Dense circuit graphs and the planar Turán number of a cycle
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $\textit{planar Turán number}$ $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,H)$ of a graph $H$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex planar graph without $H$ as a subgraph. Let $C_k$ denote the cycle of length $k$. The planar Turán number $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_k)$ is known for $k\le 7$. We show that dense planar graphs with a certain connectivity property (known as circuit graphs) contain large near triangulations, and we use this result to obtain consequences for planar Turán numbers. In particular, we prove that there is a constant $D$ so that $\textrm{ex}_{\mathcal P}(n,C_k) \le 3n - 6 - Dn/k^{\log_2^3}$ for all $k, n\ge 4$. When $k \ge 11$ this bound is tight up to the constant $D$ and proves a conjecture of Cranston, Lidický, Liu, and Shantanam.

On the average number of cycles in conjugacy class products
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that for the product of two fixed point free conjugacy classes, the average number of cycles is always very similar. Specifically, our main result is that for a randomly chosen pair of fixed point free permutations of cycle types $α$ and $β$, the average number of cycles in their product is between $H_n-3$ and $H_n+1$, where $H_n$ is the harmonic number.

Generically Stable Measures and Distal Regularity in Continuous Logic
We develop a theory of generically stable and smooth Keisler measures in NIP metric theories, generalizing the case of classical logic. Using smooth extensions, we verify that fundamental properties of (Borel)-definable measures and the Morley product hold in the NIP metric setting. With these results, we prove that as in discrete logic, generic stability can be defined equivalently through definability properties, statistical properties, or behavior under the Morley product. We also examine weakly orthogonal Keisler measures, characterizing weak orthogonality in terms of various analytic regularity properties. We then examine Keisler measures in distal metric theories, proving that as in discrete logic, distality is characterized by all generically stable measures being smooth, or by all pairs of generically stable measures being weakly orthogonal. We then use this, together with our results on weak orthogonality and a cutting lemma, to find analytic versions of distal regularity and the strong Erdős-Hajnal property.

Spherical sets avoiding orthonormal bases
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that there exists an absolute constant $c_0<1$ such that for all $n \ge 2$, any measurable set $A \subset S^{n-1}$ of density at least $c_0$ contains $n$ pairwise orthogonal vectors. The result is sharp up to the value of the constant $c_0$. Moreover, we show that for all $2\le k \le n$ a set $A$ avoiding $k$ pairwise orthogonal vectors has measure at most $\exp(-c_1 \min\{\sqrt{n}, n/k\})$ for some $c_1>0$. Proofs rely on the harmonic analysis on the sphere and the hypercontractive inequality.

Finding cliques and dense subgraphs using edge queries
We consider the problem of finding a large clique in an Erdős--Rényi random graph where we are allowed unbounded computational time but can only query a limited number of edges. Recall that the largest clique in $G \sim G(n,1/2)$ has size roughly $2\log_{2} n$. Let $α_{\star}(δ,\ell)$ be the supremum over $α$ such that there exists an algorithm that makes $n^δ$ queries in total to the adjacency matrix of $G$, in a constant $\ell$ number of rounds, and outputs a clique of size $α\log_{2} n$ with high probability. We give improved upper bounds on $α_{\star}(δ,\ell)$ for every $δ\in [1,2)$ and $\ell \geq 3$. We also study analogous questions for finding subgraphs with density at least $η$ for a given $η$, and prove corresponding impossibility results.

Simplicial pseudohyperplane arrangements give weak Garside groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we connect the language of Bessis's Garisde categories with Salvetti's metrical-hemisphere complexes in order to find new examples of weak Garside groups. As our main example, we show that the fundamental group of the (appropriately defined) complexified complement of a pseudohyperplane arrangement is a weak Garside group. As a consequence of the Folkman-Lawrence topological realization theorem, we also show that fundamental group of the Salvetti complex of a ("simplicial") oriented matroid is a weak Garside group. This provides novel examples of weak Garside groups.

