Lattice and Non-lattice Piercing of Axis-Parallel Rectangles
Given a family ${\mathcal F}$ of shapes in the plane, we study what is the lowest possible density of a point set $P$ that pierces (``intersects'', ``hits'') all translates of each shape in ${\mathcal F}$. For instance, if ${\mathcal F}$ consists of two axis-parallel rectangles the best known piercing set, i.e., one with the lowest density, is a lattice. Given a finite family ${\mathcal F}$ of axis-parallel rectangles, we present an algorithm for finding an optimal ${\mathcal F}$-piercing lattice. The algorithm runs in time polynomial in the number of rectangles and the maximum aspect ratio of the rectangles in the family. No prior algorithms for this problem were known. On the other hand, we show that for every $n \geq 3$, there exists a family of $n$ axis-parallel rectangles for which the best piercing density achieved by a lattice is separated by a positive (constant) gap from the optimal piercing density for the respective family. Finally, we show that the best lattice can be sometimes worse by $20\%$ than the optimal piercing set.

On automorphisms of undirected Bruhat graphs
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift, Volume 303 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
The (directed) Bruhat graph $\hatΓ(u,v)$ has the elements of the Bruhat interval $[u,v]$ as vertices, with directed edges given by multiplication by a reflection. Famously, $\hatΓ(e,v)$ is regular if and only if the Schubert variety $X_v$ is smooth, and this condition on $v$ is characterized by pattern avoidance. In this work, we classify when the undirected Bruhat graph $Γ(e,v)$ is vertex-transitive; surprisingly this class of permutations is also characterized by pattern avoidance and sits nicely between the classes of smooth permutations and self-dual permutations. This leads us to a general investigation of automorphisms of $Γ(u,v)$ in the course of which we show that special matchings, which originally appeared in the theory Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials, can be characterized as certain $Γ(u,v)$-automorphisms which are conjecturally sufficient to generate the orbit of $e$ under $Aut(Γ(e,v))$.

Refinement on spectral Turán's theorem
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 37 (4) (2023) 2462-2485 • View Publication • BIB
A well-known result in extremal spectral graph theory, due to Nosal and Nikiforov, states that if $G$ is a triangle-free graph on $n$ vertices, then $λ(G) \le λ(K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor, \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil })$, equality holds if and only if $G=K_{\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor, \lceil \frac{n}{2} \rceil }$. Nikiforov [Linear Algebra Appl. 427 (2007)] extended this result to $K_{r+1}$-free graphs for every integer $r\ge 2$. This is known as the spectral Turán theorem. Recently, Lin, Ning and Wu [Combin. Probab. Comput. 30 (2021)] proved a refinement on this result for non-bipartite triangle-free graphs. In this paper, we provide alternative proofs for the result of Nikiforov and the result of Lin, Ning and Wu. Our proof can allow us to extend the later result to non-$r$-partite $K_{r+1}$-free graphs. Our result refines the theorem of Nikiforov and it also can be viewed as a spectral version of a theorem of Brouwer.

Noncolliding Macdonald Walks with an Absorbing Wall
Published in SIGMA 18 (2022), 079, 21 pages • View Publication • BIB
The branching rule is one of the most fundamental properties of the Macdonald symmetric polynomials. It expresses a Macdonald polynomial as a nonnegative linear combination of Macdonald polynomials with smaller number of variables. Taking a limit of the branching rule under the principal specialization when the number of variables goes to infinity, we obtain a Markov chain of $m$ noncolliding particles with negative drift and an absorbing wall at zero. The chain depends on the Macdonald parameters $(q,t)$ and may be viewed as a discrete deformation of the Dyson Brownian motion. The trajectory of the Markov chain is equivalent to a certain Gibbs ensemble of plane partitions with an arbitrary cascade front wall. In the Jack limit $t=q^{β/2}\to 1$ the absorbing wall disappears, and the Macdonald noncolliding walks turn into the $β$-noncolliding random walks studied by Huang [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2021 (2021), 5898-5942, arXiv:1708.07115]. Taking $q=0$ (Hall-Littlewood degeneration) and further sending $t\to 1$, we obtain a continuous time particle system on $\mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0}$ with inhomogeneous jump rates and absorbing wall at zero.
New classification of graphs in view of the domination number of central graphs
For a graph $G$, the central graph $C(G)$ is the graph constructed from $G$ by subdividing each edge of $G$ with one vertex and also by adding an edge to every pair of non-adjacent vertices in $G$. Also for a graph $G$, let $γ(G)$ and $τ(G)$ be the domination number of $G$ and the minimum cardinarity of a vertex cover of $G$, respectively. In this paper, we give a new classification of graphs concerning the domination number of central graphs and minimum vertex covers of graphs. Namely, we show that any graph $G$ with at least three vertices can be classified into one of the two classes of graphs with $γ(C(G))=τ(G)$ and $γ(C(G))=τ(G)+1$, respectively, together with some special properties concerning a vertex cover of $G$. We also give some new results on the domination number of central graphs.

