Clock theorems for triangulated surfaces
We investigate triangulations of the two-dimensional sphere and torus with the faces properly colored white and black. We focus on matchings between white triangles and incident vertices. On the torus our objects are perfect pairings, whereas on the sphere this is only true after removing one triangle and its vertices. In the latter case, such matchings (first studied by Tutte) extend the notion of state in Kauffman's formal knot theory and we show that his Clock Theorem, in its form due to Gilmer and Litherland, also extends: the set of matchings naturally forms a distributive lattice. Here the role of state transposition is played by a simple local operation about black triangles. By contrast, on the torus, the analogous state transition graph is usually disconnected: some of its components still form distributive lattices with global maxima and minima, while other components contain directed cycles and are without local extrema.
Average Betti numbers of induced subcomplexes in triangulations of manifolds
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 27:3 (2020), P3.40 • View PublicationBIB
We study a variation of Bagchi and Datta's $σ$-vector of a simplicial complex $C$, whose entries are defined as weighted averages of Betti numbers of induced subcomplexes of $C$. We show that these invariants satisfy an Alexander-Dehn-Sommerville type identity, and behave nicely under natural operations on triangulated manifolds and spheres such as connected sums and bistellar flips. In the language of commutative algebra, the invariants are weighted sums of graded Betti numbers of the Stanley-Reisner ring of $C$. This interpretation implies, by a result of Adiprasito, that the Billera-Lee sphere maximizes these invariants among triangulated spheres with a given $f$-vector. For the first entry of $σ$, we extend this bound to the class of strongly connected pure complexes. As an application, we show how upper bounds on $σ$ can be used to obtain lower bounds on the $f$-vector of triangulated $4$-manifolds with transitive symmetry on vertices and prescribed vector of Betti numbers.

Combinatorial cluster expansion formulas from triangulated surfaces
Published in Electron. J. Combin. Vol. 26, 2 (2019) P2.33 • View PublicationBIB
We give a cluster expansion formula for cluster algebras with principal coefficients defined from triangulated surfaces in terms of perfect matchings of angles. Our formula simplifies the cluster expansion formula given by Musiker-Schiffler-Williams in terms of perfect matchings of snake graphs. A key point of our proof is to give a bijection between perfect matchings of angles in some triangulated polygon and perfect matchings of the corresponding snake graph. Moreover, they also correspond bijectively with perfect matchings of the corresponding bipartite graph and minimal cuts of the corresponding quiver with potential.

Quantum cluster algebras from unpunctured triangulated surfaces: arbitrary coefficients and quantization
Published in Selecta Mathematica--New series 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We study quantum cluster algebras from unpunctured surfaces with arbitrary coefficients and quantization. We first give a new proof of the Laurent expansion formulas for commutative cluster algebras from unpunctured surfaces, we then give the quantum Laurent expansion formulas for the quantum cluster algebras. Particularly, this gives a combinatorial proof of the positivity for such class of quantum cluster algebras.

Tropical friezes and the index in higher homological algebra
Cluster categories and cluster algebras encode two dimensional structures. For instance, the Auslander--Reiten quiver of a cluster category can be drawn on a surface, and there is a class of cluster algebras determined by surfaces with marked points. Cluster characters are maps from cluster categories (and more general triangulated categories) to cluster algebras. They have a tropical shadow in the form of so-called tropical friezes, which are maps from cluster categories (and more general triangulated categories) to the integers. This paper will define higher dimensional tropical friezes. One of the motivations is the higher dimensional cluster categories of Oppermann and Thomas, which encode $( d+1 )$-dimensional structures for an integer $d \geqslant 1$. They are $( d+2 )$-angulated categories, which belong to the subject of higher homological algebra. We will define higher dimensional tropical friezes as maps from higher cluster categories (and more general $( d+2 )$-angulated categories) to the integers. Following Palu, we will define a notion of $( d+2 )$-angulated index, establish some of its properties, and use it to construct higher dimensional tropical friezes.

Some properties of Bowlin and Brin's color graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bowlin and Brin defined the class of color graphs, whose vertices are triangulated polygons compatible with a fixed four-coloring of the polygon vertices. In this article it is proven that each color graph has a vertex-induced embedding in a hypercube, and an upper bound is given for the hypercube dimension. The color graphs for $n$-gons up to $n=8$ are listed and some of their features are discussed. Finally it is shown that certain color graphs cannot be isometrically embedded in a hypercube of any dimension.

Systolic inequalities for K3 surfaces via stability conditions
Published in Math. Z., 2022 • Search Publication
We introduce the notions of categorical systoles and categorical volumes of Bridgeland stability conditions on triangulated categories. We prove that for any projective K3 surface, there exists a constant C depending only on the rank and discriminant of its Picard group, such that $$\mathrm{sys}(σ)^2\leq C\cdot\mathrm{vol}(σ)$$ holds for any stability condition on the derived category of coherent sheaves on the K3 surface. This is an algebro-geometric generalization of a classical systolic inequality on two-tori. We also discuss applications of this inequality in symplectic geometry.

