A Tight Bound for Conflict-free Coloring in terms of Distance to Cluster
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given an undirected graph $G = (V,E)$, a conflict-free coloring with respect to open neighborhoods (CFON coloring) is a vertex coloring such that every vertex has a uniquely colored vertex in its open neighborhood. The minimum number of colors required for such a coloring is the CFON chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $χ_{ON}(G)$. In previous work [WG 2020], we showed the upper bound $χ_{ON}(G) \leq dc(G) + 3$, where $dc(G)$ denotes the distance to cluster parameter of $G$. In this paper, we obtain the improved upper bound of $χ_{ON}(G) \leq dc(G) + 1$. We also exhibit a family of graphs for which $χ_{ON}(G) > dc(G)$, thereby demonstrating that our upper bound is tight.

Polynomials that vanish to high order on most of the hypercube
Published • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by higher vanishing multiplicity generalizations of Alon's Combinatorial Nullstellensatz and its applications, we study the following problem: for fixed $k\geq 1$ and $n$ large with respect to $k$, what is the minimum possible degree of a polynomial $P\in \mathbb{R}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ with $P(0,\dots,0)\neq 0$ such that $P$ has zeroes of multiplicity at least $k$ at all points in $\{0,1\}^n\setminus \{(0,\dots,0)\}$? For $k=1$, a classical theorem of Alon and Füredi states that the minimum possible degree of such a polynomial equals $n$. In this paper, we solve the problem for all $k\geq 2$, proving that the answer is $n+2k-3$. As an application, we improve a result of Clifton and Huang on configurations of hyperplanes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that each point in $\{0,1\}^n\setminus \{(0,\dots,0)\}$ is covered by at least $k$ hyperplanes, but the point $(0,\dots,0)$ is uncovered. Surprisingly, the proof of our result involves Catalan numbers and arguments from enumerative combinatorics.

On the size of $A+λA$ for algebraic $λ$
Published in Moscow J. Comb. Number Th. 12 (2023) 117-126 • View Publication • BIB
For a finite set $A\subset \mathbb{R}$ and real $λ$, let $A+λA:=\{a+λb :\, a,b\in A\}$. Combining a structural theorem of Freiman on sets with small doubling constants together with a discrete analogue of Prékopa--Leindler inequality we prove a lower bound $|A+\sqrt{2} A|\geq (1+\sqrt{2})^2|A|-O({|A|}^{1-\varepsilon})$ which is essentially tight. We also formulate a conjecture about the value of $\liminf |A+λA|/|A|$ for an arbitrary algebraic $λ$. Finally, we prove a tight lower bound on the Lebesgue measure of $K+\mathcal{T} K$ for a given linear operator $\mathcal{T}\in \operatorname{End}(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and a compact set $K\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ with fixed measure. This continuous result supports the conjecture and yields an upper bound in it.
Novel Results of Two Generalized Classes of Fibonacci and Lucas Polynomials and Their Uses in the Reduction of Some Radicals
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper is concerned with developing some new connection formulae between two generalized classes of Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials. All the connection coefficients involve hypergeometric functions of the type $_2F_{1}(z)$, for certain $z$. Several new connection formulae between some famous polynomials such as Fibonacci, Lucas, Pell, Fermat, Pell-Lucas, and Fermat-Lucas polynomials are deduced as special cases of the derived connection formulae. Some of the introduced formulae generalize some of those existing in the literature. As two applications of the derived connection formulae, some new formulae linking some celebrated numbers are given and also some newly closed formulae of certain definite weighted integrals are deduced. Based on using the two generalized classes of Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials, some new reduction formulae of certain odd and even radicals are developed.
Extended chromatic symmetric functions and equality of ribbon Schur functions
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 128 29pp (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We prove a general inclusion-exclusion relation for the extended chromatic symmetric function of a weighted graph, which specializes to (extended) $k$-deletion, and we give two methods to obtain numerous new bases from weighted graphs for the algebra of symmetric functions. Moreover, we classify when two weighted paths have equal extended chromatic symmetric functions by proving this is equivalent to the classification of equal ribbon Schur functions. This latter classification is dependent on the operation composition of compositions, which we generalize to composition of graphs. We then apply our generalization to obtain infinitely many families of weighted graphs whose members have equal extended chromatic symmetric functions.
Mixed Cages: monotony, connectivity and upper bounds
Published • View Publication • BIB
A \emph{$[z, r; g]$-mixed cage} is a mixed graph $z$-regular by arcs, $r$-regular by edges, with girth $g$ and minimum order. %In this paper we study structural properties of mixed cages: Let $n[z,r;g]$ denote the order of a $[z,r;g]$-mixed cage. In this paper we prove that $n[z,r;g]$ is a monotonicity function, with respect of $g$, for $z\in \{1,2\}$, and we use it to prove that the underlying graph of a $[z,r;g]$-mixed cage is 2-connected, for $z\in \{1,2\}$. We also prove that $[z,r;g]$-mixed cages are strong connected. We present bounds of $n[z,r;g]$ and constructions of $[z,r;5]$-mixed graphs and show a $[10,3;5]$-mixed cage of order $50$.

