A study on Vandermonde-like polynomial matrices
A new class of structured matrices is presented and a closed form formula for their determinant is established. This formula has strong connections with the one for Vandermonde matrices.

In this paper, we present an involution on some kind of colored $k$-ary trees which provides a combinatorial proof of a combinatorial sum involving the generalized Catalan numbers $C_{k,γ}(n)=\fracγ{k n+γ}{k n+γ\choose n}$. From the combinatorial sum, we refine the formula for $k$-ary trees and obtain an implicit formula for the generating function of the generalized Catalan numbers which obviously implies a Vandermonde type convolution generalized by Gould. Furthermore, we also obtain a combinatorial sum involving a vector generalization of the Catalan numbers by an extension of our involution.
Vandermondes in superspace
Superspace of rank $n$ is a $\mathbb{Q}$-algebra with $n$ commuting generators $x_1, \dots, x_n$ and $n$ anticommuting generators $θ_1, \dots, θ_n$. We present an extension of the Vandermonde determinant to superspace which depends on a sequence $\mathbf{a} = (a_1, \dots, a_r)$ of nonnegative integers of length $r \leq n$. We use superspace Vandermondes to construct graded representations of the symmetric group. This construction recovers hook-shaped Tanisaki quotients, the coinvariant ring for the Delta Conjecture constructed by Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono, and a superspace quotient related to positroids and Chern plethysm constructed by Billey, Rhoades, and Tewari. We define a notion of partial differentiation with respect to anticommuting variables to construct doubly graded modules from superspace Vandermondes. These doubly graded modules carry a natural ring structure which satisfies a 2-dimensional version of Poincaré duality. The application of polarization operators gives rise to other bigraded modules which give a conjectural module for the symmetric function $Δ'_{e_{k-1}} e_n$ appearing in the Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel, and Wilson.
Binomial arrays and generalized Vandermonde identities
In previous work on Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, certain remarkable hexagonal arrays of integers are constructed that display behaviors found in Pascal's Triangle. We explain these behaviors further using the binomial transform and discrete convolution. Here we begin by introducing the notion of a binomial array and develop several "hockey stick" rules. Then we give an algorithm that generalizes the classical Vandermonde Identity; this produces infinite families of summation formulas, which we use to expand and prove certain combinatorial identities for the Catalan numbers. Finally, we recast the theory in terms of the finite-dimensional representation theory of $SL(2, F)$.
A Categorification of the Vandermonde Determinant

In the spirit of Bar Natan's construction of Khovanov homology, we give a categorification of the Vandermonde determinant. Given a sequence of positive integers $\vec{x}=(x_1,...,x_n)$, we construct a commutative diagram in the shape of the Bruhat order on $S_n$ whose nodes are colored smoothings of the $2$-strand torus link $T_{2,n}$, and whose arrows are colored cobordisms. An application of a TQFT to this diagram yields a chain complex whose Euler characteristic is the Vandermonde determinant evaluated at $\vec{x}$. A generalization to arbitrary link diagrams is given, producing categorifications of certain generalized Vandermonde determinants. We also address functoriality of this construction.

We consider two different interpretations of the Chu--Vandermonde identity: as an identity for polynomials, and as an identity for infinite matrices. Each interpretation leads to a class of possible generalizations, and in both cases we obtain a complete characterization of the solutions.
Determinantal elliptic Selberg integrals
The classical Selberg integral contains a power of the Vandermonde determinant. When that power is a square, it is easy to prove Selberg's identity by interpreting it as a determinant of one-variable integrals. We give similar proofs of summation and transformation formulas for continuous and discrete elliptic Selberg integrals. In the continuous case, the same proof was previously given by Noumi. Special cases of these identities have found applications in combinatorics.
Generating functions for purely crossing partitions
The generating function for the number of purely crossing partitions of {1,...,n} is found in terms of the generating function for Bell numbers. Further results about generating functions for asymptotic moments of certain random Vandermonde matrices are derived.

This work enrols the research line of M. Haiman on the Operator Theorem (the old operator conjecture). This theorem states that the smallest $\mathfrak{S}_n$-module closed under taking partial derivatives and closed under the action of polarization operators that contains the Vandermonde determinant is the space of diagonal harmonics polynomials. We start generalizing the context of this theorem to the context of polynomials in $\ell$ sets of $n$ variables $x_{ij}$ with $1\leq i\leq \ell$ et $1\leq j\leq n$. Given a $\mathfrak{S}_n$-stable family of homogeneous polynomials in the variables $x_{ij}$ the smallest vector space closed under taking partial derivatives and closed under the action of polarization operators that contains $F$ is the polarization module generated by the family $F$. These polarization modules are all representation of the direct product $\mathfrak{S}_n\times{GL}_{\ell}(\mathbb{C})$. In order to study the decomposition into irreducible submodules, we compute the graded Frobenius characteristic of these modules. For several cases of $\mathfrak{S}_n$-stable families of homogeneous polynomials in $n$ variables, for every $n\geq 1$, we show general formulas for this graded characteristic in a global manner, independent of the value of $\ell$.

In this paper, we study a distribution of labeled particles on a continuous ring. It arises in three different ways, all related to the multi-type TASEP on a ring. We prove formulas for the probability density function for some permutations and give conjectures for a larger class. We give a complete conjecture for the probability of two particles i, j being next to each other on the cycle, for which we prove some cases. We also find that two natural events associated to the process have exactly the same probability expressed as a Vandermonde determinant. It is unclear whether this is just a coincidence or a consequence of a deeper connection.

