Counting Zeros in Random Walks on the Integers and Analysis of Optimal Dual-Pivot Quicksort
We present an average case analysis of two variants of dual-pivot quicksort, one with a non-algorithmic comparison-optimal partitioning strategy, the other with a closely related algorithmic strategy. For both we calculate the expected number of comparisons exactly as well as asymptotically, in particular, we provide exact expressions for the linear, logarithmic, and constant terms. An essential step is the analysis of zeros of lattice paths in a certain probability model. Along the way a combinatorial identity is proven.

Extreme values of the stationary distribution of random walks on directed graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We examine the stationary distribution of random walks on directed graphs. In particular, we focus on the {\em principal ratio}, which is the ratio of maximum to minimum values of vertices in the stationary distribution. We give an upper bound for this ratio over all strongly connected graphs on $n$ vertices. We characterize all graphs achieving the upper bound and we give explicit constructions for these extremal graphs. Additionally, we show that under certain conditions, the principal ratio is tightly bounded. We also provide counterexamples to show the principal ratio cannot be tightly bounded under weaker conditions.

Randomly juggling backwards
Published • View PublicationBIB
We recall the directed graph of _juggling states_, closed walks within which give juggling patterns, as studied by Ron Graham in [w/Chung, w/Butler]. Various random walks in this graph have been studied before by several authors, and their equilibrium distributions computed. We motivate a random walk on the reverse graph (and an enrichment thereof) from a very classical linear algebra problem, leading to a particularly simple equilibrium: a Boltzmann distribution closely related to the Poincaré series of the b-Grassmannian in infinite-dimensional space. We determine the most likely asymptotic state in the limit of many balls, where in the limit the probability of a 0-throw is kept fixed.

Conservative and semiconservative random walks: recurrence and transience
Published in Journal of Theoretical Probability (2018) 31, issue 3, pages 1900-1922 • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper we define conservative and semiconservative random walks in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and study different families of random walks. The family of symmetric random walks is one of the families of conservative random walks, and simple (Pólya) random walks are their representatives. The classification of random walks given in the present paper enables us to provide a new approach to random walks in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ by reduction to birth-and-death processes. We construct nontrivial examples of recurrent random walks in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for any $d\geq3$ and transient random walks in $\mathbb{Z}^2$.

Crossings states and sets of states in Pólya random walks
Published in Methodolody and Computing in Applied Probability, 25 (2023), Issue 1, Article No. 28, 34 pp • View PublicationBIB
We consider the Pólya random walk in $\mathbb{Z}^2$. The paper establishes a number of results for the distributions and expectations of the number of usual (undirected) and specifically defined in the paper up- and down-directed state-crossings and different sets of states crossings. One of the most important results of this paper is that the expected number of undirected state-crossings $\mathbf{n}$ is equal to 1 for any state $\mathbf{n}\in\mathbb{Z}^2\setminus\{\mathbf{0}\}$. As well, the results of the paper are extended to $d$-dimensional random walks, $d\geq2$, in bounded areas.

Twisted patterns in large subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^N$
Let $E \subset \mathbb{Z}^N$ be a set of positive upper Banach density and let $Γ< \operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{Z})$ be a finitely generated, strongly irreducible subgroup whose Zariski closure in $\operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{R})$ is a Zariski connected semisimple group with no compact factors. Let $Y$ be any set and suppose that $Ψ: \mathbb{Z}^N \rightarrow Y$ is a $Γ$-invariant function. We prove that for every positive integer $m$, there exists a positive integer $k$ with the property that for every finite set $F \subset \mathbb{Z}^N$ with $|F| = m$, we have \[ Ψ(kF) \subset Ψ(E-b) \quad \textrm{for some $b \in E$}. \] Furthermore, if $E$ is an aperiodic Bohr$_o$-set, we can choose $k = 1$ and $b = 0$. As one of many applications of this result, we show that if $E_o \subset \mathbb{Z}$ has positive upper Banach density, then, for any integer $m$, there exists an integer $k$ with the property for \emph{every} finite set $F \subset \mathbb{Z}$, we can find $x,y,z \in E_o$ such that \[ k^2 F \subset \big\{ (u-x)^2 + (v-y)^2 - (w-z)^2 \, : \, u,v,w \in E_o \big\}. \] In particular, if $E_o \subset \mathbb{Z}$ is an aperiodic Bohr$_o$-set, then every integer can be written on the form $u^2 + v^2 - w^2$ for some $u,v,w \in E_o$. Our techniques use recent results by Benoist-Quint and Bourgain-Furman-Lindenstrauss-Mozes on equidistribution of random walks on automorphism groups of tori.

