There is no (75,32,10,16) strongly regular graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that there is no (75,32,10,16) strongly regular graph. The result is obtained by a mix of algebraic and computational approaches. The main idea is to build large enough induced structure and apply the star complement technique. Our result implies that there is no regular two-graph on 76 vertices and no partial geometry with parameters pg(4,7,2). In particular, it implies that there is no (76,35,18,14) strongly-regular graph. In order to solve this classification problem we also develop an efficient algorithm for the problem of finding a maximal clique in a graph.

On Extension of Regular Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we discuss when one can extend an r-regular graph to an r + 1 regular by adding edges. Different conditions on the num- ber of vertices n and regularity r are developed. We derive an upper bound of r, depending on n, for which, every regular graph G(n, r) can be extended to an r + 1-regular graph with n vertices. Presence of induced complete bipartite subgraph and complete subgraph is dis- cussed, separately, for the extension of regularity.
Equiangular tight frames with centroidal symmetry
Published • View PublicationBIB
An equiangular tight frame (ETF) is a set of unit vectors whose coherence achieves the Welch bound, and so is as incoherent as possible. Though they arise in many applications, only a few methods for constructing them are known. Motivated by the connection between real ETFs and graph theory, we introduce the notion of ETFs that are symmetric about their centroid. We then discuss how well-known constructions, such as harmonic ETFs and Steiner ETFs, can have centroidal symmetry. Finally, we establish a new equivalence between centroid-symmetric real ETFs and certain types of strongly regular graphs (SRGs). Together, these results give the first proof of the existence of certain SRGs, as well as the disproofs of the existence of others.

Regular Graphs with Forbidden Subgraphs of $K_n$ with $k$ Edges
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we raise a variant of a classic problem in extremal graph theory, which is motivated by a design of fractional repetition codes, a model in distributed storage systems. For any feasible positive integers $d\geq 3$, $n \geq 3$, and $k$, where $n-1 \leq k \leq \binom{n}{2}$, what is the minimum possible number of vertices in a $d$-regular undirected graph whose subgraphs with $n$ vertices contain at most $k$ edges? The goal of this paper is to give the exact number of vertices for each instance of the problem and also to provide some bounds for general values of $n$, $d$, and $k$. A few general bounds with some exact values, for this Turán-type problem, are given. We present an almost complete solution for $3 \leq n \leq 5$.

On edge-decomposition of cubic graphs into copies of the double-star with four edges
A tree containing exactly two non-pendant vertices is called a double-star. Let $k_1$ and $k_2$ be two positive integers. The double-star with degree sequence $(k_1+1, k_2+1, 1, \ldots, 1)$ is denoted by $S_{k_1, k_2}$. If $G$ is a cubic graph and has an $S$-decomposition, for a double-star $S$, then $S$ is isomorphic to $S_{1,1}$, $S_{1,2}$ or $S_{2,2}$. It is known that a cubic graph has an $S_{1,1}$-decomposition if and only if it contains a perfect matching. In this paper we study the $S_{1,2}$-decomposition of cubic graphs. First, we present some necessary conditions for the existence of an $S_{1,2}$-decomposition in cubic graphs. Then we prove that every $\{C_3, C_5, C_7\}$-free cubic graph of order $n$ with $α(G)= \frac{3n}{8}$ has an $S_{1,2}$-decomposition, where $α(G)$ denotes the independence number of $G$. Finally, we obtain some results on the $S_{1,r-1}$-decomposition of $r$-regular graphs.
On the distance spectra of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The distance matrix of a graph $G$ is the matrix containing the pairwise distances between vertices. The distance eigenvalues of $G$ are the eigenvalues of its distance matrix and they form the distance spectrum of $G$. We determine the distance spectra of halved cubes, double odd graphs, and Doob graphs, completing the determination of distance spectra of distance regular graphs having exactly one positive distance eigenvalue. We characterize strongly regular graphs having more positive than negative distance eigenvalues. We give examples of graphs with few distinct distance eigenvalues but lacking regularity properties. We also determine the determinant and inertia of the distance matrices of lollipop and barbell graphs.

