Hook Length Formulas for Trees by Han's Expansion
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently Han obtained a general formula for the weight function corresponding to the expansion of a generating function in terms of hook lengths of binary trees. In this paper, we present formulas for k-ary trees, plane trees, plane forests, labeled trees and forests. We also find appropriate generating functions which lead to unifications of the hook length formulas due to Du and Liu, Han, Gessel and Seo, and Postnikov.

Distinct Matroid Base Weights and Additive Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $M$ be a matroid on a set $E$ and let $w:E\longrightarrow G$ be a weight function, where $G$ is a cyclic group. Assuming that $w(E)$ satisfies the Pollard's Condition (i.e. Every non-zero element of $w(E)-w(E)$ generates $G$), we obtain a formulae for the number of distinct base weights. If $|G|$ is a prime, our result coincides with a result Schrijver and Seymour. We also describe Equality cases in this formulae. In the prime case, our result generalizes Vosper's Theorem.

Jumping sequences
An integer sequence a(n) is called a jump sequence if a(1)=1 and 1<=a(n)<n for n>=2. Such a sequence has the property that a^k(n)=a(a(...(a(n))...)) goes to 1 in finitely many steps and we call the pattern (n,a(n),a^2(n),...,a^k(n)=1) a jumping pattern from n down to 1. In this paper we look at jumping sequences which are weight minimizing with respect to various weight functions (where a weight w(i,j) is given to each jump from j down to i). Our main result is to show that if w(i,j)=(i+j)/i^2 then the cost minimizing jump sequence has the property that the number m satisfies m=a^q(p) for arbitrary q and some p (depending on q) if and only if m is a Pell number.

Splitting Polytopes
A split of a polytope $P$ is a (regular) subdivision with exactly two maximal cells. It turns out that each weight function on the vertices of $P$ admits a unique decomposition as a linear combination of weight functions corresponding to the splits of $P$ (with a split prime remainder). This generalizes a result of Bandelt and Dress [Adv. Math. 92 (1992)] on the decomposition of finite metric spaces. Introducing the concept of compatibility of splits gives rise to a finite simplicial complex associated with any polytope $P$, the split complex of $P$. Complete descriptions of the split complexes of all hypersimplices are obtained. Moreover, it is shown that these complexes arise as subcomplexes of the tropical (pre-)Grassmannians of Speyer and Sturmfels [Adv. Geom. 4 (2004)].

A formula for Plücker coordinates associated with a planar network
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2008) Vol. 2008, article ID rnn081, 19 pages, published on July 24, 2008. • View PublicationBIB
For a planar directed graph G, Postnikov's boundary measurement map sends positive weight functions on the edges of G onto the appropriate totally nonnegative Grassmann cell. We establish an explicit formula for Postnikov's map by expressing each Pluecker coordinate as a ratio of two combinatorially defined polynomials in the edge weights, with positive integer coefficients. In the non-planar setting, we show that a similar formula holds for special choices of Pluecker coordinates.

Cells and Constructible Representations in type B
We examine the partition of a finite Coxeter group of type $B$ into cells determined by a weight function $L$. The main objective of these notes is to reconcile Lusztig's description of constructible representations in this setting with conjectured combinatorial descriptions of cells.

Optimum Branching Problem Revisited
Given a digraph $G = (V_G, A_G)$, a \emph{branching} in $G$ is a set of arcs $B \subseteq A_G$ such that the underlying undirected graph spanned by $B$ is acyclic and each node in $G$ is entered (\emph{covered}) by at most one arc from $B$. Tarjan developed efficient algorithms (based on the cycle contraction technique) for the following problem: given a digraph $G$ with a \emph{weight} function $w \colon A_G \to \R$, find a branching $B$ of the minimum weight $w(B) := \sum_{a \in B} w(a)$ among all branchings with the maximum ardinality $\abs{B}$. We generalize this notion as follows: for a digraph $G$ and a matroid $\calM_V$ on $V_G$, a \emph{matroid branching} in $G$ w.r.t. $\calM_V$ is a branching in $G$ such that the covered set of nodes is independent w.r.t. $\calM_V$. The unweighted (cardinality) problem consists in finding a matroid branching $B$ with $\abs{B}$ maximum. We show that the general cycle contraction approach is applicable to this problem and leads to an efficient algorithm (provided that an oracle is given for testing independence in the matroids arising as the result of the contraction procedure). In the weighted version we are looking for a matroid branching $B$ that minimizes $w(B)$ (for a given weight function $w \colon A_G \to \R$) among all matroid branchings of the maximum cardinality. We show that if $\calM_V$ is a rainbow matroid (that is, nodes of $G$ are marked with colors and it is forbidden to cover more than one node of any color), then there exists an $O(\min(n^2, m \log n))$ method, matching the complexity of Tarjan's algorithm (here $n := \abs{V_G}$, $m := \abs{A_G}$).
Congruences Compatible with the Shuffle Product
Published in Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (2000) 422-431 • Search Publication
This article is devoted to the study of monoids which can be endowed with a shuffle product with coefficients in a semiring. We show that, when the multiplicities do not belong to a ring with prime characteristic, such a monoid is a monoid of traces. When the characteristic is prime, we give a decomposition of the congruences $\equiv$ (or relators $R$) such that $A^*/\_\equiv=< A; R>$ admits a shuffle product. This decomposition involves only addition of primitive elements to the successive quotients. To end with, we study the compatibility with Magnus transformation and examine the case of congruences which are homogeneous for some weight function. The existence of such a weight function is also showed for congruences of depth one.

