Unavoidable Induced Subgraphs of Large 2-Connected Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Ramsey proved that for every positive integer $n$, every sufficiently large graph contains an induced $K_n$ or $\overline{K}_n$. Among the many extensions of Ramsey's Theorem there is an analogue for connected graphs: for every positive integer $n$, every sufficiently large connected graph contains an induced $K_n$, $K_{1,n}$, or $P_n$. In this paper, we establish an analogue for 2-connected graphs. In particular, we prove that for every integer exceeding two, every sufficiently large 2-connected graph contains one of the following as an induced subgraph: $K_n$, a subdivision of $K_{2,n}$, a subdivision of $K_{2,n}$ with an edge between the two vertices of degree $n$, and a well-defined structure similar to a ladder.

Few distance sets in $\ell_p$ spaces and $\ell_p$ product spaces
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 102 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
Kusner asked if $n+1$ points is the maximum number of points in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that the $\ell_p$ distance $(1<p<\infty)$ between any two points is $1$. We present an improvement to the best known upper bound when $p$ is large in terms of $n$, as well as a generalization of the bound to $s$-distance sets. We also study equilateral sets in the $\ell_p$ sums of Euclidean spaces, deriving upper bounds on the size of an equilateral set for when $p=\infty$, $p$ is even, and for any $1\le p<\infty$.

Published • View Publication • BIB
We determine Turán numbers for the family of 3-uniform minimal paths of length four \emph{for all $n$}. We also establish the second and third order Turán numbers and use them to compute the corresponding Ramsey numbers for up to four colors.

Reconstruction of a coloring from its homogeneous sets
We study a reconstruction problem for colorings. Given a finite or countable set $X$, a coloring on $X$ is a function $\varphi: [X]^{2}\to \{0,1\}$, where $[X]^{2}$ is the collection of all 2-elements subsets of $X$. A set $H\subseteq X$ is homogeneous for $\varphi$ when $\varphi$ is constant on $[H]^2$. Let $hom(\varphi)$ be the collection of all homogeneous sets for $\varphi$. The coloring $1-\varphi$ is called the complement of $\varphi$. We say that $\varphi$ is {\em reconstructible} up to complementation from its homogeneous sets, if for any coloring $ψ$ on $X$ such that $hom(\varphi)=hom(ψ)$ we have that either $ψ=\varphi$ or $ψ=1-\varphi$. We present several conditions for reconstructibility and non reconstructibility. We show that there is a Borel way to reconstruct a coloring from its homogeneous sets.

A refinement of the binomial distribution using the quantum binomial theorem
Published in Communications in Statistics, Theory and Methods 52 (2023) 294--308 • View Publication • BIB
$q$-analogs of special functions, including hypergeometric functions, play a central role in mathematics and have numerous applications in physics. In the theory of probability, $q$-analogs of various probability distributions have been introduced over the years, including the binomial distribution. Here, I propose a new refinement of the binomial distribution by way of the quantum binomial theorem (also known as the the noncommutative $q$-binomial theorem), where the $q$ is a formal variable in which information related to the sequence of successes and failures in the underlying binomial experiment is encoded in its exponent.
Extra-fine sheaves and interaction decompositions
We introduce an original notion of extra-fine sheaf on a topological space, and a variant (hyper-extra-fine) for which Čech cohomology in strictly positive degree vanishes. We provide a characterization of such sheaves when the topological space is a partially ordered set (poset) equipped with the Alexandrov topology. Then we further specialize our results to some sheaves of vector spaces and injective maps, where extra-fineness is (essentially) equivalent to the decomposition of the sheaf into a direct sum of subfunctors, known as interaction decomposition, and can be expressed by a sum-intersection condition. We use these results to compute the dimension of the space of global sections when the presheaves are freely generated over a functor of sets, generalizing classical counting formulae for the number of solutions of the linearized marginal problem (Kellerer and Matúš). We finish with a comparison theorem between the Čech cohomology associated to a covering and the topos cohomology of the poset with coefficients in the presheaf, which is also the cohomology of a cosimplicial local system over the nerve of the poset. For that, we give a detailed treatment of cosimplicial local systems on simplicial sets. The appendixes present presheaves, sheaves and Čech cohomology, and their application to the marginal problem.
Generalizing Kirchhoff laws for Signed Graphs
Kirchhoff-type Laws for signed graphs are characterized by generalizing transpedances through the incidence-oriented structure of bidirected graphs. The classical $2$-arborescence interpretation of Tutte is shown to be equivalent to single-element Boolean classes of reduced incidence-based cycle covers, called contributors. A generalized contributor-transpedance is introduced using entire Boolean classes that naturally cancel in a graph; classical conservation is proven to be property of the trivial Boolean classes. The contributor-transpedances on signed graphs are shown to produce non-conservative Kirchhoff-type Laws, where every contributor possesses the unique source-sink path property. Finally, the maximum value of a contributor-transpedance is calculated through the signless Laplacian.