The maximum number of perfect matchings of semi-regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n\ge 34$ be an even integer, and $D_n=2\lceil n/4 \rceil-1$. In this paper, we prove that every $\{D_n,\,D_n+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings. This result is sharp in the sense that (i) there exists a $\{D_n,\,D_n+1\}$-graph containing exactly $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings, and that (ii) there exists a $\{D_n-1,\,D_n\}$-graph without perfect matchings for each $n$. As a consequence, for any integer $D\ge D_n$, every $\{D,\,D+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil (D+1)/2 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings. This extends Csaba et~al.'s breathe-taking result that every $D$-regular graph of sufficiently large order is $1$-factorizable, generalizes Zhang and Zhu's result that every $D_n$-regular graph of order $n$ contains $\lceil n/4 \rceil$ disjoint perfect matchings, and improves Hou's result that for all $k\ge n/2$, every $\{k,\,k+1\}$-graph of order $n$ contains $(\lfloor n/3\rfloor+1+k-n/2)$ disjoint perfect matchings.
Embedding the Erdős-Rényi Hypergraph into the Random Regular Hypergraph and Hamiltonicity

We establish an inclusion relation between two uniform models of random $k$-graphs (for constant $k \ge 2$) on $n$ labeled vertices: $\mathbb G^{(k)}(n,m)$, the random $k$-graph with $m$ edges, and $\mathbb R^{(k)}(n,d)$, the random $d$-regular $k$-graph. We show that if $n\log n\ll m\ll n^k$ we can choose $d = d(n) \sim {km}/n$ and couple $\mathbb G^{(k)}(n,m)$ and $\mathbb R^{(k)}(n,d)$ so that the latter contains the former with probability tending to one as $n\to\infty$. This extends an earlier result of Kim and Vu about "sandwiching random graphs". In view of known threshold theorems on the existence of different types of Hamilton cycles in $\mathbb G^{(k)}(n,m)$, our result allows us to find conditions under which $\mathbb R^{(k)}(n,d)$ is Hamiltonian. In particular, for $k\ge 3$ we conclude that if $n^{k-2} \ll d \ll n^{k-1}$, then a.a.s. $\mathbb R^{(k)}(n,d)$ contains a tight Hamilton cycle.

Distant set distinguishing total colourings of graphs
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 23(2) (2016), #P2.54 • Search Publication
The Total Colouring Conjecture suggests that $Δ+3$ colours ought to suffice in order to provide a proper total colouring of every graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$. Thus far this has been confirmed up to an additive constant factor, and the same holds even if one additionally requires every pair of neighbours in $G$ to differ with respect to the sets of their incident colours, so called pallets. Within this paper we conjecture that an upper bound of the form $Δ+const.$ still remains valid even after extending the distinction requirement to pallets associated with vertices at distance at most $r$, if only $G$ has minimum degree $δ$ larger than a constant dependent on $r$. We prove that such assumption on $δ$ is then unavoidable and exploit the probabilistic method in order to provide two supporting results for the conjecture. Namely, we prove the upper bound $(1+o(1))Δ$ for every $r$, and show that the conjecture holds if $δ\geq \varepsilonΔ$ for any fixed $ε\in(0,1]$ and $r$, i.e., in particular for regular graphs.

Distant set distinguishing edge colourings of graphs
Published in European J. Comb. 69 (2018) 185-199 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the following extension of the concept of adjacent strong edge colourings of graphs without isolated edges. Two distinct vertices which are at distant at most $r$ in a graph are called $r$-adjacent. The least number of colours in a proper edge colouring of a graph $G$ such that the sets of colours met by any $r$-adjacent vertices in $G$ are distinct is called the $r$-adjacent strong chromatic index of $G$ and denoted by $χ'_{a,r}(G)$. It has been conjectured that $χ'_{a,1}(G)\leqΔ+2$ if $G$ is connected of maximum degree $Δ$ and non-isomorphic to $C_5$, while Hatami proved that there is a constant $C$, $C\leq 300$, such that $χ'_{a,1}(G)\leqΔ+C$ if $Δ>10^{20}$ [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 95 (2005) 246--256]. We conjecture that a similar statement should hold for any $r$, i.e., that for each positive integer $r$ there exist constants $δ_0$ and $C$ such that $χ'_{a,r}(G) \leq Δ+C$ for every graph without an isolated edge and with minimum degree $δ\geq δ_0$, and argue that a lower bound on $δ$ is unavoidable in such a case (for $r>2$). Using the probabilistic method we prove such upper bound to hold for graphs with $δ\geq εΔ$, for every $r$ and any fixed $\varepsilon\in(0,1]$, i.e., in particular for regular graphs. We also support the conjecture by proving an upper bound $χ'_{a,r}(G) \leq (1+o(1))Δ$ for graphs with $δ\geq r+2$.
Distance regularity in buildings and structure constants in Hecke algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we define generalised spheres in buildings using the simplicial structure and Weyl distance in the building, and we derive an explicit formula for the cardinality of these spheres. We prove a generalised notion of distance regularity in buildings, and develop a combinatorial formula for the cardinalities of intersections of generalised spheres. Motivated by the classical study of algebras associated to distance regular graphs we investigate the algebras and modules of Hecke operators arising from our generalised distance regularity, and prove isomorphisms between these algebras and more well known parabolic Hecke algebras. We conclude with applications of our main results to non-negativity of structure constants in parabolic Hecke algebras, commutativity of algebras of Hecke operators, double coset combinatorics in groups with $BN$-pairs, and random walks on the simplices of buildings.