Infinite excursions of rotor walks on regular trees
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 24, Issue 2 (2017), Paper #P2.18 • Search Publication
A rotor configuration on a graph contains in every vertex an infinite ordered sequence of rotors, each is pointing to a neighbor of the vertex. After sampling a configuration according to some probability measure, a rotor walk is a deterministic process: at each step it chooses the next unused rotor in its current location, and uses it to jump to the neighboring vertex to which it points. Rotor walks capture many aspects of the expected behavior of simple random walks. However, this similarity breaks down for the property of having an infinite excursion. In this paper we study that question for natural random configuration models on regular trees. Our results suggest that in this context the rotor model behaves like the simple random walk unless it is not "close to" the standard rotor-router model.

Loop-Erased Random Surfaces
Loop-erased random walk and it's scaling limit, Schramm--Loewner evolution, have found numerous applications in mathematics and physics. We present a 2 dimensional analogue of LERW, the loop erased random surface. We do this by defining a 2 dimensional spanning tree and declaring that LERS should have the same relation to these 2 trees as LERW has to ordinary spanning trees. Furthermore we present numerical evidence that the growth rate for LERS on a $δ$ fine grid as $δ\to 0$ is $2.5269 \pm 0.0017$ and we hypothesize that it has an exact value of 48/19. This suggests the possibility of a fractal limiting object for LERS analogous to SLE for LERW.

Mixing time and eigenvalues of the abelian sandpile Markov chain
Published • View PublicationBIB
The abelian sandpile model defines a Markov chain whose states are integer-valued functions on the vertices of a simple connected graph $G$. By viewing this chain as a (nonreversible) random walk on an abelian group, we give a formula for its eigenvalues and eigenvectors in terms of `multiplicative harmonic functions' on the vertices of $G$. We show that the spectral gap of the sandpile chain is within a constant factor of the length of the shortest non-integer vector in the dual Laplacian lattice, while the mixing time is at most a constant times the smoothing parameter of the Laplacian lattice. We find a surprising inverse relationship between the spectral gap of the sandpile chain and that of simple random walk on $G$: If the latter has a sufficiently large spectral gap, then the former has a small gap! In the case where $G$ is the complete graph on $n$ vertices, we show that the sandpile chain exhibits cutoff at time $\frac{1}{4π^{2}}n^{3}\log n$.
Some advances on Sidorenko's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
A bipartite graph $H$ is said to have Sidorenko's property if the probability that the uniform random mapping from $V(H)$ to the vertex set of any graph $G$ is a homomorphism is at least the product over all edges in $H$ of the probability that the edge is mapped to an edge of $G$. In this paper, we provide three distinct families of bipartite graphs that have Sidorenko's property. First, using branching random walks, we develop an embedding algorithm which allows us to prove that bipartite graphs admitting a certain type of tree decomposition have Sidorenko's property. Second, we use the concept of locally dense graphs to prove that subdivisions of certain graphs, including cliques, have Sidorenko's property. Third, we prove that if $H$ has Sidorenko's property, then the Cartesian product of $H$ with an even cycle also has Sidorenko's property.

Counting Restricted Dyck Paths Through Random Walks
We show connection between Dyck paths with peaks of bounded height and random walks. The correspondence between a certain class of random walks and such Dyck paths allows us to develop a probabilistic perspective on Chebyshev polynomials.
Convex hulls of random walks, hyperplane arrangements, and Weyl chambers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit formula for the probability that the convex hull of an $n$-step random walk in $R^d$ does not contain the origin, under the assumption that the distribution of increments of the walk is centrally symmetric and puts no mass on affine hyperplanes. This extends the formula by Sparre Andersen (1949) for the probability that such random walk in dimension one stays positive. Our result is distribution-free, that is, the probability does not depend on the distribution of increments. This probabilistic problem is shown to be equivalent to either of the two geometric ones: 1) Find the number of Weyl chambers of type $B_n$ intersected by a generic linear subspace of $R^n$ of codimension $d$; 2) Find the conic intrinsic volumes of a Weyl chamber of type $B_n$. We solve the first geometric problem using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. A by-product of our method is a new simple proof of the general formula by Klivans and Swartz (2011) relating the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a linear hyperplane arrangement to the conic intrinsic volumes of the chambers constituting its complement. We obtain analogous distribution-free results for Weyl chambers of type $A_{n-1}$ (yielding the probability of absorption of the origin by the convex hull of a generic random walk bridge), type $D_n$, and direct products of Weyl chambers (yielding the absorption probability for the joint convex hull of several random walks or bridges). The simplest case of products of the form $B_1\times \dots \times B_1$ recovers the Wendel formula (1962) for the probability that the convex hull of an i.i.d. multidimensional sample chosen from a centrally symmetric distribution does not contain the origin. We also give an asymptotic analysis of the obtained absorption probabilities as $n \to \infty$, in both cases of fixed and increasing dimension $d$.