The Primitive Derivation and Discrete Integrals
Published in SIGMA 17 (2021), 038, 9 pages • View Publication • BIB
The modules of logarithmic derivations for the (extended) Catalan and Shi arrangements associated with root systems are known to be free. However, except for a few cases, explicit bases for such modules are not known. In this paper, we construct explicit bases for type $A$ root systems. Our construction is based on Bandlow-Musiker's integral formula for a basis of the space of quasiinvariants. The integral formula can be considered as an expression for the inverse of the primitive derivation introduced by K. Saito. We prove that the discrete analogues of the integral formulas provide bases for Catalan and Shi arrangements.

A novel method for inference of chemical compounds with prescribed topological substructures based on integer programming
Published • View Publication • BIB
Analysis of chemical graphs is becoming a major research topic in computational molecular biology due to its potential applications to drug design. One of the major approaches in such a study is inverse quantitative structure activity/property relationships (inverse QSAR/QSPR) analysis, which is to infer chemical structures from given chemical activities/properties. Recently, a novel framework has been proposed for inverse QSAR/QSPR using both artificial neural networks (ANN) and mixed integer linear programming (MILP). This method consists of a prediction phase and an inverse prediction phase. In the first phase, a feature vector $f(G)$ of a chemical graph $G$ is introduced and a prediction function $ψ_{\mathcal{N}}$ on a chemical property $π$ is constructed with an ANN $\mathcal{N}$. In the second phase, given a target value $y^*$ of the chemical property $π$, a feature vector $x^*$ is inferred by solving an MILP formulated from the trained ANN $\mathcal{N}$ so that $ψ_{\mathcal{N}}(x^*)$ is equal to $y^*$ and then a set of chemical structures $G^*$ such that $f(G^*)= x^*$ is enumerated by a graph enumeration algorithm. The framework has been applied to chemical compounds with a rather abstract topological structure such as acyclic or monocyclic graphs and graphs with a specified polymer topology with cycle index up to 2. In this paper, we propose a new flexible modeling method to the framework so that we can specify a topological substructure of graphs and a partial assignment of chemical elements and bond-multiplicity to a target graph.

