Excluding a Planar Matching Minor in Bipartite Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Matching minors are a specialisation of minors fit for the study of graph with perfect matchings. The notion of matching minors has been used to give a structural description of bipartite graphs on which the number of perfect matchings can becomputed efficiently, based on a result of Little, by McCuaig et al. in 1999.In this paper we generalise basic ideas from the graph minor series by Robertson and Seymour to the setting of bipartite graphs with perfect matchings. We introducea version of Erdos-Posa property for matching minors and find a direct link between this property and planarity. From this, it follows that a class of bipartite graphs withperfect matchings has bounded perfect matching width if and only if it excludes aplanar matching minor. We also present algorithms for bipartite graphs of bounded perfect matching width for a matching version of the disjoint paths problem, matching minor containment, and for counting the number of perfect matchings. From our structural results, we obtain that recognising whether a bipartite graphGcontains afixed planar graphHas a matching minor, and that counting the number of perfect matchings of a bipartite graph that excludes a fixed planar graph as a matching minor are both polynomial time solvable.
Identities and bases in the sylvester and Baxter monoids
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper presents new results on the identities satisfied by the sylvester and Baxter monoids. We show how to embed these monoids, of any rank strictly greater than 2, into a direct product of copies of the corresponding monoid of rank 2. This confirms that all monoids of the same family, of rank greater than or equal to 2, satisfy exactly the same identities. We then give a complete characterization of those identities, and prove that the varieties generated by the sylvester and the Baxter monoids have finite axiomatic rank, by giving a finite basis for them.

Insertion in constructed normal numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
Defined by Borel, a real number is normal to an integer base $b$, greater than or equal to $2$, if in its base-$b$ expansion every block of digits occurs with the same limiting frequency as every other block of the same length. We consider the problem of insertion in constructed base-$b$ normal expansions to obtain normality to base $(b+1)$.

On the Cogirth of Binary Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
The cogirth, $g^\ast(M)$, of a matroid $M$ is the size of a smallest cocircuit of $M$. Finding the cogirth of a graphic matroid can be done in polynomial time, but Vardy showed in 1997 that it is NP-hard to find the cogirth of a binary matroid. In this paper, we show that $g^\ast(M)\leq \frac{1}{2}\vert E(M)\vert$ when $M$ is binary, unless $M$ simplifies to a projective geometry. We also show that, when equality holds, $M$ simplifies to a Bose-Burton geometry, that is, a matroid of the form $PG(r-1,2)-PG(k-1,2)$. These results extend to matroids representable over arbitrary finite fields.

List-decoding and list-recovery of Reed-Solomon codes beyond the Johnson radius for any rate
Published • View Publication • BIB
Understanding the limits of list-decoding and list-recovery of Reed-Solomon (RS) codes is of prime interest in coding theory and has attracted a lot of attention in recent decades. However, the best possible parameters for these problems are still unknown, and in this paper, we take a step in this direction. We show the existence of RS codes that are list-decodable or list-recoverable beyond the Johnson radius for \emph{any} rate, with a polynomial field size in the block length. In particular, we show that for any $ε\in (0,1)$ there exist RS codes that are list-decodable from radius $1-ε$ and rate less than $\fracε{2-ε}$, with constant list size. We deduce our results by extending and strengthening a recent result of Ferber, Kwan, and Sauermann on puncturing codes with large minimum distance and by utilizing the underlying code's linearity.
Towards Lower Bounds on the Depth of ReLU Neural Networks
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 2023 37:2, 997-1029 • View Publication • BIB
We contribute to a better understanding of the class of functions that can be represented by a neural network with ReLU activations and a given architecture. Using techniques from mixed-integer optimization, polyhedral theory, and tropical geometry, we provide a mathematical counterbalance to the universal approximation theorems which suggest that a single hidden layer is sufficient for learning any function. In particular, we investigate whether the class of exactly representable functions strictly increases by adding more layers (with no restrictions on size). As a by-product of our investigations, we settle an old conjecture about piecewise linear functions by Wang and Sun (2005) in the affirmative. We also present upper bounds on the sizes of neural networks required to represent functions with logarithmic depth.

3-facial edge-coloring of plane graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An $\ell$-facial edge-coloring of a plane graph is a coloring of its edges such that any two edges at distance at most $\ell$ on a boundary walk of any face receive distinct colors. It is the edge-coloring variant of the $\ell$-facial vertex coloring, which arose as a generalization of the well-known cyclic coloring. It is conjectured that at most $3\ell + 1$ colors suffice for an $\ell$-facial edge-coloring of any plane graph. The conjecture has only been confirmed for $\ell \le 2$, and in this paper, we prove its validity for $\ell = 3$.
Component behaviour and excess of random bipartite graphs near the critical point
Published • View Publication • BIB
The binomial random bipartite graph $G(n,n,p)$ is the random graph formed by taking two partition classes of size $n$ and including each edge between them independently with probability $p$. It is known that this model exhibits a similar phase transition as that of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ as $p$ passes the critical point of $\frac{1}{n}$. We study the component structure of this model near to the critical point. We show that, as with $G(n,p)$, for an appropriate range of $p$ there is a unique `giant' component and we determine asymptotically its order and excess. We also give more precise results for the distribution of the number of components of a fixed order in this range of $p$. These results rely on new bounds for the number of bipartite graphs with a fixed number of vertices and edges, which we also derive.

