A graph-theoretic approach to Wilf's conjecture

Let S $\subseteq$ N be a numerical semigroup with multiplicity m = min(S \ {0}) and conductor c = max(N \ S) + 1. Let P be the set of primitive elements of S, and let L be the set of elements of S which are smaller than c. A longstand-ing open question by Wilf in 1978 asks whether the inequality |P||L| $\ge$ c always holds. Among many partial results, Wilf's conjecture has been shown to hold in case |P| $\ge$ m/2 by Sammartano in 2012. Using graph theory in an essential way, we extend the verification of Wilf's conjecture to the case |P| $\ge$ m/3. This case covers more than 99.999% of numerical semigroups of genus g $\le$ 45.
On Domination Coloring in Graphs
A domination coloring of a graph $G$ is a proper vertex coloring of $G$ such that each vertex of $G$ dominates at least one color class, and each color class is dominated by at least one vertex. The minimum number of colors among all domination colorings is called the domination chromatic number, denoted by $χ_{dd}(G)$. In this paper, we study the complexity of this problem by proving its NP-Completeness for arbitrary graphs, and give general bounds and characterizations on several classes of graphs. We also show the relation between dominator chromatic number $χ_{d}(G)$, dominated chromatic number $χ_{dom}(G)$, chromatic number $χ(G)$, and domination number $γ(G)$. We present several results on graphs with $χ_{dd}(G)=χ(G)$.

In this paper, we describe an elementary method for counting the number of non-isomorphic algebras of a fixed dimension over a given finite field. We show how this method works for the explicit example of $2$-dimensional algebras over the field $\mathbb{F}_{2}$.
Correlation for permutations

In this note we investigate correlation inequalities for `up-sets' of permutations, in the spirit of the Harris--Kleitman inequality. We focus on two well-studied partial orders on $S_n$, giving rise to differing notions of up-sets. Our first result shows that, under the strong Bruhat order on $S_n$, up-sets are positively correlated (in the Harris--Kleitman sense). Thus, for example, for a (uniformly) random permutation $π$, the event that no point is displaced by more than a fixed distance $d$ and the event that $π$ is the product of at most $k$ adjacent transpositions are positively correlated. In contrast, under the weak Bruhat order we show that this completely fails: surprisingly, there are two up-sets each of measure $1/2$ whose intersection has arbitrarily small measure.
We also prove analogous correlation results for a class of non-uniform measures, which includes the Mallows measures. Some applications and open problems are discussed.

We analyze a dynamic random undirected graph in which newly added vertices are connected to those already present in the graph either using, with probability $p$, an anti-preferential attachment mechanism or, with probability $1-p$, a preferential attachment mechanism. We derive the asymptotic degree distribution in the general case and study the asymptotic behaviour of the expected degree process in the general and that of the degree process in the pure anti-preferential attachment case. Degree homogenization mainly affects convergence rates for the former case and also the limiting degree distribution in the latter.
Coefficients of Wronskian Hermite polynomials

We study Wronskians of Hermite polynomials labelled by partitions and use the combinatorial concepts of cores and quotients to derive explicit expressions for their coefficients. These coefficients can be expressed in terms of the characters of irreducible representations of the symmetric group, and also in terms of hook lengths. Further, we derive the asymptotic behaviour of the Wronskian Hermite polynomials when the length of the core tends to infinity, while fixing the quotient. Via this combinatorial setting, we obtain in a natural way the generalization of the correspondence between Hermite and Laguerre polynomials to Wronskian Hermite polynomials and Wronskians involving Laguerre polynomials. Lastly, we generalize most of our results to polynomials that have zeros on the $p$-star.
Maximum Bipartite Subgraph of Geometric Intersection Graphs

We study the Maximum Bipartite Subgraph (MBS) problem, which is defined as follows. Given a set $S$ of $n$ geometric objects in the plane, we want to compute a maximum-size subset $S'\subseteq S$ such that the intersection graph of the objects in $S'$ is bipartite. We first give a simple $O(n)$-time algorithm that solves the MBS problem on a set of $n$ intervals. We also give an $O(n^2)$-time algorithm that computes a near-optimal solution for the problem on circular-arc graphs. We show that the MBS problem is NP-hard on geometric graphs for which the maximum independent set is NP-hard (hence, it is NP-hard even on unit squares and unit disks). On the other hand, we give a PTAS for the problem on unit squares and unit disks. Moreover, we show fast approximation algorithms with small-constant factors for the problem on unit squares, unit disks and unit-height rectangles. Finally, we study a closely related geometric problem, called Maximum Triangle-free Subgraph (TFS), where the objective is the same as that of MBS except the intersection graph induced by the set $S'$ needs to be triangle-free only (instead of being bipartite).