An Asymptotic Expansion for the Number of 2-Connected Chord Diagrams
Published • View Publication • BIB
We derive a functional relation between the generating functions of connected chord diagrams and 2-connected chord diagrams. This relation enables us to calculate an asymptotic expansion for the number of 2-connected chord diagrams on $n$ chords. The asymptotic information obtained from this expansion refines the last established results and provides a simple alternative for calculating the asymptotic behaviour of certain Green functions in Quenched QED and Yukawa theory in the context of quantum field theory.

Problems and results in Extremal Combinatorics -- IV
Extremal Combinatorics is among the most active topics in Discrete Mathematics, dealing with problems that are often motivated by questions in other areas, including Theoretical Computer Science and Information Theory. This paper contains a collection of problems and results in the area, including solutions or partial solutions to open problems suggested by various researchers. The topics considered here include questions in Extremal Graph Theory, Coding Theory and Social Choice. This is by no means a comprehensive survey of the area, and is merely a collection of problems, results and proofs, which are hopefully interesting. As the title of the paper suggests, this is a sequel of three previous papers of the same flavour. Each section of this paper is essentially self contained, and can be read separately.

Modifying a Graph's Degree Sequence and the Testablity of Degree Sequence Properties
We show that if the degree sequence of a graph $G$ is close in $\ell_1$-distance to a given realizable degree sequence $(d_1,\dots,d_n)$, then $G$ is close in edit distance to a graph with degree sequence $(d_1,\dots,d_n)$. We then use this result to prove that every graph property defined in terms of the degree sequence is testable in the dense graph model with query complexity independent of $n$.

Cut Bounds for Some Weighted Graphs
In communication field, an important issue is to group users and base stations to as many as possible subnetworks satisfying certain interference constraints. These problems are usually formulated as a graph partition problems which minimize some forms of graph cut. Previous research already gave some results about the cut bounds for unweighted regular graph. In this paper, we prove a result about the lower bound for weighted graphs that have some regular properties and show similar results for more general case.

Expansion in Matrix-Weighted Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A matrix-weighted graph is an undirected graph with a $k\times k$ positive semidefinite matrix assigned to each edge. There are natural generalizations of the Laplacian and adjacency matrices for such graphs. These matrices can be used to define and control expansion for matrix-weighted graphs. In particular, an analogue of the expander mixing lemma and one half of a Cheeger-type inequality hold for matrix-weighted graphs. A new definition of a matrix-weighted expander graph suggests the tantalizing possibility of families of matrix-weighted graphs with better-than-Ramanujan expansion.

An improved lower bound on multicolor Ramsey numbers

A recent breakthrough of Conlon and Ferber yielded an exponential improvement on the lower bounds for multicolor diagonal Ramsey numbers. In this note, we modify their construction and obtain improved bounds for more than three colors.
On the signed chromatic number of some classes of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A signed graph $(G, σ)$ is a graph $G$ along with a function $σ: E(G) \to \{+,-\}$. A closed walk of a signed graph is positive (resp., negative) if it has an even (resp., odd) number of negative edges, counting repetitions. A homomorphism of a (simple) signed graph to another signed graph is a vertex-mapping that preserves adjacencies and signs of closed walks. The signed chromatic number of a signed graph $(G, σ)$ is the minimum number of vertices $|V(H)|$ of a signed graph $(H, π)$ to which $(G, σ)$ admits a homomorphism.Homomorphisms of signed graphs have been attracting growing attention in the last decades, especially due to their strong connections to the theories of graph coloring and graph minors. These homomorphisms have been particularly studied through the scope of the signed chromatic number. In this work, we provide new results and bounds on the signed chromatic number of several families of signed graphs (planar graphs, triangle-free planar graphs, $K_n$-minor-free graphs, and bounded-degree graphs).