The star-structure connectivity and star-substructure connectivity of hypercubes and folded hypercubes
Published in The Computer Journal 2021 • View Publication • BIB
As a generalization of vertex connectivity, for connected graphs $G$ and $T$, the $T$-structure connectivity $κ(G, T)$ (resp. $T$-substructure connectivity $κ^{s}(G, T)$) of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of a set of subgraphs $F$ of $G$ that each is isomorphic to $T$ (resp. to a connected subgraph of $T$) so that $G-F$ is disconnected. For $n$-dimensional hypercube $Q_{n}$, Lin et al. [6] showed $κ(Q_{n},K_{1,1})=κ^{s}(Q_{n},K_{1,1})=n-1$ and $κ(Q_{n},K_{1,r})=κ^{s}(Q_{n},K_{1,r})=\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil$ for $2\leq r\leq 3$ and $n\geq 3$. Sabir et al. [11] obtained that $κ(Q_{n},K_{1,4})=κ^{s}(Q_{n},K_{1,4})=\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil$ for $n\geq 6$, and for $n$-dimensional folded hypercube $FQ_{n}$, $κ(FQ_{n},K_{1,1})=κ^{s}(FQ_{n},K_{1,1})=n$, $κ(FQ_{n},K_{1,r})=κ^{s}(FQ_{n},K_{1,r})=\lceil\frac{n+1}{2}\rceil$ with $2\leq r\leq 3$ and $n\geq 7$. They proposed an open problem of determining $K_{1,r}$-structure connectivity of $Q_n$ and $FQ_n$ for general $r$. In this paper, we obtain that for each integer $r\geq 2$, $κ(Q_{n};K_{1,r})=κ^{s}(Q_{n};K_{1,r})=\lceil\frac{n}{2}\rceil$ and $κ(FQ_{n};K_{1,r})=κ^{s}(FQ_{n};K_{1,r})= \lceil\frac{n+1}{2}\rceil$ for all integers $n$ larger than $r$ in quare scale. For $4\leq r\leq 6$, we separately confirm the above result holds for $Q_n$ in the remaining cases.

Normalized Laplacians for Gain Graphs
Published in American Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 1 (2022), Pages 20-39. Link: https://ajcombinatorics.org/articles.html • View Publication • BIB
We propose the notion of normalized Laplacian matrix $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ for a gain graphs and study its properties in detail, providing insights and counterexamples along the way. We establish bounds for the eigenvalues of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ and characterize the classes of graphs for which equality holds. The relationships between the balancedness, bipartiteness, and their connection to the spectrum of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$ are also studied. Besides, we extend the edge version of eigenvalue interlacing for the gain graphs. Thereupon, we determine the coefficients for the characteristic polynomial of $\mathcal{L}(Φ)$.
Isocanted alcoved polytopes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Through tropical normal idempotent matrices, we introduce isocanted alcoved polytopes, computing their $f$--vectors and checking the validity of the following five conjectures: Bárány, unimodality, $3^d$, flag and cubical lower bound (CLBC). Isocanted alcoved polytopes are centrally symmetric, almost simple cubical polytopes. They are zonotopes. We show that, for each dimension, there is a unique combinatorial type. In dimension $d$, an isocanted alcoved polytope has $2^{d+1}-2$ vertices, its face lattice is the lattice of proper subsets of $[d+1]$ and its diameter is $d+1$. They are realizations of $d$--elementary cubical polytopes. The $f$--vector of a $d$--dimensional isocanted alcoved polytope attains its maximum at the integer $\lfloor d/3\rfloor$.

Flip actions and Gelfand pairs for affine Weyl groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
Several combinatorial actions of the affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ on triangulations, trees, words and permutations are compared. Addressing a question of David Vogan, we show that, modulo a natural involution, these permutation representations are multiplicity-free. The proof uses a general construction of Gelfand subgroups in the affine Weyl groups of types $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ and $\widetilde{B}_n$.

Paths with many shortcuts in tournaments
Published • View Publication • BIB
A shortcut of a directed path $v_1 v_2 \cdots v_n$ is an edge $v_iv_j$ with $j > i+1$. If $j = i+2$ the shortcut is called a hop. If all hops are present, the path is called hop complete, so the path and its hops form a square of a path. We prove that every tournament with $n \ge 4$ vertices has a Hamiltonian path with at least $(4n-10)/7$ hops, and has a hop complete path of order at least $n^{0.295}$. A spanning binary tree of a tournament is a spanning shortcut tree if for every vertex of the tree, all its left descendants are in-neighbors and all its right descendants are out-neighbors. It is well-known that every tournament contains a spanning shortcut tree. The number of shortcuts of a shortcut tree is the number of shortcuts of its unique induced Hamiltonian path. Let $t(n)$ denote the largest integer such that every tournament with $n$ vertices has a spanning shortcut tree with at least $t(n)$ shortcuts. We almost determine the asymptotic growth of $t(n)$ as it is proved that $Θ(n\log^2n) \ge t(n)-\frac{1}{2}\binom{n}{2} \ge Θ(n \log n)$.