Significant contribution to the Frankl's union-closed conjecture
A celebrated unresolved conjecture of Peter Frankl states that every finite union-closed collection of sets ($B$), with non-empty universe, admits an abundant element. The best result in the literature states that if $|B|=n$, then there exists $x$ in the universe of $B$ with frequency at least $$\frac{n-1}{\log_2n}.$$ But $(n-1)/(n\log_2n)\rightarrow 0$ as $n\rightarrow \infty$.\\ In this paper, we show that there exists a constant $g>0$ such that for every $B$; there exists $x\in \texttt{U}(B)$ such that $$|B_x|\geq g|B|$$ where $B_x=\{A\in B: x\in A\}$ and $$\texttt{U}(B)=\bigcup_{A\in B}A.$$
Small complete caps in ${\rm PG}(4n + 1, q)$
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we prove the existence of a complete cap of ${\rm PG}(4n+1, q)$ of size $2(q^{2n+1}-1)/(q-1)$, for each prime power $q>2$. It is obtained by projecting two disjoint Veronese varieties of ${\rm PG}(2n^2+3n, q)$ from a suitable $(2n^2-n-2)$-dimensional projective space. This shows that the trivial lower bound for the size of the smallest complete cap of ${\rm PG}(4n+1, q)$ is essentially sharp.

Asymmetric All-or-nothing Transforms
In this paper, we initiate a study of asymmetric all-or-nothing transforms (or asymmetric AONTs). A (symmetric) $t$-all-or-nothing transform is a bijective mapping defined on the set of $s$-tuples over a specified finite alphabet. It is required that knowledge of all but $t$ outputs leaves any $t$ inputs completely undetermined. There have been numerous papers developing the theory of AONTs as well as presenting various applications of AONTs in cryptography and information security. In this paper, we replace the parameter $t$ by two parameters $t_o$ and $t_i$, where $t_i \leq t_o$. The requirement is that knowledge of all but $t_o$ outputs leaves any $t_i$ inputs completely undetermined. When $t_i < t_o$, we refer to the AONT as asymmetric. We give several constructions and bounds for various classes of asymmetric AONTs, especially those with $t_i = 1$ or $t_i = 2$. We pay particular attention to linear transforms, where the alphabet is a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ and the mapping is linear.

Towards the 0-statement of the Kohayakawa-Kreuter conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we study asymmetric Ramsey properties of the random graph $G_{n,p}$. Let $r \in \mathbb{N}$ and $H_1, \ldots, H_r$ be graphs. We write $G_{n,p} \to (H_1, \ldots, H_r)$ to denote the property that whenever we colour the edges of $G_{n,p}$ with colours from the set $[r] := \{1, \ldots, r\}$ there exists $i \in [r]$ and a copy of $H_i$ in $G_{n,p}$ monochromatic in colour $i$. There has been much interest in determining the asymptotic threshold function for this property. Rödl and Ruciński determined the threshold function for the general symmetric case; that is, when $H_1 = \cdots = H_r$. A conjecture of Kohayakawa and Kreuter, if true, would fully resolve the asymmetric problem. Recently, the 1-statement of this conjecture was confirmed by Mousset, Nenadov and Samotij. Building on work of Marciniszyn, Skokan, Spöhel and Steger, we reduce the 0-statement of Kohayakawa and Kreuter's conjecture to a certain deterministic subproblem. To demonstrate the potential of this approach, we show this subproblem can be resolved for almost all pairs of regular graphs. This therefore resolves the 0-statement for all such pairs of graphs.

Polynomial Matrices, Splitting Subspaces and Krylov Subspaces over Finite Fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $T$ be a linear operator on an $\mathbb{F}_q$-vector space $V$ of dimension $n$. For any divisor $m$ of $n$, an $m$-dimensional subspace $W$ of $V$ is $T$-splitting if $$ V =W\oplus TW\oplus \cdots \oplus T^{d-1}W, $$ where $d=n/m$. Let $σ(m,d;T)$ denote the number of $m$-dimensional $T$-splitting subspaces. Determining $σ(m,d;T)$ for an arbitrary operator $T$ is an open problem. This problem is closely related to another open problem on Krylov spaces. We discuss this connection and give explicit formulae for $σ(m,d;T)$ in the case where the invariant factors of $T$ satisfy certain degree conditions. A connection with another enumeration problem on polynomial matrices is also discussed.

