In this paper, we consider the moments of statistics on conjugacy classes of the colored permutation groups $\mathfrak{S}_{n,r}=\mathbb{Z}_r\wr \mathfrak{S}_n$. We first show that any fixed moment coincides on all conjugacy classes where all cycles have sufficiently long length. Additionally, for permutation statistics that can be realized via a process we call symmetric extensions, these moments are polynomials in $n$. Finally, for the descent statistic on the hyperoctahedral group $B_n\cong \mathfrak{S}_{n,2}$, we show that its distribution on conjugacy classes without short cycles satisfies a central limit theorem. Our results build on and generalize previous work of Fulman (\textit{J. Comb. Theory Ser. A.}, 1998), Hamaker and Rhoades (arXiv, 2022), and Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Stucky, Sundaram, and Yin (arXiv, 2023). In particular, our techniques utilize the combinatorial framework introduced by Campion Loth, Levet, Liu, Stucky, Sundaram, and Yin.

A map on a surface whose automorphism group has a subgroup acting regularly on its vertices is called a Cayley map. Here we generalize that notion to maniplexes and polytopes. We define $\mathcal{M}$ to be a \emph{Cayley extension} of $\mathcal{K}$ if the facets of $\mathcal{M}$ are isomorphic to $\mathcal{K}$ and if some subgroup of the automorphism group of $\mathcal{M}$ acts regularly on the facets of $\mathcal{M}$. We show that many natural extensions in the literature on maniplexes and polytopes are in fact Cayley extensions. We also describe several universal Cayley extensions. Finally, we examine the automorphism group and symmetry type graph of Cayley extensions.
New classes of groups related to algebraic combinatorics with applications to isomorphism problems
We introduce two refinements of the class of $5/2$-groups, inspired by the classes of automorphism groups of configurations and automorphism groups of unit circulant digraphs. We show that both of these classes have the property that any two regular cyclic subgroups of a group $G$ in either of these classes are conjugate in $G$. This generalizes two results in the literature (and simplifies their proofs) that show that symmetric configurations and unit circulant digraphs are isomorphic if and only if they are isomorphic by a group automorphism of ${\mathbb Z}_n$.
New bounds for covering codes of radius 3 and codimension 3t+1

The smallest possible length of a $q$-ary linear code of covering radius $R$ and codimension (redundancy) $r$ is called the length function and is denoted by $\ell_q(r,R)$. In this work, for $q$ \emph{an arbitrary prime power}, we obtain the following new constructive upper bounds on $\ell_q(3t+1,3)$:
$\ell_q(r,3)\lessapprox \sqrt[3]{k}\cdot q^{(r-3)/3}\cdot\sqrt[3]{\ln q},~r=3t+1, ~t\ge1, ~ q\ge\lceil\mathcal{W}(k)\rceil, 18 <k\le20.339,~\mathcal{W}(k)\text{ is a decreasing function of }k ;$
$\ell_q(r,3)\lessapprox \sqrt[3]{18}\cdot q^{(r-3)/3}\cdot\sqrt[3]{\ln q},~r=3t+1,~t\ge1,~ q\text{ large enough}.$
For $t = 1$, we use a one-to-one correspondence between codes of covering radius 3 and codimension 4, and 2-saturating sets in the projective space $\mathrm{PG}(3,q)$. A new construction providing sets of small size is proposed. The codes, obtained by geometrical methods, are taken as the starting ones in the lift-constructions (so-called ``$q^m$-concatenating constructions'') to obtain infinite families of codes with radius 3 and growing codimension $r = 3t + 1$, $t\ge1$. The new bounds are essentially better than the known ones.

