Asymptotic enumeration of sparse multigraphs with given degrees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let J and J* be subsets of Z+ such that 0,1\in J and 0\in J*. For infinitely many n, let k=(k_1,..., k_n) be a vector of nonnegative integers whose sum M is even. We find an asymptotic expression for the number of multigraphs on the vertex set {1,..., n} with degree sequence given by k, such that every loop has multiplicity in J* and every non-loop edge has multiplicity in J. Equivalently, these are symmetric integer matrices with values J* allowed on the diagonal and J off the diagonal. Our expression holds when the maximum degree K satisfies K = o(M^(1/3)). We prove this result using the switching method, building on an asymptotic enumeration of simple graphs with given degrees (McKay and Wormald, 1991). Our application of the switching method introduces a novel way of combining several different switching operations into a single computation.
The Dyck pattern poset
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the notion of pattern in the context of lattice paths, and investigate it in the specific case of Dyck paths. Similarly to the case of permutations, the pattern-containment relation defines a poset structure on the set of all Dyck paths, which we call the Dyck pattern poset. Given a Dyck path P, we determine a formula for the number of Dyck paths covered by P, as well as for the number of Dyck paths covering P. We then address some typical pattern-avoidance issues, enumerating some classes of pattern-avoiding Dyck paths. Finally, we offer a conjecture concerning the asymptotic behavior of the sequence counting Dyck paths avoiding a generic pattern and we pose a series of open problems regarding the structure of the Dyck pattern poset.

The intersection spectrum of Skolem sequences and its applications to lambda fold cyclic triple systems, together with the Supplement
Published in Discrete Mathematics 312(2012) 1985-1999 • View PublicationBIB
A Skolem sequence of order n is a sequence S_n=(s_{1},s_{2},...,s_{2n}) of 2n integers containing each of the integers 1,2,...,n exactly twice, such that two occurrences of the integer j in {1,2,...,n} are separated by exactly j-1 integers. We prove that the necessary conditions are sufficient for existence of two Skolem sequences of order n with 0,1,2,...,n-3 and n pairs in same positions. Further, we apply this result to the fine structure of cyclic two, three and four-fold triple systems, and also to the fine structure of lambda-fold directed triple systems and lambda-fold Mendelsohn triple systems. For a better understanding of the paper we added more details into a "Supplement".

Asymptotic distribution of integers with certain prime factorizations
Published in J. Number Theory 136 (2014), 87-99 • View PublicationBIB
Let $p_{1}<p_2<... <p_ν<...$ be the sequence of prime numbers and let $m$ be a positive integer. We give a strong asymptotic formula for the distribution of the set of integers having prime factorizations of the form $p_{m^{k_1}}p_{m^{k_{2}}...p_{m^{k_{n}}}$ with $k_{1}\le k_{2}\le...\le k_{n}$. Such integers originate in various combinatorial counting problems; when $m=2$, they arise as Matula numbers of certain rooted trees.

We give an improvement of a result of Zverovich and Zverovich which gives a condition on the first and last elements in a decreasing sequence of positive integers for the sequence to be graphic, that is, the degree sequence of a finite graph.

Symmetric Bipartite Graphs and Graphs with Loops
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if the two parts of a finite bipartite graph have the same degree sequence, then there is a bipartite graph, with the same degree sequences, which is symmetric, in that it has an involutive graph automorphism that interchanges its two parts. To prove this, we study the relationship between symmetric bipartite graphs and graphs with loops.

