Perfect matchings and Hamiltonicity in the Cartesian product of cycles
Published in Ann. Comb. 25, No. 3, 789-796 (2021). SharedIt link: https://rdcu.be/csdJK • View Publication • BIB
A pairing of a graph $G$ is a perfect matching of the complete graph having the same vertex set as $G$. If every pairing of $G$ can be extended to a Hamiltonian cycle of the underlying complete graph using only edges from $G$, then $G$ has the PH-property. A somewhat weaker property is the PMH-property, whereby every perfect matching of $G$ can be extended to a Hamiltonian cycle of $G$. In an attempt to characterise all 4-regular graphs having the PH-property, we answer a question made in 2015 by Alahmadi et al. by showing that the Cartesian product $C_p\square C_q$ of two cycles on $p$ and $q$ vertices does not have the PMH-property, except for $C_4\square C_4$ which is known to have the PH-property.

New Methods in Coding Theory: Error-Correcting Codes and the Shannon Capacity
In this thesis we present several results in coding theory, concerning error-correcting codes and the Shannon capacity. 1. We give a general symmetry reduction of matrices occuring in semidefinite programs in coding theory. 2. We apply the symmetry reduction to efficiently compute semidefinite programming upper bounds for nonbinary error-correcting codes equipped with the Hamming distance (joint work with Bart Litjens and Lex Schrijver), with the Lee distance and for binary constant weight codes. 3. We explore other methods to find new upper bounds for nonbinary codes with the Hamming distance, based on combinatorial divisibility arguments. 4. We study uniqueness and classification of codes, using the output of the semidefinite programming solver. Most of our classification results are related to subcodes of the binary Golay code. This is joint work with Andries Brouwer. 5. We consider the Shannon capacity of circular graphs. The circular graph $C_{d,q}$ is the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_q$ (the cyclic group of order q) in which two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance (mod $q$) is strictly less than $d$. The Shannon capacity of $C_{d,q}$ can be seen to only depend on the fraction q/d. We prove that the function which assigns to each rational number $q/d$ the Shannon capacity of $C_{d,q}$ is continuous at integer points $q/d$. Moreover, we give a new lower bound on the Shannon capacity of the $7$-cycle. This is joint work with Lex Schrijver. This thesis was written at the University of Amsterdam under supervision of Lex Schrijver.
Distinct Distances Between a Circle and a Generic Set
Let $S$ be a set of points in $\mathbb{R}^2$ contained in a circle and $P$ an unrestricted point set in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We prove the number of distinct distances between points in $S$ and points in $P$ is at least $\min(|S||P|^{1/4-\varepsilon},|S|^{2/3}|P|^{2/3},|S|^2,|P|^2)$. This builds on work of Pach and De Zeeuw, Bruner and Sharir, McLaughlin and Omar and Mathialagan on distances between pairs of sets.

Cliques with many colors in triple systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Erdős and Hajnal constructed a 4-coloring of the triples of an $N$-element set such that every $n$-element subset contains 2 triples with distinct colors, and $N$ is double exponential in $n$. Conlon, Fox and Rödl asked whether there is some integer $q\ge 3$ and a $q$-coloring of the triples of an $N$-element set such that every $n$-element subset has 3 triples with distinct colors, and $N$ is double exponential in $n$. We make the first nontrivial progress on this problem by providing a $q$-coloring with this property for all $q\geq 9$, where $N$ is exponential in $n^{2+cq}$ and $c>0$ is an absolute constant.

Hydrodynamic limit of Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm
Published in Random Structures Algorithms 60 (2022), 106-116 • View Publication • BIB
We investigate the evolution in time of the position of a fixed number in the insertion tableau when the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm is applied to a sequence of random numbers. When the length of the sequence tends to infinity, a typical trajectory after scaling converges uniformly in probability to some deterministic curve.