For a fixed nonnegative integer $u$ and positive integer $n$, we investigate the symmetric function \[\sum_{d|n} \left(c_d(\tfrac{n}{d})\right)^u p_d^{\tfrac{n}{d}},\]
where $p_n$ denotes the $n$th power sum symmetric function, and $c_d(r)$ is a Ramanujan sum, equal to the sum of the $r$th powers of all the primitive $d$th roots of unity. We establish the Schur positivity of these functions for $u=0$ and $u=1$, showing that, in each case, the associated representation of the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ decomposes into a sum of Foulkes representations, that is, representations induced from the irreducibles of the cyclic subgroup generated by the long cycle. We also conjecture Schur positivity for the case $u= 2$.
Stretch-width
We introduce a new parameter, called stretch-width, that we show sits strictly between clique-width and twin-width. Unlike the reduced parameters [BKW '22], planar graphs and polynomial subdivisions do not have bounded stretch-width. This leaves open the possibility of efficient algorithms for a broad fragment of problems within Monadic Second-Order (MSO) logic on graphs of bounded stretch-width. In this direction, we prove that graphs of bounded maximum degree and bounded stretch-width have at most logarithmic treewidth. As a consequence, in classes of bounded stretch-width, Maximum Independent Set can be solved in subexponential time $2^{O(n^{4/5} \log n)}$ on $n$-vertex graphs, and, if further the maximum degree is bounded, Existential Counting Modal Logic [Pilipczuk '11] can be model-checked in polynomial time. We also give a polynomial-time $O(\text{OPT}^2)$-approximation for the stretch-width of symmetric $0,1$-matrices or ordered graphs. Somewhat unexpectedly, we prove that exponential subdivisions of bounded-degree graphs have bounded stretch-width. This allows to complement the logarithmic upper bound of treewidth with a matching lower bound. We leave as open the existence of an efficient approximation algorithm for the stretch-width of unordered graphs, if the exponential subdivisions of all graphs have bounded stretch-width, and if graphs of bounded stretch-width have logarithmic clique-width (or rank-width).

The Chen-Lih-Wu Conjecture states that each connected graph with maximum degree $Δ\geq 3$ that is not the complete graph $K_{Δ+1}$ or the complete bipartite graph $K_{Δ,Δ}$ admits an equitable coloring with $Δ$ colors. For planar graphs, the conjecture has been confirmed for $Δ\geq 13$ by Yap and Zhang and for $9\leq Δ\leq 12$ by Nakprasit. In this paper, we present a proof that confirms the conjecture for graphs embeddable into a surface with non-negative Euler characteristic with maximum degree $Δ\geq 9$ and for planar graphs with maximum degree $Δ\geq 8$.

Let $E\subset\mathbb{F}_q^d$ and $\lVert \cdot \rVert:\mathbb{F}_q^d\to \mathbb{F}_q$ defined as $\lVert α\rVert:= α_1^2+\dots+α_d^2$ if $α=(α_1,\dots,α_d)\in \mathbb{F}_q^d$, where $\mathbb{F}_q^d$ is the $d$-dimensional vector space over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with $q$ elements. Let $k\geq 1$ and $A$ is a nonempty subset of $\{(i,j):1\leq i<j\leq k+1\}$. In this paper, we prove that for any nonzero square element $r\in \mathbb{F}_q$ and $\lvert E\rvert\gg_kq^{d/2}$ one can find two $(k+1)$-tuples in $E$ such that one of them is dilated by $r$ with respect to the other only on $|A|$ edges. More precisely, there exist $(x_1,\dots,x_{k+1})\in E^{k+1}$ and $(y_1,\dots,y_{k+1})\in E^{k+1}$ such that $\lVert y_i-y_j\rVert=r\lVert x_i-x_j\rVert$ if $(i,j)\in A$ and $x_i\neq x_j, y_i\neq y_j$ if $1\leq i<j\leq k+1$. In particular, we present two proofs first of which utilizes the machinery of group actions which is typically used to handle problems of this nature, whereas the second one is more combinatorial in nature and is based on the averaging argument. Moreover, we show that in two dimensions the threshold $d/2$ is sharp when $q\equiv 3 \pmod 4$.
As a corollary of this result, varying the underlying set $A$ we obtain thresholds for existence of dilated $k$-paths, $k$-cycles, and $k$-stars $(k\geq 3)$. These results partly generalize some results of the second author.