We show that for every fixed $\ell\in\mathbb{N}$, the set of $n$ with $n^\ell|\binom{2n}{n}$ has a positive asymptotic density $c_\ell$, and we give an asymptotic formula for $c_\ell$ as $\ell\to \infty$. We also show that $\# \{n\le x, (n,\binom{2n}{n})=1 \} \sim cx/\log x$ for some constant $c$. One novelty is a method to capture the effect of large prime factors of integers in general sequences.
On the Non-Adaptive Zero-Error Capacity of the Discrete Memoryless Two-Way Channel

We study the problem of communicating over a discrete memoryless two-way channel using non-adaptive schemes, under a zero probability of error criterion. We derive single-letter inner and outer bounds for the zero-error capacity region, based on random coding, linear programming, linear codes, and the asymptotic spectrum of graphs. Among others, we provide a single-letter outer bound based on a combination of Shannon's vanishing-error capacity region and a two-way analogue of the linear programming bound for point-to-point channels, which in contrast to the one-way case, is generally better than both. Moreover, we establish an outer bound for the zero-error capacity region of a two-way channel via the asymptotic spectrum of graphs and show that this bound could be achieved for certain cases.
Tilings of hexagons with a removed triad of bowties

In this paper we consider arbitrary hexagons on the triangular lattice with three arbitrary bowtie-shaped holes, whose centers form an equilateral triangle. The number of lozenge tilings of such general regions is not expected --- and indeed is not --- given by a simple product formula. However, when considering a certain natural normalized counterpart of any such region, we prove that the ratio between the number of tilings of the original and the number of tilings of the normalized region is given by a simple, conceptual product formula. Several seemingly unrelated previous results from the literature --- including Lai's formula for hexagons with three dents and Ciucu and Krattenthaler's formula for hexagons with a removed shamrock --- follow as immediate consequences of our result.
Edge-fault-tolerant strong Menger edge connectivity of bubble-sort star graphs

The connectivity and edge connectivity of interconnection network determine the fault tolerance of the network. An interconnection network is usually viewed as a connected graph, where vertex corresponds processor and edge corresponds link between two distinct processors. Given a connected graph $G$ with vertex set $V(G)$ and edge set $E(G)$, if for any two distinct vertices $u,v\in V(G)$, there exist $\min\{d_G(u),d_G(v)\}$ edge-disjoint paths between $u$ and $v$, then $G$ is strongly Menger edge connected. Let $m$ be an integer with $m\geq1$. If $G-F_e$ remains strongly Menger edge connected for any $F_e\subseteq E(G)$ with $|F_e|\leq m$, then $G$ is $m$-edge-fault-tolerant strongly Menger edge connected. If $G-F_e$ is strongly Menger edge connected for any $F_e\subseteq E(G)$ with $|F_e|\leq m$ and $δ(G-F_e)\geq2$, then $G$ is $m$-conditional edge-fault-tolerant strongly Menger edge connected. In this paper, we consider the $n$-dimensional bubble-sort star graph $BS_n$. We show that $BS_n$ is $(2n-5)$-edge-fault-tolerant strongly Menger edge connected for $n\geq3$ and $(6n-17)$-conditional edge-fault-tolerant strongly Menger edge connected for $n\geq4$. Moreover, we give some examples to show that our results are optimal.
Fractional Isomorphism of Graphons
We work out the theory of fractional isomorphism of graphons as a generalization to the classical theory of fractional isomorphism of finite graphs. The generalization is given in terms of homomorphism densities of finite trees and it is characterized in terms of distributions on iterated degree measures, Markov operators, weak isomorphism of a conditional expectation with respect to invariant sub-$σ$-algebras and isomorphism of certain quotients of given graphons.
High symmetric n-polygons
The present article includes the enumeration of $n$-polygons with a certain symmetry property: For an even number $n$ of vertices, we count the $n$-polygons with $\frac{n}{2}$ symmetry axes. In addition, if $n$ is a power of 2, we show the relation to the perfect numbers.
Further Results on the Pseudo-$L_{g}(s)$ Association Scheme with $g\geq 3$, $s\geq g+2$
It is inevitable that the $L_{g}(s)$ association scheme with $g\geq 3, s\geq g+2$ is a pseudo-$L_{g}(s)$ association scheme. On the contrary, although $s^2$ treatments of the pseudo-$L_{g}(s)$ association scheme can form one $L_{g}(s)$ association scheme, it is not always an $L_{g}(s)$ association scheme. Mainly because the set of cardinality $s$, which contains two first-associates treatments of the pseudo-$L_{g}(s)$ association scheme, is non-unique. Whether the order $s$ of a Latin square $\mathbf{L}$ is a prime power or not, the paper proposes two new conditions in order to extend a $POL(s,w)$ containing $\mathbf{L}$. It has been known that a $POL(s,w)$ can be extended to a $POL(s,s-1)$ so long as Bruck's \cite{brh} condition $s\geq \frac{(s-1-w)^4-2(s-1-w)^3+2(s-1-w)^2+(s-1-w)}{2}$ is satisfied, Bruck's condition will be completely improved through utilizing six properties of the $L_{w+2}(s)$ association scheme in this paper. Several examples are given to elucidate the application of our results.