Avoiding 5/4-powers on the alphabet of nonnegative integers
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 27 (2020) #P3.42 (39 pages) • View Publication • BIB
We identify the structure of the lexicographically least word avoiding 5/4-powers on the alphabet of nonnegative integers. Specifically, we show that this word has the form $p τ(\varphi(z) \varphi^2(z) \cdots)$ where $p, z$ are finite words, $\varphi$ is a 6-uniform morphism, and $τ$ is a coding. This description yields a recurrence for the $i$th letter, which we use to prove that the sequence of letters is 6-regular with rank 188. More generally, we prove $k$-regularity for a sequence satisfying a recurrence of the same type.

On a curious variant of the $S_n$-module $Lie_n$
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3, Issue 4 (2020), pp. 985-1009 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a variant of the much-studied $Lie$ representation of the symmetric group $S_n$, which we denote by $Lie_n^{(2)}.$ Our variant gives rise to a decomposition of the regular representation as a sum of {exterior} powers of modules $Lie_n^{(2)}.$ This is in contrast to the theorems of Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt and Thrall which decompose the regular representation into a sum of symmetrised $Lie$ modules. We show that nearly every known property of $Lie_n$ has a counterpart for the module $Lie_n^{(2)},$ suggesting connections to the cohomology of configuration spaces via the character formulas of Sundaram and Welker, to the Eulerian idempotents of Gerstenhaber and Schack, and to the Hodge decomposition of the complex of injective words arising from Hochschild homology, due to Hanlon and Hersh.

Helly-gap of a graph and vertex eccentricities
Published • View Publication • BIB
A new metric parameter for a graph, Helly-gap, is introduced. A graph $G$ is called $α$-weakly-Helly if any system of pairwise intersecting disks in $G$ has a nonempty common intersection when the radius of each disk is increased by an additive value $α$. The minimum $α$ for which a graph $G$ is $α$-weakly-Helly is called the Helly-gap of $G$ and denoted by $α(G)$. The Helly-gap of a graph $G$ is characterized by distances in the injective hull $\mathcal{H}(G)$, which is a (unique) minimal Helly graph which contains $G$ as an isometric subgraph. This characterization is used as a tool to generalize many eccentricity related results known for Helly graphs ($α(G)=0$), as well as for chordal graphs ($α(G)\le 1$), distance-hereditary graphs ($α(G)\le 1$) and $δ$-hyperbolic graphs ($α(G)\le 2δ$), to all graphs, parameterized by their Helly-gap $α(G)$. Several additional graph classes are shown to have a bounded Helly-gap, including AT-free graphs and graphs with bounded tree-length, bounded chordality or bounded $α_i$-metric.

A strategy for Isolator in the Toucher-Isolator game on trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the Toucher-Isolator game, introduced recently by Dowden, Kang, Mikalački and Stojaković, Toucher and Isolator alternately claim an edge from a graph such that Toucher aims to touch as many vertices as possible, while Isolator aims to isolate as many vertices as possible, where Toucher plays first. Among trees with $n$ vertices, they showed that the star is the best choice for Isolator and they asked for the most suitable tree for Toucher. Later, Räty showed that the answer is the path with $n$ vertices. We give a simple alternative proof of this result. The method to determine where Isolator should play is by breaking down the gains and losses in each move of both players.

Log-concavity of matroid h-vectors and mixed Eulerian numbers
Published • View Publication • BIB
For any matroid $M$, we compute the Tutte polynomial $T_M(x,y)$ using the mixed intersection numbers of certain classes in the combinatorial Chow ring $A^\bullet(M)$ arising from hypersimplices. Using the mixed Hodge-Riemann relations, we deduce a strengthening of the log-concavity of the $h$-vector of a matroid complex, improving on an old conjecture of Dawson.