Relationship between Conditional Diagnosability and 2-extra Connectivity of Symmetric Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The conditional diagnosability and the 2-extra connectivity are two important parameters to measure ability of diagnosing faulty processors and fault-tolerance in a multiprocessor system. The conditional diagnosability $t_c(G)$ of $G$ is the maximum number $t$ for which $G$ is conditionally $t$-diagnosable under the comparison model, while the 2-extra connectivity $κ_2(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number $k$ for which there is a vertex-cut $F$ with $|F|=k$ such that every component of $G-F$ has at least $3$ vertices. A quite natural problem is what is the relationship between the maximum and the minimum problem? This paper partially answer this problem by proving $t_c(G)=κ_2(G)$ for a regular graph $G$ with some acceptable conditions. As applications, the conditional diagnosability and the 2-extra connectivity are determined for some well-known classes of vertex-transitive graphs, including, star graphs, $(n,k)$-star graphs, alternating group networks, $(n,k)$-arrangement graphs, alternating group graphs, Cayley graphs obtained from transposition generating trees, bubble-sort graphs, $k$-ary $n$-cube networks and dual-cubes. Furthermore, many known results about these networks are obtained directly.
The clique number and the smallest Q-eigenvalue of graphs
Let $q_{\min}(G)$ stand for the smallest eigenvalue of the signless Laplacian of a graph $G$ of order $n.$ This paper gives some results on the following extremal problem: How large can $q_\min\left( G\right) $ be if $G$ is a graph of order $n,$ with no complete subgraph of order $r+1?$ It is shown that this problem is related to the well-known topic of making graphs bipartite. Using known classical results, several bounds on $q_{\min}$ are obtained, thus extending previous work of Brandt for regular graphs. In addition, using graph blowups, a general asymptotic result about the maximum $q_{\min}$ is established. As a supporting tool, the spectra of the Laplacian and the signless Laplacian of blowups of graphs are calculated.

New families of small regular graphs of girth 5
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we are interested in the {\it{Cage Problem}} that consists in constructing regular graphs of given girth $g$ and minimum order. We focus on girth $g=5$, where cages are known only for degrees $k \le 7$. We construct regular graphs of girth $5$ using techniques exposed by Funk [Note di Matematica. 29 suppl.1, (2009) 91 - 114] and Abreu et al. [Discrete Math. 312 (2012), 2832 - 2842] to obtain the best upper bounds known hitherto. The tables given in the introduction show the improvements obtained with our results.

Multi-Switch: a Tool for Finding Potential Edge-Disjoint $1$-factors
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $n$ be even, let $π= (d_1, \ldots, d_n)$ be a graphic degree sequence, and let $π- k = (d_1 - k, \ldots, d_n - k)$ also be graphic. Kundu proved that $π$ has a realization $G$ containing a $k$-factor, or $k$-regular graph. Another way to state the conclusion of Kundu's theorem is that $π$ \emph{potentially} contains a $k$-factor. Busch, Ferrara, Hartke, Jacobsen, Kaul, and West conjectured that more was true: $π$ potentially contains $k$ edge-disjoint $1$-factors. Along these lines, they proved $π$ would potentially contain edge-disjoint copies of a $(k-2)$-factor and two $1$-factors. We follow the methods of Busch et al.\ but introduce a new tool which we call a multi-switch. Using this new idea, we prove that $π$ potentially has edge-disjoint copies of a $(k-4)$-factor and four $1$-factors. We also prove that $π$ potentially has ($\lfloor k/2 \rfloor + 2$) edge-disjoint $1$-factors, but in this case cannot prove the existence of a large regular graph.

