A Note on Graphs of Dichromatic Number 2
Published • View Publication • BIB
Neumann-Lara and Škrekovski conjectured that every planar digraph is $2$-colourable. We show that this conjecture is equivalent to the more general statement that all oriented $K_5$-minor-free graphs are $2$-colourable.
Some remarks on the midrange crossing constant
Published • View Publication • BIB
We verify an upper bound of Pach and Tóth [Combinatorica 17(1997), 427-439, Discrete and Computational Geometry 36(2006), 527-552] on the midrange crossing constant. Details of their $\frac{8}{9π^2}$ upper bound have not been available. Our verification is different from their method and hinges on a result of Moon [J. Soc. Indust. Appl. Math. 13(1965), 506-510]. As Moon's result is optimal, we raise the question whether the midrange crossing constant is $\frac{8}{9π^2}$.

Dimension is polynomial in height for posets with planar cover graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that height $h$ posets that have planar cover graphs have dimension $\mathcal{O}(h^6)$. Previously, the best upper bound was $2^{\mathcal{O}(h^3)}$. Planarity plays a key role in our arguments, since there are posets such that (1) dimension is exponential in height and (2) the cover graph excludes $K_5$ as a minor.

Proper-walk connection number of graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
This paper studies the problem of proper-walk connection number: given an undirected connected graph, our aim is to colour its edges with as few colours as possible so that there exists a properly coloured walk between every pair of vertices of the graph i.e. a walk that does not use consecutively two edges of the same colour. The problem was already solved on several classes of graphs but still open in the general case. We establish that the problem can always be solved in polynomial time in the size of the graph and we provide a characterization of the graphs that can be properly connected with $k$ colours for every possible value of $k$.
Recurrence along directions in multidimensional words
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we introduce and study new notions of uniform recurrence in multidimensional words. A $d$-dimensional word is called \emph{uniformly recurrent} if for all $(s_1,\ldots,s_d)\in\mathbb{N}^d$ there exists $n\in\mathbb{N}$ such that each block of size $(n,\ldots,n)$ contains the prefix of size $(s_1,\ldots,s_d)$. We are interested in a modification of this property. Namely, we ask that for each rational direction $(q_1,\ldots,q_d)$, each rectangular prefix occurs along this direction in positions $\ell(q_1,\ldots,q_d)$ with bounded gaps. Such words are called \emph{uniformly recurrent along all directions}. We provide several constructions of multidimensional words satisfying this condition, and more generally, a series of four increasingly stronger conditions. In particular, we study the uniform recurrence along directions of multidimentional rotation words and of fixed points of square morphisms.

Maker-Breaker Percolation Games II: Escaping to Infinity
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Λ$ be an infinite connected graph, and let $v_0$ be a vertex of $Λ$. We consider the following positional game. Two players, Maker and Breaker, play in alternating turns. Initially all edges of $Λ$ are marked as unsafe. On each of her turns, Maker marks $p$ unsafe edges as safe, while on each of his turns Breaker takes $q$ unsafe edges and deletes them from the graph. Breaker wins if at any time in the game the component containing $v_0$ becomes finite. Otherwise if Maker is able to ensure that $v_0$ remains in an infinite component indefinitely, then we say she has a winning strategy. This game can be thought of as a variant of the celebrated Shannon switching game. Given $(p,q)$ and $(Λ, v_0)$, we would like to know: which of the two players has a winning strategy? Our main result in this paper establishes that when $Λ= \mathbb{Z}^2$ and $v_0$ is any vertex, Maker has a winning strategy whenever $p\geq 2q$, while Breaker has a winning strategy whenever $2p\leq q$. In addition, we completely determine which of the two players has a winning strategy for every pair $(p,q)$ when $Λ$ is an infinite $d$-regular tree. Finally, we give some results for general graphs and lattices and pose some open problems.

Kissing number in hyperbolic space
This paper provides upper and lower bounds on the kissing number of congruent radius $r > 0$ spheres in $\mathbb{H}^n$, for $n\geq 2$. For that purpose, the kissing number is replaced by the kissing function $κ(n, r)$ which depends on the radius $r$. After we obtain some theoretical lower and upper bounds for $κ(n, r)$, we study their asymptotic behaviour and show, in particular, that $\lim_{r\to \infty} \frac{\log κ(n,r)}{r} = n-1$. Finally, we compare them with the numeric upper bounds obtained by solving a suitable semidefinite program.