Lower bound of the energy of a complex unit gain graph in terms of the matching number of its underlying graph
We establish a lower bound for the energy of a complex unit gain graph in terms of the matching number of its underlying graph, and characterize all the complex unit gain graphs whose energy reaches this bound.
The oriented swap process and last passage percolation
Published in Random Struct. Algorithms, 60(4): 690-715 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
We present new probabilistic and combinatorial identities relating three random processes: the oriented swap process on $n$ particles, the corner growth process, and the last passage percolation model. We prove one of the probabilistic identities, relating a random vector of last passage percolation times to its dual, using the duality between the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth and Burge correspondences. A second probabilistic identity, relating those two vectors to a vector of 'last swap times' in the oriented swap process, is conjectural. We give a computer-assisted proof of this identity for $n\le 6$ after first reformulating it as a purely combinatorial identity, and discuss its relation to the Edelman-Greene correspondence. The conjectural identity provides precise finite-$n$ and asymptotic predictions on the distribution of the absorbing time of the oriented swap process, thus conditionally solving an open problem posed by Angel, Holroyd and Romik.

Expansion Posets for Polygon Cluster Algebras
Define an expansion poset to be the poset of monomials of a cluster variable attached to an arc in a polygon, where each monomial is represented by the corresponding combinatorial object from some fixed combinatorial cluster expansion formula. We introduce an involution on several of the interrelated combinatorial objects and constructions associated to type $A$ surface cluster algebras, including certain classes of arcs, triangulations, and distributive lattices. We use these involutions to formulate a dual version of skein relations for arcs, and dual versions of three existing expansion posets. In particular, this leads to two new cluster expansion formulas, and recovers the lattice path expansion of Propp et al. We provide an explicit, structure-preserving poset isomorphism between an expansion poset and its dual version from the dual arc. We also show that an expansion poset and its dual version constructed from the same arc are dual in the sense of distributive lattices. We show that any expansion poset is isomorphic to a closed interval in one of the lattices $L(m,n)$ of Young diagrams contained in an $m \times n$ grid, and that any $L(m,n)$ has a covering by such intervals. We give two formulas for the rank function of any lattice path expansion poset, and prove that this rank function is unimodal whenever the underlying snake graph is built from at most four maximal straight segments. We show that the support of any type $A$ cluster variable is the orbit of a groupoid. Finally, in work joint with Nicholas Ovenhouse, we partially generalize $T$-paths to configurations of affine flags, and prove that a $T$-path expansion analogous to the type $A$ case holds when the initial seed is from a fan triangulation.

Higher Specht bases for generalizations of the coinvariant ring
Published • View Publication • BIB
The classical coinvariant ring $R_n$ is defined as the quotient of a polynomial ring in $n$ variables by the positive-degree $S_n$-invariants. It has a known basis that respects the decomposition of $R_n$ into irreducible $S_n$-modules, consisting of the higher specht polynomials due to Ariki, Terasoma, and Yamada. We provide an extension of the higher Specht basis to the generalized coinvariant rings $R_{n,k}$. We also give a conjectured higher Specht basis for the Garsia-Procesi modules $R_μ$, and provide a proof of the conjecture in the case of two-row partition shapes $μ$. We then combine these results to give a higher Specht basis for an infinite subfamily of the modules $R_{n,k,μ}$ recently defined by Griffin, which are a common generalization of $R_{n,k}$ and $R_μ$.

ProPs of graphs and generalised traces
We assign generalised convolutions (resp. traces) to graphs whose edges are decorated by smooth kernels (resp. smoothing operators) on a closed manifold. To do so, we introduce the concept of TraPs (Traces and Permutations), which roughly correspond to ProPs (Products and Permutations) without vertical concatenation and equipped with families of generalised partial traces. They can be equipped with a ProP structure in deriving vertical concatenation from the partial traces and we relate TraPs to wheeled ProPs first introduced by Merkulov. We further build their free object and give precise proofs of universal properties of ProPs and TraPs.

