We study the following problem: for given integers $d,k$ and graph $G$, can we obtain a graph with diameter $d$ via at most $k$ edge deletions ? We determine the computational complexity of this and related problems for different values of $d$.
Exact hyperplane covers for subsets of the hypercube

Alon and Füredi (1993) showed that the number of hyperplanes required to cover $\{0,1\}^n\setminus \{0\}$ without covering $0$ is $n$. We initiate the study of such exact hyperplane covers of the hypercube for other subsets of the hypercube. In particular, we provide exact solutions for covering $\{0,1\}^n$ while missing up to four points and give asymptotic bounds in the general case. Several interesting questions are left open.
Injective edge-coloring of graphs with given maximum degree

A coloring of edges of a graph $G$ is injective if for any two distinct edges $e_1$ and $e_2$, the colors of $e_1$ and $e_2$ are distinct if they are at distance $1$ in $G$ or in a common triangle. Naturally, the injective chromatic index of $G$, $χ'_{inj}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors needed for an injective edge-coloring of $G$. We study how large can be the injective chromatic index of $G$ in terms of maximum degree of $G$ when we have restrictions on girth and/or chromatic number of $G$. We also compare our bounds with analogous bounds on the strong chromatic index.
Characters and chromatic symmetric functions

Let $P$ be a poset, $inc(P)$ its incomparability graph, and $X_{inc(P)}$ the corresponding chromatic symmetric function, as defined by Stanley in {\em Adv. Math.}, {\bf 111} (1995) pp.~166--194. Certain conditions on $P$ imply that the expansions of $X_{inc(P)}$ in standard symmetric function bases yield coefficients which have simple combinatorial interpretations. By expressing these coefficients as character evaluations, we extend several of these interpretations to {\em all} posets $P$. Consequences include new combinatorial interpretations of the permanent and other immanants of totally nonnegative matrices, and of the sum of elementary coefficients in the Shareshian-Wachs chromatic quasisymmetric function $X_{inc(P),q}$ when $P$ is a unit interval order.

Mass partition problems describe the partitions we can induce on a family of measures or finite sets of points in Euclidean spaces by dividing the ambient space into pieces. In this survey we describe recent progress in the area in addition to its connections to topology, discrete geometry, and computer science.
The intersection spectrum of 3-chromatic intersecting hypergraphs
For a hypergraph $H$, define its intersection spectrum $I(H)$ as the set of all intersection sizes $|E\cap F|$ of distinct edges $E,F\in E(H)$. In their seminal paper from 1973 which introduced the local lemma, Erdős and Lovász asked: how large must the intersection spectrum of a $k$-uniform $3$-chromatic intersecting hypergraph be? They showed that such a hypergraph must have at least three intersection sizes, and conjectured that the size of the intersection spectrum tends to infinity with $k$. Despite the problem being reiterated several times over the years by Erdős and other researchers, the lower bound of three intersection sizes has remarkably withstood any improvement until now. In this paper, we prove the Erdős-Lovász conjecture in a strong form by showing that there are at least $k^{1/2-o(1)}$ intersection sizes. Our proof consists of a delicate interplay between Ramsey type arguments and a density increment approach.
Ball packings for links

The ball number of a link $L$, denoted by $ball(L)$, is the minimum number of solid balls (not necessarily of the same size) needed to realize a necklace representing $L$. In this paper, we show that $ball(L)\leq 5 cr(L)$ where $cr(L)$ denotes the crossing number of $L$. To this end, we use Lorentz geometry applied to ball packings. The well-known Koebe-Andreev-Thurston circle packing Theorem is also an important brick for the proof. Our approach yields to an algorithm to construct explicitly the desired necklace representation of $L$ in the 3-dimensional space.
Grundy domination and zero forcing in regular graphs
Given a finite graph $G$, the maximum length of a sequence $(v_1,\ldots,v_k)$ of vertices in $G$ such that each $v_i$ dominates a vertex that is not dominated by any vertex in $\{v_1,\ldots,v_{i-1}\}$ is called the Grundy domination number, $γ_{\rm gr}(G)$, of $G$. A small modification of the definition yields the Z-Grundy domination number, which is the dual invariant of the well-known zero forcing number. In this paper, we prove that $γ_{\rm gr}(G) \geq \frac{n + \lceil \frac{k}{2} \rceil - 2}{k-1}$ holds for every connected $k$-regular graph of order $n$ different from $K_{k+1}$ and $\bar{2C_4}$. The bound in the case $k=3$ reduces to $γ_{\rm gr}(G) \geq \frac{n}{2}$, and we characterize the connected cubic graphs with $γ_{\rm gr}(G)=\frac{n}{2}$. If $G$ is different from $K_4$ and $K_{3,3}$, then $\frac{n}{2}$ is also an upper bound for the zero forcing number of a connected cubic graph, and we characterize the connected cubic graphs attaining this bound.

