On sums related to central binomial and trinomial coefficients
Published in In: M. B. Nathanson (ed.), Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory: CANT 2011 and 2012, in: Springer Proc. in Math. & Stat., Vol. 101, Springer, New York, 2014, pp. 257-312 • View PublicationBIB
A generalized central trinomial coefficient $T_n(b,c)$ is the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^n$ with $b,c\in\mathbb Z$. In this paper we investigate congruences and series for sums of terms related to central binomial coefficients and generalized central trinomial coefficients. The paper contains many conjectures on congruences related to representations of primes by certain binary quadratic forms, and 62 proposed new series for $1/π$ motivated by congruences and related dualities.

Congruences involving generalized central trinomial coefficients
Published in Sci. China Math. 57(2014), 1375-1400 • View PublicationBIB
For integers $b$ and $c$ the generalized central trinomial coefficient $T_n(b,c)$ denotes the coefficient of $x^n$ in the expansion of $(x^2+bx+c)^n$. Those $T_n=T_n(1,1)\ (n=0,1,2,\ldots)$ are the usual central trinomial coefficients, and $T_n(3,2)$ coincides with the Delannoy number $D_n=\sum_{k=0}^n\binom nk\binom{n+k}k$ in combinatorics. We investigate congruences involving generalized central trinomial coefficients systematically. Here are some typical results: For each $n=1,2,3,\ldots$ we have $$\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)T_k(b,c)^2(b^2-4c)^{n-1-k}\equiv0\pmod{n^2}$$ and in particular $n^2\mid\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}(2k+1)D_k^2$; if $p$ is an odd prime then $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}T_k^2\equiv\left(\frac{-1}p\right)\ \pmod{p}\ \ \ {\rm and}\ \ \ \sum_{k=0}^{p-1}D_k^2\equiv\left(\frac 2p\right)\ \pmod{p},$$ where $(-)$ denotes the Legendre symbol. We also raise several conjectures some of which involve parameters in the representations of primes by certain binary quadratic forms.

Quadratic forms and four partition functions modulo 3
Published in Integers, 11, no. 1, (2011) 47-53 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Andrews, Hirschhorn and Sellers have proven congruences modulo 3 for four types of partitions using elementary series manipulations. In this paper, we generalize their congruences using arithmetic properties of certain quadratic forms.

Partial difference sets from quadratic forms and $p$-ary weakly regular bent functions
We generalize the construction of affine polar graphs in two different ways to obtain new partial difference sets and amorphic association schemes. The first generalization uses a combination of quadratic forms and uniform cyclotomy. In the second generalization we replace the quadratic form in the affine polar graph construction by higher degree homogeneous functions that are $p$-ary weakly regular bent. The negative Latin square type partial difference sets arising from the first generalization are new.

Open Conjectures on Congruences
We collect here various conjectures on congruences made by the author in a series of papers, some of which involve binary quadratic forms and other advanced theories. Part A consists of 100 unsolved conjectures of the author while conjectures in Part B have been recently confirmed. We hope that this material will interest number theorists and stimulate further research. Number theorists are welcome to work on those open conjectures; for some of them we offer prizes for the first correct proofs.

On the Structure of Cubic and Quartic Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we study the structure of polynomials of degree three and four that have high bias or high Gowers norm, over arbitrary prime fields. In particular we obtain the following results. 1. We give a canonical representation for degree three or four polynomials that have a significant bias (i.e. they are not equidistributed). This result generalizes the corresponding results from the theory of quadratic forms. It also significantly improves the results of Green and Tao and Kaufman and Lovett for such polynomials. 2. For the case of degree four polynomials with high Gowers norm we show that (a subspace of co-dimension O(1) of) F^n can be partitioned to subspaces of dimension Omega(n) such that on each of the subspaces the polynomial is equal to some degree three polynomial. It was shown by Green and Tao and by Lovett, Meshulam and Samorodnitsky that a quartic polynomial with a high Gowers norm is not necessarily correlated with any cubic polynomial. Our result shows that a slightly weaker statement does hold. The proof is based on finding a structure in the space of partial derivatives of the underlying polynomial.