Bottom complexes
The bottom complex of a finite polyhedal pointed rational cone is the lattice polytopal complex of the compact faces of the convex hull of nonzero lattice points in the cone. The algebra, associated to the bottom complex of a cone, defines a flat deformation of the affine toric variety, associated to the polyhedral cone, set-theoretically. We describe three explicit infinite families of abstract polytopal complexes, defining such flat deformations scheme-theoretically.

On generalisations of the Aharoni-Pouzet base exchange theorem
The Greene-Magnanti theorem states that if $ M $ is a finite matroid, $ B_0 $ and $ B_1 $ are bases and $ B_0=\bigcup_{i=1}^{n} X_i $ is a partition, then there is a partition $ B_1=\bigcup_{i=1}^{n}Y_i $ such that $ (B_0 \setminus X_i) \cup Y_i $ is a base for every $ i $. The special case where each $ X_i $ is a singleton can be rephrased as the existence of a perfect matching in the base transition graph. Pouzet conjectured that this remains true in infinite dimensional vector spaces. Later he and Aharoni answered this conjecture affirmatively not just for vector spaces but for infinite matroids. We prove two generalisations of their result. On the one hand, we show that `being a singleton' can be relaxed to `being finite' and this is sharp in the sense the exclusion of infinite sets is really necessary. On the other hand, we prove that if $ B_0$ and $ B_1 $ are bases, then there is a bijection $ F $ between their finite subsets such that $ (B_0\setminus I) \cup F(I) $ is a base for every $ I$. In contrast to the approach of Aharoni and Pouzet, our proofs are completely elementary, they do not rely on infinite matching theory.

Partitions for stratified sampling
Classical jittered sampling partitions $[0,1]^d$ into $m^d$ cubes for a positive integer $m$ and randomly places a point inside each of them, providing a point set of size $N=m^d$ with small discrepancy. The aim of this note is to provide a construction of partitions that works for arbitrary $N$ and improves straight-forward constructions. We show how to construct equivolume partitions of the $d$-dimensional unit cube with hyperplanes that are orthogonal to the main diagonal of the cube. We investigate the discrepancy of such point sets and optimise the expected discrepancy numerically by relaxing the equivolume constraint using different black-box optimisation techniques.

Non-Geometric Cospectral Mates of Line Graphs with a Linear Representation
Published • View Publication • BIB
For an incidence geometry $\mathcal{G} = (\mathcal{P}, \mathcal{L}, \text{I})$ with a linear representation $\mathcal{T}_n^*(\mathcal{K})$, we apply WQH switching to construct a non-geometric graph $Γ'$ cospectral with the line graph $Γ$ of $\mathcal{G}$. As an application, we show that for $h \geq 2$ and $0 < m < h$, there are strongly regular graphs with parameters $(v, k, λ, μ) = (2^{2h} (2^{m+h}+2^m-2^h), 2^h (2^h+1)(2^m-1), 2^h (2^{m+1}-3), 2^h (2^m-1))$ which are not point graphs of partial geometries of order $(s,t,α) = ((2^h+1)(2^m-1), 2^h-1, 2^m-1)$.

