Confluent Vandermonde matrix and related topics
In this note, we explore the connections between the confluent Vandermonde matrix over an arbitrary field and several mathematical topics, including interpolation polynomials, Hasse derivatives, LU factorization, companion matrices and their Jordan forms, and the partial fraction decomposition. Using a unified approach based on polynomial evaluations and derivative computations at selected points, we provide accessible proofs that not only clarify key results but also offer insights for both experienced researchers and those new to the subject.

We consider polynomials of the form $\operatorname{s}_λ(y_1^{[\varkappa_1]},\ldots,y_n^{[\varkappa_n]})$, where $λ$ is an integer partition, $\operatorname{s}_λ$ is the Schur polynomial associated to $λ$, and $y_j^{[\varkappa_j]}$ denotes $y_j$ repeated $\varkappa_j$ times. We represent $\operatorname{s}_λ(y_1^{[\varkappa_1]},\ldots,y_n^{[\varkappa_n]})$ as a quotient whose the denominator is the determinant of the confluent Vandermonde matrix, and the numerator is the determinant of some generalized confluent Vandermonde matrix. We give three algebraic proofs of this formula.

Factorization structures occur in toric differential and discrete geometry, and can be viewed in multiple ways, e.g., as objects determining substantial classes of explicit toric Sasaki and Kähler geometries, as special coordinates on such, or as an apex generalisation of cyclic polytopes featuring a generalised Gale's evenness condition. This article presents a comprehensive study of factorization structures. It establishes their structure theory and introduces their use in the geometry of cones and polytopes. The article explains the construction of polytopes and cones compatible with a given factorization structure, and exemplifies it for product Segre-Veronese and Veronese factorization structures, where the latter case includes cyclic polytopes. Further, it derives the generalised Gale's evenness condition for compatible cones, polytopes and their duals, and explicitly describes faces of these. Factorization structures naturally provide generalised Vandermonde identities, which relate normals of any compatible polytope, and which are used for Veronese factorization structure to find examples of Delzant and rational Delzant compatible polytopes. The article offers a myriad of factorization structure examples, which are later characterised to be precisely factorization structures with decomposable curves, and raises the question if these encompass all factorization structures, i.e., the existence of an indecomposable factorization curve.
Generalized $n$-series and de Rham complexes
The goal of this article is to study some basic algebraic and combinatorial properties of "generalized $n$-series" over a commutative ring $R$, which are functions $s: \mathbf{Z}_{\geq 0} \to R$ satisfying a mild condition. A special example of generalized $n$-series is given by the $q$-integers $\frac{q^n-1}{q-1} \in \mathbf{Z}[\![q-1]\!]$. Given a generalized $n$-series $s$, one can define $s$-analogues of factorials (via $n!_s = \prod_{i=1}^n s(n)$) and binomial coefficients. We prove that Pascal's identity, the binomial identity, Lucas' theorem, and the Vandermonde identity admit $s$-analogues; each of these specialize to their appropriate $q$-analogue in the case of the $q$-integer generalized $n$-series. We also study the growth rates of generalized $n$-series defined over the integers. Finally, we define an $s$-analogue of the ($q$-)derivative, and prove $s$-analogues of the Poincaré lemma and the Cartier isomorphism for the affine line, as well as a pullback square due to Bhatt-Lurie.
Real Analytic Methods in the Formulations of some Combinatorial Inequalities
In this paper, we derive some new combinatorial inequalities by applying well known real analytic results like Hölder's inequality, Young's inequality, and Minkowiski's inequality to the recursively defined sequence $f_n$ of functions
\begin{align*}
f_0(x) & = χ_{(-1/2, 1/2)} (x), \nonumber
f_{n+1}(x) & = f_n(x+1/2)+ f_n(x-1/2), n \in \mathbb{N}\,\cup \,\{0\}. \end{align*}
Towards this goal, we derive the closed form of the aforementioned sequence $ (f_n)_{n\in \mathbb{N}\,\cup \,\{0\}}$ of functions and show that it is a sequence of simple functions that are linear combinations of characteristic functions of some unit intervals $ I_{n,i},\, i=0,1, ..., n $, with values the binomial coefficients $ \binom{n}{i}$ on each unit interval $I_{n,i}$. We show that $ f_n \in L^p(\mathbb{R})),\, 1\leq p \leq \infty $. Besides applying real analytic methods to formulate some combinatorial inequalities, we also illustrate the application of some combinatorial identities. For example, we use the Vandermonde convolution (or Vandermonde identity), in the study of some properties of the sequence of functions $ (f_n)_{n\in\mathbb{ N}\cup \{0\}}$. We show how the $L^2$ norm of $f_n$ is related to the Catalan numbers.