On representation of an integer as a sum by X^2+Y^2+Z^2 and the modular equations of degree 3 and 5
Published • View PublicationBIB
I discuss a variety of results involving s(n), the number of representations of n as a sum of three squares. One of my objectives is to reveal numerous interesting connections between the properties of this function and certain modular equations of degree 3 and 5. In particular, I show that s(25n)=(6-(-n|5))s(n)-5s(n/25) follows easily from the well known Ramanujan modular equation of degree 5. Moreover, I establish new relations between s(n) and h(n), g(n), the number of representations of $n$ by the ternary quadratic forms 2x^2+2y^2+2z^2-yz+zx+xy and x^2+y^2+3z^2+xy, respectively. I propose an interesting identity for s(p^2n)- p s(n) with p being an odd prime. This identity makes nontrivial use of the ternary quadratic forms with discriminants p^2, 16p^2.

Ternary Quadratic Forms, Modular Equations and Certain Positivity Conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that many of Ramanujan's modular equations of degree 3 can be interpreted in terms of integral ternary quadratic forms. This way we establish that for any n in N |{n= x(x+1)/2 + y^2 +z^2 : x,y,z in Z}| >= |{n= x(x+1)/2 + 3y^2 +3z^2: x,y,zin Z}|, just to mention one among many similar positive results of this type. In particular, we prove the recent conjecture of H. Yesilyurt and the first author stating that for any n in N |{n= x(x+1)/2 + y^2 +z^2 : x,y,z in Z}| >= |{n= x(x+1)/2 + 7y^2 + 7z^2: x,y,z in Z}|. We prove a variety of identities for certain ternary forms with discriminants 144,400, 784,3600 by converting these into identities for appropriate eta- quotients. In the process we discover and prove a few new modular equations of degree 5 and 7. For any square free odd integer S with prime factorization p_1.....p_r, we define the S-genus as a union of 2^r specially selected genera of ternary quadratic forms, all with discriminant 16 S^2. This notion of S-genus arises naturally in the course of our investigation. It entails an interesting injection from genera of binary quadratic forms with discriminant -8 S to genera of ternary quadratic forms with discriminant 16 S^2.

On universal sums of polygonal numbers
Published in Sci. China Math. 58(2015), 1367-1396 • View PublicationBIB
For $m=3,4,\ldots$, the polygonal numbers of order $m$ are given by $p_m(n)=(m-2)\binom n2+n\ (n=0,1,2,\ldots)$. For positive integers $a,b,c$ and $i,j,k\ge3$ with $\max\{i,j,k\}\ge5$, we call the triple $(ap_i,bp_j,cp_k)$ universal if for any $n=0,1,2,\ldots$ there are nonnegative integers $x,y,z$ such that $n=ap_i(x)+bp_j(y)+cp_k(z)$. We show that there are only 95 candidates for universal triples (two of which are $(p_4,p_5,p_6)$ and $(p_3,p_4,p_{27})$), and conjecture that they are indeed universal triples. For many triples $(ap_i,bp_j,cp_k)$ (including $(p_3,4p_4,p_5),(p_4,p_5,p_6)$ and $(p_4,p_4,p_5)$), we prove that any nonnegative integer can be written in the form $ap_i(x)+bp_j(y)+cp_k(z)$ with $x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. We also show some related new results on ternary quadratic forms, one of which states that any nonnegative integer $n\equiv 1\pmod{6}$ can be written in the form $x^2+3y^2+24z^2$ with $x,y,z\in\mathbb Z$. In addition, we pose several related conjectures one of which states that for any $m=3,4,\ldots$ each natural number can be expressed as $p_{m+1}(x_1)+p_{m+2}(x_2)+p_{m+3}(x_3)+r$ with $x_1,x_2,x_3\in\{0,1,2,\ldots\}$ and $r\in\{0,\ldots,m-3\}$.