In 2011, Duncan and Steingrímsson conjectured that modified ascent sequences avoiding any of the patterns 212, 1212, 2132, 2213, 2231 and 2321 are counted by the Bell numbers. Furthermore, the distribution of the number of ascents is the reverse of the distribution of blocks on set partitions. We solve the conjecture for all the patterns except 2321. We describe the corresponding sets of Fishburn permutations by pattern avoidance, and leave some open questions for future work.
The Generalized Combinatorial Lason-Alon-Zippel-Schwartz Nullstellensatz Lemma
We survey a few strengthenings and generalizations of the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz of Alon and the Schwartz-Zippel Lemma. These lemmas guarantee the existence of (a certain number of) nonzeros of a multivariate polynomial when the variables run independently through sufficiently large ranges.
Strongly common graphs with odd girth are cycles
A graph $H$ is called strongly common if for every coloring $φ$ of $K_n$ with two colors, the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ is at least the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ in a random coloring of $K_n$ with the same density of color classes as $φ$. In this note we prove that if a graph has odd girth but is not a cycle, then it is not strongly common. This answers a question of Chen and Ma.
Weak saturation in graphs: a combinatorial approach

The weak saturation number $\mathrm{wsat}(n,F)$ is the minimum number of edges in a graph on $n$ vertices such that all the missing edges can be activated sequentially so that each new edge creates a copy of $F$. A usual approach to prove a lower bound for the weak saturation number is algebraic: if it is possible to embed edges of $K_n$ in a vector space in a certain way (depending on $F$), then the dimension of the subspace spanned by the images of the edges of $K_n$ is a lower bound for the weak saturation number. In this paper, we present a new combinatorial approach to prove lower bounds for weak saturation numbers that allows to establish worst-case tight (up to constant additive terms) general lower bounds as well as to get exact values of the weak saturation numbers for certain graph families. It is known (Alon, 1985) that, for every $F$, there exists $c_F$ such that $\mathrm{wsat}(n,F)=c_Fn(1+o(1))$. Our lower bounds imply that all values in the interval $\left[\fracδ{2}-\frac{1}{δ+1},δ-1\right]$ with step size $\frac{1}{δ+1}$ are achievable by $c_F$ (while any value outside this interval is not achievable).
Reconstructing a set from its subset sums: $2$-torsion-free groups

For a finite multiset $A$ of an abelian group $G$, let $\text{FS}(A)$ denote the multiset of the $2^{|A|}$ subset sums of $A$. It is natural to ask to what extent $A$ can be reconstructed from $\text{FS}(A)$. We fully solve this problem for $2$-torsion-free groups $G$ by giving characterizations, both algebraic and combinatorial, of the fibers of $\text{FS}$. Equivalently, we characterize all pairs of multisets $A,B$ with $\text{FS}(A)=\text{FS}(B)$. Our results build on recent work of Ciprietti and the first author.

Let $p$ be a prime, let $1 \le t < d < p$ be integers, and let $S$ be a non-empty subset of $\mathbb{F}_p$. We establish that if a polynomial $P:\mathbb{F}_p^n \to \mathbb{F}_p$ with degree $d$ is such that the image $P(S^n)$ does not contain the full image $A(\mathbb{F}_p)$ of any non-constant polynomial $A: \mathbb{F}_p \to \mathbb{F}_p$ with degree at most $t$, then $P$ coincides on $S^n$ with a polynomial that in particular has bounded degree-$\lfloor d/(t+1) \rfloor$-rank in the sense of Green and Tao. Similarly, we prove that if the assumption holds even for $t=d$, then $P$ coincides on $S^n$ with a polynomial determined by a bounded number of coordinates.
A uniform approach to the Damiani, Beck, and alternating PBW bases for the positive part of $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$

This paper is about the positive part $U_q^+$ of the $q$-deformed enveloping algebra $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$. The literature contains at least three PBW bases for $U_q^+$, called the Damiani, the Beck, and the alternating PBW bases. These PBW bases are related via exponential formulas. In this paper, we introduce an exponential generating function whose argument is a power series involving the Beck PBW basis and an integer parameter $m$. The cases $m=2$ and $m=-1$ yield the known exponential formulas for the Damiani and alternating PBW bases, respectively. The case $m=1$ appears in the author's previous paper. In the present paper, we give a comprehensive study of the generating function for an arbitrary integer $m$. We have two main results. The first main result gives a factorization of the generating function. In the second main result, we express the coefficients of the generating function in closed form.
Free nilspaces, double-coset nilspaces, and Gowers norms