Laurent phenomenon algebras arising from surfaces II: Laminated surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
It was shown by Fock, Goncharov and Fomin, Shapiro, Thurston that some cluster algebras arise from triangulated orientable suraces. Subsequently Dupont and Palesi generalised this construction to include unpunctured non-orientable surfaces, giving birth to quasi-cluster algebras. Previously we linked this framework to Lam and Pylyavskyy's Laurent phenomenon algebras, showing that unpunctured surfaces admit an LP structure. In this paper we extend quasi-cluster algebras to include punctured surfaces. Moreover, by adding laminations to the surface we demonstrate that all punctured and unpunctured surfaces admit LP structures.

Determining the trisection genus of orientable and non-orientable PL 4-manifolds through triangulations
Published in 34th International Symposium on Computational Geometry (SoCG 2018), Leibniz International Proceedings in Informatics (LIPIcs), vol. 99, 71:1-71:13, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
Gay and Kirby recently introduced the concept of a trisection for arbitrary smooth, oriented closed 4-manifolds, and with it a new topological invariant, called the trisection genus. This paper improves and implements an algorithm due to Bell, Hass, Rubinstein and Tillmann to compute trisections using triangulations, and extends it to non-orientable 4-manifolds. Lower bounds on trisection genus are given in terms of Betti numbers and used to determine the trisection genus of all standard simply connected PL 4-manifolds. In addition, we construct trisections of small genus directly from the simplicial structure of triangulations using the Budney-Burton census of closed triangulated 4-manifolds. These experiments include the construction of minimal genus trisections of the non-orientable 4-manifolds $S^3 \tilde{\times} S^1$ and $\mathbb{R}P^4$.

On the treewidth of triangulated 3-manifolds
Published in Journal of Computational Geometry, 10(2):70-98, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
In graph theory, as well as in 3-manifold topology, there exist several width-type parameters to describe how "simple" or "thin" a given graph or 3-manifold is. These parameters, such as pathwidth or treewidth for graphs, or the concept of thin position for 3-manifolds, play an important role when studying algorithmic problems; in particular, there is a variety of problems in computational 3-manifold topology - some of them known to be computationally hard in general - that become solvable in polynomial time as soon as the dual graph of the input triangulation has bounded treewidth. In view of these algorithmic results, it is natural to ask whether every 3-manifold admits a triangulation of bounded treewidth. We show that this is not the case, i.e., that there exists an infinite family of closed 3-manifolds not admitting triangulations of bounded pathwidth or treewidth (the latter implies the former, but we present two separate proofs). We derive these results from work of Agol, of Scharlemann and Thompson, and of Scharlemann, Schultens and Saito by exhibiting explicit connections between the topology of a 3-manifold M on the one hand and width-type parameters of the dual graphs of triangulations of M on the other hand, answering a question that had been raised repeatedly by researchers in computational 3-manifold topology. In particular, we show that if a closed, orientable, irreducible, non-Haken 3-manifold M has a triangulation of treewidth (resp. pathwidth) k then the Heegaard genus of M is at most 18(k+1) (resp. 4(3k+1)).

A Cheeger-type exponential bound for the number of triangulated manifolds
Published • View PublicationBIB
In terms of the number of triangles, it is known that there are more than exponentially many triangulations of surfaces, but only exponentially many triangulations of surfaces with bounded genus. In this paper we provide a first geometric extension of this result to higher dimensions. We show that in terms of the number of facets, there are only exponentially many geometric triangulations of space forms with bounded geometry in the sense of Cheeger (curvature and volume bounded below, and diameter bounded above). This establishes a combinatorial version of Cheeger's finiteness theorem. Further consequences of our work are: (1) There are exponentially many geometric triangulations of $S^d$. (2) There are exponentially many convex triangulations of the d-ball.

