Laplacian Spectra of Comaximal Graph of $\mathbb{Z}_{n}$
Published in Special Matrices, 2021 • View Publication • BIB
This article focuses on finding the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix of the comaximal graph $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ of the ring $\mathbb Z_n$ for $n> 2$. We determine the eigenvalues of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ for various $n$ and also provide a procedure to find the eigenvalues of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ for any $n> 2$. We show that $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ is Laplacian Integral for $n=p^αq^β$ where $p,q$ are primes and $α, β$ are non-negative integers. The algebraic and vertex connectivity of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ have been shown to be equal for all $n> 2$. An upper bound on the second largest eigenvalue of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ has been obtained and a necessary and sufficient condition for its equality has also been determined. Finally we discuss the multiplicity of the spectral radius and the multiplicity of the algebraic connectivity of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$. Some problems have been discussed at the end of this article for further research.

On new record graphs close to bipartite Moore graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The modelling of interconnection networks by graphs motivated the study of several extremal problems that involve well known parameters of a graph (degree, diameter, girth and order) and ask for the optimal value of one of them while holding the other two fixed. Here we focus in {\em bipartite Moore graphs\/}, that is, bipartite graphs attaining the optimum order, fixed either the degree/diameter or degree/girth. The fact that there are very few bipartite Moore graphs suggests the relaxation of some of the constraints implied by the bipartite Moore bound. First we deal with {\em local bipartite Moore graphs}. We find in some cases those local bipartite Moore graphs with local girths as close as possible to the local girths given by a bipartite Moore graph. Second, we construct a family of $(q+2)$-bipartite graphs of order $2(q^2+q+5)$ and diameter $3$, for $q$ a power of prime. These graphs attain the record value for $q=9$ and improve the values for $q=11$ and $q=13$.

Regarding two conjectures on clique and biclique partitions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph $G$, let $cp(G)$ denote the minimum number of cliques of $G$ needed to cover the edges of $G$ exactly once. Similarly, let $bp_k(G)$ denote the minimum number of bicliques (i.e. complete bipartite subgraphs of $G$) needed to cover each edge of $G$ exactly $k$ times. We consider two conjectures -- one regarding the maximum possible value of $cp(G) + cp(\overline{G})$ (due to de Caen, Erdős, Pullman and Wormald) and the other regarding $bp_k(K_n)$ (due to de Caen, Gregory and Pritikin). We disprove the first, obtaining improved lower and upper bounds on $\max_G cp(G) + cp(\overline{G})$, and we prove an asymptotic version of the second, showing that $bp_k(K_n) = (1+o(1))n$.

The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-Number of a Simplicial Complex
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Δ$ be a simplicial complex on $[n]$. The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-complex of $Δ$ is the simplicial complex $δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$ on $[n]$ for which the facet ideal of $Δ$ is equal to the Stanley--Reisner ideal of $δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$. Furthermore, for each $k = 2,3,\ldots$\,, we introduce {\em $k^{th}$ $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-complex} $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$ which is inductively defined by $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(δ^{(k-1)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ))$ with setting $δ^{(1)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$. One can set $δ^{(0)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = Δ$. The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of $Δ$ is the smallest integer $k > 0$ for which $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) \simeq Δ$. In the present paper we are especially interested in the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of a finite graph, which can be regraded as a simplicial complex of dimension one. It is shown that the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of the finite graph $K_n\coprod K_m$ on $[n + m]$, which is the disjoint union of the complete graphs $K_n$ on $[n]$ and $K_m$ on $[m]$, where $n \geq 2$ and $m \geq 2$ with $(n,m) \neq (2,2)$, is equal to $n + m + 2$. Its corollary says that the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$ on $[n+m]$ is also equal to $n + m + 2$.

Variations of Andrews-Beck type congruences
Published in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications 495 (2021), no. 2, 124771 • View Publication • BIB
We prove three variations of recent results due to Andrews on congruences for $NT(m,k,n)$, the total number of parts in the partitions of $n$ with rank congruent to $m$ modulo $k$. We also conjecture new congruences and relations for $NT(m,k,n)$ and for a related crank-type function.

The structure of sandpile groups of outerplanar graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We compute the sandpile groups of families of planar graphs having a common weak dual by evaluating the indeterminates of the critical ideals of the weak dual at the lengths of the cycles bounding the interior faces. This method allow us to determine the algebraic structure of the sandpile groups of outerplanar graphs, and can be used to compute the sandpile groups of many other planar graph families. Finally, we compute the identity element for the sandpile groups of the dual graphs of many outerplane graphs.

