A statistical-mechanical study of the effect of constraint relaxation on the minimum vertex cover problem in Erdős-Rényi random graphs is presented. Using a penalty-method formulation for constraint relaxation, typical properties of solutions, including infeasible solutions that violate the constraints, are analyzed by means of the replica method and cavity method. The problem involves a competition between reducing the number of vertices to be covered and satisfying the edge constraints. The analysis under the replica-symmetric (RS) ansatz clarifies that the competition leads to degeneracies in the vertex and edge states, which determine the quantitative properties of the system, such as the cover and penalty ratios. A precise analysis of these effects improves the accuracy of RS approximation for the minimum cover ratio in the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) region. Furthermore, the analysis based on the RS cavity method indicates that the RS/RSB boundary of the ground states with respect to the mean degree of the graphs is expanded, and the critical temperature is lowered by constraint relaxation.

In a recent breakthrough, Kelley and Meka (FOCS 2023) obtained a strong upper bound on the density of sets of integers without nontrivial three-term arithmetic progressions. In this work, we extend their result, establishing similar bounds for all linear patterns defined by binary systems of linear forms, where "binary" indicates that every linear form depends on exactly two variables. Prior to our work, no strong bounds were known for such systems even in the finite field model setting. A key ingredient in our proof is a graph counting lemma. The classical graph counting lemma, developed by Thomason (Random Graphs 1985) and Chung, Graham, and Wilson (Combinatorica 1989), is a fundamental tool in combinatorics. For a fixed graph $H$, it states that the number of copies of $H$ in a pseudorandom graph $G$ is similar to the number of copies of $H$ in a purely random graph with the same edge density as $G$. However, this lemma is only non-trivial when $G$ is a dense graph. In this work, we prove a graph counting lemma that is also effective when $G$ is sparse. Moreover, our lemma is well-suited for density increment arguments in additive number theory. As an immediate application, we obtain a strong bound for the Turán problem in abelian Cayley sum graphs: let $Γ$ be a finite abelian group with odd order. If a Cayley sum graph on $Γ$ does not contain any $r$-clique as a subgraph, it must have at most $2^{-Ω_r(\log^{1/16}|Γ|)}\cdot |Γ|^2$ edges. These results hinge on the technology developed by Kelley and Meka and the follow-up work by Kelley, Lovett, and Meka (STOC 2024).
Soft random simplicial complexes
A soft random graph $G(n,r,p)$ can be obtained from the random geometric graph $G(n,r)$ by keeping every edge in $G(n,r)$ with probability $p$. This random graph is a particular case of the soft random graph model introduced by Penrose, in which the probability between 2 vertices is a function that depends on the distance between them. In this article, we define models for random simplicial complexes built over the soft random graph $G(n,r,p)$, which also present randomness in all other dimensions. Furthermore, we study the homology of those random simplicial complexes in different regimes of $n,r$, and $p$ by giving asymptotic formulas for the expectation of the Betti numbers in the sparser regimes, and bounds in the denser regimes.
Symmetry and asymmetry between positive and negative square energies of graphs
The positive and negative square energies of a graph, $s^+(G)$ and $s^-(G)$, are the sums of squares of the positive and negative eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix, respectively. The first results on square energies revealed symmetry between $s^+(G)$ and $s^-(G)$. This paper reviews examples of asymmetry between these parameters, for example using large random graphs and the ratios $s^+/s^-$ and $s^-/s^+$, as well as new examples of symmetry. We answer some questions previously asked about $s^{+}$ and $s^{-}$ and suggest several further avenues of research.

In this work, we study the concept of self-overlapping permutations, which is related to the larger study of consecutive patterns in permutations. We show that this concept admits a simple and clear geometrical meaning, and prove that a permutation can be represented as a sequence of non-self-overlapping ones. The above structural decomposition allows us to obtain equations for the corresponding generating functions, as well as the complete asymptotic expansions for the probability that a large random permutation is (non-)self-overlapping. In particular, we show that almost all permutations are non-self-overlapping, and that the corresponding asymptotic expansion has the self-reference property: the involved coefficients count non-self-overlapping permutations once again. We also establish complete asymptotic expansions of the distributions of very tight non-self-overlapping patterns, and discuss the similarities of the non-self-overlapping permutations to other permutation building blocks, such as indecomposable and simple permutations, as well as their associated asymptotics.
Critical Exponent for the Acyclic Chromatic Number of Random Graphs
In this paper we study acyclic colouring in the random subgraph $\mathit{G}$ of the complete graph $\mathit{K}_n$ on $\mathit{n}$ vertices where each edge is present with probability $\mathit{p}$; independent of the other edges. We show that the acyclic chromatic number exhibits a phase transition from sublinear to linear growth as the edge probability increases, even in the sparse regime and obtain estimates for the critical exponent. Next, we introduce a relaxation by allowing for a small fraction of "bad" cycles to violate the acyclic colouring condition and show that the critical exponent in this case is in fact zero, no matter how small the fraction.
