On the Polynomial Szemerédi Theorem in Finite Commutative Rings
The polynomial Szemerédi theorem implies that, for any $δ\in (0,1)$, any family $\{P_1,\ldots, P_m\} \subset \mathbb{Z}[y]$ of nonconstant polynomials with constant term zero, and any sufficiently large $N$, every subset of $\{1,\ldots, N\}$ of cardinality at least $δN$ contains a nontrivial configuration of the form $\{x,x+P_1(y),\ldots, x+P_m(y)\}$. When the polynomials are assumed independent, one can expect a sharper result to hold over finite fields, special cases of which were proven recently, culminating with arXiv:1802.02200, which deals with the general case of independent polynomials. One goal of this article is to explain these theorems as the result of joint ergodicity in the presence of asymptotic total ergodicity. Guided by this concept, we establish, over general finite commutative rings, a version of the polynomial Szemerédi theorem for independent polynomials $\{P_1,\ldots, P_m\} \subset \mathbb{Z}[y_1,\ldots, y_n]$, deriving new combinatorial consequences, such as the following. Let $\mathcal R$ be a collection of finite commutative rings subject to a mild condition on their torsion. There exists $γ\in (0,1)$ such that, for every $R \in \mathcal R$, every subset $A \subset R$ of cardinality at least $|R|^{1-γ}$ contains a nontrivial configuration $\{x,x+P_1(y),\ldots, x+P_m(y)\}$ for some $(x,y) \in R \times R^n$, and, moreover, for any subsets $A_0,\ldots, A_m \subset R$ such that $|A_0|\cdots |A_m| \geq |R|^{(m+1)(1-γ)}$, there is a nontrivial configuration $(x, x+P_1(y), \ldots, x+P_m(y)) \in A_0\times \cdots \times A_m$. The fact that general rings have zero divisors is the source of many obstacles, which we overcome; for example, by studying character sums, we develop a bound on the number of roots of an integer polynomial over a general finite commutative ring, a result which is of independent interest.
Improved bounds for covering hypergraphs
The Graham-Pollak theorem states that at least $n-1$ bicliques are required to partition the edge set of the complete graph on $n$ vertices. In this paper, we provide improvements for the generalizations of coverings of graphs and hypergraphs for some specific multiplicities. We study an extension of Katona Szemerédi theorem to $r$-uniform hypergraphs. We also discuss the $r$-partite covering number and matching number and how large the $r$-partite partition number would be in terms of $r$-partite covering number for $r$-uniform hypergraphs.

Fix a prime $p\geq 11$. We show that there exists a positive integer $m$ such that any subset of $\mathbb{F}_p^n\times\mathbb{F}_p^n$ containing no nontrivial configurations of the form $(x,y),(x,y+z),(x,y+2z),(x+z,y)$ must have density $\ll 1/\log_{m}{n}$, where $\log_{m}$ denotes the $m$-fold iterated logarithm. This gives the first reasonable bound in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for a two-dimensional four-point configuration in any setting.

Given a graph $G$ and an integer $\ell\ge 2$, we denote by $α_{\ell}(G)$ the maximum size of a $K_{\ell}$-free subset of vertices in $V(G)$. A recent question of Nenadov and Pehova asks for determining the best possible minimum degree conditions forcing clique-factors in $n$-vertex graphs $G$ with $α_{\ell}(G) = o(n)$, which can be seen as a Ramsey--Turán variant of the celebrated Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem. In this paper we find the asymptotical sharp minimum degree threshold for $K_r$-factors in $n$-vertex graphs $G$ with $α_\ell(G)=n^{1-o(1)}$ for all $r\ge \ell\ge 2$.

Furstenberg-Weiss have extended Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions to trees by showing that a large subset of the tree contains arbitrarily long arithmetic subtrees. We study higher dimensional versions that analogously extend the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem by demonstrating the existence of certain arithmetic structures in large subsets of a cartesian product of trees.

We study the following rainbow version of subgraph containment problems in a family of (hyper)graphs, which generalizes the classical subgraph containment problems in a single host graph. For a collection $\textbf{G}=\{G_1, G_2,\ldots, G_{m}\}$ of not necessarily distinct $k$-graphs on the same vertex set $[n]$, a (sub)graph $H$ on $[n]$ is rainbow if there exists an injection $\varphi: E(H)\rightarrow[m]$ such that $e\in E(G_{\varphi(e)})$ for each $e\in E(H)$. Note that if $|E(H)|=m$, then $\varphi$ is a bijection and thus $H$ contains exactly one edge from each $G_i$. Our main results focus on rainbow clique-factors in (hyper)graph systems with minimum $d$-degree conditions. Specifically, we establish the following: (1) A rainbow analogue of an asymptotical version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem, namely, if $t\mid n$ and $δ(G_i)\geq(1-\frac{1}{t}+\varepsilon)n$ for each $i\in[\frac{n}{t}\binom{t}{2}]$, then $\textbf{G}$ contains a rainbow $K_t$-factor; (2) Essentially a minimum $d$-degree condition forcing a perfect matching in a $k$-graph also forces rainbow perfect matchings in $k$-graph systems for $d\in[k-1]$. The degree assumptions in both results are asymptotically best possible (although the minimum $d$-degree condition forcing a perfect matching in a $k$-graph is in general unknown). For (1) we also discuss two directed versions and a multipartite version. Finally, to establish these results, we in fact provide a general framework to attack this type of problems, which reduces it to subproblems with finitely many colors.

