Some Problems and Algorithms Related to the Weight Order Relation on the $n$-dimensional Boolean Cube
Published • View Publication • BIB
The problem "Given a Boolean function $f$ of $n$ variables by its truth table vector. Find (if exists) a vector $α\in \{0,1\}^n$ of maximal (or minimal) weight, such that $f(α)= 1$." is considered here. It is closely related to the problem of fast computing the algebraic degree of Boolean functions. It is an important cryptographic parameter used in the design of S-boxes in modern block ciphers, PRNGs in stream ciphers, at Reed-Muller codes, etc. To find effective solutions to this problem we explore the orders of the vectors of the $n$-dimensional Boolean cube $\{0,1\}^n$ in accordance with their weights. The notion of "$k$-th layer" of $\{0,1\}^n$ is involved in the definition and examination of the "weight order" relation. It is compared with the known relation "precedes". Several enumeration problems concerning these relations are solved and the corresponding comments were added to 3 sequences in the On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). One special order (among the numerous weight orders) is defined and examined in detail. The lexicographic order is a second criterion for an ordinance of the vectors of equal weights. So a total order called Weight-Lexicographic Order (WLO) is obtained. Two algorithms for generating the WLO sequence and two algorithms for generating the characteristic vectors of the layers are proposed. Their results were used in creating 2 new sequences: A294648 and A305860 in the OEIS. Two algorithms for solving the problem considered are developed--the first one works in a byte-wise manner and uses the WLO sequence, and the second one works in a bitwise manner and uses the characteristic vector as masks. The experimental results after many tests confirm the efficiency of these algorithms. Some other applications of the obtained algorithms are also discussed--for example, when representing, generating and ranking other combinatorial objects.

Generating subgraphs in chordal graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same cardinality. Assume that a weight function $w$ is defined on its vertices. Then $G$ is $w$-well-covered if all maximal independent sets are of the same weight. For every graph $G$, the set of weight functions $w$ such that $G$ is $w$-well-covered is a vector space, denoted $WCW(G)$. Let $B$ be a complete bipartite induced subgraph of $G$ on vertex sets of bipartition $B_{X}$ and $B_{Y}$. Then $B$ is generating if there exists an independent set $S$ such that $S \cup B_{X}$ and $S \cup B_{Y}$ are both maximal independent sets of $G$. In the restricted case that a generating subgraph $B$ is isomorphic to $K_{1,1}$, the unique edge in $B$ is called a relating edge. Generating subgraphs play an important role in finding $WCW(G)$. Deciding whether an input graph $G$ is well-covered is co-NP-complete. Hence, finding $WCW(G)$ is co-NP-hard. Deciding whether an edge is relating is NP-complete. Therefore, deciding whether a subgraph is generating is NP-complete as well. A graph is chordal if every induced cycle is a triangle. It is known that finding $WCW(G)$ can be done polynomially in the restricted case that $G$ is chordal. Thus recognizing well-covered chordal graphs is a polynomial problem. We present a polynomial algorithm for recognizing relating edges and generating subgraphs in chordal graphs.

Recognizing generating subgraphs revisited
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is well-covered if all its maximal independent sets are of the same cardinality. Assume that a weight function $w$ is defined on its vertices. Then $G$ is $w$-well-covered if all maximal independent sets are of the same weight. For every graph $G$, the set of weight functions $w$ such that $G$ is $w$-well-covered is a vector space, denoted as $WCW(G).$ Deciding whether an input graph $G$ is well-covered is co-NP-complete. Therefore, finding $WCW(G)$ is co-NP-hard. A generating subgraph of a graph $G$ is an induced complete bipartite subgraph $B$ of $G$ on vertex sets of bipartition $B_{X}$ and $B_{Y}$, such that each of $S \cup B_{X}$ and $S \cup B_{Y}$ is a maximal independent set of $G$, for some independent set $S$. If $B$ is generating, then $w(B_{X})=w(B_{Y})$ for every weight function $w \in WCW(G)$. Therefore, generating subgraphs play an important role in finding $WCW(G)$. The decision problem whether a subgraph of an input graph is generating is known to be NP-complete. In this article, we prove NP-completeness of the problem for graphs without cycles of length 3 and 5, and for bipartite graphs with girth at least 6. On the other and, we supply polynomial algorithms for recognizing generating subgraphs and finding $WCW(G)$, when the input graph is bipartite without cycles of length 6. We also present a polynomial algorithm which finds $WCW(G)$ when $G$ does not contain cycles of lengths 3, 4, 5, and 7.