Extending higher Bruhat orders to non-longest words in $S_n$
In this paper, we extend Manin and Schechtman's higher Bruhat orders for the symmetric group to higher Bruhat orders for non-longest words $w$ in $S_n$. We prove that the higher Bruhat orders of non-longest words are ranked posets with unique minimal and maximal elements. As in Manin and Schechtman's original paper, the $k$-th Bruhat order for $w$ is created out of equivalence classes of maximal chains in its $(k-1)$-st Bruhat order. We also define the second and third Bruhat orders for arbitrary realizable k-sets, and prove that the second Bruhat order has a unique minimal and maximal element. Lastly, we also outline how this extension may guide future research into developing higher Bruhat orders for affine type A Weyl groups.

The upper logarithmic density of monochromatic subset sums
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that in any two-coloring of the positive integers there is a color for which the set of positive integers that can be represented as a sum of distinct elements with this color has upper logarithmic density at least $(2+\sqrt{3})/4$ and this is best possible. This answers a forty-year-old question of Erdős.

The free $m$-cone of a matroid and its $\mathcal{G}$-invariant
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2022 • View Publication • BIB
For a matroid $M$, its configuration determines its $\mathcal{G}$-invariant. Few examples are known of pairs of matroids with the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant but different configurations. In order to produce new examples, we introduce the free $m$-cone $Q_m(M)$ of a loopless matroid $M$, where $m$ is a positive integer. We show that the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant of $M$ determines the $\mathcal{G}$-invariant of $Q_m(M)$, and that the configuration of $Q_m(M)$ determines $M$; so if $M$ and $N$ are nonisomorphic and have the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant, then $Q_m(M)$ and $Q_m(N)$ have the same $\mathcal{G}$-invariant but different configurations. We prove analogous results for several variants of the free $m$-cone. We also define a new matroid invariant of $M$, and show that it determines the Tutte polynomial of $Q_m(M)$.
Approximate polymorphisms
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a function $g\colon\{0,1\}^m\to\{0,1\}$, a function $f\colon \{0,1\}^n\to\{0,1\}$ is called a $g$-polymorphism if their actions commute: $f(g(\mathsf{row}_1(Z)),\ldots,g(\mathsf{row}_n(Z))) = g(f(\mathsf{col}_1(Z)),\ldots,f(\mathsf{col}_m(Z)))$ for all $Z\in\{0,1\}^{n\times m}$. The function $f$ is called an approximate polymorphism if this equality holds with probability close to $1$, when $Z$ is sampled uniformly. We study the structure of exact polymorphisms as well as approximate polymorphisms. Our results include: - We prove that an approximate polymorphism $f$ must be close to an exact polymorphism; - We give a characterization of exact polymorphisms, showing that besides trivial cases, only the functions $g = \mathsf{AND}, \mathsf{XOR}, \mathsf{OR}, \mathsf{NXOR}$ admit non-trivial exact polymorphisms. We also study the approximate polymorphism problem in the list-decoding regime (i.e., when the probability equality holds is not close to $1$, but is bounded away from some value). We show that if $f(x \land y) = f(x) \land f(y)$ with probability larger than $s_\land \approx 0.815$ then $f$ correlates with some low-degree character, and $s_\land$ is the optimal threshold for this property. Our result generalize the classical linearity testing result of Blum, Luby and Rubinfeld, that in this language showed that the approximate polymorphisms of $g = \mathsf{XOR}$ are close to XOR's, as well as a recent result of Filmus, Lifshitz, Minzer and Mossel, showing that the approximate polymorphisms of AND can only be close to AND functions.

On the Number of Edges of the Frechet Mean and Median Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The availability of large datasets composed of graphs creates an unprecedented need to invent novel tools in statistical learning for graph-valued random variables. To characterize the average of a sample of graphs, one can compute the sample Frechet mean and median graphs. In this paper, we address the following foundational question: does a mean or median graph inherit the structural properties of the graphs in the sample? An important graph property is the edge density; we establish that edge density is an hereditary property, which can be transmitted from a graph sample to its sample Frechet mean or median graphs, irrespective of the method used to estimate the mean or the median. Because of the prominence of the Frechet mean in graph-valued machine learning, this novel theoretical result has some significant practical consequences.
Permutation-generated maps between Dyck paths
In 2003, Deutsch and Elizalde defined a family of bijective maps between the set of Dyck paths to itself which is induced by some particular permutations. In this paper, we extend the construction of the maps by allowing the permutation to be arbitrary. We characterise the permutations which generate the same map and find all permutations generating a bijection among Dyck paths. Consequently, we give a new combinatorial interpretation of the quantity $(2n-1)!!$ as well as some new statistics of Dyck paths which are equidistributed to some known height statistics via our generalised maps.