Let $Ω_n$ be the ring of polynomial-valued holomorphic differential forms on complex $n$-space, referred to in physics as the superspace ring of rank $n$. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts diagonally on $Ω_n$ by permuting commuting and anticommuting generators simultaneously. We let $SI_n \subseteq Ω_n$ be the ideal generated by $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term and study the quotient $SR_n = Ω_n / SI_n$ of superspace by this ideal. We calculate the doubly-graded Hilbert series of $SR_n$ and prove an `operator theorem' which characterizes the harmonic space $SH_n \subseteq Ω_n$ attached to $SR_n$ in terms of the Vandermonde determinant and certain differential operators. Our methods employ commutative algebra results which were used in the study of Hessenberg varieties. Our results prove conjectures of N. Bergeron, Li, Machacek, Sulzgruber, Swanson, Wallach, and Zabrocki.
$q$-Rational and $q$-Real Binomial Coefficients
We consider $q$-binomial coefficients built from the $q$-rational and $q$-real numbers defined by Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko in terms of continued fractions. We establish versions of both the $q$-Pascal identity and the $q$-binomial theorem in this setting. These results are then used to find more identities satisfied by the $q$-analogues of Morier-Genoud and Ovsienko, including a Chu--Vandermonde identity and $q$-Gamma function identities.

Let $F$ be a field and $M_n(F)$ the ring of $n \times n$ matrices over $F$. Given a subset $S$ of $M_n(F)$, the null ideal of $S$ is the set of all polynomials $f$ with coefficients from $M_n(F)$ such that $f(A) = 0$ for all $A \in S$. We say that $S$ is core if the null ideal of $S$ is a two-sided ideal of the polynomial ring $M_n(F)[x]$. We study sufficient conditions under which $S$ is core in the case where $S$ consists of $3 \times 3$ matrices, all of which share the same irreducible characteristic polynomial. In particular, we show that if $F$ is finite with $q$ elements and $|S| \geqslant q^3-q^2+1$, then $S$ is core. As a byproduct of our work, we obtain some results on block Vandermonde matrices, invertible matrix commutators, and graphs defined via an invertible difference relation.
Equality on all #CSP Instances Yields Constraint Function Isomorphism via Interpolation and Intertwiners

A fundamental result in the study of graph homomorphisms is Lovász's theorem that two graphs are isomorphic if and only if they admit the same number of homomorphisms from every graph. A line of work extending Lovász's result to more general types of graphs was recently capped by Cai and Govorov, who showed that it holds for graphs with vertex and edge weights from an arbitrary field of characteristic 0. In this work, we generalize from graph homomorphism -- a special case of #CSP with a single binary function -- to general #CSP by showing that two sets $\mathcal{F}$ and $\mathcal{G}$ of arbitrary constraint functions are isomorphic if and only if the partition function of any #CSP instance is unchanged when we replace the functions in $\mathcal{F}$ with those in $\mathcal{G}$. We give two very different proofs of this result. First, we demonstrate the power of the simple Vandermonde interpolation technique of Cai and Govorov by extending it to general #CSP. Second, we give a proof using the intertwiners of the automorphism group of a constraint function set, a concept from the representation theory of compact groups. This proof is a generalization of a classical version of the recent proof of the Lovász-type result by Mančinska and Roberson relating quantum isomorphism and homomorphisms from planar graphs.
On Vandermonde determinants via $n$-determinants
We use earlier defined notion of $n$- determinant to investigate sub-determinants of an extended Vandermonde matrix. Firstly, we demonstrate our method on a number of particular cases. Then we prove that all these results may be stated in terms of Schur's polynomials. In our main result, we prove that Schur polynomials are equal to minors of a fixed matrix, which entries are formed of elementary symmetric polynomials. Such a formula is known as the second Jaccobi-Trudi identity.