On the number of resolvable Steiner triple systems of small 3-rank
Published in Des. Codes Cryptogr. 88(6) 2020, 1037-1046 • View Publication • BIB
In a recent work, Jungnickel, Magliveras, Tonchev, and Wassermann derived an overexponential lower bound on the number of nonisomorphic resolvable Steiner triple systems (STS) of order $v$, where $v=3^k$, and $3$-rank $v-k$. We develop an approach to generalize this bound and estimate the number of isomorphism classes of STS$(v)$ of rank $v-k-1$ for an arbitrary $v$ of form $3^kT$.

The valley version of the Extended Delta Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Shuffle Theorem of Carlsson and Mellit gives a combinatorial expression for the bigraded Frobenius characteristic of the ring of diagonal harmonics, and the Delta Conjecture of Haglund, Remmel and the second author provides two generalizations of the Shuffle Theorem to the delta operator expression $Δ'_{e_k} e_n$. Haglund et al. also propose the Extended Delta Conjecture for the delta operator expression $Δ'_{e_k} Δ_{h_r}e_n$, which is analogous to the rise version of the Delta Conjecture. Recently, D'Adderio, Iraci and Wyngaerd proved the rise version of the Extended Delta Conjecture at the case when $t=0$. In this paper, we propose a new valley version of the Extended Delta Conjecture. Then, we work on the combinatorics of extended ordered multiset partitions to prove that the two conjectures for $Δ'_{e_k} Δ_{h_r}e_n$ are equivalent when $t$ or $q$ equals 0, thus proving the valley version of the Extended Delta Conjecture when $t$ or $q$ equals 0.

A Scrapbook of Inadmissible Line Complexes For the X-ray Transform
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a finite field model of the X-ray transform that integrates functions along lines in dimension 3, within the context of finite fields. The admissibility problem asks for minimal sets of lines for which the restricted transform is invertible. Graph theoretic conditions are known which characterize admissible collections of lines, and these have been counted using a brute force computer program. Here we perform the count by hand and, at the same time, produce a detailed illustration of the possible structures of inadmissible complexes. The resulting scrapbook may be of interest in an artificial intelligence approach to enumerating and illustrating admissible complexes in arbitrary dimensions (arbitrarily large ambient spaces, with transforms integrating over subspaces of arbitrary dimensions.)

Generating Normal Networks via Leaf Insertion and Nearest Neighbor Interchange
Published in RECOMBCG, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
Galled trees are studied as a recombination model in theoretic population genetics. This class of phylogenetic networks has been generalized to tree-child networks, normal networks and tree-based networks by relaxing a structural condition. Although these networks are simple, their topological structures have yet to be fully understood. It is well-known that all phylogenetic trees on $n$ taxa can be generated by the insertion of the $n$-th taxa to each edge of all the phylogenetic trees on $n-1$ taxa. We prove that all tree-child networks with $k$ reticulate nodes on $n$ taxa can be uniquely generated via three operations from all the tree-child networks with $k-1$ or $k$ reticulate nodes on $n-1$ taxa . An application of this result is found in counting tree-child networks and normal networks. In particular, a simple formula is given for the number of rooted phylogenetic networks with one reticulate node.