Degree Distributions in Recursive Trees with Fitnesses
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study a general model of recursive trees where vertices are equipped with independent weights and at each time-step a vertex is sampled with probability proportional to its fitness function (a function of its weight and degree) and connects to $\ell$ new-coming vertices. Under a certain technical assumption, applying the theory of Crump-Mode-Jagers branching processes, we derive formulas for the almost sure limiting distribution of the proportion of vertices with a given degree and weight, and proportion of edges with endpoint having a certain weight. As an application of this theorem, we prove rigorously observations of Bianconi related to the evolving Cayley tree in [$\mathit{Phys. \, Rev. \, E} \; \mathbf{66}, \text{ 036116 (2002)}$]. We also study the process in depth when the technical condition can fail in the particular case when the fitness function is affine, a model we call "generalised preferential attachment with fitness". We show that this model can exhibit condensation where a positive proportion of edges accumulate around vertices with maximal weight, or, more drastically, have a degenerate limiting degree distribution where the entire proportion of edges accumulate around these vertices. Finally, we prove stochastic convergence for the degree distribution under a different assumption of a strong law of large numbers for the partition function associated with the process.

Packing minima and lattice points in convex bodies
Published in Moscow J. Comb. Number Th. 10 (2021) 25-48 • View Publication • BIB
Motivated by long-standing conjectures on the discretization of classical inequalities in the Geometry of Numbers, we investigate a new set of parameters, which we call \emph{packing minima}, associated to a convex body $K$ and a lattice $Λ$. These numbers interpolate between the successive minima of $K$ and the inverse of the successive minima of the polar body of $K$, and can be understood as packing counterparts to the covering minima of Kannan & Lovász (1988). As our main results, we prove sharp inequalities that relate the volume and the number of lattice points in $K$ to the sequence of packing minima. Moreover, we extend classical transference bounds and discuss a natural class of examples in detail.
Homogeneous sets, clique-separators, critical graphs, and optimal $χ$-binding functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a set $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, let $f_\mathcal{H}^\star\colon \mathbb{N}_{>0}\to \mathbb{N}_{>0}$ be the optimal $χ$-binding function of the class of $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs, that is, $$f_\mathcal{H}^\star(ω)=\max\{χ(G): G\text{ is } \mathcal{H}\text{-free, } ω(G)=ω\}.$$ In this paper, we combine the two decomposition methods by homogeneous sets and clique-separators in order to determine optimal $χ$-binding functions for subclasses of $P_5$-free graphs and of $(C_5,C_7,\ldots)$-free graphs. In particular, we prove the following for each $ω\geq 1$: (i) $\ f_{\{P_5,banner\}}^\star(ω)=f_{3K_1}^\star(ω)\in Θ(ω^2/\log(ω)),$ (ii) $\ f_{\{P_5,co-banner\}}^\star(ω)=f^\star_{\{2K_2\}}(ω)\in\mathcal{O}(ω^2),$ (iii) $\ f_{\{C_5,C_7,\ldots,banner\}}^\star(ω)=f^\star_{\{C_5,3K_1\}}(ω)\notin \mathcal{O}(ω),$ and (iv) $\ f_{\{P_5,C_4\}}^\star(ω)=\lceil(5ω-1)/4\rceil.$ We also characterise, for each of our considered graph classes, all graphs $G$ with $χ(G)>χ(G-u)$ for each $u\in V(G)$. From these structural results, we can prove Reed's conjecture -- relating chromatic number, clique number, and maximum degree of a graph -- for $(P_5,banner)$-free graphs.

Graph Homomorphisms Based On Particular Total Colorings of Graphs and Graphic Lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
Lattice-based cryptography is not only for thwarting future quantum computers, and is also the basis of Fully Homomorphic Encryption. Motivated from the advantage of graph homomorphisms we combine graph homomorphisms with graph total colorings together for designing new types of graph homomorphisms: totally-colored graph homomorphisms, graphic-lattice homomorphisms from sets to sets, every-zero graphic group homomorphisms from sets to sets. Our graph-homomorphism lattices are made up by graph homomorphisms. These new homomorphisms induce some problems of graph theory, for example, Number String Decomposition and Graph Homomorphism Problem.