A collection of integer sequences is jointly ergodic if for every ergodic measure preserving system the multiple ergodic averages, with iterates given by this collection of sequences, converge in the mean to the product of the integrals. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for joint ergodicity that are flexible enough to recover most of the known examples of jointly ergodic sequences and also allow us to answer some related open problems. An interesting feature of our arguments is that they avoid deep tools from ergodic theory that were previously used to establish similar results. Our approach is primarily based on an ergodic variant of a technique pioneered by Peluse and Prendiville in order to give quantitative variants for the finitary version of the polynomial Szemerédi theorem.

A perfect $K_r$-tiling in a graph $G$ is a collection of vertex-disjoint copies of the clique $K_r$ in $G$ covering every vertex of $G$. The famous Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem determines the minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect $K_r$-tiling in a graph $G$. The notion of discrepancy appears in many branches of mathematics. In the graph setting, one assigns the edges of a graph $G$ labels from $\{-1,1\}$, and one seeks substructures $F$ of $G$ that have `high' discrepancy (i.e. the sum of the labels of the edges in $F$ is far from $0$). In this paper we determine the minimum degree threshold for a graph to contain a perfect $K_r$-tiling of high discrepancy.
Lower bounds in the polynomial Szemerédi theorem
We construct large subsets of the first $N$ positive integers which avoid certain arithmetic configurations. In particular, we construct a set of order $N^{0.7685}$ lacking the configuration $\{x,x+y,x+y^2\},$ surpassing the $N^{3/4}$ limit of Ruzsa's construction for sets lacking a square difference. We also extend Ruzsa's construction to sets lacking polynomial differences for a wide class of univariate polynomials. Finally, we turn to multivariate differences, constructing a set of order $N^{1/2}$ lacking a difference equal to a sum of two squares. This is in contrast to the analogous problem of sets lacking a difference equal to a prime minus one, where the current record is of order $N^{o(1)}.$

We provide upper bounds for the size of subsets of finite fields lacking the polynomial progression $$ x, x+y, ..., x+(m-1)y, x+y^m, ..., x+y^{m+k-1}.$$ These are the first known upper bounds in the polynomial Szemerédi theorem for the case when polynomials are neither linearly independent nor homogeneous of the same degree. We moreover improve known bounds for subsets of finite fields lacking arithmetic progressions with a difference coming from the set of $k$-th power residues, i.e. configurations of the form $$ x, x+y^k, ..., x+(m-1)y^k.$$ Both results follow from an estimate of the number of such progressions in an arbitrary subset of a finite field.
Quantitative bounds in the nonlinear Roth theorem
We show that there exists $c>0$ such that any subset of $\{1, \dots, N\}$ of density at least $(\log\log{N})^{-c}$ contains a nontrivial progression of the form $x,x+y,x+y^2$. This is the first quantitatively effective version of the Bergelson--Leibman polynomial Szemerédi theorem for a progression involving polynomials of differing degrees. Our key innovation is an inverse theorem characterising sets for which the number of configurations $x,x+y,x+y^2$ deviates substantially from the expected value. In proving this, we develop the first effective instance of a concatenation theorem of Tao and Ziegler, with polynomial bounds.

Let $P_1,\dots,P_m\in\mathbb{Z}[y]$ be any linearly independent polynomials with zero constant term. We show that there exists a $γ>0$ such that any subset of $\mathbb{F}_q$ of size at least $q^{1-γ}$ contains a nontrivial polynomial progression $x,x+P_1(y),\dots,x+P_m(y)$, provided the characteristic of $\mathbb{F}_q$ is large enough.

Green and Tao famously proved in 2005 that any subset of the primes of fixed positive density contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. Green had previously shown that in fact any subset of the primes of relative density tending to zero sufficiently slowly contains a 3-term term progression. This was followed by work of Helfgott and de Roton, and Naslund, who improved the bounds on the relative density in the case of 3-term progressions. The aim of this note is to present an analogous result for longer progressions by combining a quantified version of the relative Szemerédi theorem given by Conlon, Fox and Zhao with Henriot's estimates of the enveloping sieve weights.
Patterns in Random Fractals