Compact finite-rank nilspaces have become central in the nilspace approach to higher-order Fourier analysis, notably through their role in a general form of the inverse theorem for the Gowers norms. This paper studies these nilspaces per se, and in connection with further refinements of this inverse theorem that have been conjectured recently. Our first main result states that every compact finite-rank nilspace is obtained by taking a free nilspace (a nilspace based on an abelian group of the form $\mathbb{Z}^{r}\times \mathbb{R}^s$) and quotienting this by a discrete group action of a specific type, describable in terms of polynomials. We call these group actions "higher-order lattice actions", as they generalize actions of lattices in $\mathbb{Z}^r\times \mathbb{R}^s$. The second main result (which relies on the first one) represents every compact finite-rank nilspace as a double-coset space $K\backslash G / Γ$ where $G$ is a nilpotent Lie group of a specific kind. Our third main result extends the aforementioned results to $k$-step compact nilspaces (not necessarily of finite rank), by representing any such nilspace as a quotient of infinite products of free nilspaces and also as double coset spaces $K\backslash G/Γ$ where $G$ is a degree-$k$ nilpotent pro-Lie group. These results open the study of compact nilspaces to areas more classical than nilspace theory, such as the theory of topological group actions. The results also require developing the theory of topological non-compact nilspaces, for which we provide groundwork in this paper. Applications include new inverse theorems for Gowers norms on any finite abelian group. These theorems are purely group theoretic in that the correlating harmonics are based on double-coset spaces. This yields progress towards the Jamneshan-Tao conjecture.
Binomial Cayley Graphs and Applications to Dynamics on Finite Spaces

Binomial Cayley graphs are obtained by considering the binomial coefficient of the weight function of a given Cayley graph and a natural number. We introduce these objects and study two families: one associated with symmetric groups and the other with powers of cyclic groups. We determine various combinatorial properties of these graphs through the spectral analysis of their adjacency matrices. In the case of symmetric groups, we establish a relation between the multiplicity of the null eigenvalue and longest increasing sub-sequences of permutations by means of the RSK correspondence. Finally, we consider dynamical arrangements of finitely many elements in finite spaces, which we refer to as particle-box systems. We apply the results obtained on binomial Cayley graphs in order to describe their degeneracy.
The Asymptotics of the Expected Betti Numbers of Preferential Attachment Clique Complexes

The preferential attachment model is a natural and popular random graph model for a growing network that contains very well-connected ``hubs''. We study the higher-order connectivity of such a network by investigating the topological properties of its clique complex. We concentrate on the expected Betti numbers, a sequence of topological invariants of the complex related to the numbers of holes of different dimensions. We determine the asymptotic growth rates of the expected Betti numbers, and prove that the expected Betti number at dimension 1 grows linearly fast, while those at higher dimensions grow sublinearly fast. Our theoretical results are illustrated by simulations. (Changes are made in this version to generalize Proposition 14 and to streamline proofs. These changes are shown in blue.)
Stirling-Euler-Mahonian Triples of Permutation Statistics

Two well-known distributions in the study of permutation statistics are the Mahonian and Eulerian distributions. Mahonian statistics include the major index MAJ and the number of inversions INV, while examples of Eulerian statistics are the number of descents des and excedances exc. Also of interest are pairs of permutation statistics that have the same joint distribution as (des, MAJ); these are called Euler Mahonian pairs. In this paper we define a Stirling statistic as one that is equidistributed with the number of right-to-left minima rlmin and a Stirling- Euler-Mahonian triple as a triple of statistics with the same trivariate distribution as (rlmin, des, MAJ). We prove that several triples involving well-known statistics are Stirling-Euler-Mahonian. A general bijective technique is demonstrated for any Mahonian statistic that has a permutation code. Finally, we note several properties of Stirling-Euler-Mahonian triples that follow from earlier results.
Perspective on complexity measures targetting read-once branching programs

A model of computation for which reasonable yet still incomplete lower bounds are known is the read-once branching program. Here variants of complexity measures successful in the study of read-once branching programs are defined and studied. Some new or simpler proofs of known bounds are uncovered. Branching program resources and the new measures are compared extensively. The new variants are developed in part in the hope of tackling read-k branching programs for the tree evaluation problem studied in Cook et al. Other computation problems are studied as well. In particular, a common view of a function studied by Gal and a function studied by Bollig and Wegener leads to the general combinatorics of blocking sets. Technical combinatorial results of independent interest are obtained. New leads towards further progress are discussed. An exponential lower bound for non-deterministic read-k branching programs for the GEN function is also derived, independently from the new measures.