Linearity Property of Unique Colourings in Random Graphs
In this paper, we study unique colourings in random graphs as a generalization of both conflict-free and injective colourings. Specifically, we impose the condition that a fraction of vertices in the neighbourhood of any vertex are assigned unique colours and use vertex partitioning and the probabilistic method to show that the minimum number of colours needed grows linearly with the uniqueness parameter, unlike both conflict-free and injective colourings. We argue how the unboundedness of the vertex neighbourhoods influences the linearity property and illustrate our case with an example involving treeunique colourings in random graphs.
Linearity and Local Correctness in Weighted Colourings of Random Graphs
In this paper, we consider a weighted generalization of the chromatic number of a Binomial random graph~\(G.\) We equip each edge with a random weight and then colour the vertices in such a way that the absolute colour difference between any two adjacent vertices is at least as large as their edge weight. We show that with high probability, the weighted colouring number grows linearly with the maximum vertex degree if the edge weights have sufficiently large moments. Conversely, if the edge weight moments are unbounded then the weighted chromatic number is much larger than the maximum vertex degree, with high probability. We also obtain a sharp threshold result for locally correct weighted colourings for balanced subgraphs of~\(G.\)
Word Measures on Wreath Products II
Every word $w$ in $F_r$, the free group of rank $r$, induces a probability measure (the $w$-measure) on every finite group $G$, by substitution of random $G$-elements in the letters. This measure is determined by its Fourier coefficients: the $w$-expectations $E_w[χ]$ of the irreducible characters of $G$. For every finite group $G$, every stable character $χ$ of $G\wr S_n$ (trace of a finitely generated $FI_G$-module), and every word $w\in F_r$, we approximate $E_w[χ]$ up to an error term of $O(n^{-π(w)})$, where $π(w)$ is the primitivity rank of $w$. This generalizes previous works by Puder, Hanany, Magee and the author. As an application we show that random Schreier graphs of representation-stable actions of $G\wr S_n$ are close-to-optimal expanders. The paper reveals a surprising relation between stable representation theory of wreath products and not-necessarily connected Stallings core graphs.
Weighted tree games
We consider a variation on Maker-Breaker games on graphs or digraphs where the edges have random costs. We assume that Maker wishes to choose the edges of a spanning tree, but wishes to minimise his cost. Meanwhile Breaker wants to make Maker's cost as large as possible.
Bounded quantifier depth spectrum for random uniform hypegraphs
The notion of spectrum for first-order properties introduced by J. Spencer for Erdos-Renyi random graph is considered in relation to random uniform hypergraphs. In this work we study the set of limit points of the spectrum for first-order formulae with bounded quantifier depth and obtain bounds for its maximum value. Moreover, we prove zero-one k-laws for the random uniform hypergraph and improve the bounds for the maximum value of the spectrum for first-order formulae with bounded quantifier depth. We obtain that the maximum value of the spectrum belongs to some two-element set.

The asymptotic behavior of the Jaccard index in $G(n,p)$, the classical Erdös-Rényi random graphs model, is studied in this paper, as $n$ goes to infinity. We first derive the asymptotic distribution of the Jaccard index of any pair of distinct vertices, as well as the first two moments of this index. Then the average of the Jaccard indices over all vertex pairs in $G(n,p)$ is shown to be asymptotically normal under an additional mild condition that $np\to\infty$ and $n^2(1-p)\to\infty$.
Polynomially Over-Parameterized Convolutional Neural Networks Contain Structured Strong Winning Lottery Tickets
The Strong Lottery Ticket Hypothesis (SLTH) states that randomly-initialised neural networks likely contain subnetworks that perform well without any training. Although unstructured pruning has been extensively studied in this context, its structured counterpart, which can deliver significant computational and memory efficiency gains, has been largely unexplored. One of the main reasons for this gap is the limitations of the underlying mathematical tools used in formal analyses of the SLTH. In this paper, we overcome these limitations: we leverage recent advances in the multidimensional generalisation of the Random Subset-Sum Problem and obtain a variant that admits the stochastic dependencies that arise when addressing structured pruning in the SLTH. We apply this result to prove, for a wide class of random Convolutional Neural Networks, the existence of structured subnetworks that can approximate any sufficiently smaller network.
This result provides the first sub-exponential bound around the SLTH for structured pruning, opening up new avenues for further research on the hypothesis and contributing to the understanding of the role of over-parameterization in deep learning.
Majority dynamics on random graphs: the multiple states case
We study the evolution of majority dynamics with more than two states on the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$. In this process, each vertex has a state in $\{1,\ldots, k\}$, with $k\geq 3$, and at each round every vertex adopts state $i$ if it has more neighbours in state $i$ that in any other state. Ties are resolved randomly. We show that with high probability the process reaches unanimity in at most three rounds, if $np\gg n^{2/3}$.
A Local Limit Theorem for Integer Partitions into Small Powers
The investigation of partitions of integers plays an important role in combinatorics and number theory. Among the many variations, partitions into powers $0<α<1$ were of recent interest. In the present paper we want to extend our considerations of the length of a random partition by providing a local limit theorem.