Approximation Algorithms for Graph Burning
Published • View Publication • BIB
Numerous approaches study the vulnerability of networks against social contagion. Graph burning studies how fast a contagion, modeled as a set of fires, spreads in a graph. The burning process takes place in synchronous, discrete rounds. In each round, a fire breaks out at a vertex, and the fire spreads to all vertices that are adjacent to a burning vertex. The selection of vertices where fires start defines a schedule that indicates the number of rounds required to burn all vertices. Given a graph, the objective of an algorithm is to find a schedule that minimizes the number of rounds to burn graph. Finding the optimal schedule is known to be NP-hard, and the problem remains NP-hard when the graph is a tree or a set of disjoint paths. The only known algorithm is an approximation algorithm for disjoint paths, which has an approximation ratio of 1.5.

Anomaly Detection and Correction in Large Labeled Bipartite Graphs
Binary classification problems can be naturally modeled as bipartite graphs, where we attempt to classify right nodes based on their left adjacencies. We consider the case of labeled bipartite graphs in which some labels and edges are not trustworthy. Our goal is to reduce noise by identifying and fixing these labels and edges. We first propose a geometric technique for generating random graph instances with untrustworthy labels and analyze the resulting graph properties. We focus on generating graphs which reflect real-world data, where degree and label frequencies follow power law distributions. We review several algorithms for the problem of detection and correction, proposing novel extensions and making observations specific to the bipartite case. These algorithms range from math programming algorithms to discrete combinatorial algorithms to Bayesian approximation algorithms to machine learning algorithms. We compare the performance of all these algorithms using several metrics and, based on our observations, identify the relative strengths and weaknesses of each individual algorithm.
Symmetry Type Graphs on 4-Orbit maps
Published • View Publication • BIB
It is well known that there exist twenty two symmetry type graphs associated to 4-orbit maps. For this ones we give the feasible values taken by the degree of the vertices and the number appropriate of edges in the boundary of each face of the map, by introducing the concepts of vertex type graph, face type graph and characteristic system.

The largest graphs with given order and diameter: A simple proof
Published • View Publication • BIB
A consequence of Ore's classic theorem characterizing the maximal graphs with given order and diameter is a determination of the largest such graphs. We give a very short and simple proof of this smaller result, based on a well-known elementary observation.

Many $H$-copies in graphs with a forbidden tree
Published • View Publication • BIB
For graphs $H$ and $F$, let $\operatorname{ex}(n, H, F)$ be the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices. The study of this function, which generalises the well-studied Turán numbers of graphs, was initiated recently by Alon and Shikhelman. We show that if $F$ is a tree then $\operatorname{ex}(n, H, F) = Θ(n^r)$ for some integer $r = r(H, F)$, thus answering one of their questions.