Bilinear and Quadratic Variants on the Littlewood-Offord Problem
Published in Israel Journal of Mathematics, Vol 194 (2013), pg. 359-394 • View PublicationBIB
If f(x_1, x_2, ..., x_n) is a polynomial dependent on a large number of independent Bernoulli random variables, what can be said about the maximum concentration of f on any single value? For linear polynomials, this reduces to one version of the classical Littlewood-Offord problem: Given nonzero constants a_1 through a_n, what is the maximum number of sums of the form +/- a_1 +/- a_2 +/-... +/- a_n which take on any single value? Here we consider the case where f is either a bilinear form or a quadratic form. For the bilinear case, we show that the only forms having concentration significantly larger than n^{-1} are those which are in a certain sense very close to being degenerate. For the quadratic case, we show that no form having many nonzero coefficients has concentration significantly larger than n^{-1/2}. In both cases the results are nearly tight.

On almost universal mixed sums of squares and triangular numbers
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 362(2010), no.12, 6425--6455 • View PublicationBIB
In 1997 K. Ono and K. Soundararajan [Invent. Math. 130(1997)] proved that under the generalized Riemann hypothesis any positive odd integer greater than 2719 can be represented by the famous Ramanujan form $x^2+y^2+10z^2$, equivalently the form $2x^2+5y^2+4T_z$ represents all integers greater than 1359, where $T_z$ denotes the triangular number $z(z+1)/2$. Given positive integers $a,b,c$ we employ modular forms and the theory of quadratic forms to determine completely when the general form $ax^2+by^2+cT_z$ represents sufficiently large integers and establish similar results for the forms $ax^2+bT_y+cT_z$ and $aT_x+bT_y+cT_z$. Here are some consequences of our main theorems: (i) All sufficiently large odd numbers have the form $2ax^2+y^2+z^2$ if and only if all prime divisors of $a$ are congruent to 1 modulo 4. (ii) The form $ax^2+y^2+T_z$ is almost universal (i.e., it represents sufficiently large integers) if and only if each odd prime divisor of $a$ is congruent to 1 or 3 modulo 8. (iii) $ax^2+T_y+T_z$ is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of $a$ are congruent to 1 modulo 4. (iv) When $v_2(a)\not=3$, the form $aT_x+T_y+T_z$ is almost universal if and only if all odd prime divisors of $a$ are congruent to 1 modulo 4 and $v_2(a)\not=5,7,...$, where $v_2(a)$ is the 2-adic order of $a$.

On the representations of integers by the sextenary quadratic form x^2+y^2+z^2+ 7s^2+7t^2+ 7u^2 and 7-cores
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we derive an explicit formula for the number of representations of an integer by the sextenary form x^2+y^2+z^2+ 7s^2+7t^2+ 7u^2. We establish the following intriguing inequalities 2b(n)>=a_7(n)>=b(n) for n not equal to 0,2,6,16. Here a_7(n) is the number of partitions of n that are 7-cores and b(n) is the number of representations of n+2 by the sextenary form (x ^2+ y ^2+z ^2+ 7s ^2 + 7t ^2+ 7u^2)/8 with x,y,z,s,t and u being odd.

Extremality and designs in spaces of quadratic forms
A well known theorem of Voronoi caracterizes extreme quadratic forms and Euclidean lattices, that is those which are local maxima for the Hermite function, as perfect and eutactic. This caracterization has been extended in various cases, such that family of lattices, sections of lattices, Humbert forms, etc. Moreover, there is a criterion for extreme lattices, discovered by Venkov, formulated in terms of spherical designs which has been extended in the case of Grassmannians and sections of lattices. In this article, we define a general frame, in which there is a ``Voronoi characterization'', and a ``Venkov criterion'' through an appropriate notion of design. This frame encompasses many interesting situations in which a ``Voronoi characterization'' has been proved. We also discuss the question of extremality relatively to the Epstein zeta function, and we extend to our frame a characterization of final zeta-extremality formulated by Delone and Ryshkov and a criterion in terms of designs found by Coulangeon.

Overpartitions and class numbers of binary quadratic forms

We show that the Zagier-Eisenstein series shares its non-holomorphic part with certain weak Maass forms whose holomorphic parts are generating functions for overpartition rank differences. This has a number of consequences, including exact formulas, asymptotics, and congruences for the rank differences as well as $q$-series identities of the mock theta type.