The normalized Laplacian spectrum of subdivisions of a graph
Published in Applied Mathematics and Computation, 2016, 286: 250-256 • View PublicationBIB
Determining and analyzing the spectra of graphs is an important and exciting research topic in theoretical computer science. The eigenvalues of the normalized Laplacian of a graph provide information on its structural properties and also on some relevant dynamical aspects, in particular those related to random walks. In this paper, we give the spectra of the normalized Laplacian of iterated subdivisions of simple connected graphs. As an example of application of these results we find the exact values of their multiplicative degree-Kirchhoff index, Kemeny's constant and number of spanning trees.

In this paper we determine the spectra of the normalized Laplacian of iterated triangulations of a generic simple connected graph. Random walks on semaphore codes and delay de Bruijn semigroups
Published in International Journal of Algebra and Computation 26(4) (2016) 635-673 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a new approach to random walks on de Bruijn graphs over the alphabet $A$ through right congruences on $A^k$, defined using the natural right action of $A^+$. A major role is played by special right congruences, which correspond to semaphore codes and allow an easier computation of the hitting time. We show how right congruences can be approximated by special right congruences.
On the trace of random walks on random graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study graph-theoretic properties of the trace of a random walk on a random graph. We show that for any $\varepsilon>0$ there exists $C>1$ such that the trace of the simple random walk of length $(1+\varepsilon)n\ln{n}$ on the random graph $G\sim G(n,p)$ for $p>C\ln{n}/n$ is, with high probability, Hamiltonian and $Θ(\ln{n})$-connected. In the special case $p=1$ (i.e. when $G=K_n$), we show a hitting time result according to which, with high probability, exactly one step after the last vertex has been visited, the trace becomes Hamiltonian, and one step after the last vertex has been visited for the $k$'th time, the trace becomes $2k$-connected.

Random walk on sparse random digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A finite ergodic Markov chain exhibits cutoff if its distance to equilibrium remains close to its initial value over a certain number of iterations and then abruptly drops to near 0 on a much shorter time scale. Originally discovered in the context of card shuffling (Aldous-Diaconis, 1986), this remarkable phenomenon is now rigorously established for many reversible chains. Here we consider the non-reversible case of random walks on sparse directed graphs, for which even the equilibrium measure is far from being understood. We work under the configuration model, allowing both the in-degrees and the out-degrees to be freely specified. We establish the cutoff phenomenon, determine its precise window and prove that the cutoff profile approaches a universal shape. We also provide a detailed description of the equilibrium measure.
Cell complexes, poset topology and the representation theory of algebras arising in algebraic combinatorics and discrete geometry
Published • View PublicationBIB
In recent years it has been noted that a number of combinatorial structures such as real and complex hyperplane arrangements, interval greedoids, matroids and oriented matroids have the structure of a finite monoid called a left regular band. Random walks on the monoid model a number of interesting Markov chains such as the Tsetlin library and riffle shuffle. The representation theory of left regular bands then comes into play and has had a major influence on both the combinatorics and the probability theory associated to such structures. In a recent paper, the authors established a close connection between algebraic and combinatorial invariants of a left regular band by showing that certain homological invariants of the algebra of a left regular band coincide with the cohomology of order complexes of posets naturally associated to the left regular band. The purpose of the present monograph is to further develop and deepen the connection between left regular bands and poset topology. This allows us to compute finite projective resolutions of all simple modules of left regular band algebras over fields and much more. In the process, we are led to define the class of CW left regular bands as the class of left regular bands whose associated posets are the face posets of regular CW complexes. Most of the examples that have arisen in the literature belong to this class. A new and important class of examples is a left regular band structure on the face poset of a CAT(0) cube complex. Also, the recently introduced notion of a COM (complex of oriented matroids or conditional oriented matroid) fits nicely into our setting and includes CAT(0) cube complexes and certain more general CAT(0) zonotopal complexes. A fairly complete picture of the representation theory for CW left regular bands is obtained.
Distance regularity in buildings and structure constants in Hecke algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we define generalised spheres in buildings using the simplicial structure and Weyl distance in the building, and we derive an explicit formula for the cardinality of these spheres. We prove a generalised notion of distance regularity in buildings, and develop a combinatorial formula for the cardinalities of intersections of generalised spheres. Motivated by the classical study of algebras associated to distance regular graphs we investigate the algebras and modules of Hecke operators arising from our generalised distance regularity, and prove isomorphisms between these algebras and more well known parabolic Hecke algebras. We conclude with applications of our main results to non-negativity of structure constants in parabolic Hecke algebras, commutativity of algebras of Hecke operators, double coset combinatorics in groups with $BN$-pairs, and random walks on the simplices of buildings.

Anti-concentration of inhomogeneous random walks
We provide a characterization for anti-concentration of inhomogeneous random walks in non-abelian groups. In application we extend the classical bounds by Erdos-Littlewood-Offord and Sarkozy-Szemeredi to non-abelian settings.
