Positivity properties of some special matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is shown that for positive real numbers $ 0<λ_{1}<\dots<λ_{n}$, $\left[\frac{1}{β({λ_i}, {λ_j})}\right]$, where $ β(\cdot,\cdot)$ denotes the beta function, is infinitely divisible and totally positive. For $ \left[\frac{1}{β({i},{j})}\right]$, the Cholesky decomposition and successive elementary bidiagonal decomposition are computed. Let $\mathfrak w(n)$ be the $n$th Bell number. It is proved that $\left[\mathfrak w(i+j)\right]$ is a totally positive matrix but is infinitely divisible only upto order $4$. It is also shown that the symmetrized Stirling matrices are totally positive.

Iterated Global Models for Complex Networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the Iterated Global model as a deterministic graph process that simulates several properties of complex networks. In this model, for every set $S$ of nodes of a prescribed cardinality, we add a new node that is adjacent to every node in $S$. We focus on the case where the size of $S$ is approximately half the number of nodes at each time-step, and we refer to this as the half-model. The half-model provably generate graphs that densify over time, have bad spectral expansion, and low diameter. We derive the clique, chromatic, and domination numbers of graphs generated by the model.

Small uncountable cardinals in large-scale topology
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we are interested in finding and evaluating cardinal characteristics of the continuum that appear in large-scale topology, usually as the smallest weights of coarse structures that belong to certain classes (indiscrete, inseparated, large) of finitary or locally finite coarse structures on $ω$. Besides well-known cardinals $\mathfrak b,\mathfrak d,\mathfrak c$ we shall encounter two new cardinals $\mathsf Δ$ and $\mathsf Σ$, defined as the smallest weight of a finitary coarse structure on $ω$ which contains no discrete subspaces and no asymptotically separated sets, respectively. We prove that $\max\{\mathfrak b,\mathfrak s,\mathrm{cov}(\mathcal N)\}\le\mathsf Δ\le\mathsf Σ\le\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$, but we do not know if the cardinals $\mathsf Δ,\mathsf Σ,\mathrm{non}(\mathcal M)$ can be separated in suitable models of ZFC.

Divisibility results concerning truncated hypergeometric series
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, using the well-known Karlsson-Minton formula, we mainly establish two divisibility results concerning truncated hypergeometric series. Let $n>2$ and $q>0$ be integers with $2\mid n$ or $2\nmid q$. We show that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{(q-\frac{p}{n})_k^n}{(1)_k^n}\equiv0\pmod{p^3} $$ and $$p^n\sum_{k=0}^{p-1}\frac{(1)_k^n}{(\frac{p}{n}-q+2)_k^n}\equiv0\pmod{p^3}$$ for any prime $p>\max\{n,(q-1)n+1\}$, where $(x)_k$ denotes the Pochhammer symbol defined by $$ (x)_k=\begin{cases}1,\quad &k=0,\\ x(x+1)\cdots(x+k-1),\quad &k>0.\end{cases}$$ Let $n\geq4$ be an even integer. Then for any prime $p$ with $p\equiv-1\pmod{n}$, the first congruence above implies that $$\sum_{k=0}^{p-1} \frac{(\frac{1}{n})_k^n}{(1)_k^n}\equiv0\pmod{p^3}. $$ This confirms a recent conjecture of Guo.
Algebraic reliability of multi-state $k$-out-of-$n$ systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we review different definitions that multi-state $k$-out-of-$n$ systems have received along the literature and study them in a unified way using the algebra of monomial ideals. We thus obtain formulas and algorithms to compute their reliability and bounds for it.

Greedy weights for matroids
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce greedy weights of matroids, inspired by those for linear codes. We show that a Wei duality holds for two of these types of greedy weights for matroids. Moreover we show that in the cases where the matroids involved are associated to linear codes, our definitions coincide with those for codes. Thus our Wei duality is a generalization of that for linear codes given by Schaathun. In the last part of the paper we show how some important chains of cycles of the matroids appearing, correspond to chains of component maps of minimal resolutions of the independence complex of the corresponding matroids. We also relate properties of these resolutions to chainedness and greedy weights of the matroids, and in many cases codes, that appear.