The minimum status of a graph is the minimum of statuses of all vertices of this graph. We give a sharp upper bound for the minimum status of a connected graph with fixed order and matching number (domination number, respectively), and characterize the unique trees achieving the bound. We also determine the unique tree such that its minimum status is as small as possible when order and matching number (domination number, respectively) are fixed.
Counting weighted independent sets beyond the permanent

Jerrum, Sinclair and Vigoda (2004) showed that the permanent of any square matrix can be estimated in polynomial time. This computation can be viewed as approximating the partition function of edge-weighted matchings in a bipartite graph. Equivalently, this may be viewed as approximating the partition function of vertex-weighted independent sets in the line graph of a bipartite graph. Line graphs of bipartite graphs are perfect graphs, and are known to be precisely the class of (claw, diamond, odd hole)-free graphs. So how far does the result of Jerrum, Sinclair and Vigoda extend? We first show that it extends to (claw, odd hole)-free graphs, and then show that it extends to the even larger class of (fork, odd hole)-free graphs. Our techniques are based on graph decompositions, which have been the focus of much recent work in structural graph theory, and on structural results of Chvatal and Sbihi (1988), Maffray and Reed (1999) and Lozin and Milanic (2008).
Some results on the Ryser design conjecture-II

A Ryser design $\mathcal{D}$ on $v$ points is a collection of $v$ proper subsets (called blocks) of a point-set with $v$ points satisfying (i) every two blocks intersect each other in $λ$ points for a fixed $λ< v$ (ii) there are at least two block sizes. A design $\mathcal{D}$ is called a symmetric design, if all the blocks of $\mathcal{D}$ have the same size
(or equivalently, every point has the same replication number) and every two blocks intersect each other in $λ$ points. The only known construction of a Ryser design is via block complementation of a symmetric design also known as the Ryser-Woodall complementation method. Such a Ryser design is called a Ryser design of Type-1. The Ryser-Woodall conjecture states: "every Ryser design is of Type-1".
Main results of the present article are the following. An expression for the inverse of the incidence matrix $\mathsf{A}$ of a Ryser design is obtained. A necessary condition for the design to be of Type-1 is obtained. A well known conjecture states that, for a Ryser design on \textit{v} points $\mbox{ }4λ-1\leq v\leqλ^2+λ+1$.
A partial support for this conjecture is obtained. Finally a special case of Ryser designs with two block sizes is shown to be of Type-1.
(GL_k x S_n)-modules and nabla of hook-indexed Schur functions
The aim of this paper is to describe structural properties of spaces of diagonal rectangular harmonic polynomials in several sets (say $k$) of $n$ variables, both as $GL_k$-modules and $S_n$-modules. We construct explicit such modules associated to any hook shape partitions. For the two sets of variables case, we conjecture that the associated graded Frobenius characteristic corresponds to the effect of the operator Nabla on the corresponding hook-indexed Schur function, up to a usual renormalization. We prove identities that give indirect support to this conjecture, and show that its restriction to one set of variables holds. We further give indications on how the several sets context gives a better understanding of questions regarding the structures of these modules and the links between them.
When lattice cubes meet affine subspaces: a short note

In this paper, we consider spaces whose Higson coronae are indecomposable continua. We show that for a non-compact proper metric space $X$ which is coarsely geodesic and has coarse bounded geometry, the Higson corona of $X$ is an indecomposable continuum if and only if $X$ is coarsely equivalent to the space of natural numbers. Then we give characterizations of finitely generated groups that have one or two ends by decomposability/indecomposability of the components of their Higson coronae. we characterize it as a group whose Higson corona is a topological sum of two indecomposable continua.