Discrete sums of classical symbols on Z^d and zeta functions associated with Laplacians on tori
We prove the uniqueness of a translation invariant extension to non integer order classical symbols of the ordinary discrete sum on $L^1$-symbols, which we then describe using an Hadamard finite part procedure for sums over integer points of infinite unions of nested convex polytopes in $\R^d$. This canonical regularised sum is the building block to construct meromorphic extensions of the ordinary sum on holomorphic symbols. Explicit formulae for the complex residues at their poles are given in terms of noncommutative residues of classical symbols, thus extending results of Guillemin, Sternberg and Weitsman. These formulae are then applied to zeta functions associated with quadratic forms and with Laplacians on tori.

Ramanujan's Identities and Representation of Integers by Certain Binary and Quaternary Quadratic Forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We revisit old conjectures of Fermat and Euler regarding representation of integers by binary quadratic form x^2+5y^2. Making use of Ramanujan's_1ψ_1 summation formula we establish a new Lambert series identity for \sum_{n,m=-\infty}^{\infty} q^{n^2+5m^2}. Conjectures of Fermat and Euler are shown to follow easily from this new formula. But we don't stop there. Employing various formulas found in Ramanujan's notebooks and using a bit of ingenuity we obtaina collection of new Lambert series for certain infinite products associated with quadratic forms such as x^2+6y^2, 2x^2+3y^2, x^2+15y^2, 3x^2+5y^2, x^2+27y^2, x^2+5(y^2+ z^2+ w^2), 5x^2+y^2+ z^2+ w^2. In the process, we find many new multiplicative eta-quotients and determine their coefficients.

The computational complexity of convex bodies
Published • View PublicationBIB
We discuss how well a given convex body B in a real d-dimensional vector space V can be approximated by a set X for which the membership question: ``given an x in V, does x belong to X?'' can be answered efficiently (in time polynomial in d). We discuss approximations of a convex body by an ellipsoid, by an algebraic hypersurface, by a projection of a polytope with a controlled number of facets, and by a section of the cone of positive semidefinite quadratic forms. We illustrate some of the results on the Traveling Salesman Polytope, an example of a complicated convex body studied in combinatorial optimization.

A Positive Semidefinite Approximation of the Symmetric Traveling Salesman Polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a convex body B in a vector space V, we construct its approximation P_k, k=1, 2, . . . using an intersection of a cone of positive semidefinite quadratic forms with an affine subspace. We show that P_k is contained in B for each k. When B is the Symmetric Traveling Salesman Polytope on n cities T_n, we show that the scaling of P_k by n/k+ O(1/n) contains T_n for k no more than n/2. Membership for P_k is computable in time polynomial in n (of degree linear in k). We discuss facets of T_n that lie on the boundary of P_k. We introduce a new measure on each facet defining inequality for T_n in terms of the eigenvalues of a quadratic form. Using these eigenvalues of facets, we show that the scaling of P_1 by n^(1/2) has all of the facets of T_n defined by the subtour elimination constraints either in its interior or lying on its boundary.

Supertopes
A perfect (Delaunay) ellipsoid is an ellipsoid in n-dimensional Euclidean space that does not contain integral points in its interior, but is uniquely defined by integral points that lie on its surface. A perfect Delaunay polytope with respect to a positive quadratic form f() is a polytope with integral vertices that is circumscribed by a perfect Delaunay ellipsoid with an equation whose quadratic part is f(). This document has been corrected on January 15, 2005. Note that it represents the state of the area as of the end of 2002. Amorphic association schemes with negative Latin square type graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Applying results from partial difference sets, quadratic forms, and recent results of Brouwer and Van Dam, we construct the first known amorphic association scheme with negative Latin square type graphs and whose underlying set is a non-elementary abelian 2-group. We give a simple proof of a result of Hamilton that generalizes Brouwer's result. We use multiple distinct quadratic forms to construct amorphic association schemes with a large number of classes.