Diameters of random Cayley graphs of finite nilpotent groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove the existence of a limiting distribution for the appropriately rescaled diameters of random undirected Cayley graphs of finite nilpotent groups of bounded rank and nilpotency class, thus extending a result of Shapira and Zuck which dealt with the case of abelian groups. The limiting distribution is defined on a space of unimodular lattices, as in the case of random Cayley graphs of abelian groups. Our result, when specialised to a certain family of unitriangular groups, establishes a very recent conjecture of Hermon and Thomas. We derive this as a consequence of a general inequality, showing that the diameter of a Cayley graph of a nilpotent group is governed by the diameter of its abelianisation.
Spectra of chains connected to complete graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We characterize the spectrum of the Laplacian of graphs composed of one or two finite or infinite chains connected to a complete graph. We show the existence of localized eigenvectors of two types, eigenvectors that vanish exactly outside the complete graph and eigenvectors that decrease exponentially outside the complete graph. Our results also imply gaps between the eigenvalues corresponding to localized and extended eigenvectors.

Local Balance in Graph Decompositions
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a balanced graph decomposition, every vertex of the host graph appears in the same number of blocks. We propose the use of colored loops as a framework for unifying various other types of local balance conditions in graph decompositions. In the basic case where a single graph with colored loops is used as a block, an existence theory for such decompositions follows as a straightforward generalization of previous work on balanced graph decompositions.

Perfect sequence covering arrays
Published in Designs, Codes and Cryptography 88(2020),585-593 • View Publication • BIB
An $(n,k)$ sequence covering array is a set of permutations of $[n]$ such that each sequence of $k$ distinct elements of $[n]$ is a subsequence of at least one of the permutations. An $(n,k)$ sequence covering array is perfect if there is a positive integer $λ$ such that each sequence of $k$ distinct elements of $[n]$ is a subsequence of precisely $λ$ of the permutations. While relatively close upper and lower bounds for the minimum size of a sequence covering array are known, this is not the case for perfect sequence covering arrays. Here we present new nontrivial bounds for the latter. In particular, for $k=3$ we obtain a linear lower bound and an almost linear upper bound.

Full rainbow matchings in equivalence relations
We show that if a multigraph $G$ with maximum edge-multiplicity of at most $\frac{\sqrt{n}}{\log^2 n}$, is edge-coloured by $n$ colours such that each colour class is a disjoint union of cliques with at least $2n + o(n)$ vertices, then it has a full rainbow matching, that is, a matching where each colour appears exactly once. This asymptotically solves a question raised by Clemens, Ehrenmüller and Pokrovskiy, and is related to problems on algebras of sets studied by Grinblat in [Grinblat 2002].
Total tessellation cover and quantum walk
We propose the total staggered quantum walk model and the total tessellation cover of a graph. This model uses the concept of total tessellation cover to describe the motion of the walker who is allowed to hop both to vertices and edges of the graph, in contrast with previous models in which the walker hops either to vertices or edges. We establish bounds on $T_t(G)$, which is the smallest number of tessellations required in a total tessellation cover of $G$. We highlight two of these lower bounds $T_t(G) \geq ω(G)$ and $T_t(G)\geq is(G)+1$, where $ω(G)$ is the size of a maximum clique and $is(G)$ is the number of edges of a maximum induced star subgraph. Using these bounds, we define the good total tessellable graphs with either $T_t(G)=ω(G)$ or $T_t(G)=is(G)+1$. The $k$-total tessellability problem aims to decide whether a given graph $G$ has $T_t(G) \leq k$. We show that $k$-total tessellability is in $\mathcal{P}$ for good total tessellable graphs. We establish the $\mathcal{NP}$-completeness of the following problems when restricted to the following classes: ($is(G)+1$)-total tessellability for graphs with $ω(G) = 2$; $ω(G)$-total tessellability for graphs $G$ with $is(G)+1 = 3$; $k$-total tessellability for graphs $G$ with $\max\{ω(G), is(G)+1\}$ far from $k$; and $4$-total tessellability for graphs $G$ with $ω(G) = is(G)+1 = 4$. As a consequence, we establish hardness results for bipartite graphs, line graphs of triangle-free graphs, universal graphs, planar graphs, and $(2,1)$-chordal graphs.