A recent paper of Bump, McNamara and Nakasuji introduced a factorial version of Tokuyama's identity, expressing the partition function of a six vertex model as the product of a t-deformed Vandermonde and a Schur function. Here we provide an extension of their result by exploiting the language of primed shifted tableaux, with its proof based on the use of non-intersecting lattice paths.

We start generalizing the context of this theorem to the context of polynomials in $\ell$ sets of $n$ variables $x_{ij}$ with $1\leq i\leq \ell$ et $1\leq j\leq n$. We evaluate the hyperpfaffian of a skew-symmetric $k$-ary polynomial $f$ of degree $k/2 \cdot (n-1)$. The result is a product of the Vandermonde product and a certain expression involving the coefficients of the polynomial $f$. The proof utilizes a sign reversing involution on a set of weighted, oriented partitions. When restricting to the classical case when $k=2$ and the polynomial is $(x_{j} - x_{i})^{n-1}$, we obtain an identity due to Torelli.

We analyse a generalisation of the Quicksort algorithm, where k uniformly at random chosen pivots are used for partitioning an array of n distinct keys. Specifically, the expected cost of this scheme is obtained, under the assumption of linearity of the cost needed for the partition process. The integration constants of the expected cost are computed using Vandermonde matrices.
On Block Security of Regenerating Codes at the MBR Point for Distributed Storage Systems

A passive adversary can eavesdrop stored content or downloaded content of some storage nodes, in order to learn illegally about the file stored across a distributed storage system (DSS). Previous work in the literature focuses on code constructions that trade storage capacity for perfect security. In other words, by decreasing the amount of original data that it can store, the system can guarantee that the adversary, which eavesdrops up to a certain number of storage nodes, obtains no information (in Shannon's sense) about the original data. In this work we introduce the concept of block security for DSS and investigate minimum bandwidth regenerating (MBR) codes that are block secure against adversaries of varied eavesdropping strengths. Such MBR codes guarantee that no information about any group of original data units up to a certain size is revealed, without sacrificing the storage capacity of the system. The size of such secure groups varies according to the number of nodes that the adversary can eavesdrop. We show that code constructions based on Cauchy matrices provide block security. The opposite conclusion is drawn for codes based on Vandermonde matrices.
Formal multidimensional integrals, stuffed maps, and topological recursion

We show that the large N expansion in the multi-trace 1 formal hermitian matrix model is governed by the topological recursion of [Eynard and Orantin, 2007] with initial conditions. In terms of a 1d gas of eigenvalues, this model includes - on top of the squared Vandermonde - multilinear interactions of any order between the eigenvalues. In this problem, the initial data (W10,W20) of the topological recursion is characterized: for W10, by a non-linear, non-local Riemann-Hilbert problem on a discontinuity locus to determine ; for W20, by a related but linear, non-local Riemann-Hilbert problem on the discontinuity locus. In combinatorics, this model enumerates discrete surfaces (maps) whose elementary 2-cells can have any topology - W10 being the generating series of disks and W20 that of cylinders. In particular, by substitution one may consider maps whose elementary cells are themselves maps, for which we propose the name "stuffed maps". In a sense, our results complete the program of the "moment method" initiated in the 90s to compute the formal 1/N in the one hermitian matrix model.
Some Determinantal Identities
Some applications of a result, which is proved recently, is considered. We first prove three determinantal identities concerning the binomial coefficient and Stirling numbers of the first and the second kind. We also easily obtain the inverse of the Vandermonde matrix. Then we derive a recurrence formula for sums of powers, which is similar to the well-known Newton identity. In the last section, we consider some sequences given by a homologous linear recurrence equation.
A determinantal identity for the Fibonacci numbers of higher order is proved.
We finish with an expression of the generalized Vandermonde determinant in terms of the standard Vandermonde determinant and elementary symmetric polynomials.
The Boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin Graph: New Proof of Borodin-Olshanski's Formula, and its q-analogue

In the recent paper [arXiv:1109.1412], Borodin and Olshanski have presented a novel proof of the celebrated Edrei-Voiculescu theorem which describes the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph as a region in an infinite-dimensional coordinate space. This graph encodes branching of irreducible characters of finite-dimensional unitary groups. Points of the boundary of the Gelfand-Tsetlin graph can be identified with finite indecomposable (= extreme) characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group. An equivalent description identifies the boundary with the set of doubly infinite totally nonnegative sequences.
A principal ingredient of Borodin-Olshanski's proof is a new explicit determinantal formula for the number of semi-standard Young tableaux of a given skew shape (or of Gelfand-Tsetlin schemes of trapezoidal shape). We present a simpler and more direct derivation of that formula using the Cauchy-Binet summation involving the inverse Vandermonde matrix. We also obtain a q-generalization of that formula, namely, a new explicit determinantal formula for arbitrary q-specializations of skew Schur polynomials. Its particular case is related to the q-Gelfand-Tsetlin graph and q-Toeplitz matrices introduced and studied by Gorin [arXiv:1011.1769].

Since every even power of the Vandermonde determinant is a symmetric polynomial, we want to understand its decomposition in terms of the basis of Schur functions. We investigate several combinatorial properties of the coefficients in the decomposition. In particular, we give recursive formulas for the coefficient of the Schur function $s_{\m}$ in the decomposition of an even power of the Vandermonde determinant in $n + 1$ variables in terms of the coefficient of the Schur function $s_ł$ in the decomposition of the same even power of the Vandermonde determinant in $n$ variables if the Young diagram of $\m$ is obtained from the Young diagram of $ł$ by adding a tetris type shape to the top or to the left. An extended abstract containing the statement of the results presented here appeared in the Proceedings of FPSAC11