One can view a partial flag variety in $\mathbb{C}^n$ as an adjoint orbit $\mathcal{O}_λ$ inside the Lie algebra of $n \times n$ skew-Hermitian matrices. We use the orbit context to study the totally nonnegative part of a partial flag variety from an algebraic, geometric, and dynamical perspective. The paper has three main parts:
(1) We introduce the totally nonnegative part of $\mathcal{O}_λ$, and describe it explicitly in several cases. We define a twist map on it, which generalizes (in type $A$) a map of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990) on an isospectral manifold of Jacobi matrices.
(2) We study gradient flows on $\mathcal{O}_λ$ which preserve positivity, working in three natural Riemannian metrics. In the Kähler metric, positivity is preserved in many cases of interest, extending results of Galashin, Karp, and Lam (2017, 2019). In the normal metric, positivity is essentially never preserved on a generic orbit. In the induced metric, whether positivity is preserved appears to depends on the spacing of the eigenvalues defining the orbit.
(3) We present two applications. First, we discuss the topology of totally nonnegative flag varieties and amplituhedra. Galashin, Karp, and Lam (2017, 2019) showed that the former are homeomorphic to closed balls, and we interpret their argument in the orbit framework. We also show that a new family of amplituhedra, which we call twisted Vandermonde amplituhedra, are homeomorphic to closed balls. Second, we discuss the symmetric Toda flow on $\mathcal{O}_λ$. We show that it preserves positivity, and that on the totally nonnegative part, it is a gradient flow in the Kähler metric up to applying the twist map. This extends a result of Bloch, Flaschka, and Ratiu (1990).
Hankel Determinants of Certain Sequences Of Bernoulli Polynomials: A Direct Proof of an Inverse Matrix Entry from Statistics

We calculate the Hankel determinants of sequences of Bernoulli polynomials. This corresponding Hankel matrix comes from statistically estimating the variance in nonparametric regression. Besides its entries' natural and deep connection with Bernoulli polynomials, a special case of the matrix can be constructed from a corresponding Vandermonde matrix. As a result, instead of asymptotic analysis, we give a direct proof of calculating an entry of its inverse.
Lattice path enumeration for semi-magic squares of size three
We give formulas for enumerating directed paths in the graded poset of semi-magic squares of size three. We give two applications of these formulas: an advanced example of Vandermonde convolution for finite graded posets, and a direct method for deriving Regge symmetry formulas for un-normalized Clebsch-Gordan coefficients.

The superspace ring $Ω_n$ is a rank $n$ polynomial ring tensor a rank $n$ exterior algebra. Using an extension of the Vandermonde determinant to $Ω_n$, the authors previously defined a family of doubly graded quotients $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ of $Ω_n$ which carry an action of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ and satisfy a bigraded version of Poincaré Duality. In this paper, we examine the duality modules $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ in greater detail. We describe a monomial basis of $\mathbb{W}_{n,k}$ and give combinatorial formulas for its bigraded Hilbert and Frobenius series. These formulas involve new combinatorial objects called {\em ordered superpartitions}. These are ordered set partitions $(B_1 \mid \cdots \mid B_k)$ of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ in which the non-minimal elements of any block $B_i$ may be barred or unbarred.