On a Conjecture about Degree Deviation Measure of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let G be an n-vertex graph with m edges. The degree deviation measure of G is defined as s(G)=sum v in V(G)|degG(v)-(2m/n)|, where n and m are the number of vertices and edges of G, respectively. The aim of this paper is to prove the Conjecture 4.2 of [J A de Oliveira, C S Oliveira, C Justel and N M Maia de Abreu, Measures of irregularity of graphs, Pesq. Oper. 33 (3) (2013) 383-398]. The degree deviation measure of chemical graphs under some conditions on the cyclomatic number is also computed.

Weighted Hurwitz numbers, $τ$-functions and matrix integrals
Published in In: Quantum Theory and Symmetries. CRM Series in Mathematical Physics. Springer, Cham (2021), Paranjape M.B., MacKenzie R., Thomova Z., Winternitz P., Witczak-Krempa W. (eds) • View Publication • BIB
The basis elements spanning the Sato Grassmannian element corresponding to the KP $τ$-function that serves as generating function for rationally weighted Hurwitz numbers are shown to be Meijer $G$-functions. Using their Mellin-Barnes integral representation the $τ$-function, evaluated at the trace invariants of an externally coupled matrix, is expressed as a matrix integral. Using the Mellin-Barnes integral transform of an infinite product of $Γ$ functions, a similar matrix integral representation is given for the KP $τ$-function that serves as generating function for quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers.

Automorphisms and opposition in spherical buildings of exceptional type, I
Published • View Publication • BIB
To each automorphism of a spherical building there is naturally associated an "opposition diagram", which encodes the types of the simplices of the building that are mapped onto opposite simplices. If no chamber (that is, no maximal simplex) of the building is mapped onto an opposite chamber then the automorphism is called "domestic". In this paper we give the complete classification of domestic automorphisms of split spherical buildings of types $\mathsf{E}_6$, $\mathsf{F}_4$, and $\mathsf{G}_2$. Moreover, for all split spherical buildings of exceptional type we classify (i) the domestic homologies, (ii) the opposition diagrams arising from elements of the standard unipotent subgroup of the Chevalley group, and (iii) the automorphisms with opposition diagrams with at most $2$ distinguished orbits encircled. Our results provide unexpected characterisations of long root elations and products of perpendicular long root elations in long root geometries, and analogues of the density theorem for connected linear algebraic groups in the setting of Chevalley groups over arbitrary fields.

3-degenerate induced subgraph of a planar graph
Published in J. Graph Theory, 99(2):251-277, February 2022 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is $d$-degenerate if every non-null subgraph of $G$ has a vertex of degree at most $d$. We prove that every $n$-vertex planar graph has a $3$-degenerate induced subgraph of order at least $3n/4$.

The uniqueness of covers for widely generalized line graphs
As a natural generalization of line graphs, Hoffman line graphs were defined by Woo and Neumaier. Especially, Hoffman line graphs are closely related to the smallest eigenvalue of graphs, and the uniqueness of strict covers of a Hoffman line graph plays a key role in such a study. In this paper, we prove a theorem for the uniqueness of strict covers under a condition which can be checked in finite time. Our result gives a generalization and a short proof for the main part of [Ars Math.~Contemp. \textbf{1} (2008) 81--98].

Generating function for Naturalized Series: The case of Ordered Motzkin Words
We continue to consider the ordered lexicographic sequence, which is constructed according to the formal characteristics of a series of natural numbers. For analysis, we selected balanced parentheses with zeros, Motzkin words. As you know, generating functions allow you to work with combinatorial objects by analytical methods. Motzkin words are enumerated by Motzkin numbers, for the generation of which there is a corresponding generating function. In our case, restrictions are imposed on Motzkin words, for example, there are no leading zeros in bracket sets. The purpose of this article is to obtain the generating function of such modified Motzkin words.