Approximate Sampling of Graphs with Near-$P$-stable Degree Intervals
Published in Ann. Comb. (2023) • View Publication • BIB
The approximate uniform sampling of graph realizations with a given degree sequence is an everyday task in several social science, computer science, engineering etc. projects. One approach is using Markov chains. The best available current result about the well-studied switch Markov chain is that it is rapidly mixing on P-stable degree sequences (see DOI:10.1016/j.ejc.2021.103421). The switch Markov chain does not change any degree sequence. However, there are cases where degree intervals are specified rather than a single degree sequence. (A natural scenario where this problem arises is in hypothesis testing on social networks that are only partially observed.) Rechner, Strowick, and Müller-Hannemann introduced in 2018 the notion of degree interval Markov chain which uses three (separately well-studied) local operations (switch, hinge-flip and toggle), and employing on degree sequence realizations where any two sequences under scrutiny have very small coordinate-wise distance. Recently Amanatidis and Kleer published a beautiful paper (arXiv:2110.09068), showing that the degree interval Markov chain is rapidly mixing if the sequences are coming from a system of very thin intervals which are centered not far from a regular degree sequence. In this paper we extend substantially their result, showing that the degree interval Markov chain is rapidly mixing if the intervals are centred at P-stable degree sequences.

Inductive Freeness of Ziegler's Canonical Multiderivations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\mathcal A$ be a free hyperplane arrangement. In 1989, Ziegler showed that the restriction $\mathcal A''$ of $\mathcal A$ to any hyperplane endowed with the natural multiplicity $κ$ is then a free multiarrangement $(\mathcal A'',κ)$. The aim of this paper is to prove an analogue of Ziegler's theorem for the stronger notion of inductive freeness: if $\mathcal A$ is inductively free, then so is the multiarrangement $(\mathcal A'',κ)$. In a related result we derive that if a deletion $\mathcal A'$ of $\mathcal A$ is free and the corresponding restriction $\mathcal A''$ is inductively free, then so is $(\mathcal A'',κ)$ -- irrespective of the freeness of $\mathcal A$. In addition, we show counterparts of the latter kind for additive and recursive freeness.

A random Hall-Paige conjecture
A complete mapping of a group $G$ is a bijection $φ\colon G\to G$ such that $x\mapsto xφ(x)$ is also bijective. Hall and Paige conjectured in 1955 that a finite group $G$ has a complete mapping whenever $\prod_{x\in G} x$ is the identity in the abelianization of $G$. This was confirmed in 2009 by Wilcox, Evans, and Bray with a proof using the classification of finite simple groups. \par In this paper, we give a combinatorial proof of a far-reaching generalisation of the Hall-Paige conjecture for large groups. We show that for random-like and equal-sized subsets $A,B,C$ of a group $G$, there exists a bijection $φ\colon A\to B$ such that $x\mapsto xφ(x)$ is a bijection from $A$ to $C$ whenever $\prod_{a\in A} a \prod_{b\in B} b=\prod_{c\in C} c$ in the abelianization of $G$. We use this statement as a black-box to settle the following old problems in combinatorial group theory for large groups. (1) We characterise sequenceable groups, that is, groups which admit a permutation $π$ of their elements such that the partial products $π_1$, $π_1π_2$, $π_1π_2\cdots π_n$ are all distinct. This resolves a problem of Gordon from 1961 and confirms conjectures made by several authors, including Keedwell's 1981 conjecture that all large non-abelian groups are sequenceable. We also characterise the related $R$-sequenceable groups, addressing a problem of Ringel from 1974. (2) We confirm in a strong form a conjecture of Snevily from 1999 by characterising large subsquares of multiplication tables of finite groups that admit transversals. Previously, this characterisation was known only for abelian groups of odd order (by a combination of papers by Alon and Dasgupta-Károlyi-Serra-Szegedy and Arsovski).

