Spectral sequences of colored Jones polynomials, colored Rasmussen invariants and nanophrases
We introduce three spectral sequences which give some expressions of colored Jones polynomials. Each spectral sequence contains a Khovanov-type homology groups. Two of them are derived from a bicomplex of the colored Jones polynomial. The other is the spectral sequence that deduces a colored Rasmussen invariant of links. We also introduce three functors between categories of nanophrases, generalizations of links, and obtain their applications using colored Jones polynomials and their categorifications.
Young classes of permutations
We characterise those classes of permutations having the property that for every tableau shape either every permutation of that shape or no permutation of that shape belongs to the class. The characterisation is in terms of the dominance order for partitions (and their conjugates) and shows that for any such class there is a constant k such that no permutation in the class can contain both an increasing and a decreasing sequence of length k.
An Asymptotic Faber-Krahn Inequality for the Combinatorial Laplacian on Z^2
The Faber-Krahn inequality states that among all open domains with a fixed volume in R^n, the ball minimizes the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian. We study an asymptotic discrete analogue of this for the combinatorial Dirichlet Laplacian acting on induced subgraphs of Z^2. Namely, an induced subgraph G with n vertices is called a minimizing subgraph if it minimizes the first eigenvalue of the combinatorial Dirichlet Laplacian among all induced subgraphs with n vertices. Consider an induced subgraph G and take the interior of the union of closed squares of area 1 about each point of G. Let G* denote this domain scaled down to have area 1. Our main theorem states that if {G_n} is a sequence of minimizing subgraphs where each G_n has n vertices, then after translation the measure of the symmetric difference of G_n* and the unit disk converges to 0.

Given a real number beta>1, a permutation pi of length n is realized by the beta-shift if there is some x in [0,1] such that the relative order of the sequence x,f(x),...,f^{n-1}(x), where f(x) is the factional part of beta*x, is the same as that of the entries of pi. Widely studied from such diverse fields as number theory and automata theory, beta-shifts are prototypical examples one-dimensional chaotic dynamical systems. When beta is an integer, permutations realized by shifts where studied in [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23 (2009), 765-786]. In this paper we generalize some of the results to arbitrary beta-shifts. We describe a method to compute, for any given permutation pi, the smallest beta such that pi is realized by the beta-shift. We also give a way to determine the length of the shortest forbidden (i.e., not realized) pattern of an arbitrary beta-shift.

In this paper, we use the tools of Gröbner bases and combinatorial secant varieties to study the determinantal ideals $I_t$ of the extended Hankel matrices. Denote by $c$-chain a sequence $a_1,\...,a_k$ with $a_i+c<a_{i+1}$ for all $i=1,\...,k-1$. Using the results of $c$-chain, we solve the membership problem for the symbolic powers $I_t^{(s)}$ and we compute the primary decomposition of the product $I_{t_1}\... I_{t_k}$ of the determinantal ideals. Passing through the initial ideals and algebras we prove that the product $I_{t_1}\... I_{t_k}$ has a linear resolution and the multi-homogeneous Rees algebra $\Rees(I_{t_1},\...,I_{t_k})$ is defined by a Gröbner basis of quadrics.
On m-covering families of Beatty sequences with irrational moduli

We generalise Uspensky's theorem characterising eventual exact (e.e.) covers of the positive integers by homogeneous Beatty sequences, to e.e. m-covers, for any m \in \N, by homogeneous sequences with irrational moduli. We also consider inhomogeneous sequences, again with irrational moduli, and obtain a purely arithmetical characterisation of e.e. m-covers. This generalises a result of Graham for m = 1, but when m > 1 the arithmetical description is more complicated. Finally we speculate on how one might make sense of the notion of an exact m-cover when m is not an integer, and present a "fractional version" of Beatty's theorem.

We update the list of odd integers n<10000 for which an Hadamard matrix of order 4n is known to exist. We also exhibit the first example of base sequences BS(40,39). Consequently, there exist T-sequences TS(n) of length n=79. The first undecided case has the length n=97.

A new ordering, extending the notion of universal cycles of Chung {\em et al.} (1992), is proposed for the blocks of $k$-uniform set systems. Existence of minimum coverings of pairs by triples that possess such an ordering is established for all orders. Application to the construction of short 2-radius sequences is given, with some new 2-radius sequences found through computer search.