Matrix Schubert varieties are the closures of the orbits of $B\times B$ acting on all $n\times n$ matrices, where $B$ is the group of invertible lower triangular matrices. Extending work of Fulton, Knutson and Miller identified a Gröbner basis for the prime ideals of these varieties. They also showed that the corresponding initial ideals are Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes, and derived a related primary decomposition in terms of reduced pipe dreams. These results lead to a geometric proof of the Billey-Jockusch-Stanley formula for a Schubert polynomial, among many other applications. We define skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties to be the nonempty intersections of matrix Schubert varieties with the subspace of skew-symmetric matrices. In analogy with Knutson and Miller's work, we describe a natural generating set for the prime ideals of these varieties. We then compute a related Gröbner basis. Using these results, we identify a primary decomposition for the corresponding initial ideals involving certain fpf-involution pipe dreams. We show that these initial ideals are likewise the Stanley-Reisner ideals of shellable simplicial complexes. As an application, we give a geometric proof of an explicit generating function for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials. Our methods differ from Knutson and Miller's and can be used to give new proofs of some of their results, as we explain at the end of this article.
Upper Tails of Subgraph Counts in Sparse Regular Graphs
What is the probability that a sparse $n$-vertex random $d$-regular graph $G_n^d$, $n^{1-c}<d=o(n)$ contains many more copies of a fixed graph $K$ than expected? We determine the behavior of this upper tail to within a logarithmic gap in the exponent. For most graphs $K$ (for instance, for any $K$ of average degree greater than $4$) we determine the upper tail up to a $1+o(1)$ factor in the exponent. However, we also provide an example of a graph, given by adding an edge to $K_{2,4}$, where the upper tail probability behaves differently from previously studied behavior in both the sparse random regular and sparse Erdős-Rényi models in this sparsity regime.
Zero $A$-paths and the Erdős-Pósa property
Let $Γ$ be an Abelian group. In this paper I characterize the $A$-paths of weight $0\inΓ$ that have the Erdős-Pósa property. Using this in an auxiliary graph, one can also easily characterize the $A$-paths of weight $γ\inΓ$ that have the Erdős-Pósa property. These results also extend to long paths, that is paths of some minimum length.
A structural result on zero walls with non-zero linkages will be proven as a means to prove the main result of this paper. This immediately implies that zero cycles with respect to an Abelian group $Γ$ have the Erdős-Pósa property.
Hypergraph regularity and higher arity VC-dimension
We generalize the fact that graphs with small VC-dimension can be approximated by rectangles, showing that hypergraphs with small VC_k-dimension (equivalently, omitting a fixed finite (k+1)-partite (k+1)-uniform hypergraph) can be approximated by k-ary cylinder sets.
In the language of hypergraph regularity, this shows that when H is a k'-uniform hypergraph with small VC_k-dimension for some k<k', the decomposition of H given by hypergraph regularity only needs the first k levels---one can approximate H using sets of vertices, sets of pairs, and so on up to sets of k-tuples---and that on most of the resulting k-ary cylinder sets, the density of H is either close to 0 or close to 1.
We also show a suitable converse: k'-uniform hypergraphs with large VC_k-dimension cannot have such approximations uniformly under all measures on the vertices.

Given a graph $Γ$, its auxiliary \emph{square-graph} $\square(Γ)$ is the graph whose vertices are the non-edges of $Γ$ and whose edges are the pairs of non-edges which induce a square (i.e., a $4$-cycle) in $Γ$. We determine the threshold edge-probability $p=p_c(n)$ at which the Erd{\H o}s--Rényi random graph $Γ=Γ_{n,p}$ begins to asymptotically almost surely have a square-graph with a connected component whose squares together cover all the vertices of $Γ_{n,p}$. We show $p_c(n)=\sqrt{\sqrt{6}-2}/\sqrt{n}$, a polylogarithmic improvement on earlier bounds on $p_c(n)$ due to Hagen and the authors. As a corollary, we determine the threshold $p=p_c(n)$ at which the random right-angled Coxeter group $W_{Γ_{n,p}}$ asymptotically almost surely becomes strongly algebraically thick of order $1$ and has quadratic divergence.