Comparing the sets of volume polynomials and Lorentzian Polynomials
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 35 (2026) 26-39 • View PublicationBIB
Given n convex bodies in the real space of dimension d, we consider the set of homogeneous polynomials of degree d in n variables that can be represented as their volume polynomial. This set is a subset of the set of Lorentzian polynomials. Using our knowledge of operations that preserve the Lorentzian property, we give a complete classification of the cases when the two sets are equal.
Structural convergence and algebraic roots
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 34 (2025) 392-400 • View PublicationBIB
Structural convergence is a framework for convergence of graphs by Nešetřil and Ossona de Mendez that unifies the dense (left) graph convergence and Benjamini-Schramm convergence. They posed a problem asking whether for a given sequence of graphs $(G_n)$ converging to a limit $L$ and a vertex $r$ of $L$ it is possible to find a sequence of vertices $(r_n)$ such that $L$ rooted at $r$ is the limit of the graphs $G_n$ rooted at $r_n$. A counterexample was found by Christofides and Král', but they showed that the statement holds for almost all vertices $r$ of $L$. We offer another perspective to the original problem by considering the size of definable sets to which the root $r$ belongs. We prove that if $r$ is an algebraic vertex (i.e. belongs to a finite definable set), the sequence of roots $(r_n)$ always exists.

Variants of VC dimension and their applications to dynamics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Since its introduction by Vapnik and Chervonenkis in the 1960s, the VC dimension and its variants have played a central role in numerous fields. In this paper, we investigate several variants of the VC dimension and their applications to dynamical systems. First, we prove a new bound for a recently introduced generalization of VC dimension, which unifies and extends various extremal results on the VC, Natarajan, and Steele dimensions. This new bound allows us to strengthen one of the main theorems of Huang and Ye [Adv. Math., 2009] in dynamical systems. Second, we refine a key lemma of Huang and Ye related to a variant of VC dimension by providing a more concise and conceptual proof. We also highlight a surprising connection among this result, combinatorics, dynamical systems, and recent advances in communication complexity.

Using Elementary Techniques to Characterize the Relationship Between Wythoff's Game and the Golden Ratio
Wythoff's game is a modification of the well-known game of ``nim." Wythoff's game, which does not resemble the Fibonacci sequence, has direct relation to the Golden ratio. We will explore the sequence behind this surprising relationship, and consider the implications of our elementary methods.

On some zero-sum invariants for abelian groups of rank three
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be an additive finite abelian group with exponent $\exp(G)$. For $L\subseteq \mathbb N$, let $\mathsf{s}_{L}(G)$ be the smallest integer $\ell$ such that every sequence $S$ over $G$ of length $\ell$ has a zero-sum subsequence $T$ of length $|T|\in L$. In this paper, we consider the invariants $\mathsf{s}_{[1,t]}(G)$ and $\mathsf{s}_{\{k\exp(G)\}}(G)$ (with $k\in \mathbb N$). We obtain precise values as well as upper bounds of the above invariants for some abelian groups of rank three. Some of these results improve previous results of Gao-Thangadurai and Han-Zhang.

Face enumeration for split matroid polytopes
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 34 (2025) 528-544 • View PublicationBIB
This paper initiates the explicit study of face numbers of matroid polytopes and their computation. We prove that, for the large class of split matroid polytopes, their face numbers depend solely on the number of cyclic flats of each rank and size, together with information on the modular pairs of cyclic flats. We provide a formula which allows us to calculate $f$-vectors without the need of taking convex hulls or computing face lattices. We discuss the particular cases of sparse paving matroids and rank two matroids, which are of independent interest due to their appearances in other combinatorial and geometric settings.

Graph multicoloring in solving node malfunction and attacks in a secret-sharing network
We observe a network scenario where parts of a secret are distributed among its nodes. Within the network, a group of attackers is actively trying to obtain the complete secret, while there is also the issue of some nodes malfunctioning or being absent. In this paper, we address this problem by employing graph multicoloring techniques, focusing on the case of a single attacker and varying numbers of malfunctioning nodes.