Optimal partitioned cyclic difference packings (PCDPs) are shown to give rise to optimal frequency-hopping sequences and optimal comma-free codes. New constructions for PCDPs, based on almost difference sets and cyclic difference matrices, are given. These produce new infinite families of optimal PCDPs (and hence optimal frequency-hopping sequences and optimal comma-free codes). The existence problem for optimal PCDPs in ${\mathbb Z}_{3m}$, with $m$ base blocks of size three, is also solved for all $m\not\equiv 8,16\pmod{24}$.
A compositional shuffle conjecture specifying touch points of the Dyck path

We introduce a $q,t$-enumeration of Dyck paths which are forced to touch the main diagonal at specific points and forbidden to touch elsewhere and conjecture that it describes the action of the Macdonald theory $\nabla$ operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial. Our conjecture refines several earlier conjectures concerning the space of diagonal harmonics including the "shuffle conjecture" (Duke J. Math. $\mathbf {126}$ (2005), pp. 195-232) for $\nabla e_n[X]$. We bring to light that certain generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by compositions are the building blocks for the algebraic combinatorial theory of $q,t$-Catalan sequences and we prove a number of identities involving these functions.

Base sequences BS(m,n) are quadruples (A;B;C;D) of {+1,-1}-sequences, with A and B of length m and C and D of length n, such that the sum of their nonperiodic autocorrelation functions is a delta-function. Normal sequences NS(n) are base sequences (A;B;C;D) in BS(n,n) such that A=B. We introduce a definition of equivalence for normal sequences NS(n), and construct a canonical form. By using this canonical form, we have enumerated the equivalence classes of NS(n) for n <= 40.
Interlacing Log-concavity of the Boros-Moll Polynomials

We introduce the notion of interlacing log-concavity of a polynomial sequence $\{P_m(x)\}_{m\geq 0}$, where $P_m(x)$ is a polynomial of degree m with positive coefficients $a_{i}(m)$. This sequence of polynomials is said to be interlacing log-concave if the ratios of consecutive coefficients of $P_m(x)$ interlace the ratios of consecutive coefficients of $P_{m+1}(x)$ for any $m\geq 0$. Interlacing log-concavity is stronger than the log-concavity. We show that the Boros-Moll polynomials are interlacing log-concave. Furthermore we give a sufficient condition for interlacing log-concavity which implies that some classical combinatorial polynomials are interlacing log-concave.
Reconstructing pedigrees: some identifiability questions for a recombination-mutation model

Pedigrees are directed acyclic graphs that represent ancestral relationships between individuals in a population. Based on a schematic recombination process, we describe two simple Markov models for sequences evolving on pedigrees - Model R (recombinations without mutations) and Model RM (recombinations with mutations). For these models, we ask an identifiability question: is it possible to construct a pedigree from the joint probability distribution of extant sequences? We present partial identifiability results for general pedigrees: we show that when the crossover probabilities are sufficiently small, certain spanning subgraph sequences can be counted from the joint distribution of extant sequences. We demonstrate how pedigrees that earlier seemed difficult to distinguish are distinguished by counting their spanning subgraph sequences.
A sharp upper bound for the independence number
An $r$-graph $G$ is a pair $(V,E)$ such that $V$ is a set and $E$ is a family of $r$-element subsets of $V$. The \emph{independence number} $α(G)$ of $G$ is the size of a largest subset $I$ of $V$ such that no member of $E$ is a subset of $I$. The \emph{transversal number} $τ(G)$ of $G$ is the size of a smallest subset $T$ of $V$ that intersects each member of $E$. $G$ is said to be \emph{connected} if for every distinct $v$ and $w$ in $V$ there exists a \emph{path} from $v$ to $w$ (that is, a sequence $e_1, \dots, e_p$ of members of $E$ such that $v \in e_1$, $w \in e_p$, and if $p \geq 2$, then for each $i \in \{1, \dots, p-1\}$, $e_i$ intersects $e_{i+1}$). The \emph{degree} of a member $v$ of $V$ is the number of members of $E$ that contain $v$. The maximum of the degrees of the members of $V$ is denoted by $Δ(G)$. We show that for any $1 \leq k < n$, if $G = (V,E)$ is a connected $r$-graph, $|V| = n$, and $Δ(G) = k$, then \[α(G) \leq n - \left \lceil \frac{n-1}{k(r-1)} \right \rceil, \quad τ(G) \geq \left \lceil \frac{n-1}{k(r-1)} \right \rceil,\] and these bounds are sharp. The two bounds are equivalent.
A new Yang number and consequences