Connectivity threshold for superpositions of Bernoulli random graphs. II
Let $G_1,\dots, G_m$ be independent Bernoulli random subgraphs of the complete graph ${\cal K}_n$ having variable sizes $X_1,\dots, X_m\in \{0,1,2,\dots\}$ and densities $Q_1,\dots, Q_m\in [0,1]$. Letting $n,m\to+\infty$ we establish the connectivity threshold for the union $\cup_{i=1}^mG_i$ defined on the vertex set of ${\cal K}_n$. Assuming that $(X_1,Q_1), (X_2,Q_2),\dots, (X_m,Q_m)$ are independent identically distributed bivariate random variables and $\ln n -\frac{m}{n}E\bigl(X_1(1-(1-Q_1)^{|X_1-1|}\bigr)\to c$ we show that $P\{\cup_{i=1}^mG_i$ is connected$\}\to e^{-e^c}$.The result extends to the case of non-identically distributed random variables $(X_1,Q_1),\dots, (X_m,Q_m)$ as well.
Topological and spectral properties of random digraphs
We investigate some topological and spectral properties of Erdős-Rényi (ER) random digraphs $D(n,p)$. In terms of topological properties, our primary focus lies in analyzing the number of non-isolated vertices $V_x(D)$ as well as two vertex-degree-based topological indices: the Randić index $R(D)$ and sum-connectivity index $χ(D)$. First, by performing a scaling analysis we show that the average degree $\langle k \rangle$ serves as scaling parameter for the average values of $V_x(D)$, $R(D)$ and $χ(D)$. Then, we also state expressions relating the number of arcs, spectral radius, and closed walks of length 2 to $(n,p)$, the parameters of ER random digraphs. Concerning spectral properties, we compute six different graph energies on $D(n,p)$. We start by validating $\langle k \rangle$ as the scaling parameter of the graph energies. Additionally, we reformulate a set of bounds previously reported in the literature for these energies as a function $(n,p)$. Finally, we phenomenologically state relations between energies that allow us to extend previously known bounds.
Linear Colouring of Binomial Random Graphs
We investigate the linear chromatic number $χ_{\text{lin}}(G(n,p))$ of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ on $n$ vertices in which each edge appears independently with probability $p=p(n)$. For dense random graphs ($np \to \infty$ as $n \to \infty$), we show that asymptotically almost surely $χ_{\text{lin}}(G(n,p)) \ge n (1 - O( (np)^{-1/2} ) ) = n(1-o(1))$. Understanding the order of the linear chromatic number for subcritical random graphs ($np < 1$) and critical ones ($np=1$) is relatively easy. However, supercritical sparse random graphs ($np = c$ for some constant $c > 1$) remain to be investigated.
The Distribution of Sandpile Groups of Random Graphs with their Pairings
We determine the distribution of the sandpile group (also known as the Jacobian) of the Erdős-Rényi random graph $G(n,q)$ along with its canonical duality pairing as $n$ tends to infinity, fully resolving a conjecture from 2015 due to Clancy, Leake, and Payne and generalizing the result by Wood on the groups. In particular, we show that a finite abelian $p$-group $G$ equipped with a perfect symmetric pairing $δ$ appears as the Sylow $p$-part of the sandpile group and its pairing with frequency inversely proportional to $|G||\mathrm{Aut}(G,δ)|$, where $\mathrm{Aut}(G,δ)$ is the set of automorphisms of $G$ preserving the pairing $δ$. While this distribution is related to the Cohen-Lenstra distribution, the two distributions are not the same on account of the additional algebraic data of the pairing. The proof utilizes the moment method: we first compute a complete set of moments for our random variable (the average number of epimorphisms from our random object to a fixed object in the category of interest) and then show the moments determine the distribution. To obtain the moments, we prove a universality result for the moments of cokernels of random symmetric integral matrices whose dual groups are equipped with symmetric pairings that is strong enough to handle both the dependence in the diagonal entries and the additional data of the pairing. We then apply results due to Sawin and Wood to show that these moments determine a unique distribution.
Spectral properties of random graphs with fixed equitable partition
We define a graph to be $S$-regular if it contains an equitable partition given by a matrix $S$. These graphs are generalizations of both regular and bipartite, biregular graphs. An $S$-regular matrix is defined then as a matrix on an $S$-regular graph consistent with the graph's equitable partition. In this paper we derive the limiting spectral density for large, random $S$-regular matrices as well as limiting functions of certain statistics for their eigenvector coordinates as a function of eigenvalue. These limiting functions are defined in terms of spectral measures on $S$-regular trees. In general, these spectral measures do not have a closed-form expression; however, we provide a defining system of polynomials for them. Finally, we explore eigenvalue bounds of $S$-regular graph, proving an expander mixing lemma, Alon-Bopana bound, and other eigenvalue inequalities in terms of the eigenvalues of the matrix $S$.