Sharp inequalities for discrete and continuous multi-tiling, using the Bombieri-Siegel approach
Given a finite subset $F$ of integer points in $\mathbb Z^d$, it is of interest to seek conditions on $F$ that allow it to multi-tile $\mathbb Z^d$ by translations. To this end, we give a discretized version of the Bombieri-Siegel formula, which represents a finite sum of discrete covariograms in terms of Fourier transforms. As a consequence, we arrive at a new equivalent condition for multi-tiling $\mathbb Z^d$ by translating $F$ with a fixed integer sublattice. In the continuous case, we study lattice sums of the cross covariogram for any two bounded sets $A, B\subset \mathbb R^d$, and we prove a refined continuous version of the classical Bombieri-Siegel formula from the geometry of numbers. To achieve this goal, we use a variant of the Poisson Summation formula, adapted for continuous functions of compact support. As an application of this refined Bombieri-Siegel formula, a new characterization of multi-tilings of Euclidean space by translations of a compact set by using a lattice is given. One consequence is a novel spectral formula for the volume of any bounded measurable set. Another consequence is a novel spectral formula for the product of the volumes of any two bounded measurable sets.

Coloring ($P_5$, kite)-free graphs
Let $P_n$ and $K_n$ denote the induced path and complete graph on $n$ vertices, respectively. The {\em kite} is the graph obtained from a $P_4$ by adding a vertex and making it adjacent to all vertices in the $P_4$ except one vertex with degree 1. A graph is ($P_5$, kite)-free if it has no induced subgraph isomorphic to a $P_5$ or a kite. For a graph $G$, the chromatic number of $G$ (denoted by $χ(G)$) is the minimum number of colors needed to color the vertices of $G$ such that no two adjacent vertices receive the same color, and the clique number of $G$ is the size of a largest clique in $G$. Here, we are interested in the class of ($P_5$, kite)-free graphs with small clique number. It is known that every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_3$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 3$, every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_4$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 4$, and that every ($P_5$,~kite, $K_5$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 6$. In this paper, we showed the following: $\bullet$ Every ($P_5$, kite, $K_6$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 7$. $\bullet$ Every ($P_5$, kite, $K_7$)-free graph $G$ satisfies $χ(G)\leq 9$. We also give examples to show that the above bounds are tight.

Quantum State Transfer on Neighborhood Corona of Two Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two graphs $G_{1}$ of order $n_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, the neighborhood corona of $G_{1}$ and $G_{2}$, denoted by $G_{1}\bigstar G_{2}$, is the graph obtained by taking one copy of $G_{1}$ and taking $n_{1}$ copies of $G_{2}$, in the meanwhile, linking all the neighbors of the $i$-th vertex of $G_{1}$ with all vertices of the $i$-th copy of $G_{2}$. In our work, we give some conditions that $G_{1}\bigstar G_{2}$ is not periodic. Furthermore, we demonstrate some sufficient conditions for $G_{1}\bigstar G_{2}$ having no perfect state transfer. Some examples are provided to explain our results. In addition, for the reason that the graph admitting perfect state transfer is rare, we also consider pretty good state transfer on neighborhood corona of two graphs. We show some sufficient conditions for $G_{1}\bigstar G_{2}$ admitting pretty good state transfer.

Rainbow clique subdivisions

We show that for any integer $t \ge 2$, every properly edge colored $n$-vertex graph with average degree at least $(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ contains a rainbow subdivision of a complete graph of size $t$. Note that this bound is within $(\log n)^{1+o(1)}$ factor of the lower bound. This also implies a result on the rainbow Turán number of cycles.

MAT-free graphic arrangements and a characterization of strongly chordal graphs by edge-labeling
Published • View Publication • BIB
Ideal subarrangements of a Weyl arrangement are proved to be free by the multiple addition theorem (MAT) due to Abe-Barakat-Cuntz-Hoge-Terao (2016). They form a significant class among Weyl subarrangements that are known to be free so far. The concept of MAT-free arrangements was introduced recently by Cuntz-M{ü}cksch (2020) to capture a core of the MAT, which enlarges the ideal subarrangements from the perspective of freeness. The aim of this paper is to give a precise characterization of the MAT-freeness in the case of type $A$ Weyl subarrangements (or graphic arrangements). It is known that the ideal and free graphic arrangements correspond to the unit interval and chordal graphs respectively. We prove that a graphic arrangement is MAT-free if and only if the underlying graph is strongly chordal. In particular, it affirmatively answers a question of Cuntz-M{ü}cksch that MAT-freeness is closed under taking localization in the case of graphic arrangements.