On Word and Gómez Graphs and Their Automorphism Groups in the Degree Diameter Problem
One of the prominent areas of research in graph theory is the degree-diameter problem, in which we seek to determine how many vertices a graph may have when constrained to a given degree and diameter. Different variants of this problem are obtained by considering further restrictions on the graph, such as whether it is directed, undirected, mixed, vertex-transitive etc. The currently best known extremal constructions are the Gómez graphs, both when considered as directed and undirected. As the Gómez graphs are similar to the Faber-Moore-Chen graphs, we give a natural generalisation of their definition which we call word graphs. We then prove that the Gómez graphs are as large as possible word graphs for given degree and diameter. Further, we provide a test to determine the full automorphism group of a word graph, and apply it to the extremal directed Gómez graphs to settle the previously open question of when the Gómez graphs are also Cayley graphs. Finally, we conclude with a brief list of interesting related open problems.
New bounds on the maximum size of Sperner partition systems
Published in European J. Combin. 90 (2020), 103165, 18 pp • View Publication • BIB
An $(n,k)$-Sperner partition system is a collection of partitions of some $n$-set, each into $k$ nonempty classes, such that no class of any partition is a subset of a class of any other. The maximum number of partitions in an $(n,k)$-Sperner partition system is denoted $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$. In this paper we introduce a new construction for Sperner partition systems and use it to asymptotically determine $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$ in many cases as $\frac{n}{k}$ becomes large. We also give a slightly improved upper bound for $\mathrm{SP}(n,k)$ and exhibit an infinite family of parameter sets $(n,k)$ for which this bound is tight.

Inducibility of directed paths
Published in Discrete Mathematics 343 (2020) 112015 • View Publication • BIB
A long standing open problem in extremal graph theory is to describe all graphs that maximize the number of induced copies of a path on four vertices. The character of the problem changes in the setting of oriented graphs, and becomes more tractable. Here we resolve this problem in the setting of oriented graphs without transitive triangles.

Addition-deletion theorem for free hyperplane arrangements and combinatorics
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the theory of hyperplane arrangements, the most important and difficult problem is the combinatorial dependency of several properties. In this atricle, we prove that Terao's celebrated addition-deletion theorem for free arrangements is combinatorial, i.e., whether you can apply it depends only on the intersection lattice of arrangements. The proof is based on a classical technique. Since some parts are already completed recently, we prove the rest part, i.e., the combinatoriality of the addition theorem. As a corollary, we can define a new class of free arrangements called the additionally free arrangement of hyperplanes, which can be constructed from the empty arrangement by using only the addition theorem. Then we can show that Terao's conjecture is true in this class. As an application, we can show that every ideal-Shi arrangement is additionally free, implying that their freeness is combinatorial.

On complexity of cyclic coverings of graphs
By complexity of a finite graph we mean the number of spanning trees in the graph. The aim of the present paper is to give a new approach for counting complexity $τ(n)$ of cyclic $n$-fold coverings of a graph. We give an explicit analytic formula for $τ(n)$ in terms of Chebyshev polynomials and find its asymptotic behavior as $n\to\infty$ through the Mahler measure of the associated voltage polynomial. We also prove that $F(x)=\sum\limits_{n=1}^\inftyτ(n)x^n$ is a rational function with integer coefficients.

On rationality of generating function for the number of spanning trees in circulant graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $F(x)=\sum\limits_{n=1}^\inftyτ(n)x^n$ be the generating function for the number $τ(n)$ of spanning trees in the circulant graphs $C_{n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k).$ We show that $F(x)$ is a rational function with integer coefficients satisfying the property $F(x)=F(1/x).$ A similar result is also true for the circulant graphs of odd valency $C_{2n}(s_1,s_2,\ldots,s_k,n).$ We illustrate the obtained results by a series of examples.