Intermediate symplectic characters and shifted plane partitions of shifted double staircase shape
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use intermediate symplectic characters to give a proof and variations of Hopkins' conjecture, now proved by Hopkins and Lai, on the number of shifted plane partitions of shifted double staircase shape with bounded entries. In fact, we prove some character identities involving intermediate symplectic characters, and find generating functions for such shifted plane partitions. The key ingredients of the proof are a bialternant formula for intermediate symplectic characters, which interpolates between those for Schur functions and symplectic characters, and the Ishikawa-Wakayama minor-summation formula.
Zero-sum cycles in flexible polyhedra
Published in Bulletin of the London Mathematical Society (2022). 54(1):112-125 • View Publication • BIB
We show that if a polyhedron in the three-dimensional affine space with triangular faces is flexible, i.e., can be continuously deformed preserving the shape of its faces, then there is a cycle of edges whose lengths sum up to zero once suitably weighted by 1 and -1. We do this via elementary combinatorial considerations, made possible by a well-known compactification of the three-dimensional affine space as a quadric in the four-dimensional projective space. The compactification is related to the Euclidean metric, and allows us to use a simple degeneration technique that reduces the problem to its one-dimensional analogue, which is trivial to solve.

Pipe dreams for Schubert polynomials of the classical groups
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 107 (2023) 103613 • View Publication • BIB
Schubert polynomials for the classical groups were defined by S.Billey and M.Haiman in 1995; they are polynomial representatives of Schubert classes in a full flag variety of a classical group. We provide a combinatorial description for these polynomials, as well as their double versions, by introducing analogues of pipe dreams, or RC-graphs, for the Weyl groups of the classical types.

Riordan Groups in higher Dimensions
The classical Riordan groups associated to a given commutative ring are groups of infinite matrices (called Riordan arrays) associated to pairs of formal power series in one variable. The Fundamental Theorem of Riordan Arrays relates matrix multiplication to two group actions on such series, namely formal (convolution) multiplication and formal composition. We define the analogous Riordan groups involving formal power series in several variables, and establish the analogue of the Fundamental Theorem in that context. We discuss related groups of Laurent series and pose some questions.

A complete multipartite basis for the chromatic symmetric function
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 35, Issue 4, November 2021, 2647-2661 • View Publication • BIB
In the vector space of symmetric functions, the elements of the basis of elementary symmetric functions are (up to a factor) the chromatic symmetric functions of disjoint unions of cliques. We consider their graph complements, the functions $\{r_λ: λ\text{ an integer partition}\}$ defined as chromatic symmetric functions of complete multipartite graphs. This basis was first introduced by Penaguiao [21]. We provide a combinatorial interpretation for the coefficients of the change-of-basis formula between the $r_λ$ and the monomial symmetric functions, and we show that the coefficients of the chromatic and Tutte symmetric functions of a graph $G$ when expanded in the $r$-basis enumerate certain intersections of partitions of $V(G)$ into stable sets.

Congruence Normality of Simplicial Hyperplane Arrangements via Oriented Matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
A catalogue of simplicial hyperplane arrangements was first given by Grünbaum in 1971. These arrangements naturally generalize finite Coxeter arrangements and the weak order through the poset of regions. For simplicial arrangements, posets of regions are in fact lattices. We update Grünbaum's catalogue, providing normals and invariants for all known sporadic simplicial arrangements with up to 37 lines. The weak order is known to be congruence normal, and congruence normality for simplicial arrangements can be determined using polyhedral cones called shards. In this article, we provide additional structure to the catalogue of simplicial hyperplane arrangements by determining which arrangements always/sometimes/never lead to congruence normal lattices of regions. To this end, we use oriented matroids to recast shards as covectors to determine congruence normality of large hyperplane arrangements. As a consequence of this approach we derive in particular which lattices of regions of sporadic simplicial arrangements of rank 3 are always congruence normal. We also show that lattices of regions from finite Weyl groupoids of any rank are congruence normal.