On the equational graphs over finite fields
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we generalize the notion of functional graph. Specifically, given an equation $E(X,Y) = 0$ with variables $X$ and $Y$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic, we define a digraph by choosing the elements in $\mathbb{F}_q$ as vertices and drawing an edge from $x$ to $y$ if and only if $E(x,y)=0$. We call this graph as equational graph. In this paper, we study the equational graphs when choosing $E(X,Y) = (Y^2 - f(X))(λY^2 - f(X))$ with $f(X)$ a polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $λ$ a non-square element in $\mathbb{F}_q$. We show that if $f$ is a permutation polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$, then every connected component of the graph has a Hamiltonian cycle. Moreover, these Hamiltonian cycles can be used to construct balancing binary sequences. By making computations for permutation polynomials $f$ of low degree, it appears that almost all these graphs are strongly connected, and there are many Hamiltonian cycles in such a graph if it is connected.
Access Balancing in Storage Systems by Labeling Partial Steiner Systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Storage architectures ranging from minimum bandwidth regenerating encoded distributed storage systems to declustered-parity RAIDs can be designed using dense partial Steiner systems in order to support fast reads, writes, and recovery of failed storage units. In order to ensure good performance, popularities of the data items should be taken into account and the frequencies of accesses to the storage units made as uniform as possible. A proposed combinatorial model ranks items by popularity and assigns data items to elements in a dense partial Steiner system so that the sums of ranks of the elements in each block are as equal as possible. By developing necessary conditions in terms of independent sets, we demonstrate that certain Steiner systems must have a much larger difference between the largest and smallest block sums than is dictated by an elementary lower bound. In contrast, we also show that certain dense partial $S(t, t+1, v)$ designs can be labeled to realize the elementary lower bound. Furthermore, we prove that for every admissible order $v$, there is a Steiner triple system $(S(2, 3, v))$ whose largest difference in block sums is within an additive constant of the lower bound.
Existence of quantum symmetries for graphs on up to seven vertices: a computer based approach
Published • View Publication • BIB
The symmetries of a finite graph are described by its automorphism group; in the setting of Woronowicz's quantum groups, a notion of a quantum automorphism group has been defined by Banica capturing the quantum symmetries of the graph. In general, there are more quantum symmetries than symmetries and it is a non-trivial task to determine when this is the case for a given graph: The question is whether or not the algebra associated to the quantum automorphism group is commutative. We use Gröbner base computations in order to tackle this problem; the implementation uses GAP and the SINGULAR package LETTERPLACE. We determine the existence of quantum symmetries for all connected, undirected graphs without multiple edges and without self-edges, for up to seven vertices. As an outcome, we infer within our regime that a classical automorphism group of order one or two is an obstruction for the existence of quantum symmetries.

On the cover ideals of chordal graphs
Published in Turkish J. Math. 43 (2019), no. 5, 2405-2414 • View Publication • BIB
The independence complex of a chordal graph is known to be shellable due to a result of Van Tuyl and Villarreal. This is equivalent to the fact that cover ideal of a chordal graph has linear quotients. We use this result to obtain recursive formulas for the Betti numbers of cover ideals of chordal graphs. Also, we give a new proof of their result which yields different shellings of the independence complex.

On extremal results of multiplicative Zagreb indices of trees with given distance $k$-domination number
Published • View Publication • BIB
The first multiplicative Zagreb index $Π_1$ of a graph $G$ is the product of the square of every vertex degree, while the second multiplicative Zagreb index $Π_2$ is the product of the products of degrees of pairs of adjacent vertices. In this paper, we give sharp lower bound for $Π_1$ and upper bound for $Π_2$ of trees with given distance $k$-domination number, and characterize those trees attaining the bounds.

On graphs with equal total domination and Grundy total domination number
A sequence $(v_1,\ldots ,v_k)$ of vertices in a graph $G$ without isolated vertices is called a total dominating sequence if every vertex $v_i$ in the sequence totally dominates at least one vertex that was not totally dominated by $\{v_1,\ldots , v_{i-1}\}$ and $\{v_1,\ldots ,v_k\}$ is a total dominating set of $G$. The length of a shortest such sequence is the total domination number of G ($γ_t(G)$), while the length of a longest such sequence is the Grundy total domination number of $G$ ($γ_{gr}^t(G)$). In this paper we study graphs with equal total and Grundy total domination number. We characterize bipartite graphs with both total and Grundy total domination number equal to 4, and show that there is no connected chordal graph $G$ with $γ_t(G)=γ_{gr}^t(G)=4$. The main result of the paper is a characterization of regular bipartite graphs with $γ_t(G)=γ_{gr}^t(G)=6$ proved by establishing a surprising correspondence between existence of such graphs and a classical but still open problem of the existence of certain finite projective planes.