Minimal zero-sum sequences of length five over finite cyclic groups
Let $G$ be a finite cyclic group. Every sequence $S$ of length $l$ over $G$ can be written in the form $S=(n_1g)\cdot\ldots\cdot(n_lg)$ where $g\in G$ and $n_1, \ldots, n_l\in[1, \ord(g)]$, and the index $\ind(S)$ of $S$ is defined to be the minimum of $(n_1+\cdots+n_l)/\ord(g)$ over all possible $g\in G$ such that $\langle g \rangle =G$. In this paper, we determine the index of any minimal zero-sum sequence $S$ of length 5 when $G=\langle g\rangle$ is a cyclic group of a prime order and $S$ has the form $S=g^2(n_2g)(n_3g)(n_4g)$. It is shown that if $G=\langle g\rangle$ is a cyclic group of prime order $p \geq 31$, then every minimal zero-sum sequence $S$ of the above mentioned form has index 1 except in the case that $S=g^2(\frac{p-1}{2}g)(\frac{p+3}{2}g)((p-3)g)$.

Minimal zero-sum sequences of length four over finite cyclic groups II
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite cyclic group. Every sequence $S$ over $G$ can be written in the form $S=(n_1g)\cdot\ldots\cdot(n_lg)$ where $g\in G$ and $n_1, \ldots, n_l\in[1, \ord(g)]$, and the index $\ind(S)$ of $S$ is defined to be the minimum of $(n_1+\cdots+n_l)/\ord(g)$ over all possible $g\in G$ such that $\langle g \rangle =G$. An open problem on the index of length four sequences asks whether or not every minimal zero-sum sequence of length 4 over a finite cyclic group $G$ with $\gcd(|G|, 6)=1$ has index 1. In this paper, we show that if $G=\langle g\rangle$ is a cyclic group with order of a product of two prime powers and $\gcd(|G|, 6)=1$, then every minimal zero-sum sequence $S$ of the form $S=(g)(n_2g)(n_3g)(n_4g)$ has index 1. In particular, our result confirms that the above problem has an affirmative answer when the order of $G$ is a product of two different prime numbers or a prime power, extending a recent result by the first author, Plyley, Yuan and Zeng.
On partitions of G-spaces and G-lattices
Published in IJAC 26:2 (2016) 283-308 • View PublicationBIB
Given a $G$-space $X$ and a non-trivial $G$-invariant ideal $I$ of subsets of $X$, we prove that for every partition $X=A_1\cup\dots\cup A_n$ of $X$ into $n\ge 2$ pieces there is a piece $A_i$ of the partition and a finite set $F\subset G$ of cardinality $|F|\le φ(n+1):=\max_{1<x<n+1}\frac{x^{n+1-x}-1}{x-1}$ such that $G=F\cdot Δ(A_i)$ where $Δ(A_i)=\{g\in G:gA_i\cap A_i\notin I\}$ is the difference set of the set $A_i$. Also we investigate the growth of the sequence $φ(n)=\max_{1<x<n}\frac{x^{n-x}-1}{x-1}$ and show that $\ln φ(n)=nW(ne)-2n+\frac{n}{W(ne)}+\frac{W(ne)}{n}+O\big(\frac{\ln n}n\big)$ where $W(x)$ is the Lambert W-function, defined implicitly as $W(x)e^{W(x)}=x$. This shows that $φ(n)$ grows faster that any exponent $a^n$ but slower than the sequence of factorials $n!$.

Lambda Words: A Class of Rich Words Defined Over an Infinite Alphabet
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences (2013), Article 13.3.4 • Search Publication
Lambda words are sequences obtained by encoding the differences between ordered elements of the form i+jθ, where i and j are non-negative integers and 1 < θ<2. Lambda words are right-infinite words defined over an infinite alphabet that have connections with Sturmian words, Christoffel words, and interspersion arrays. We show that Lambda words are infinite rich words. Furthermore, any Lambda word may be mapped onto a right-infinite word over a three-letter alphabet. Although the mapping preserves palindromes and non-palindromes of the Lambda word, the resulting Gamma word is not rich.

Generating permutations with a given major index
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [S. Effler, F. Ruskey, A CAT algorithm for listing permutations with a given number of inversions, {\it I.P.L.}, 86/2 (2003)] the authors give an algorithm, which appears to be CAT, for generating permutations with a given major index. In the present paper we give a new algorithm for generating a Gray code for subexcedant sequences. We show that this algorithm is CAT and derive it into a CAT generating algorithm for permutations with a given major index.

A Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the continuum limit of non-dominated sorting
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that non-dominated sorting of a sequence of i.i.d. random variables in Euclidean space has a continuum limit that corresponds to solving a Hamilton-Jacobi equation involving the probability density function of the random variables. Non-dominated sorting is a fundamental problem in multi-objective optimization, and is equivalent to finding the canonical antichain partition and to problems involving the longest chain among Euclidean points. As an application of this result, we show that non-dominated sorting is asymptotically stable under random perturbations in the data. We give a numerical scheme for computing the viscosity solution of this Hamilton-Jacobi equation and present some numerical simulations for various density functions.

Stellar theory for flag complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Refining a basic result of Alexander, we show that two flag simplicial complexes are piecewise linearly homeomorphic if and only if they can be connected by a sequence of flag complexes, each obtained from the previous one by either an edge subdivision or its inverse. For flag spheres we pose new conjectures on their combinatorial structure forced by their face numbers, analogous to the extremal examples in the upper and lower bound theorems for simplicial spheres. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm to test the conjectures searches through the entire space of flag PL spheres of any given dimension.

A family of Alltop functions that are EA-inequivalent to the cubic function
Published in IEEE Transactions on Communications, 61(11) 4722 - 4727 , 2013 • View PublicationBIB
Sequences with optimal correlation properties are much sought after for applications in communication systems. In 1980, Alltop (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 26(3):350-354, 1980) described a set of sequences based on a cubic function and showed that these functions were optimal with respect to known bounds on auto and crosscorrelation. Subsequently these sequences were used to construct mutually unbiased bases, a structure of importance in quantum information theory. The key feature of this cubic function is that its difference function is a planar function. Functions with planar difference functions have been called \emph{Alltop functions}. This paper provides a new family of Alltop functions and establishes the use of Alltop functions for construction of sequence sets and MUBs.
Convergent sequences of sparse graphs: A large deviations approach
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we introduce a new notion of convergence of sparse graphs which we call Large Deviations or LD-convergence and which is based on the theory of large deviations. The notion is introduced by "decorating" the nodes of the graph with random uniform i.i.d. weights and constructing random measures on $[0,1]$ and $[0,1]^2$ based on the decoration of nodes and edges. A graph sequence is defined to be converging if the corresponding sequence of random measures satisfies the Large Deviations Principle with respect to the topology of weak convergence on bounded measures on $[0,1]^d, d=1,2$. We then establish that LD-convergence implies several previous notions of convergence, namely so-called right-convergence, left-convergence, and partition-convergence. The corresponding large deviation rate function can be interpreted as the limit object of the sparse graph sequence. In particular, we can express the limiting free energies in terms of this limit object.
Dually weighted Stirling-type sequences
Published in European J. Combin. 43 (2015) 55-67 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a generalization of the Stirling numbers via symmetric functions involving two weight functions. The resulting extension unifies previously known Stirling-type sequences with known symmetric function forms, as well as other sequences such as the $p,q$-binomial coefficients. Recurrence relations, generating functions, orthogonality relations, convolution formulas, and determinants of certain matrices involving the obtained sequences are derived. We also give combinatorial interpretations of certain cases in terms of colored partitions and permutations.

Additive and multiplicative structure of c$^{\star}$-sets
It is known that for an IP${^\star}$ set $A$ in $\mathbb{N}$ and a sequence $< x_{n}>_{n=1}^{\infty}$ there exists a sum subsystem $< y_{n}>_{n=1}^{\infty}$ of $< x_{n}>_{n=1}^{\infty}$ such that $FS(< y_n>_{n=1}^\infty)\cup FP(< y_n>_{n=1}^\infty)\subseteq A$. Similar types of results also have been proved for central* sets where the sequences have been taken from the class of minimal sequences. In this present work we will prove some analogues results for C$^{\star}$-sets for a more general class of sequences.