We characterize the existence of certain geometric configurations in the fractal percolation limit set $A$ in terms of the almost sure dimension of $A$. Some examples of the configurations we study are: homothetic copies of finite sets, angles, distances, and volumes of simplices. In the spirit of relative Szemerédi theorems for random discrete sets, we also consider the corresponding problem for sets of positive $ν$-measure, where $ν$ is the natural measure on $A$. In both cases we identify the dimension threshold for each class of configurations. These results are obtained by investigating the intersections of the products of $m$ independent realizations of $A$ with transversal planes and, more generally, algebraic varieties, and extend some well known features of independent percolation on trees to a setting with long-range dependencies.
Multiplicative richness of additively large sets in $\mathbb{Z}^d$
In their proof of the IP Szemerédi theorem, a far reaching extension of the classic theorem of Szemerédi on arithmetic progressions, Furstenberg and Katznelson introduced an important class of additively large sets called $\text{IP}_{\text{r}}^*$ sets which underlies recurrence aspects in dynamics and is instrumental to enhanced formulations of combinatorial results. The authors recently showed that additive $\text{IP}_{\text{r}}^*$ subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ are multiplicatively rich with respect to every multiplication on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ without zero divisors (e.g. multiplications induced by degree $d$ number fields). In this paper, we explain the relationships between classes of multiplicative largeness with respect to different multiplications on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. We show, for example, that in contrast to the case for $\mathbb{Z}$, there are infinitely many different notions of multiplicative piecewise syndeticity for subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^d$ when $d \geq 2$. This is accomplished by using the associated algebra representations to prove the existence of sets which are large with respect to some multiplications while small with respect to others. In the process, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a linear transformation to preserve a class of multiplicatively large sets. One consequence of our results is that additive $\text{IP}_{\text{r}}^*$ sets are multiplicatively rich in infinitely many genuinely different ways. We conclude by cataloging a number of sources of additive $\text{IP}_{\text{r}}^*$ sets from combinatorics and dynamics.

The Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem states that for any integer $r \ge 1$ and any multiple $n$ of $r$, if $G$ is a graph on $n$ vertices and $δ(G) \ge (1 - 1/r)n$, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/r$ vertex-disjoint copies of the complete graph on $r$ vertices. We prove a very general analogue of this result for directed graphs: for any integer $r \ge 4$ and any sufficiently large multiple $n$ of $r$, if $G$ is a directed graph on $n$ vertices and every vertex is incident to at least $2(1 - 1/r)n - 1$ directed edges, then $G$ can be partitioned into $n/r$ vertex-disjoint subgraphs of size $r$ each of which contain every tournament on $r$ vertices. A related Turán-type result is also proven.
Closest integer polynomial multiple recurrence along shifted primes

Following an approach presented by N. Frantzikinakis, B. Host and B. Kra, we show that the parameters in the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem for closest integer polynomials have non-empty intersection with the set of shifted primes $\mathbb{P}-1$ (or similarly of $\mathbb{P}+1$). Using the Furstenberg Correspondence Principle, we show this result by recasting it as a polynomial multiple recurrence result in measure ergodic theory. Furthermore, we obtain integer part polynomial convergence results by the same method, which is a transference principle that enables one to deduce results for $\mathbb{Z}$-actions from results for flows. We also give some applications of our approach on Gowers uniform sets.
On the removal lemma for linear configurations in finite abelian groups
We present a general framework to represent discrete configuration systems using hypergraphs. This representation allows one to transfer combinatorial removal lemmas to their analogues for configuration systems. These removal lemmas claim that a system without many configurations can be made configuration-free by removing a few of its constituent elements. As applications of this approach we give, an alternative proof of the removal lemma for permutations by Cooper, a general version of a removal lemma for linear systems in finite abelian groups, an interpretation of the mentioned removal lemma in terms of subgroups, and an alternative proof of the counting version of the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem in abelian groups with generalizations.

We establish results with an arithmetic flavor that generalize the polynomial multidimensional Szemeredi theorem and related multiple recurrence and convergence results in ergodic theory. For instance, we show that in all these statements we can restrict the implicit parameter to those integers that have an even number of distinct prime factors, or satisfy any other congruence condition. In order to obtain these refinements we study the limiting behavior of some closely related multiple ergodic averages with weights given by appropriately chosen multiplicative functions. These averages are then analysed using a recent structural result for bounded multiplicative functions proved by the authors.

We say that a graph $G$ has a perfect $H$-packing if there exists a set of vertex-disjoint copies of $H$ which cover all the vertices in $G$. The seminal Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem characterises the minimum degree that ensures a graph $G$ contains a perfect $K_r$-packing. Balogh, Kostochka and Treglown proposed a degree sequence version of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem which, if true, gives a strengthening of the Hajnal--Szemerédi theorem. In this paper we prove this conjecture asymptotically. Another fundamental result in the area is the Alon--Yuster theorem which gives a minimum degree condition that ensures a graph contains a perfect $H$-packing for an \emph{arbitrary} graph $H$. We give a wide-reaching generalisation of this result by answering another conjecture of Balogh, Kostochka and Treglown on the degree sequence of a graph that forces a perfect $H$-packing. We also prove a degree sequence result concerning perfect transitive tournament packings in directed graphs. The proofs blend together the regularity and absorbing methods.