The Pachner graph of 2-spheres
It is well-known that the Pachner graph of $n$-vertex triangulated $2$-spheres is connected, i.e., each pair of $n$-vertex triangulated $2$-spheres can be turned into each other by a sequence of edge flips for each $n\geq 4$. In this article, we study various induced subgraphs of this graph. In particular, we prove that the subgraph of $n$-vertex flag $2$-spheres distinct from the double cone is still connected. In contrast, we show that the subgraph of $n$-vertex stacked $2$-spheres has at least as many connected components as there are trees on $\lfloor\frac{n-5}{3}\rfloor$ nodes with maximum node-degree at most four.
Some Counterexamples for Compatible Triangulations
We consider the conjecture by Aichholzer, Aurenhammer, Hurtado, and Krasser that any two points sets with the same cardinality and the same size convex hull can be triangulated in the "same" way, more precisely via \emph{compatible triangulations}. We show counterexamples to various strengthened versions of this conjecture.
On Generalized Heawood Inequalities for Manifolds: a van Kampen--Flores-type Nonembeddability Result
Published • View PublicationBIB
The fact that the complete graph $K_5$ does not embed in the plane has been generalized in two independent directions. On the one hand, the solution of the classical Heawood problem for graphs on surfaces established that the complete graph $K_n$ embeds in a closed surface $M$ (other than the Klein bottle) if and only if $(n-3)(n-4)\leq 6b_1(M)$, where $b_1(M)$ is the first $\mathbb Z_2$-Betti number of $M$. On the other hand, van Kampen and Flores proved that the $k$-skeleton of the $n$-dimensional simplex (the higher-dimensional analogue of $K_{n+1}$) embeds in $\mathbb R^{2k}$ if and only if~$n \le 2k+1$. Two decades ago, Kühnel conjectured that the $k$-skeleton of the $n$-simplex embeds in a compact, $(k-1)$-connected $2k$-manifold with $k$th $\mathbb Z_2$-Betti number $b_k$ only if the following generalized Heawood inequality holds: $\binom{n-k-1}{k+1} \le \binom{2k+1}{k+1}b_k$. This is a common generalization of the case of graphs on surfaces as well as the van Kampen--Flores theorem (the special cases $k=1$ and $b_k=0$, respectively), and also closely related to the theory of face numbers of triangulated manifolds. In the spirit of Kühnel's conjecture, we prove that if the $k$-skeleton of the $n$-simplex embeds in a $2k$-manifold with $k$th $\mathbb Z_2$-Betti number $b_k$, then $n \le 2b_k\binom{2k+2}{k} + 2k + 4$. This bound is weaker than the generalized Heawood inequality, but does not require the assumption that $M$ is $(k-1)$-connected. Our results generalize to maps without $q$-covered points, in the spirit of Tverberg's theorem, for $q$ a prime power. Our proof uses a result of Volovikov about maps that satisfy a certain homological triviality condition.

The mechanical modes of a $2$-periodic triangulated surface
A recent "hidden symmetry" conjecture of B. Gin-ge Chen et al is resolved, concerning the dimension of the mechanical modes of a generic $2$-periodic triangulated surface $O$ in $R^3$ whose structure graph corresponds to a triangular tiling of $R^2$. We introduce an indexing of the terms in an associated sparse determinant $p_O(z_1, z_2)$ by means of oriented $3$-colourings of the underlying sparse graph, and use this and vertex splitting arguments to show that $p_O(z_1,z_2)$ is palindromic or antipalindromic, up to a shift index. This implies the conjectured dimension $1$ phenomenon for these surfaces. As a corollary we obtain the topological stability of the generic modes of a $1$-periodic triangulated nanotube.

Geodesic and curvature of piecewise flat Finsler surfaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
A piecewise flat Finsler metric on a triangulated surface $M$ is a metric whose restriction to any triangle is a flat triangle in some Minkowski space with straight edges. One of the main purposes of this work is to study the properties of geodesics on a piecewise flat Finsler surface, especially when it meets a vertex. Using the edge-crossing equation, we define two classes of piecewise flat Finsler surfaces, namely, Landsberg type and Berwald type. We deduce an explicit condition for a geodesic to be extendable at a vertex, and define the curvature which measures the \textit{amount} of such extensions. The dependence of the curvature on an incoming or outgoing tangent direction corresponds to the feature of flag curvature in Finsler geometry. When the piecewise flat Finsler surface is of Landsberg type, the curvature is only relevant to the vertex, and we prove a combinatoric Gauss-Bonnet formula which generalizes both the Gauss-Bonnet formulas for piecewise flat Riemannian manifolds and for smooth Landsberg surfaces.

On local combinatorial formulas for Chern classes of triangulated circle bundle
Published • View PublicationBIB
Principal circle bundle over a PL polyhedron can be triangulated and thus obtains combinatorics. The triangulation is assembled from triangulated circle bundles over simplices. To every triangulated circle bundle over a simplex we associate a necklace (in combinatorial sense). We express rational local formulas for all powers of first Chern class in the terms of mathematical expectations of parities of the associated necklaces. This rational parity is a combinatorial isomorphism invariant of triangulated circle bundle over simplex, measuring mixing by triangulation of the circular graphs over vertices of the simplex. The goal of this note is to sketch the logic of deduction these formulas from Kontsevitch's cyclic invariant connection form on metric polygons.

Mogami manifolds, nuclei, and 3D simplicial gravity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Mogami introduced in 1995 a large class of triangulated 3-dimensional pseudomanifolds, henceforth called "Mogami pseudomanifolds". He proved an exponential bound for the size of this class in terms of the number of tetrahedra. The question of whether all 3-balls are Mogami has remained open since, a positive answer would imply a much-desired exponential upper bound for the total number of 3-balls (and 3-spheres) with N tetrahedra. Here we provide a negative answer: many 3-balls are not Mogami. On the way to this result, we characterize the Mogami property in terms of nuclei, in the sense of Collet-Eckmann-Younan: "The only three-dimensional Mogami nucleus is the tetrahedron".
