with at most 5 distinct Seidel eigenvalues. Finally we construct families of Seidel cospectral threshold graphs.

$w$-Dominating Set Problem on Graphs of Bounded Treewidth
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph. Let $w$ be a positive integer. A $w$-dominating set is a vertex subset $S$ such that for all $v\in V$, either $v\in S$ or it has at least $w$ neighbors in $S$. The $w$-Dominating Set problem is to find the minimum $w$-dominating set. The $L$-Max $w$-Dominating Set problem is to find the vertex subset $S$ of cardinality at most $L$ that maximizes $|S|+|\{v\in V\setminus S~|~|N(v)\cap S|\geq w\}|$, where $N(v)=\{u|uv\in E\}$. In this paper, we give polynomial time algorithms to $w$-Dominating Set problem and $L$-Max $w$-Dominating Set problem on graphs of bounded treewidth.

$q$-deformations of the modular group and of the real quadratic irrational numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop further the theory of $q$-deformations of real numbers introduced by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko, and focus in particular on the class of real quadratic irrationals. Our key tool is a $q$-deformation of the modular group $PSL_q(2,\mathbb{Z})$. The action of the modular group by Möbius transformations commutes with the $q$-deformations. We prove that the traces of the elements of $PSL_q(2,\mathbb{Z})$ are palindromic polynomials with positive coefficients. These traces appear in the explicit expressions of the $q$-deformed quadratic irrationals.