Negatively correlated random variables and Mason's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Mason's Conjecture asserts that for an $m$--element rank $r$ matroid $\M$ the sequence $(I_k/\binom{m}{k}: 0\leq k\leq r)$ is logarithmically concave, in which $I_k$ is the number of independent $k$--sets of $\M$. A related conjecture in probability theory implies these inequalities provided that the set of independent sets of $\M$ satisfies a strong negative correlation property we call the \emph{Rayleigh condition}. This condition is known to hold for the set of bases of a regular matroid. We show that if $ω$ is a weight function on a set system $\Q$ that satisfies the Rayleigh condition then $\Q$ is a convex delta--matroid and $ω$ is logarithmically submodular. Thus, the hypothesis of the probabilistic conjecture leads inevitably to matroid theory. We also show that two--sums of matroids preserve the Rayleigh condition in four distinct senses, and hence that the Potts model of an iterated two--sum of uniform matroids satisfies the Rayleigh condition. Numerous conjectures and auxiliary results are included.

Elliptic enumeration of nonintersecting lattice paths
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A 114 (3) (2007), 505-521 • View PublicationBIB
We enumerate lattice paths in the planar integer lattice consisting of positively directed unit vertical and horizontal steps with respect to a specific elliptic weight function. The elliptic generating function of paths from a given starting point to a given end point evaluates to an elliptic generalization of the binomial coefficient. Convolution gives an identity equivalent to Frenkel and Turaev's 10-V-9 summation. This appears to be the first combinatorial proof of the latter, and at the same time of some important degenerate cases including Jackson's 8-phi-7 and Dougall's 7-F-6 summation. By considering nonintersecting lattice paths we are led to a multivariate extension of the 10-V-9 summation which turns out to be a special case of an identity originally conjectured by Warnaar, later proved by Rosengren. We conclude with discussing some future perspectives.

Conditions for Weighted Cover Pebbling of Graphs
In a graph G with a distribution of pebbles on its vertices, a pebbling move is the removal of two pebbles from one vertex and the addition of one pebble to an adjacent vertex. A weight function on G is a non-negative integer-valued function on the vertices of G. A distribution of pebbles on G covers a weight function if there exists a sequence of pebbling moves that gives a new distribution in which every vertex has at least as many pebbles as its weight. In this paper we give some necessary and some sufficient conditions for a distribution of pebbles to cover a given weight function on a connected graph G. As a corollary, we give a simple formulation for the `weighted cover pebbling number' of a weight function W and a connected graph G, defined by Crull et al. to be the smallest number m such that any distribution on G of m pebbles is a cover for W. Also, we prove a cover pebbling variant of Graham's Conjecture for pebbling.

Quasiconvex Analysis of Backtracking Algorithms
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a class of multivariate recurrences frequently arising in the worst case analysis of Davis-Putnam-style exponential time backtracking algorithms for NP-hard problems. We describe a technique for proving asymptotic upper bounds on these recurrences, by using a suitable weight function to reduce the problem to that of solving univariate linear recurrences; show how to use quasiconvex programming to determine the weight function yielding the smallest upper bound; and prove that the resulting upper bounds are within a polynomial factor of the true asymptotics of the recurrence. We develop and implement a multiple-gradient descent algorithm for the resulting quasiconvex programs, using a real-number arithmetic package for guaranteed accuracy of the computed worst case time bounds.

Symmetric Functions and B_N-invariant Spherical Harmonics
Published in J.Phys. A: Math. Gen. 35 (2002), 10391-10408 • View PublicationBIB
The wave functions of a quantum isotropic harmonic oscillator in N-space modified by barriers at the coordinate hyperplanes can be expressed in terms of certain generalized spherical harmonics. These are associated with a product-type weight function on the sphere. Their analysis is carried out by means of differential-difference operators. The symmetries of this system involve the Weyl group of type B, generated by permutations and changes of sign of the coordinates. A new basis for symmetric functions as well as an explicit transition matrix to the monomial basis is constructed. This basis leads to a basis for invariant spherical harmonics. The determinant of the Gram matrix for the basis in the natural inner product over the sphere is evaluated, and there is a formula for the evaluation of the basis elements at (1,1,...,1). When the underlying parameter is specialized to zero, the basis consists of ordinary spherical harmonics with cube group symmetry, as used for wave functions of electrons in crystals. The harmonic oscillator can also be considered as a degenerate interaction-free spin Calogero model.

On the eigenvalue estimates for the weighted Laplacian on metric graphs
Published in In the book: INTERNATIONAL MATHEMATICAL SERIES. Nonlinear Problems in Mathematical Physics and Related Topics I. In Honor of Professor Ladyzhenskaya. Kluwer Academic/Plenum Publishers, 2002, p.327 - 348 • View PublicationBIB
Eigenvalue behavior for the equation -λy"=Vu on the edges of a graph G of final total length, with a non-negative weight function V and under the Kirchhoff matching conditions at the vertices and zero boundary condition at at least one point of G, is studied. It is shown that the eigenvalues satisfy an inequality which involves the length |G| and the total mass corresponding to V but otherwise does not depend on the graph. Applications and generalizations of this result are also discussed.

Coherent States from Combinatorial Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct coherent states using sequences of combinatorial numbers such as various binomial and trinomial numbers, and Bell and Catalan numbers. We show that these states satisfy the condition of the resolution of unity in a natural way. In each case the positive weight functions are given as solutions of associated Stieltjes or Hausdorff moment problems, where the moments are the combinatorial numbers.