Homomorphism bounds of signed bipartite $K_4$-minor-free graphs and edge-colorings of $2k$-regular $K_4$-minor-free multigraphs
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics 261:40-51, 2019 • View Publication • BIB
A signed graph $(G, Σ)$ is a graph $G$ and a subset $Σ$ of its edges which corresponds to an assignment of signs to the edges: edges in $Σ$ are negative while edges not in $Σ$ are positive. A closed walk of a signed graph is balanced if the product of the signs of its edges (repetitions included) is positive, and unbalanced otherwise. The unbalanced-girth of a signed graph is the length of a shortest unbalanced closed walk (if such a walk exists). A homomorphism of $(G,Σ)$ to $(H,Π)$ is a homomorphism of $G$ to $H$ which preserves the balance of closed walks. In this work, given a signed bipartite graph $(B, Π)$ of unbalanced-girth $2k$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $(B, Π)$ to admit a homomorphism from any signed bipartite graph of unbalanced-girth at least $2k$ whose underlying graph is $K_4$-minor-free. The condition can be checked in polynomial time with respect to the order of $B$. Let $SPC(2k)$ be the signed bipartite graph on vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_2^{2k-1}$ where vertices $u$ and $v$ are adjacent with a positive edge if their difference is in $\{e_1,e_2, \ldots, e_{2k-1}\}$ (where the $e_i$'s form the standard basis), and adjacent with a negative edge if their difference is $J$ (that is, the all-1 vector). As an application of our work, we prove that every signed bipartite $K_4$-minor-free graph of unbalanced-girth $2k$ admits a homomorphism to $SPC(2k)$. This supports a conjecture of Guenin claiming that every signed bipartite planar graph of unbalanced-girth $2k$ admits a homomorphism to $SPC(2k)$ (this would be an extension of the four-color theorem). We also give an application of our work to edge-coloring $2k$-regular $K_4$-minor-free multigraphs.

On arithmetic index in the generalized Thue-Morse word
Published in In: Brlek S., Dolce F., Reutenauer C., Vandomme E. (eds) Combinatorics on Words. WORDS 2017. Lecture Notes in Computer Science, 10432 (2017), Springer, Cham, pp. 121-131 • View Publication • BIB
Let $q$ be a positive integer. Consider an infinite word $ω=w_0w_1w_2\cdots$ over an alphabet of cardinality $q$. A finite word $u$ is called an arithmetic factor of $ω$ if $u=w_cw_{c+d}w_{c+2d}\cdots w_{c+(|u|-1)d}$ for some choice of positive integers $c$ and $d$. We call $c$ the initial number and $d$ the difference of $u$. For each such $u$ we define its arithmetic index by $\lceil\log_q d\rceil$ where $d$ is the least positive integer such that $u$ occurs in $ω$ as an arithmetic factor with difference $d$. In this paper we study the rate of growth of the arithmetic index of arithmetic factors of a generalization of the Thue-Morse word defined over an alphabet of prime cardinality. More precisely, we obtain upper and lower bounds for the maximum value of the arithmetic index in $ω$ among all its arithmetic factors of length $n$.
Graded Betti numbers of balanced simplicial complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they only depend on the dimension and the number of vertices, rather than also the combinatorial type.

Central limit theorems for patterns in multiset permutations and set partitions
Published in Annals of Applied Probability, 30 (1), pp. 287-323, 2020 • View Publication • BIB
We use the recently developed method of weighted dependency graphs to prove central limit theorems for the number of occurrences of any fixed pattern in multiset permutations and in set partitions. This generalizes results for patterns of size 2 in both settings, obtained by Canfield, Janson and Zeilberger and Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, respectively.
Observability Properties of Colored Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A colored graph is a directed graph in which nodes or edges have been assigned colors that are not necessarily unique. Observability problems in such graphs consider whether an agent observing the colors of edges or nodes traversed on a path in the graph can determine which node they are at currently or which nodes were visited earlier in the traversal. Previous research efforts have identified several different notions of observability as well as the associated properties of graphs for which those observability properties hold. This paper unifies the prior work into a common framework with several new results about relationships between those notions and associated graph properties. The new framework provides an intuitive way to reason about the attainable accuracy as a function of lag and time spent observing, and identifies simple modifications to improve the observability of a given graph. We show that one form of the graph modification problem is in NP-Complete. The intuition of the new framework is borne out with numerical experiments. This work has implications for problems that can be described in terms of an agent traversing a colored graph, including the reconstruction of hidden states in a hidden Markov model (HMM).