Base sequences BS(m,n) are quadruples (A;B;C;D) of {+1,-1}-sequences, A and B of length m and C and D of length n, the sum of whose non-periodic auto-correlation functions is zero. Base sequences and some special subclasses of BS(n+1,n) known as normal and near-normal sequences, NS(n) and NN(n), as well as T-sequences and orthogonal designs play a prominent role in modern constructions of Hadamard matrices. In our previous papers (see the references) we have classified the near-normal sequences NN(s) for all even integers s <= 32 (they do not exist for odd s>1). We now extend the classification to the case s=34. Moreover we construct the first example of near-normal sequences NN(36). Consequently, we construct for the first time T-sequences of length 73. For all smaller lengths, T-sequences were already known. Another consequence is that 73 is a Yang number, and a few important consequences of this fact are given.
Enumerating Combinatorial Classes of the Complex Polynomial Vector Fields in the Complex Plane

In order to understand the parameter space of monic and centered complex polynomial vector fields of degree d in the complex plane, decomposed by the combinatorial classes of the vector fields, it is interesting to know the number of loci in parameter space consisting of vector fields with the same combinatorial data (corresponding to topological classification with fixed separatrices at infinity).
This paper answers questions posed by Adam L. Epstein and Tan Lei about the total number of combinatorial classes and the number of combinatorial classes corresponding to loci of a specific (real) dimension q in parameter space, for fixed degree d. These results are extensions of a result by Douady, Estrada, and Sentenac, which shows that the number of combinatorial classes of the structurally stable complex polynomial vector fields of degree d in the complex plane is the Catalan number C(d-1). We show that enumerating the combinatorial classes is equivalent to a so-called bracketing problem. Then we analyze the generating functions and find closed-form expressions for the number of classes, as functions of d and q, and we furthermore make an asymptotic analysis of these sequences for d tending to infinity.
These results are also applicable to special classes of Abelian differentials, quadratic differentials with double poles, and singular holomorphic foliations of the plane.
Ratio Monotonicity of Polynomials Derived from Nondecreasing Sequences

The ratio monotonicity of a polynomial is a stronger property than log-concavity. Let P(x) be a polynomial with nonnegative and nondecreasing coefficients. We prove the ratio monotone property of P(x+1), which leads to the log-concavity of P(x+c) for any $c\geq 1$ due to Llamas and Martínez-Bernal. As a consequence, we obtain the ratio monotonicity of the Boros-Moll polynomials obtained by Chen and Xia without resorting to the recurrence relations of the coefficients.
The Multiple Permutation Problem and Some Conjectures
In this paper, we proposed an interesting problem that might be classified into enumerative combinatorics. Featuring a distinctive two-fold dependence upon the sequences' terms, our problem can be really difficult, which calls for novel approaches to work it out for any given pair $(m,n)$. Complete or partial solutions for $m=2, 3$ with smaller $n$'s are listed. Moreover, we have proved the necessary condition for $p(m,n) \neq 0$ and suggested an elegant asymptotic formula for $p(2,n)$. In addition, several challenging conjectures are provided, together with concise comments.
Rank-width and Well-quasi-ordering of Skew-Symmetric or Symmetric Matrices

We prove that every infinite sequence of skew-symmetric or symmetric matrices M_1, M_2, ... over a fixed finite field must have a pair M_i, M_j (i<j) such that M_i is isomorphic to a principal submatrix of the Schur complement of a nonsingular principal submatrix in M_j, if those matrices have bounded rank-width. This generalizes three theorems on well-quasi-ordering of graphs or matroids admitting good tree-like decompositions; (1) Robertson and Seymour's theorem for graphs of bounded tree-width, (2) Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle's theorem for matroids representable over a fixed finite field having bounded branch-width, and (3) Oum's theorem for graphs of bounded rank-width with respect to pivot-minors.
What Could Be a Simple Permutation?
Different ways to describe a permutation, as a sequence of integers, or a product of Coxeter generators, or a tree, give different choices to define a simple permutation. We recollect few of them, define new types of simple permutations, and analyze their interconnections and some asymptotic and geometrical properties of these classes.
