Generalized topological state-sum constructions and their universality
We formalize and generalize the concept of a topological state-sum construction using the language of tensor networks. We give examples for constructions that are possibly more general than all state-sum constructions in the literature that we are aware of. In particular we propose a state-sum construction that is universal in the sense that it can emulate every other state-sum construction. Physically, state-sum models in $n$ dimensions correspond to fixed point models for topological phases of matter in $n$ space-time dimensions. We conjecture that our universal state-sum construction contains fixed point models for topological phases that are not captured by known constructions. In particular we demonstrate that, unlike common state-sum constructions, the construction is compatible with the absence of gapped boundaries and commuting-projector Hamiltonians in $2+1$-dimensional chiral topological phases.

Upper Tail For Homomorphism Counts In Constrained Sparse Random Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider the upper tail probability that the homomorphism count of a fixed graph $H$ within a large sparse random graph $G_n$ exceeds its expected value by a fixed factor $1+δ$. Going beyond the Erdős-Rényi model, we establish here explicit, sharp upper tail decay rates for sparse random $d_n$-regular graphs (provided $H$ has a regular $2$-core), and for sparse uniform random graphs. We further deal with joint upper tail probabilities for homomorphism counts of multiple graphs $H_1,\ldots, H_k$ (extending the known results for $k=1$), and for inhomogeneous graph ensembles (such as the stochastic block model), we bound the upper tail probability by a variational problem analogous to the one that determines its decay rate in the case of sparse Erdős-Rényi graphs.

Free resolutions of function classes via order complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
Function classes are collections of Boolean functions on a finite set, which are fundamental objects of study in theoretical computer science. We study algebraic properties of ideals associated to function classes previously defined by the third author. We consider the broad family of intersection-closed function classes, and describe cellular free resolutions of their ideals by order complexes of the associated posets. For function classes arising from matroids, polyhedral cell complexes, and more generally interval Cohen-Macaulay posets, we show that the multigraded Betti numbers are pure, and are given combinatorially by the Möbius functions. We then apply our methods to derive bounds on the VC dimension of some important families of function classes in learning theory.

The firing squad synchronization problem for squares with holes
The firing squad synchronization problem (FSSP, for short) is a problem in automata theory introduced in 1957 by John Myhill. Its goal is to design a finite automaton A such that, if copies of A are placed in a line and connected and are started at time 0 with their leftmost copy in a special triggering state, then at some time (the "firing time") all copies enter a special "firing state" simultaneously for the first time. FSSP has many variations and for many of them we know minimal-time solutions (solutions having shortest firing time). One of such variations is the FSSP for squares (denoted by SQ) in which copies are placed in a square. In this paper we introduce a variation which we call the FSSP for squares with k holes and denote by SH[k] by slightly modifying SQ (k >= 1). In the variation, copies of a finite automaton are placed in a square but there are k positions ("holes") in the square where no copies are placed. We show that SH[1] has a minimal-time solution. Moreover, for each problem instance (a placement of copies in a square) C of SH[2], we determine the minimum firing time of C (the minimum value of firing times of C by A where A ranges over all solutions of SH[2]). The variation SQ was introduced and its minimal-time solutions were found in 1970's. However, to find minimal-time solutions of SH[k], a very simple modification of SQ, seems to be a very difficult and challenging problem for k >= 2.

On Validity of Reed Conjecture for Classes of Graphs with Two Forbidden Subgraphs
Reed Conjecture is open for more than 20 years now. Here we prove that Reed Conjecture is valid for (1) {P4UnionK1, Kite}-free graphs (2) {Chair, Kite}-free graphs (3) {K2UnionK2complement , H}-free graphs and (4) {2K2, M}-free graphs where H and M are graphs on six vertices each. Reed conjecture is still open in general.

Integrability approach to Feher-Nemethi-Rimanyi-Guo-Sun type identities for factorial Grothendieck polynomials
Published in Nucl. Phys. B 954 (2020) 114998 • View Publication • BIB
Recently, Guo and Sun derived an identity for factorial Grothendieck polynomials which is a generalization of the one for Schur polynomials by Fehér, Némethi and Rimányi. We analyze the identity from the point of view of quantum integrability, based on the correspondence between the wavefunctions of a five-vertex model and the Grothendieck polynomials. We give another proof using the quantum inverse scattering method. We also apply the same idea and technique to derive an identity for factorial Grothendieck polynomials for rectangular Young diagrams. Combining with the Guo-Sun identity, we get a duality formula. We also discuss a $q$-deformation of the Guo-Sun identity.