Italian domination in generalized Petersen graphs
In a graph $G=(V,E)$, each vertex $v\in V$ is labelled with $0$, $1$ or $2$ such that each vertex labelled with $0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex labelled $2$ or two vertices labelled $1$. Such kind of labelling is called an Italian dominating function (IDF) of $G$. The weight of an IDF $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{v\in V}f(v)$. The Italian domination number of $G$ is $γ_{I}(G)=\min_{f} w(f)$. Gao et al. (2019) have determined the value of $γ_I(P(n,3))$. In this article, we focus on the study of the Italian domination number of generalized Petersen graphs $P(n, k)$, $k\neq3$. We determine the values of $γ_I(P(n, 1))$, $γ_I(P(n, 2))$ and $γ_I(P(n, k))$ for $k\ge4$, $k\equiv2,3(\bmod5)$ and $n\equiv0(\bmod5)$. For other $P(n,k)$, we present a bound of $γ_I(P(n, k))$. With the obtained results, we partially solve the open problem presented by Brešar et al. (2007) by giving $P(n,1)$ is an example for which $γ_I=γ_{r2}$ and characterizing $P(n,2)$ for which $γ_I(P(n,2))=γ_{r2}(P(n,2))$. Moreover, our results imply $P(n,1)$ $(n\equiv0(\bmod\ 4))$ is Italian, $P(n,1)$ $(n\not\equiv0(\bmod\ 4))$ and $P(n,2)$ are not Italian.

Semidefinite Programming Bounds For Spherical Three-distance Sets
Published • View Publication • BIB
A spherical three-distance set is a finite collection $X$ of unit vectors in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ such that for each pair of distinct vectors has three inner product values. We use the semidefinite programming method to improve the upper bounds of spherical three-distance sets for several dimensions. We obtain better bounds in $\mathbb{R}^7$, $\mathbb{R}^{20}$, $\mathbb{R}^{21}$, $\mathbb{R}^{23}$, $\mathbb{R}^{24}$ and $\mathbb{R}^{25}$. In particular, we prove that maximum size of spherical three-distance sets is $2300$ in $\mathbb R^{23}$.

Palindromic Length of Words with Many Periodic Palindromes
Published • View Publication • BIB
The palindromic length $\text{PL}(v)$ of a finite word $v$ is the minimal number of palindromes whose concatenation is equal to $v$. In 2013, Frid, Puzynina, and Zamboni conjectured that: If $w$ is an infinite word and $k$ is an integer such that $\text{PL}(u)\leq k$ for every factor $u$ of $w$ then $w$ is ultimately periodic. Suppose that $w$ is an infinite word and $k$ is an integer such $\text{PL}(u)\leq k$ for every factor $u$ of $w$. Let $Ω(w,k)$ be the set of all factors $u$ of $w$ that have more than $\sqrt[k]{k^{-1}\vert u\vert}$ palindromic prefixes. We show that $Ω(w,k)$ is an infinite set and we show that for each positive integer $j$ there are palindromes $a,b$ and a word $u\in Ω(w,k)$ such that $(ab)^j$ is a factor of $u$ and $b$ is nonempty. Note that $(ab)^j$ is a periodic word and $(ab)^ia$ is a palindrome for each $i\leq j$. These results justify the following question: What is the palindromic length of a concatenation of a suffix of $b$ and a periodic word $(ab)^j$ with "many" periodic palindromes? It is known that $\lvert\text{PL}(uv)-\text{PL}(u)\rvert\leq \text{PL}(v)$, where $u$ and $v$ are nonempty words. The main result of our article shows that if $a,b$ are palindromes, $b$ is nonempty, $u$ is a nonempty suffix of $b$, $\vert ab\vert$ is the minimal period of $aba$, and $j$ is a positive integer with $j\geq3\text{PL}(u)$ then $\text{PL}(u(ab)^j)-\text{PL}(u)\geq 0$.

In this note, we find a combinatorial identity which is closely related to the multi-dimensional integral $γ_{m}$ in the study of divisor functions. As an application, we determine the finite dual of the group algebra of infinite dihedral group.

