The Smith and critical groups of Paley graphs
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics: Volume 41, Issue 4 (2015), Page 1013-1022 pdf • View PublicationBIB
There is a Paley graph for each prime power $q$ such that $q\equiv 1\pmod 4$. The vertex set is the field $\mathbb Fq$ and two vertices $x$ and $y$ are joined by an edge if and only if $x-y$ is a nonzero square of $\mathbb Fq$. We compute the Smith normal forms of the adjacency matrix and Laplacian matrix of a Paley graph.

Smith Normal Form of a Multivariate Matrix Associated with Partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consideration of a question of E. R. Berlekamp led Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville to give a combinatorial interpretation of the entries of certain matrices of determinant~1 in terms of lattice paths. Here we generalize this result by refining the matrix entries to be multivariate polynomials, and by determining not only the determinant but also the Smith normal form of these matrices. A priori the Smith form need not exist but its existence follows from the explicit computation. It will be more convenient for us to state our results in terms of partitions rather than lattice paths.

Integer invariants of abelian Cayley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a finite abelian group, let $E$ be a subset of $G$, and form the Cayley (directed) graph of $G$ with connecting set $E$. We explain how, for various matrices associated to this graph, the spectrum can be used to give information on the Smith normal form. This technique is applied to several interesting examples, including matrices in the Bose-Mesner algebra of the Hamming association scheme $H(n,q)$. We also recover results of Bai and Jacobson-Niedermaier-Reiner on the critical group of a Cartesian product of complete graphs.
Generalized frieze pattern determinants and higher angulations of polygons
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, vol. 123 (2014), pp. 30-42 • View PublicationBIB
Frieze patterns (in the sense of Conway and Coxeter) are in close connection to triangulations of polygons. Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have assigned a symmetric matrix to each polygon triangulation and computed the determinant. In this paper we consider d-angulations of polygons and generalize the combinatorial algorithm for computing the entries in the associated symmetric matrices; we compute their determinants and the Smith normal forms. It turns out that both are independent of the particular d-angulation, the determinant is a power of d-1, and the elementary divisors only take values d-1 and 1. We also show that in the generalized frieze patterns obtained in our setting every adjacent 2x2-determinant is 0 or 1, and we give a combinatorial criterion for when they are 1, which in the case d=3 gives back the Conway-Coxeter condition on frieze patterns.

On congruence in Z^n and the dimension of a multidimensional circulant
Published in Discrete Math. 141 (1995) 123--134 • View PublicationBIB
From a generalization to $Z^n$ of the concept of congruence we define a family of regular digraphs or graphs called multidimensional circulants, which turn out to be Cayley (di)graphs of Abelian groups. This paper is mainly devoted to show the relationship between the Smith normal form for integral matrices and the dimensions of such (di)graphs, that is the minimum ranks of the groups they can arise from. In particular, those 2-step multidimensional circulants which are circulants, that is Cayley (di)graphs of cyclic groups, are fully characterized. In addition, a reasoning due to Lawrence is used to prove that the cartesian product of $n$ circulants with equal number of vertices $p>2$, $p$ a prime, has dimension $n$.
Simplified numerical form of universal finite type invariant of Gauss words
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper, we study the finite type invariants of Gauss words. In the Polyak algebra techniques, we reduce the determination of the group structure to transformation of a matrix into its Smith normal form and we give the simplified form of a universal finite type invariant by means of the isomorphism of this transformation. The advantage of this process is that we can implement it as a computer program. We obtain the universal finite type invariant of degree 4, 5, and 6 explicitly. Moreover, as an application, we give the complete classification of Gauss words of rank 4 and the partial classification of Gauss words of rank 5 where the distinction of only one pair remains.

Trivariate monomial complete intersections and plane partitions

We consider the homogeneous components U_r of the map on R = k[x,y,z]/(x^A, y^B, z^C) that multiplies by x + y + z. We prove a relationship between the Smith normal forms of submatrices of an arbitrary Toeplitz matrix using Schur polynomials, and use this to give a relationship between Smith normal form entries of U_r. We also give a bijective proof of an identity proven by J. Li and F. Zanello equating the determinant of the middle homogeneous component U_r when (A, B, C) = (a + b, a + c, b + c) to the number of plane partitions in an a by b by c box. Finally, we prove that, for certain vector subspaces of R, similar identities hold relating determinants to symmetry classes of plane partitions, in particular classes 3, 6, and 8.

Differential posets and Smith normal forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We conjecture a strong property for the up and down maps U and D in an r-differential poset: DU+tI and UD+tI have Smith normal forms over Z[t]. In particular, this would determine the integral structure of the maps U, D, UD, DU, including their ranks in any characteristic. As evidence, we prove the conjecture for the Young-Fibonacci lattice YF studied by Okada and its r-differential generalizations Z(r), as well as verifying many of its consequences for Young's lattice Y and the r-differential Cartesian products Y^r.