On forbidding graphs as traces of hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We say that a hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ contains a graph $H$ as a trace if there exists some set $S\subset V(\mathcal{H})$ such that $\mathcal{H}|_S=\{h\cap S: h\in E(\mathcal{H})\}$ contains a subhypergraph isomorphic to $H$. We study the largest number of hyperedges in 3-uniform hypergraphs avoiding some graph $F$ as trace. In particular, we improve a bound given by Luo and Spiro in the case $F=C_4$, and obtain exact bounds for large $n$ when $F$ is a book graph.
Edge-Locating Coloring of Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
An edge-locating coloring of a simple connected graph $G$ is a partition of its edge set into matchings such that the vertices of $G$ are distinguished by the distance to the matchings. The minimum number of the matchings of $G$ that admits an edge-locating coloring is the edge-locating chromatic number of $G$, and denoted by $χ'_L(G)$. In this paper we initiate to introduce the concept of edge-locating coloring and determine the exact values $χ'_L(G)$ of some custom graphs. The graphs $G$ with $χ'_L(G)\in \{2,m\}$ are characterized, where $m$ is the size of $G$. We investigate the relationship between order, diameter, and edge-locating chromatic number of $G$. For a complete graph $K_n$, we obtain the exact values of $χ'_L(K_n)$ and $χ'_L(K_n-M)$, where $M$ is a maximum matching; indeed this result is also extended for any graph. We will determine the edge-locating chromatic number of join graph $G+H$, where $G$ and $H$ are some well-known graphs. In particular, for any graph $G$, we show a relationship between $χ'_L(G+K_1)$ and $Δ(G)$. We investigate the edge-locating chromatic number of trees and present a characterization bound for any tree in terms of maximum degree, number of leaves, and the support vertices of trees. Finally, we prove that any edge-locating coloring of a graph is an edge distinguishing coloring.

Polyhedral approach to weighted connected matchings in general graphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 2024, Volume 359, pp 143-152 (open access) • View PublicationBIB
A connected matching in a graph G consists of a set of pairwise disjoint edges whose covered vertices induce a connected subgraph of G. While finding a connected matching of maximum cardinality is a well-solved problem, it is NP-hard to determine an optimal connected matching in an edge-weighted graph, even in the planar bipartite case. We present two mixed integer programming formulations and a sophisticated branch-and-cut scheme to find weighted connected matchings in general graphs. The formulations explore different polyhedra associated to this problem, including strong valid inequalities both from the matching polytope and from the connected subgraph polytope. We conjecture that one attains a tight approximation of the convex hull of connected matchings using our strongest formulation, and report encouraging computational results over DIMACS Implementation Challenge benchmark instances. The source code of the complete implementation is also made available.

Essential covers of the hypercube require many hyperplanes
Published in Combinator. Probab. Comp. 34 (2025) 326-337 • View PublicationBIB
We prove a new lower bound for the almost 20 year old problem of determining the smallest possible size of an essential cover of the $n$-dimensional hypercube $\{\pm 1\}^n$, i.e. the smallest possible size of a collection of hyperplanes that forms a minimal cover of $\{\pm 1\}^n$ and such that furthermore every variable appears with a non-zero coefficient in at least one of the hyperplane equations. We show that such an essential cover must consist of at least $10^{-2}\cdot n^{2/3}/(\log n)^{2/3}$ hyperplanes, improving previous lower bounds of Linial-Radhakrishnan, of Yehuda-Yehudayoff and of Araujo-Balogh-Mattos.
Graphs with no even holes and no sector wheels are the union of two chordal graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Sivaraman conjectured that if $G$ is a graph with no induced even cycle then there exist sets $X_1, X_2 \subseteq V(G)$ satisfying $V(G) = X_1 \cup X_2$ such that the induced graphs $G[X_1]$ and $G[X_2]$ are both chordal. We prove this conjecture in the special case where $G$ contains no sector wheel, namely, a pair $(H, w)$ where $H$ is an induced cycle of $G$ and $w$ is a vertex in $V(G) \setminus V(H)$ such that $N(w) \cap H$ is either $V(H)$ or a path with at least three vertices.
A new lower bound for doubly metric dimension and related extremal differences
In this paper a new graph invariant based on the minimal hitting set problem is introduced. It is shown that it represents a tight lower bound for the doubly metric dimension of a graph. Exact values of new invariant for paths, stars, complete graphs and complete bipartite graph are obtained. The paper analyzes some tight bounds for the new invariant in general case. Also several extremal differences between some related invariants are determined.
NP-Hardness of Tensor Network Contraction Ordering
We study the optimal order (or sequence) of contracting a tensor network with a minimal computational cost. We conclude 2 different versions of this optimal sequence: that minimize the operation number (OMS) and that minimize the time complexity (CMS). Existing results only shows that OMS is NP-hard, but no conclusion on CMS problem. In this work, we firstly reduce CMS to CMS-0, which is a sub-problem of CMS with no free indices. Then we prove that CMS is easier than OMS, both in general and in tree cases. Last but not least, we prove that CMS is still NP-hard. Based on our results, we have built up relationships of hardness of different tensor network contraction problems.