A generalization of complete and elementary symmetric functions
In this paper, we consider the generating functions of the complete and elementary symmetric functions and provide a new generalization of these classical symmetric functions. Some classical relationships involving the complete and elementary symmetric functions are reformulated in a more general context. Combinatorial interpretations of these generalized symmetric functions are also introduced.
Reducing graph transversals via edge contractions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a graph invariant $π$, the Contraction($π$) problem consists in, given a graph $G$ and two positive integers $k,d$, deciding whether one can contract at most $k$ edges of $G$ to obtain a graph in which $π$ has dropped by at least $d$. Galby et al. [ISAAC 2019, MFCS 2019] recently studied the case where $π$ is the size of a minimum dominating set. We focus on graph invariants defined as the minimum size of a vertex set that hits all the occurrences of graphs in a collection ${\cal H}$ according to a fixed containment relation. We prove co-NP-hardness results under some assumptions on the graphs in ${\cal H}$, which in particular imply that Contraction($π$) is co-NP-hard even for fixed $k=d=1$ when $π$ is the size of a minimum feedback vertex set or an odd cycle transversal. In sharp contrast, we show that when $π$ is the size of a minimum vertex cover, the problem is in XP parameterized by $d$.

Flow-Partitionable Signed Graphs
The NP-hard problem of correlation clustering is to partition a signed graph such that the number of conflicts between the partition and the signature of the graph is minimized. This paper studies graph signatures that allow the optimal partition to be found efficiently. We define the class of flow-partitionable signed graphs, which have the property that the standard linear programming relaxation based on so-called cycle inequalities is tight. In other words, flow-partitionable signed graphs satisfy an exact max-multiflow-min-multicut relation in the associated instances of minimum multicut. In this work we propose to characterize flow-partitionable signed graphs in terms of forbidden minors. Our initial results include two infinite classes of forbidden minors, which are sufficient if the positive subgraph is a circuit or a tree. For the general case we present another forbidden minor and point out a connection to open problems in the theory of ideal clutters.

Dualities and reciprocities on graphs on surfaces
Published • View Publication • BIB
We extend the duality between acyclic orientations and totally cyclic orientations on planar graphs to dualities on graphs on orientable surfaces by introducing boundary acyclic orientations and totally bi-walkable orientations. In addition, we provide a reciprocity theorem connecting local tensions and boundary acyclic orientations. Furthermore, we define the balanced flow polynomial which is connected with tension polynomial by duality and with totally bi-walkable orientations by reciprocity.

Cubic vertex-transitive graphs of girth six
Published in Discrete Math. 345(3) (2022) art. 112734 • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, a complete classification of finite simple cubic vertex-transitive graphs of girth $6$ is obtained. It is proved that every such graph, with the exception of the Desargues graph on $20$ vertices, is either a skeleton of a hexagonal tiling of the torus, the skeleton of the truncation of an arc-transitive triangulation of a closed hyperbolic surface, or the truncation of a $6$-regular graph with respect to an arc-transitive dihedral scheme. Cubic vertex-transitive graphs of girth larger than $6$ are also discussed.

Investigating the discrepancy property of de Bruijn sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
The discrepancy of a binary string refers to the maximum (absolute) difference between the number of ones and the number of zeroes over all possible substrings of the given binary string. We provide an investigation of the discrepancy of known simple constructions of de Bruijn sequences. Furthermore, we demonstrate constructions that attain the lower bound of $Θ(n)$ and a new construction that attains the previously known upper bound of $Θ(\frac{2^n}{\sqrt{n}})$. This extends the work of Cooper and Heitsch~[\emph{Discrete Mathematics}, 310 (2010)].

Some properties of generalized hypergeometric Appell polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we present a new real-valued Appell-type polynomial family $A_n^{(k)}(m,x), $ every member of which is expressed by mean of a generalized hypergeometric function. The generating exponential function of this type of polynomials is firstly discovered and the proof that they are of Appell-type ones is given. We present the differential operator formal power series representation as well as an explicit formula over the standard basis, and establish a new identity for the generalized hypergeometric function. Besides, we derive the addition, the multiplication and some other formulas for this polynomial family

Minimum degrees for powers of paths and cycles
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 36 (2022), no. 4, 2667-2736 • View Publication • BIB
We study minimum degree conditions under which a graph $G$ contains $k$th powers of paths and cycles of arbitrary specified lengths. We determine precise thresholds, assuming that the order of $G$ is large. This extends a result of Allen, Böttcher and Hladký [J. Lond. Math. Soc. (2) 84(2) (2011), 269--302] concerning the containment of squares of paths and squares of cycles of arbitrary specified lengths and settles a conjecture of theirs in the affirmative.

On the list recoverability of randomly punctured codes
We show that a random puncturing of a code with good distance is list recoverable beyond the Johnson bound. In particular, this implies that there are Reed-Solomon codes that are list recoverable beyond the Johnson bound. It was previously known that there are Reed-Solomon codes that do not have this property. As an immediate corollary to our main theorem, we obtain better degree bounds on unbalanced expanders that come from Reed-Solomon codes.