In this paper we present a combinatorial proof of Selberg's integral formula. We start by giving a bijective proof of a Theorem about the number of topological orders of a certain related directed graph. Selberg's Integral Formula then follows by induction. This solves a problem posed by R. Stanley in 2008. Our proof is based on Andersons analytic proof of the formula. As part of the proof we show a further generalisation of the generalised Vandermonde determinant.
A positive formula for type $A$ Peterson Schubert calculus

Peterson varieties are special nilpotent Hessenberg varieties that have appeared in the study of quantum cohomology, representation theory, and combinatorics. In type $A$, the Peterson variety $Y$ is a subvariety of the complete flag variety $Fl(n; \mathbb C)$, and is invariant under the action of a subgroup $S\cong \mathbb C^*$ of $T$, where $T$ is the standard (noncompact) torus acting on $Fl(n; \mathbb C)$. Using the Peterson Schubert basis introduced by Harada and Tymoczko obtained by restricting a specific set of Schubert classes from $H_T^*(Fl(n; \mathbb C))$ to $H_S^*(Y)$, we describe the product structure of the equivariant cohomology $H_{S}^*(Y)$. In particular, we show that the product is manifestly positive in an appropriate sense by providing an explicit positive combinatorial formula for its structure constants. Our method requires a new combinatorial identity of binomial coefficients that generalizes Vandermonde's identity.
Scrambled Vandermonde Convolutions of Gaussian Polynomials

It is well known that Gaussian polynomials (i.e., $q$-binomials) describe the distribution of the $area$ statistic on monotone paths in a rectangular grid. We introduce two new statistics, $corners$ and $cindex$; attach ``ornaments'' to the grid; and re-evaluate these statistics, in order to argue that all scrambled versions of the $cindex$ statistic are equidistributed with $area$. Our main result is a representation of the generating function for the bi-statistic $(cindex, corners)$ as a two-variable Vandermonde convolution of the original Gaussian polynomial. The proof relies on explicit bijections between differently ornated paths.
Schur Polynomials through Lindström Gessel Viennot Lemma
In this article, we use Lindström Gessel Viennot Lemma to give a short, combinatorial, visualizable proof of the identity of Schur polynomials -- the sum of monomials of Young tableaux equals to the quotient of determinants. As a by-product, we have a proof of Vandermonde determinant without words. We also prove the cauchy identity. In the remarks, we discuss factorial Schur polynomials, dual Cauchy identity and the relation beteen Newton interpolation formula.
Combinatorial foundations for geometric realizations of subword complexes of Coxeter groups
Multitriangulations, and more generally subword complexes, yield a large family of simplicial complexes that are homeomorphic to spheres. Until now, all attempts to prove or disprove that they can be realized as convex polytopes faced major obstacles. In this article, we lay out the foundations of a framework -- built upon notions from algebraic combinatorics and discrete geometry -- that allows a deeper understanding of geometric realizations of subword complexes of Coxeter groups. Namely, we describe explicitly a family of chirotopes that encapsulate the necessary information to obtain geometric realizations of subword complexes. Further, we show that the space of geometric realizations of this family covers that of subword complexes, making this combinatorially defined family into a natural object to study.
The family of chirotopes is described through certain parameter matrices. That is, given a finite Coxeter group, we present matrices where certain minors have prescribed signs. Parameter matrices are universal: The existence of these matrices combined with conditions in terms of Schur functions is equivalent to the realizability of all subword complexes of this Coxeter group as chirotopes. Finally, parameter matrices provide extensions of combinatorial identities; for instance, the Vandermonde determinant and the dual Cauchy identity are recovered through suitable choices of parameters.

We consider relationships between Vandermonde sets and hyperovals. Hyperovals are Vandermonde sets, but, in general, Vandermonde sets are not hyperovals. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Vandermonde set to be a hyperoval. Therefore, we provide purely algebraic criteria for existence of hyperovals. Furthermore, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of hyperovals in terms of $g$-functions, which can be considered as an analog of Glynn's Theorem for o-polynomials.