A conjecture on different central parts of binary trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Ω_n$ be the family of binary trees on $n$ vertices obtained by identifying the root of an rgood binary tree with a vertex of maximum eccentricity of a binary caterpillar. In the paper titled "On different middle parts of a tree (The electronic journal of combinatorics, 25 (2018), no. 3, paper 3.17, 32 pp)", Smith et al. conjectured that among all binary trees on $n$ vertices the pairwise distance between any two of center, centroid and subtree core is maximized by some member of the family $Ω_n$. We first obtain the rooted binary tree which minimizes the number of root containing subtrees and then prove this conjecture. We also obtain the binary trees which maximize these distances.
Computing the covering radius of a polytope with an application to lonely runners
Published in Combinatorica, Vol. 42, Issue 4, 463-490 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We are concerned with the computational problem of determining the covering radius of a rational polytope. This parameter is defined as the minimal dilation factor that is needed for the lattice translates of the correspondingly dilated polytope to cover the whole space. As our main result, we describe a new algorithm for this problem, which is simpler, more efficient and easier to implement than the only prior algorithm of Kannan (1992). Motivated by a variant of the famous Lonely Runner Conjecture, we use its geometric interpretation in terms of covering radii of zonotopes, and apply our algorithm to prove the first open case of three runners with individual starting points.
Planar lattice subsets with minimal vertex boundary
Published • View Publication • BIB
A subset of vertices of a graph is minimal if, within all subsets of the same size, its vertex boundary is minimal. We give a complete, geometric characterization of minimal sets for the planar integer lattice X. Our characterization elucidates the structure of all minimal sets, and we are able to use it to obtain several applications. We characterize uniquely minimal sets of X: those which are congruent to any other minimal set of the same size. We also classify all efficient sets of X: those that have maximal size amongst all such sets with a fixed vertex boundary. We define and investigate the graph G of minimal sets whose vertices are congruence classes of minimal sets of X and whose edges connect vertices which can be represented by minimal sets that differ by exactly one vertex. We prove that G has exactly one infinite component, has infinitely many isolated vertices and has bounded components of arbitrarily large size. Finally, we show that all minimal sets, except one, are connected.
The birth of the strong components
Published • View Publication • BIB
Random directed graphs $D(n,p)$ undergo a phase transition around the point $p = 1/n$, and the width of the transition window has been known since the works of Luczak and Seierstad. They have established that as $n \to \infty$ when $p = (1 + μn^{-1/3})/n$, the asymptotic probability that the strongly connected components of a random directed graph are only cycles and single vertices decreases from 1 to 0 as $μ$ goes from $-\infty$ to $\infty$. By using techniques from analytic combinatorics, we establish the exact limiting value of this probability as a function of $μ$ and provide more properties of the structure of a random digraph around, below and above its transition point. We obtain the limiting probability that a random digraph is acyclic and the probability that it has one strongly connected complex component with a given difference between the number of edges and vertices (called excess). Our result can be extended to the case of several complex components with given excesses as well in the whole range of sparse digraphs. Our study is based on a general symbolic method which can deal with a great variety of possible digraph families, and a version of the saddle point method which can be systematically applied to the complex contour integrals appearing from the symbolic method. While the technically easiest model is the model of random multidigraphs, in which multiple edges are allowed, and where edge multiplicities are sampled independently according to a Poisson distribution with a fixed parameter $p$, we also show how to systematically approach the family of simple digraphs, where multiple edges are forbidden, and where 2-cycles are either allowed or not. Our theoretical predictions are supported by numerical simulations, and we provide tables of numerical values for the integrals of Airy functions that appear in this study.

Topology of Clique Complexes of Line Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The clique complex of a graph G is a simplicial complex whose simplices are all the cliques of G, and the line graph L(G) of G is a graph whose vertices are the edges of G and the edges of L(G) are incident edges of G. In this article, we determine the homotopy type of the clique complexes of line graphs for several classes of graphs including triangle-free graphs, chordal graphs, complete multipartite graphs, wheel-free graphs, and 4-regular circulant graphs. We also give a closed form formula for the homotopy type of these complexes in several cases.

On boundary correlations in planar Ashkin-Teller models
Published • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the switching lemma of Griffiths, Hurst and Sherman to the random current representation of the Ashkin-Teller model. We then use it together with properties of two-dimensional topology to derive linear relations for multi-point boundary spin correlations and bulk order-disorder correlations in planar models. We also show that the same linear relations are satisfied by products of Pfaffians. As a result a clear picture arises in the noninteracting case of two independent Ising models where multi-point correlation functions are given by Pfaffians and determinants of their respective two-point functions. This gives a unified treatment of both the classical Pfaffian identities and recent total positivity inequalities for boundary spin correlations in the planar Ising model. We also derive the Simon and Gaussian inequality for general Ashkin-Teller models with negative four-body coupling constants.