Interval edge-colorings of composition of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An edge-coloring of a graph $G$ with consecutive integers $c_{1},\ldots,c_{t}$ is called an \emph{interval $t$-coloring} if all colors are used, and the colors of edges incident to any vertex of $G$ are distinct and form an interval of integers. A graph $G$ is interval colorable if it has an interval $t$-coloring for some positive integer $t$. The set of all interval colorable graphs is denoted by $\mathfrak{N}$. In 2004, Giaro and Kubale showed that if $G,H\in \mathfrak{N}$, then the Cartesian product of these graphs belongs to $\mathfrak{N}$. In the same year they formulated a similar problem for the composition of graphs as an open problem. Later, in 2009, the first author showed that if $G,H\in \mathfrak{N}$ and $H$ is a regular graph, then $G[H]\in \mathfrak{N}$. In this paper, we prove that if $G\in \mathfrak{N}$ and $H$ has an interval coloring of a special type, then $G[H]\in \mathfrak{N}$. Moreover, we show that all regular graphs, complete bipartite graphs and trees have such a special interval coloring. In particular, this implies that if $G\in \mathfrak{N}$ and $T$ is a tree, then $G[T]\in \mathfrak{N}$.

Max-cut and extendability of matchings in distance-regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a distance-regular graph of order $v$ and size $e$. In this paper, we show that the max-cut in $G$ is at most $e(1-1/g)$, where $g$ is the odd girth of $G$. This result implies that the independence number of $G$ is at most $\frac{v}{2}(1-1/g)$. We use this fact to also study the extendability of matchings in distance-regular graphs. A graph $G$ of even order $v$ is called $t$-extendable if it contains a perfect matching, $t<v/2$ and any matching of $t$ edges is contained in some perfect matching. The extendability of $G$ is the maximum $t$ such that $G$ is $t$-extendable. We generalize previous results on strongly regular graphs and show that all distance-regular graphs with diameter $D\geq 3$ are $2$-extendable. We also obtain various lower bounds for the extendability of distance-regular graphs of valency $k$ that depend on $k$, $λ$ and $μ$, where $λ$ is the number of common neighbors of any two adjacent vertices and $μ$ is the number of common neighbors of any two vertices in distance two.

The Center and Radius of the Regular Graph of Ideals
The regular graph of ideals of the commutative ring $R$, denoted by ${Γ_{reg}}(R)$, is a graph whose vertex set is the set of all non-trivial ideals of $R$ and two distinct vertices $I$ and $J$ are adjacent if and only if either $I$ contains a $J$-regular element or $J$ contains an $I$-regular element. In this paper, it is proved that the radius of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ equals $3$. The central vertices of $Γ_{reg}(R)$ are determined, too.

Cutoff on all Ramanujan graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that on every Ramanujan graph $G$, the simple random walk exhibits cutoff: when $G$ has $n$ vertices and degree $d$, the total-variation distance of the walk from the uniform distribution at time $t=\frac{d}{d-2}\log_{d-1} n + s\sqrt{\log n}$ is asymptotically $\mathbb{P}(Z > c\, s)$ where $Z$ is a standard normal variable and $c=c(d)$ is an explicit constant. Furthermore, for all $1 \leq p \leq \infty$, $d$-regular Ramanujan graphs minimize the asymptotic $L^p$-mixing time for SRW among all $d$-regular graphs. Our proof also shows that, for every vertex $x$ in $G$ as above, its distance from $n-o(n)$ of the vertices is asymptotically $\log_{d-1} n$.
Upper tails and independence polynomials in random graphs
Published in Adv. Math. 319 (2017), 313-347 • View PublicationBIB
The upper tail problem in the Erdős--Rényi random graph $G\sim\mathcal{G}_{n,p}$ asks to estimate the probability that the number of copies of a graph $H$ in $G$ exceeds its expectation by a factor $1+δ$. Chatterjee and Dembo showed that in the sparse regime of $p\to 0$ as $n\to\infty$ with $p \geq n^{-α}$ for an explicit $α=α_H>0$, this problem reduces to a natural variational problem on weighted graphs, which was thereafter asymptotically solved by two of the authors in the case where $H$ is a clique. Here we extend the latter work to any fixed graph $H$ and determine a function $c_H(δ)$ such that, for $p$ as above and any fixed $δ>0$, the upper tail probability is $\exp[-(c_H(δ)+o(1))n^2 p^Δ\log(1/p)]$, where $Δ$ is the maximum degree of $H$. As it turns out, the leading order constant in the large deviation rate function, $c_H(δ)$, is governed by the independence polynomial of $H$, defined as $P_H(x)=\sum i_H(k) x^k $ where $i_H(k)$ is the number of independent sets of size $k$ in $H$. For instance, if $H$ is a regular graph on $m$ vertices, then $c_H(δ)$ is the minimum between $\frac12 δ^{2/m}$ and the unique positive solution of $P_H(x) = 1+δ$.