Latin trades in groups defined on planar triangulations
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 30 (2009), 323-347 • View PublicationBIB
For a finite triangulation of the plane with faces properly coloured white and black, let A be the abelian group constructed by labelling the vertices with commuting indeterminates and adding relations which say that the labels around each white triangle add to the identity. We show that A has free rank exactly two. Let A* be the torsion subgroup of A, and B* the corresponding group for the black triangles. We show that A* and B* have the same order, and conjecture that they are isomorphic. For each spherical latin trade W, we show there is a unique disjoint mate B such that (W,B) is a connected and separated bitrade. The bitrade (W,B) is associated with a two-colourable planar triangulation and we show that W can be embedded in A*, thereby proving a conjecture due to Cavenagh and Drapal. The proof involves constructing a (0,1) presentation matrix whose permanent and determinant agree up to sign. The Smith Normal Form of this matrix determines A*, so there is an efficient algorithm to construct the embedding. Contrasting with the spherical case, for each genus g>0 we construct a latin trade which is not embeddable in any group and another that is embeddable in a cyclic group. We construct a sequence of spherical latin trades which cannot be embedded in any family of abelian groups whose torsion ranks are bounded. Also, we show that any trade that can be embedded in a finitely generated abelian group can be embedded in a finite abelian group. As a corollary, no trade can be embedded in a free abelian group.
Inclusion Matrices and Chains

Given integers $t$, $k$, and $v$ such that $0\leq t\leq k\leq v$, let $W_{tk}(v)$ be the inclusion matrix of $t$-subsets vs. $k$-subsets of a $v$-set. We modify slightly the concept of standard tableau to study the notion of rank of a finite set of positive integers which was introduced by Frankl. Utilizing this, a decomposition of the poset $2^{[v]}$ into symmetric skipless chains is given. Based on this decomposition, we construct an inclusion matrix, denoted by $W_{\bar{t}k}(v)$, which is row-equivalent to $W_{tk}(v)$. Its Smith normal form is determined. As applications, Wilson's diagonal form of $W_{tk}(v)$ is obtained as well as a new proof of the well known theorem on the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of integral solutions of the system $W_{tk}\bf{x}=\bf{b}$ due to Wilson. Finally we present anotherinclusion matrix with similar properties to those of $W_{\bar{t}k}(v)$ which is in some way equivalent to $W_{tk}(v)$.

Classification of small $(0,1)$ matrices
Denote by $A_n$ the set of square $(0,1)$ matrices of order $n$. The set $A_n$, $n\le8$, is partitioned into row/column permutation equivalence classes enabling derivation of various facts by simple counting. For example, the number of regular $(0,1)$ matrices of order 8 is 10160459763342013440. Let $D_n$, $S_n$ denote the set of absolute determinant values and Smith normal forms of matrices from $A_n$. Denote by $a_n$ the smallest integer not in $D_n$. The sets $\mathcal{D}_9$ and $\mathcal{S}_9$ are obtained; especially, $a_9=103$. The lower bounds for $a_n$, $10\le n\le 19$, (exceeding the known lower bound $a_n\ge 2f_{n-1}$, where $f_n$ is $n$th Fibonacci number) are obtained. Row/permutation equivalence classes of $A_n$ correspond to bipartite graphs with $n$ black and $n$ white vertices, and so the other applications of the classification are possible.

Smith Normal Form and Acyclic Matrics
Published • View PublicationBIB
An approach, based on the Smith Normal Form, is introduced to study the spectra of symmetric matrices with a given graph. The approach serves well to explain how the path cover number (resp. diameter of a tree T) is related to the maximum multiplicity occurring for an eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix whose graph is T (resp. the minimum number q(T) of distinct eigenvalues over the symmetric matrices whose graphs are T). The approach is also applied to a more general class of connected graphs G, not necessarily trees, in order to establish a lower bound on q(G).

We survey recent results on $p$-ranks and Smith normal forms of some $2-(v,k,λ)$ designs. In particular, we give a description of the recent work in \cite{csx} on the Smith normal forms of the 2-designs arising from projective and affine spaces over $\Ff_q$.
Properties of some character tables related to the symmetric groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We determine invariants like the Smith normal form and the determinant for certain integral matrices which arise from the character tables of the symmetric groups S_n and their double covers. In particular, we give a simple computation, based on the theory of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions, of the determinant of the regular character table of S_n with respect to an integer r>1. This result had earlier been proved by Olsson in a longer and more indirect manner. As a consequence, we obtain a new proof of the Mathas' Conjecture on the determinant of the Cartan matrix of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra. When r is prime we determine the Smith normal form of the regular character table. Taking r large yields the Smith normal form of the full character table of S_n. Analogous results are then given for spin characters.

Kasteleyn cokernels
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 9 (2002), #R29 • View PublicationBIB
We consider Kasteleyn and Kasteleyn-Percus matrices, which arise in enumerating matchings of planar graphs, up to matrix operations on their rows and columns. If such a matrix is defined over a principal ideal domain, this is equivalent to considering its Smith normal form or its cokernel. Many variations of the enumeration methods result in equivalent matrices. In particular, Gessel-Viennot matrices are equivalent to Kasteleyn-Percus matrices. We apply these ideas to plane partitions and related planar of tilings. We list a number of conjectures, supported by experiments in Maple, about the forms of matrices associated to enumerations of plane partitions and other lozenge tilings of planar regions and their symmetry classes. We focus on the case where the enumerations are round or $q$-round, and we conjecture that cokernels remain round or $q$-round for related ``impossible enumerations'' in which there are no tilings. Our conjectures provide a new view of the topic of enumerating symmetry classes of plane partitions and their generalizations. In particular we conjecture that a $q$-specialization of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix has a Smith normal form. If so it could be an interesting structure associated to the corresponding irreducible representation of $\SL(n,\C)$. Finally we find, with proof, the normal form of the matrix that appears in the enumeration of domino tilings of an Aztec diamond.