State sums for some super quantum link invariants
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present state sums for quantum link invariants arising from the representation theory of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{N|M})$. We investigate the case of the $N$-th exterior power of the standard representation of $U_q(\mathfrak{gl}_{N|1})$ and explicit the relation with Kashaev invariants.
Half-graphs, other non-stable degree sequences, and the switch Markov chain
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, Volume 28, Issue 3 (2021) P3.7 • View Publication • BIB
One of the simplest methods of generating a random graph with a given degree sequence is provided by the Monte Carlo Markov Chain method using switches. The switch Markov chain converges to the uniform distribution, but generally the rate of convergence is not known. After a number of results concerning various degree sequences, rapid mixing was established for so-called $P$-stable degree sequences (including that of directed graphs), which covers every previously known rapidly mixing region of degree sequences. In this paper we give a non-trivial family of degree sequences that are not $P$-stable and the switch Markov chain is still rapidly mixing on them. This family has an intimate connection to Tyshkevich-decompositions and strong stability as well.

New expressions for order polynomials and chromatic polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a simple graph with $V=\{1,2,\cdots,n\}$ and $χ(G,x)$ be its chromatic polynomial. For an ordering $π=(v_1,v_2,\cdots,v_n)$ of elements of $V$, let $δ_G(π)$ be the number of $i$'s, where $1\le i\le n-1$, with either $v_i<v_{i+1}$ or $v_iv_{i+1}\in E$. Let ${\cal W}(G)$ be the set of subsets $\{a,b,c\}$ of $V$, where $a<b<c$, which induces a subgraph with $ac$ as its only edge. We show that ${\cal W}(G)=\emptyset$ if and only if $(-1)^nχ(G,-x)=\sum_π {x+δ_G(π)\choose n}$, where the sum runs over all $n!$ orderings $π$ of $V$. To prove this result, we establish an analogous result on order polynomials of posets and apply Stanley's work on the relation between chromatic polynomials and order polynomials.

Frieze patterns with coefficients
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma 8 (2020) e17 • View Publication • BIB
Frieze patterns, as introduced by Coxeter in the 1970's, are closely related to cluster algebras without coefficients. A suitable generalization of frieze patterns, linked to cluster algebras with coefficients, has only briefly appeared in an unpublished manuscript by Propp. In this paper we study these frieze patterns with coefficients systematically and prove various fundamental results, generalizing classic results for frieze patterns. As a consequence we see how frieze patterns with coefficients can be obtained from classic frieze patterns by cutting out subpolygons from the triangulated polygons associated to classic Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns. We address the question of which frieze patterns with coefficients can be obtained in this way and solve this problem completely for triangles. Finally, we prove a finiteness result for frieze patterns with coefficients by showing that for a given boundary sequence there are only finitely many (non-zero) frieze patterns with coefficients with entries in a discrete subset of the complex numbers.

Sticky matroids and convolution
Motivated by the characterization of the lattice of cyclic flats of a matroid, the convolution of a ranked lattice and a discrete measure is defined, generalizing polymatroid convolution. Using the convolution technique we prove that if a matroid has a non-principal modular cut then it is not sticky. A similar statement for matroids has been proved in [8] using different technique.

Minimum firing times of firing squad synchronization problems for paths in grid spaces
We consider the firing squad synchronization problems for paths in the two and the three-dimensional grid spaces. Minimal-time solutions of these problems are not known and are unlikely to exist. However, at present we have no proofs of their nonexistence. In this paper we show one result that suggests what type of study is necessary in order to prove their nonexistence.

Furstenberg sets in finite fields: Explaining and improving the Ellenberg-Erman proof
Published • View Publication • BIB
A $(k,m)$-Furstenberg set is a subset $S \subset \mathbb{F}_q^n$ with the property that each $k$-dimensional subspace of $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ can be translated so that it intersects $S$ in at least $m$ points. Ellenberg and Erman proved that $(k,m)$-Furstenberg sets must have size at least $C_{n,k}m^{n/k}$, where $C_{n,k}$ is a constant depending only $n$ and $k$. In this paper, we adopt the same proof strategy as Ellenberg and Erman, but use more elementary techniques than their scheme-theoretic method. By modifying certain parts of the argument, we obtain an improved bound on $C_{n,k}$, and our improved bound is nearly optimal for an algebraic generalization the main combinatorial result. We also extend our analysis to give lower bounds for sets that have large intersection with shifts of a specific family of higher-degree co-dimension $n-k$ varieties, instead of just co-dimension $n-k$ subspaces.

Free flags over local rings and powering of high dimensional expanders
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 2022:19, October 2022, Pages 14741-14769 • View Publication • BIB
Powering the adjacency matrix of an expander graph results in a better expander of higher degree. In this paper we seek an analogue operation for high-dimensional expanders. We show that the naive approach to powering does not preserve high-dimensional expansion, and define a new power operation, using geodesic walks on quotients of Bruhat-Tits buildings. Applying this operation results in high-dimensional expanders of higher degrees. The crux of the proof is a combinatorial study of flags of free modules over finite local rings. Their geometry describes links in the power complex, and showing that they are excellent expanders implies high dimensional expansion for the power-complex by Garland's local-to-global technique. As an application, we use our power operation to obtain new efficient double samplers.