Varieties of Tropical Ideals are Balanced

Tropical ideals, introduced in arXiv:1609.03838, define subschemes of tropical toric varieties. We prove that the top-dimensional parts of their varieties are balanced polyhedral complexes of the same dimension as the ideal. This means that every subscheme of a tropical toric variety defined by a tropical ideal has an associated class in the Chow ring of the toric variety. A key tool in the proof is that specialization of variables in a tropical ideal yields another tropical ideal; this plays the role of hyperplane sections in the theory. We also show that elimination theory (projection of varieties) works for tropical ideals as in the classical case. The matroid condition that defines tropical ideals is crucial for these results.

Given a family of sets on the plane, we say that the family is intersecting if for any two sets from the family their interiors intersect. In this paper, we study intersecting families of triangles with vertices in a given set of points. In particular, we show that if a set $P$ of $n$ points is in convex position, then the largest intersecting family of triangles with vertices in $P$ contains at most $(\frac{1}{4}+o(1))\binom{n}{3}$ triangles.
Positional games on randomly perturbed graphs

Maker-Breaker games are played on a hypergraph $(X,\mathcal{F})$, where $\mathcal{F} \subseteq 2^X$ denotes the family of winning sets. Both players alternately claim a predefined amount of edges (called bias) from the board $X$, and Maker wins the game if she is able to occupy any winning set $F \in \mathcal{F}$. These games are well studied when played on the complete graph $K_n$ or on a random graph $G_{n,p}$. In this paper we consider Maker-Breaker games played on randomly perturbed graphs instead. These graphs consist of the union of a deterministic graph $G_α$ with minimum degree at least $αn$ and a binomial random graph $G_{n,p}$. Depending on $α$ and Breaker's bias $b$ we determine the order of the threshold probability for winning the Hamiltonicity game and the $k$-connectivity game on $G_α\cup G_{n,p}$, and we discuss the $H$-game when $b=1$. Furthermore, we give optimal results for the Waiter-Client versions of all mentioned games.

A (folklore?) conjecture states that no holomorphic modular form $F(τ)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty a_nq^n\in q\mathbb Z[[q]]$ exists, where $q=e^{2πiτ}$, such that its anti-derivative $\sum_{n=1}^\infty a_nq^n/n$ has integral coefficients in the $q$-expansion. A recent observation of Broadhurst and Zudilin, rigorously accomplished by Li and Neururer, led to examples of meromorphic modular forms possessing the integrality property. In this note we investigate the arithmetic phenomenon from a systematic perspective and discuss related transcendental extensions of the differentially closed ring of quasi-modular forms.
A Generalization of Bohr-Mollerup's Theorem for Higher Order Convex Functions

In 1922, Harald Bohr and Johannes Mollerup established a remarkable characterization of the Euler gamma function using its log-convexity property. A decade later, Emil Artin investigated this result and used it to derive the basic properties of the gamma function using elementary methods of the calculus. Bohr-Mollerup's theorem was then adopted by Nicolas Bourbaki as the starting point for his exposition of the gamma function.
This open access book develops a far-reaching generalization of Bohr-Mollerup's theorem to higher order convex functions, along lines initiated by Wolfgang Krull, Roger Webster, and some others but going considerably further than past work. In particular, this generalization shows using elementary techniques that a very rich spectrum of functions satisfy analogues of several classical properties of the gamma function, including Bohr-Mollerup's theorem itself, Euler's reflection formula, Gauss' multiplication theorem, Stirling's formula, and Weierstrass' canonical factorization.
The scope of the theory developed in this work is illustrated through various examples, ranging from the gamma function itself and its variants and generalizations (q-gamma, polygamma, multiple gamma functions) to important special functions such as the Hurwitz zeta function and the generalized Stieltjes constants.
This volume is also an opportunity to honor the 100th anniversary of Bohr-Mollerup's theorem and to spark the interest of a large number of researchers in this beautiful theory.