Cosmological Polytopes and the Wavefuncton of the Universe for Light States
We extend the investigation of the structure of the late-time wavefunction of the universe to a class of toy models of scalars with time-dependent masses and polynomial couplings, which contains general massive scalars in FRW cosmologies. We associate a universal integrand to each Feynman diagram contributing to the wavefunction of the universe. For certain (light) masses, such an integrand satisfies recursion relations involving differential operators, connecting states with different masses and having, as a seed, the massless scalar (which describes a conformally coupled scalar as a special case). We show that it is a degenerate limit of the canonical form of a generalisation of the cosmological polytopes describing the wavefunction for massless scalars. Intriguingly, the flat-space scattering amplitude appears as a higher codimension face: it is encoding the leading term in the Laurent expansion as the total energy is taken to zero, with the codimension of the face providing the order of the total energy pole. The same connection between the other faces and the Laurent expansion coefficients holds for the other singularities of the wavefunction of the universe, all of them connectable to flat-space processes. As the degenerate limit is taken, some of the singularities of the canonical form of the polytope collapse onto each other generating higher order poles. Finally, we consider the mass as a perturbative coupling, showing that the contribution to the wavefunction coming from graphs with mass two-point couplings can be identified with a degenerate limit of the canonical form of the cosmological polytope, if the perturbative expansion is done around the conformally coupled state; or as double degenerate limit of the canonical form of the extension of the cosmological polytopes introduced in the present paper, if the perturbative expansion is done around minimally coupled states.

Chromatic number is Ramsey distinguishing
Published in J. Graph Theory, 99: 152-161 (2022) • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is Ramsey for a graph $H$ if every colouring of the edges of $G$ in two colours contains a monochromatic copy of $H$. Two graphs $H_1$ and $H_2$ are Ramsey equivalent if any graph $G$ is Ramsey for $H_1$ if and only if it is Ramsey for $H_2$. A graph parameter $s$ is Ramsey distinguishing if $s(H_1)\neq s(H_2)$ implies that $H_1$ and $H_2$ are not Ramsey equivalent. In this paper we show that the chromatic number is a Ramsey distinguishing parameter. We also extend this to the multi-colour case and use a similar idea to find another graph parameter which is Ramsey distinguishing.

Lucas atoms
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given two variables $s$ and $t$, the associated sequence of Lucas polynomials is defined inductively by $\{0\}=0$, $\{1\}=1$, and $\{n\}=s\{n-1\}+t\{n-2\}$ for $n\ge2$. An integer (e.g., a Catalan number) defined by an expression of the form $\prod_i n_i/\prod_j k_j$ has a Lucas analogue obtained by replacing each factor with the corresponding Lucas polynomial. There has been interest in deciding when such expressions, which are a priori only rational functions, are actually polynomials in $s,t$. The approaches so far have been combinatorial. We introduce a powerful algebraic method for answering this question by factoring $\{n\}=\prod_{d|n} P_d(s,t)$, where we call the polynomials $P_d(s,t)$ Lucas atoms. This permits us to show that the Lucas analogues of the Fuss-Catalan and Fuss-Narayana numbers for all irreducible Coxeter groups are polynomials in $s,t$. Using gamma expansions, a technique which has recently become popular in combinatorics and geometry, one can show that the Lucas atoms have a close relationship with cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_d(q)$. Certain results about the $Φ_d(q)$ can then be lifted to Lucas atoms. In particular, one can prove analogues of theorems of Gauss and Lucas, deduce reduction formulas, and evaluate the $P_d(s,t)$ at various specific values of the variables.
The Signed Monodromy Group of an Adinkra
Published in Ann.Inst.H.Poincare D Comb.Phys.Interact. 10 (2022) 1, 1-30 • View Publication • BIB
An ordering of colours in an Adinkra leads to an embedding of this Adinkra into a Riemann surface $X$, and a branched covering map $β_X:X\to\mathbb{CP}^1$. This paper shows how the dashing of edges in an Adinkra determines a signed permutation version of the monodromy group, and shows that it is isomorphic to a Salingaros Vee group.

A note about online nonrepetitive coloring $k$-trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that it is always possible to color online nonrepetitively any (partial) $k$-tree (that is, graphs with tree-width at most $k$) with $4^k$ colors. This implies that it is always possible to color online nonrepetitively cycles, trees and series-parallel graphs with $16$ colors. Our results generalize the respective (offline) nonrepetitive coloring results.
